For the portions alone, Hong Da is an incredible steal!! It's one of the first places I recommended to a work colleague from NY years ago. My favorite Chinese take-out place in Flint! Glenn is absolutely right; Hong-Da certainly gives you an enormity of food for your money, which is what I love. And it's good. It sure as heck is not fancy, but that's the point. Good, cheap, no-frills food. The inside is modest and humble, but very friendly. The lady at the counter remembers regular customers and their orders. Service is quick, friendly, and efficient. There are 4-ish booths inside, so eating in is possible and I do so regularly. Lunch portions are served until 3 pm, I believe, and come with a ton of food and an eggroll for 5ish bucks. One of the best deals I've found in Flint. I've been getting Honey Garlic chicken and Orange chicken - both are great; the honey garlic is very sweet and the orange has just a tiny bit of kick - absolutely nothing scary to spicy wusses like myself. The portions are huge; even the "small" orders of entrees are large - they do not simply fill the containers until they close, they stuff it full until it's overflowing and will not close and secure the container by bending the metal handle onto the lid. Pretty middle of the road for cheap Chinese takeout. It's not bad, it's not great, it's just okay. I've gotten takeout from here a few times, but I've never been terribly impressed by anything that I've had, but I haven't been super disappointed, either. The fried rice was too greasy, as is most everything at Hong Da. I'm not kidding- the fried rice is super greasy. If you enjoy cheap, greasy Chinese takeout swathed in oil, then you'd probably love Hong Da. If you don't like your Chinese food (fried rice, in particular) soaked in an accumulation of oil, then this probably isn't your cup of tea. I've tried the vegetable egg foo young twice now and both times, it was just alright, pretty middle of the road fare. It was fine, but nothing that blew me away, either. Every time I've had fried rice, it has been overly greasy, but I guess that's how it's done here at Hong Da. It doesn't appear to have been a fluke as it happens every single time, without fail. Honestly, I love fried rice, but too much grease makes it hard to stomach. Last time, I had the vegetable lo mein, which was good, but a little on the greasy side. The vegetable soup also had a nice texture to it, but was perhaps a bit bland. What's the best thing about Hong Da? Hands down, the spring rolls. They are probably the best in the Flint area and certainly the best in the immediate area. I love them and can't get enough of them. Everything about them is great, from the texture to the flavor profile. Hong Da does make a good spring roll, that much is clear. The menu is pretty large for a small takeout spot, so there's plenty of options for both vegetarians and meat eaters, alike. As for service, they're friendly enough and usually any call-ahead carryout order is handled very quickly. I've never been let down by their expediency in getting my order ready as long as I've called ahead. Forgetting to call ahead and ordering at the counter is another story and I don't know why. I suggest calling ahead every time and forgoing the idea of ordering at the counter because it takes a long time (I don't have a clue as to why, though) and they did mix up my order once when I ordered at the counter and that created a bunch of confusion on everybody's part, plus a lot of unnecessary aggravation. If you want ambiance, sorry, this isn't the place. This is a little takeout dive in not the greatest neighborhood, but the food is cheap, the portions are large and as long as you don't take umbrage with rather greasy Chinese carryout from a not so great neighborhood, it will probably be right up your alley. I seriously wonder if Hong Da just makes there money off of Kettering Students. It was THE food of my undergraduate career. The food is CHEAP and you get A LOT and it is ADDICTIVE. I still crave it sometimes, against my better judgement. Oh Hong Da, what would I have done without you? Actually, I know the answer to that. They closed down for a few months due to a bad health inspection (we think? Rumors!), and I called the number a few times a week to no answer until they re-opened. I'm going to put the fact that I lived in Illinois for three of those months out there as an indicator of how crazy I am for Hong Da. I'm also going to put the fact that I was not the only one who did this out there to make my questionable behavior in perspective to those that have not eaten there yet. Also: no one actually eats at Hong Da, even though there are tables. I think that the tables are actually just there for you to wait for your food impatiently if you fail to call ahead for pick-up. read more

Great tasting food at awesome prices. One of the ways Hong Da keeps their prices low is by not accepting credit cards. Make sure you have some cash with you when you go! Don't worry, though...you won't need much money as their food is very inexpensive, but excellent in flavor. A note about portion sizes: This place STUFFS you with food. Another Kettering Student here and I absolutely love Hong Da. My friend and I would always call-in our order and sing whatever songs came on the radio by replacing the lyrics with how excited we were to get some Hong Da. We always got a full-order of General Tso with no broccoli, which was enough food for both of us and cost less than $10. read more
