By far the worst food I've had in Paris. First of all, this was one of my most expensive lunch meals, coupled with the smallest portions of food. The lentil soup was red orange broth with not one lentil and the small crock was barely 3/4 full. We got 3 naan (cheese-good, onion- no onions, garlic- hole burnt thru the middle). Samosas were made with filo pastry, but filling was hearty. Paneer tika was average. Food took over 30 minutes to come out, to the point of being noticeably long (usually, I'm good with European chill time during a meal) and it was just an average lunch day. With all the good food in Paris, I truly regret this meal, because for 30€, I could've eaten anywhere in the neighborhood like a queen. Safran is a pretty decent Indian restaurant located in Paris. They are also a chicha/hookah lounge at some point in the day. They clearly display that on the tables throughout the restaurant. The decor is pretty authentic here and the employees are friendly and attentive here. I ordered the fish stew curry (spicy) with a side of butter naan and rice. The fish in the curry is salmon and was very tasty, and according to my friend, quite spicy! Depending on your palette, the staff will try to help you gauge how spicy you should go. My friend ordered the lamb tikka masala which is a little more gentle on the palette. It's a sweeter flavor and the lamb was very tender. The cheese naan was a bit misleading to other naans we've had with this title because it wasn't melted inside of on top. It was more of like a cheese spread with the consistency of butter - not a fan! Overall, decent food here at Safran and a pretty good price. read more

My daughter and I felt like Indian food tonight. We decided to select the nearest Indian restaurant to our hotel. When we first walked in, we were greeted nicely and sat down. We order the "Poulet curry avec du beurre (chicken curry with butter), basmati rice and butter nan. The chicken was tender but the curry was not spicy at all. The rice was not soft and seemed like it was old rice. The nan was ok. Then after asking our waiter 3 times for the check and asking 1 other waiter if he would get the check for us, a third waiter brought us dessert menus. After declining dessert and asking for the check a fifth time, our waiter finally brought it. I did not understand why he took so long to give us our check. The food was mediocre and the service was not the best. When you are in the ST. Germaine area, walk right by this one. You won't be missing anything. Ma fille et moi avions envie de manger indien ce soir. Nous avons décidé de choisir le restaurant indien le plus proche de notre hôtel. Lorsque nous sommes entrées, nous avons été accueillies gentiment et nous nous sommes assises. Nous avons commandé le "Poulet curry avec du beurre", du riz basmati et un nan au beurre. Le poulet était tendre mais le curry n'était pas du tout épicé. Le riz n'était pas tendre et donnait l'impression d'être un vieux riz. Le nan était bon. Après avoir demandé trois fois l'addition à notre serveur et demandé à un autre serveur s'il pouvait nous donner l'addition, un troisième serveur nous a apporté des menus de desserts. Après avoir refusé le dessert et demandé l'addition une cinquième fois, notre serveur nous l'a enfin apportée. Je n'ai pas compris pourquoi il a mis autant de temps à nous donner l'addition. We had Safran Indian Cuisine for lunch in the Latin Quarter and really enjoyed our meal. The owner, Mr Gais was very nice and accomodating. He spoke several languages and was able to translate for us. We ordered a few dishes family style for the four of us. We had the lamb korma (9 eur), shrimp masala (9 eur), and chicken tikka masala (9), raita(3), garlic and cheese naan (2). Some of the other reviews I read complained about charging for rice. I didn't see an issue with paying 3 eur for rice.. We had the cheese naan and it was good but not really good for using naan to eat your food with. The cheese kinda ran out. My favorite was the lamb korma.. really good.. love that the rice had almonds..raita was meh... Overall we have wonderful service and excellent food.. Love the atmosphere inside also.. read more

Very average Indian food, not great but while in Paris if you need Indian food, it's not bad. I would suggest the aloo/gobee, as it is actually above average, compared to the rest of the food. The service is a little weird and they are little over aggressive to get customers in to eat. Also, the wine is very average, and they DO NOT allow you to taste the wine in advance if you choose to buy a bottle which I have never seen before. I would give this place 2 1/2 stars if possible. read more

Husband and I had dinner in this very stuffy and crowded place. All dishes tasted exactly the same and the portions were miniscule. The food was barely warm and poorly seasoned. The waiter placed the food and left to never return except to collect the $$$$. Awful restaurant. Besides serving awful food, the waiter used a deceitful trick to rip us off. We ordered gas water with dinner but instead he brought us tap water on a bottle and pretended to open it with a bottle opener. We observed this disgusting trick repeatedly in this restaurant. I've been dying to get some delicious ethnic food that tastes like home. Safran was my third try, and the BEST one I've had so far. The food was good. The service was so wonderful it was reminiscent of the American/South Asian hospitality I so crave living in Paris. Chicken tikka masala was delicious, garlic and cheese naan were so yummy, samosas were crispy on the outside and flaky and soft on the inside (as they SHOULD be) and the mango kulfi put a huge smile on my face. The owner was so sweet to us (we found out his family and my home-town are very near each other), very hospitable, and he even gave us beautiful bindis and free "palette-cleansing" shots after the meal. We were giggling like little girls. Definitely coming back. This place is great. read more

We didn't expect much from this restaurant sandwiched in between a bunch of other touristy restaurants. But, we were pleasantly surprised. When we were dating, my husband and I ate out at least once a week at an Indian restaurant next to our office building in Arlington, Virginia, and all Indian food has since been compared to and fallen short of our memories there. Until Safran. This was the first time in seventeen years that we found a place that we both felt lived up to our memories. We had the butter chicken and the chicken vindaloo, as well as a salmon tikka. We had never experienced salmon on an Indian menu! The atmosphere was great - we were at a window with a people-watching view, and the waiter was attentive. We would definitely return to Safran when visiting Paris. read more

I had a horrible headache when I walked into this place. My friend ordered a banquet, but I just picked off of his meal. I asked the waiter if he happened to have any pain relievers (all of the pharmacies were closed at this hour) and he did! Meh, nothing great, yet over priced. You probably pay for this location. Owners are from Bangladesh, and the food is not completely authentic. All the curries sort of taste the same. No subtlety of flavors. Their gobi aaloo was drowning in some kind of creamy orange gravy -- it's usually lightly stir fried with lots of ginger and cumin, and is a crisp light vegetable side dish. The chicken tikka masala was a bit of a disappointment and I didn't think you could go wrong with that. Tasted more like a jalfrezi -- sautéed in peppers and tomato. Neither tasted bad, just not what I was expecting. Located on a very popular tourist alley right off blvd St Michel and St Germaine. The decor is colorful, designed to draw in tourists off the street. They charge an arm and a leg for very average food. They charge you for items that are usually complimentary at other Indian restaurants -- like the onion garnish. Drinks are also very overpriced at €4 for a soft drink or juice. This is a problem with tourist traps, they are not trying to build a base of loyal, repeat customers so get away with charging a lot for very average food. Still it's the only Indian restaurant in the area, so it hits the spot if you're craving some Indian food in the Latin quarter. read more

My love is a tikka masala. It's what I measure any south asian cuisine by. granted, it's hard to do a bad tikka masala. Their lamb tikka masala was tasty, though I kicked myself immediately for not asking for more spice -- the French don't seem to have a taste for hot spices, but it seems you can ask for them at many 'ethnic' restaurants. The service was quick and professional, with plenty of sauces for our meager appetizer order. I'm a little biased, as I've never had a bad bad experience at an Indian restaurant, but this meal was especially nice, tucked in the corner of the place next to the large window, with good food and a perfectly brewed chai. I'd definitely go again. Prices were a little higher than in the States, but that was for individual dishes. Next time we'll most likely do the more French menu style of a flat priced, entree, plat, dessert, option. Edit: French style fixed price menu was great. Best samosas I've ever had, and their desserts are delicious. read more

Located in the heart of Paris with many restaurants nearby, this is a decent Indian restaurant. The food was not spicy however, like we like it, and we found out later that we should have asked and the staff would have made it more spicy. Service was very good and made quick effort of taking care of us. The understood english as well (not always easy to find). The worst and the most terrible restaurant experience I have ever had in my life. My friend and I went there and ordered a stuffed paratha for take away, while we were sitting and waiting we changed our minds and finally sat there and started eating as it took very long. The owner came twice and started yelling at us for sitting there although we had paid the full price for the food. Then he started yelling in hindi that "this is not a sandwich place, you took take away and you should leave, you're spoiling our image, I hate people like you, get lost from here". I never had such a terrible experience in my life and I had to tell him that I will call the police if he behaves like this. It spoiled our whole evening.  The Indian owner clearly discriminated against us as Indians saying things which just made us look like some cheap folks. I would never recommend anyone to go here ever and wouldn't even want to see this disgraceful place and person ever. I really feel like suing the owner and the restaurant. read more

My wife and I have frequented Safran for quite a few years, since we discovered it during one of our many walks in Quartier Latin. Being very fond of Indian food, we were quite hesitant at first to try this specialty in an area that is not especially renown for such cuisine. Yet, we were agreeably surprised by the quality, savor and freshness of the food, The variety and appeal of the Indian, Pakistani and Banglades dishes always leaves room for new discoveries on repeated visits, from the multitude of naan breads served straight from the oven, to the many exotic curries offered at several levels of heat. The establishment is intricately decorated and manages to bring a pan-Asian feel to a medieval building, an illusion that is competed by the omnipresence of spicy fragrances. Only shadow on a perfect experience, though, is the relatively uncomfortable seating. Yet, such details quickly melt away with the first bite. read more

Was looking for an Indian restaurant to eat at after seeing the sights in Paris. This restaurant was close to the Notre Dame. The food was more expensive than wanted also there was an extremely long wait for the food even though we were the only people in the place. They delivered the naan first, the naan itself was hard and brittle not a normal naan. They delivered the naan without any curry so by the time the curry came there was no naan. We ordered two curries and two biriyanis only enough to feed 2 people. The food itself was very bland and had no flavor. If you like long waits and food without quantity or quality then try this restaurant. read more

I have exceptionally high standards for Indian food and I actually enjoyed this meal. Ordered the tikka masala and it was quite good. Was surprised when I pulled out my chair to sit down and found a cat curled up, but I ended up corraling it after my meal and cuddling. Neither particularly cheap nor expensive. Went to this restaurant at around 11 pm, I guess they were about to close but they still seated us. I wish they had not seated us. We were rushed when ordering because they were closing. My boyfriend asked the manager to make a small change in his order and the manager (whose name is either rana or mr. medhi -- they originally gave us a false name!!) cancelled the whole order and sent us just appetizers. We sat waiting for the main courses but it never came. After some time had passed the waiter asked if we wanted anything before the kitchen closed. At that point we were informed that they had canceled the order. They would not re order our food and the "manager", who told the waiter to cancel the order, would not speak to us until the very end. His answer to my boyfriend was that, "I am not your waiter and you had no business speaking to me in the first place". I have never dealt with such a useless and rude manager. The food was ok, but the manager made this a miserable experience. read more
