Hands-down the best Indian food I've had in Austin and I lived in Dubai for 5 years. Mild Mattar paneer was perfectly creamy and not too tomatoey with a nice undertone of heat. Super authentic. Rice really makes the dishes shine, it's not overly salty or al dente. Loved the samosas and particularly the sauce. The filling is not too mashed up and fresher than most Indian fare in Austin. My server was very attentive and gracious and I visited on Diwali. I'll return to try other dishes, I'm excited about the Nepali menu as well. My son heard from a friend that Saffron was quite good, so we met for our periodic meal of spicy food my wife won't touch. It's a fairly plain strip mall restaurant. Nothing fancy but nice enough, with lots of seating and tables far enough apart that you can both speak and hear. Service was quick and helpful, particularly on heat levels. We shared two appetizers two and three main dishes. While the servings appeared small, they were deceptive. We had WAY too much food for two. My son took enough food home for a full meal for his wife and him. Everything was delicious, spicy but not painful. Prices seem reasonable. We will definitely return. read more

Stupendous Indian food!!! Best I've ever had. I had Dal Ghost, subtly layered seasoning, very tender goat meat, just amazing. My companion had Tikka Masala which was so very rich and complex that I could've eaten hers too. Definitely the best I've ever had! We had Saffron na'an which was simply out of this world, especially with the sauce from the excellent app Saffron scallops. Garlic banana was also exceptional; both very clearly housemade to order. Mango Lassi was wonderful. Rice pudding was truly exceptional. Portion size just right; with apps and na'an we had leftovers. Heat was American medium; when we ordered medium we didn't know if Indian or American heat scale. Prices reflected the extremely high quality but I felt they were reasonable. Simple and delicious Indian/Nepalese food. I really enjoyed the food at this place. It wasn't the best I've ever had but it was quite good and well prepared. A good variety of options and it's BYOB. Bring you're own wine, awesome! Gobi Manchurian- battered cauliflower with a spicy sweet manchurian sauce. Very tasty with just the right level of hotness. A little heavy in the batter. Samosa Chat - Excellent. This was the best dish of the night. Perfectly cooked chickpeas and samosa bursting with flavor. Chicken Momo - Nepalese dish which was perfect. Absolutely loved the dumplings. Cooked just right with just lite wonton skin. The accompanying mustard sauce was excellent. The vegetable momo was equally good. Dal Makhani - very well prepared lentils. Flavor was delicious with the butter and cream. The Nan- not my favorite. It's a little thick. We were so impressed with the food at this restaurant! It's so hard to describe it's a sort of fusion. I guess it would call it. But the flavors and the textures and the combinations are just wonderfully delicious! I have not had one thing there that I did not like. You might try the Momos. Postmates sent me a $20 credit so thought I'd try something new. I love Indian food and have a couple go tos by my house but this is probably my new favorite. I got the chicken korma and chicken tikka masala and they're both great. The only tip I'll say is I ordered both mild bc you never know how hot Indian food is going to be. They both aren't spicy (which is correct in my opinion when you order mild) so next time I'd go for medium. Really great though, highly recommend. read more

The Indian food here is really delicious. That lamb saag is definitely my favorite! The chow mein was good but didn't stand out. I was a little taken back from them charging me for water without them letting me know first. Other than that, I would say it was a four star experience. read more

Lastnights take out effort from Saffron had to be the worst choice i made all day. I took about two bites of the dry, flavorless, mushy, bland food and threw it promptly in the garbage. The naan was as thick and boring as texas toast. There was NO sauce in my entree. It was potato and eggplant that was sadly under seasoned. My veggie fritters were greasy and dull. The rice was extra dry and tasted day old. I was actually really questioning my dietary habits after that bad take out and will have cereal next time rather than eat there ever again. To be fair, vegan friends warned me about this place. I was hungry and made a mistake. Perhaps their meat entrees are better?...but considering a lot of vegetarians eat this type of food they should get it right. read more

The good stuff is very *very* good. This tiny jewel of a BYOB serves some of the best Indian food in Austin. It's got a somewhat eclectic menu that doesn't really focus on a particular region, but does have the usual suspects (tandoori this, sag paneer that, etc.) The good stuff, as already mentioned, is very very good. The question tho' is "Which is the good stuff?", with the answer being "it varies". The only way to find out is to order a bunch-a things - some of which are most likely going to be great. Those items will continue to be great for a few weeks, when they mysteriously morph back into "ok, but not great", with something else taking over. We waited so long to make a reservation for Mothers Day that Saffron was one of the few choices available, and I'm so glad. The food was delicious. Saag paneer was best I've ever had. I love the tandoori chicken: perfect flavor and very tender. My husband had the lamb vindaloo, spicy but not overpowering. Also recommend the samosas. We came here based on a recommendation from our Pre-marital Counselors.... After seeing the reviews, I was delighted to give this place a try! I was soooo disappointed. We ordered the chicken tikka masala as I usually do at every Indian Restaurant. The tikka masala was not seasoned to perfection. It lacked a lot of flavor. I'm used to the masala hitting my mouth and causing an explosion because of all the spices. I was so sad that I didn't get that same feeling when taking this first mouth full. This place is BYOB which is so cool and the first time I've ever heard of.... You can bring whatever liquor/wine/beer you want as they don't serve any alcohol. Their samosa was dry but the green sauce was super yummy, as it always is, it's my favorite sauce! They have a lunch buffet every day and it's only about $12 a person. We came for dinner tho so weren't able to take advantage of that. Overall, this place is decent, I won't say I'll never be back. HOWEVER, it is not the best in Austin and it isn't fancy.... so give it a try but don't have high expectations and you'll be fine! read more

This food will change you. For the better. I was in the application process for a new mortgage and BAM! Approved 5 minutes after finishing chicken lazeez. Coincidence? I think not. A few weeks later I was helping my nephew study for a math test...which was not going well until the little guy put away half a baigan bhartha. Now he's an engineer for a little startup called Tesla. Had dinner here with a friend pre-COVID, having not tried any other Indian places in Austin besides Tarka. We split the samosa, which was good, and then, because I am a glutton, ordered both the Amritsari seekh and the mattar paneer. I liked the mattar paneer but the Amritsari seekh was disappointing. None of it was very flavorful; basically just some cooked vegetables and pieces of paneer, and very little food for the cost of the dish. I think this place has some interesting dishes if you want the more Nepalese end of Indian-Nepali cooking, but I'm not a big momo fan personally. Also seemed like there was more going on for meat-eaters, while the vegetarian options were the very generic Indian restaurant staples. Basically, it was ok. But I'm happier with Tarka. read more

The food was incredible. We tried so many of their dishes and every one of them was delicious. Their Naan bread is by the best I have ever had. We had onion, jalapeno and garlic Naan. On top of the amazing creamy like savory flavor of their chicken tikka masala - they also have the nerve to serve rosemary cheese naan! Ask for garlic on it as well and thank me later! I'm a fan of saffron I really am. I stumbled into this restaurant hungry and looking for some kick ass Indian food. I ordered the chicken tikka masala, regular and garlic naan, the momos (dumplings), and the tandoori chicken. Surprised to see Chinese food on the menu which slightly irked me. Thoughts? The tandoori chicken was so good! It came out on a sizzling plate with a side of lime and hit every high note I wanted in tandoori chicken, perfectly seasoned, moist, and roasted on the outside. The momos tasted like Chinese dumplings with curry powder mixed in and it wasn't worth the price IMO. The chicken tikka was tasty and had good flavor, tasted very cinnamony. The naan was okay. Overall, it's definitely probably one of the best Indian restaurants in austin but I can only speak for the Indian food and not for the fusion items they have on the menu. We stopped in to get some momos (dumplings). For her birthday she wanted some Nepali food. We ended up getting the chicken momo, chilli chicken, chicken lollipops and chicken choila. The chicken momos were tasty. The dumplings had really good flavor. Just keep in mind, these may come out last since they have to be steamed. For us, it was the last thing to come out. The sauce to accompany the dumplings had good flavor too. The chilli chicken was also good. It's the Nepalese-Chinese twist of fried chicken in gravy with bell peppers. It was good and not soggy. The chicken lollipops were really good. It comes out in 4 pieces. Crispy and good flavor. Oh yea!!! The chicken choila I will definitely pass on. I am just not a big fan of wasabi and I realize there are different varieties of this dish. They have definitely changed the inside of this place up since we have been here. The buffet type area has been changed to just a table where I assume they may put some hot plates on it. I don't see any of the curry in a hurry signs either. BYOB in this place is cool. Parking can get tricky. Just be sure not to park in another business' spot to avoid getting towed. Also, they will accept the Yelp check in offer. Try them out if you want to get some Indian or even try Nepali food. read more

We had a great experience with this business. Austin was in the middle of the great winter shut down of 2021, and Saffron was open for limited hours. We ordered chicken tandoori, paneer tika masala, and saffron naan. So delicious and welcomed after days of cold food! Also, appreciated, was that because of the roads we were running late and weren't going to make it before they closed to get our food. They stayed open so we could pick up our food. Ok so this is my 2nd review of Saffron... the 1st time was out of this world good. This time, the food was so bland, the quality severely was suffering, and it tasty very "fast foody" and "cheap". I had already eaten my dinner when I had the craving for Indian food. I ordered the Paneer Chili (extra spicy), and the Jalapeño naan; and I was not ready for the sheer AROMA that rose from my takeout bag. I broke traffic laws to get home so I could eat it faster. The vegetables were cooked to the perfect kind of crunchy , the paneer was lightly battered and fried, and the sauce was so delightfully flavorful with a complex spice that tingled in my mouth. I had a strong craving for curry chicken for dinner. As per usual I went to my Yelp app to see what Indian restaurant would be on my way home. Saffron was the one I choose to satisfy my craving. It had great Yelp reviews and a 10% check in discount was also enticing Saffron was easy to find in the Village Center strip mall. Upon entry I was greeted right away the restaurant wasn't packed however the attention I got was fabulous. I knew exactly what I wanted and ordered the curry chicken entree with saffron naan via the hosts recommendation. I ordered my meal to go and was offered a seat at the table. The service didn't stop there however. I was offered ice tea and it was complimentary while I waited. The tea was brewed fresh and tastes good. My food took between 15 - 20 minutes to be prepared. The restaurant was very clean included the bathroom and n smoke size that can accommodate a large group. I received and paid for my food an left to enjoy it at home. The food was very delicious. The chicken could have been more tender other than that the curry was sweet and flavorful with a hint of spice. The basmati rice was very tasty and well flavored. The Saffron Naan bread was very delicious as per their recommendation and I wasn't disappointed. I very much enjoyed my meal and I'm looking forward to popping up here again during my lunch break. We had Lamb Rogan Josh, fried rice, tandoori chicken that came with white rice and green peas, potato and pea samosas, naan with saffron and paneer, mango lassi and yogurt. Everything was delicious, and the serving sizes were generous. I would order the same thing again. Loved the samosas and sauces. My granddaughter is usually finicky, but loved her food and the mango drink. We always struggle with finding a restaurant that offers something she will eat, so glad to add this to our list. My son's lamb dish was delicious, but on the spicy side for my taste. Wait staff were personable and attentive. The price point was excellent for the quality and quantity. I came here on a Sunday during lunch because I was in the area and craving Indian food. It also turned out they were highly rated on yelp and offered a lunch buffet. It is a fairly small buffet line but filled with 4 meat options (3 chicken, 1 lamb) the day I visited. I didn't try the salad or the desserts offered, or order from the menu, maybe next time I visit. I was surprised the naan is served on the buffet line and not brought to the table fresh out of the oven like other indian places I've visited. All of the items I tried on the buffet were pretty good, but I ate a lot of the lamb curry. The service was attentive and price was pretty reasonable at $11. read more

We usually go eat at the biderman's deli in the next door shopping center. This time when we came they were out of lot of food options. So we decided to give saffron a try. We got there around 2pm right before the were closing. They let us in. Restaurant looked very clean and staff seemed very friendly. Definitely a step up from a usual Indian restaurant. We asked for were momo's but they didn't have any. Actually they said it would take a while to cook momos and they were closing. So we ordered regular entrees including some okra appetizer. Definitely a unique kind of okra I ever had. More like a hay stack fried okra. It's was fine though. Little bit on tangy side but still good. For main course we ordered baigan bharta, classic chicken curry and some goat dish. Baigan bharta was amazing with smoky flavor. Goat meat was equally good. Only complain on chicken was, it said chicken would come o the bone. But when we got the dish it was boneless pieces which were a bit on hard side.
