I'm giving this store its only five star rating bc after living in this area for more than a decade it has been the only place to get fresh fruits and vegetables in a food desert. The things that you hear about the environment are relatively accurate but it's not bc the people in the store who work there don't care, it's simply a lack of resources being distributed to this community. Did not like that common household items were locked, it seemed like EVERYTHING was behind locked glass doors. All health and beauty products, laundry detergents, baby formula . . . Understaffing to assist in opening and getting selections was also a problem. Yet, security guards were standing around chatting. This location also had an electronic gate at end of self check out isles where patrons had to show receipts to be scanned by staff to be let out!! Fortress shopping not for me! read more

this store is terrible. First I walk into the store people smoking weed on the front. Then I go in the store security arguing with someone.i wanted a steak cut it was 6 pm. There was no one in the meat department. I asked the deli department if any body was there they say nah they leave about 4 or 5. I asked to speak to a manager they gone. I'm new in the area and am very upset because I'm elderly and don't have a car. Also the meat department was in shambles no meat in the case. First of all, this is the worst ever Safeway that I've ever been to. It's dirty and hood, for lack of better words. It's a convenient location, so I go every once in a while when I need to grab something really quick. They are supposed to close at 10pm. This Safeway needs a new GM with a whole new leadership. The selections are usually low nd you have to pull teeth for good customer service. They have a full security team but they need a full cleaning team and stocking team. Tags and Sales are a mess don't go lying for help you'll expedite yourself much faster. Then they close @ 9pm Now! This is the Only grocery store in DC that does that. With No explanation to loyal customers. Alexis is in my photos, she was manager on duty when I had my most recent trip to this location. What can't Safeway stores have the same selections as they do in the white area it's a safeway but it's not compared to nothing when you go into a suburb a area The vegetables are not fresh .they don't have good selections of choices just the basic. Pre-made Dallas salads food all look like it was old and dried out. All the banana look like they was ready for but now they're putting every last one of them was rotten or close to rotten. No good selection of fish mostly just perch and salmon . Poor customer service, mostly bad attitudes, workers that ignore customers and workers that curse. Not focused on the customer. I miss Publix so bad after moving to DC. I don't eat much fried food but wanted to try their deli chicken one day. I asked for a 4 piece and then they ask what I want. I tell them and they say you can't have this or this cause we'll run out for other people and will have to make more. Umm, who's the customer. Customer gets what they want. Don't be lazy. I would say just don't go but this is smack dab in the middle of a food desert and everyone does not have the luxury of going elsewhere. It is really really sad. I really do not know what else to say. It is really ironic that this is what is here since historically speaking this area use to boast lush farmland and use to be a self sufficient, self contained, thriving portion of the city. Never fear, when gentrification takes a complete hold all of these issues will be illuminated, which is as equally sad as the current situation. Here are some of the issues... * Understaffed... ALL THE TIME. If you go in, be prepared to wait in a ridiculously long, slow line. *Snow Day, Every Day, All Year Round: That is how the shelves are... You know how when there is a threat of 20 inches in the next 24 hours and the shelves instantly become a desert barren land. Well...that is all the time at this Safeway. They are usually under stocked. Add that to the long slow lines... It is a snow day everyday in this joint. *Fresh meat...not so fresh. Buying seafood/fish or meat here is a gamble. Regardless of what it says on the package you won't be sure that it is actually any good until you get home and open it. One of my friends refuses to buy anything fresh from here at all. *Fresh Anything: Maybe, maybe not...whose to say. It is odd because this store services most of Ward 7. The turn over of items should be some fast that freshness should not be an issue. There are a million and one people in Ward 7 yet staffing is a continuous issue. This is the worst store I have been too. There use to be a small Murray's in Ward 6 NE. Kicked this places butt all day long and didn't even have 1/3 of the space or selection. It is just terrible. Why Safeway on Minnesota isn't for the community: - understaffed, sub-par service, under-stocked - recently cut back operating hours twice this year; latest hours are 7am - 9pm - mismanaged - lack of quality food: food is molded, expired, or half missing - long lines - has not implemented one suggestion from community meetings/patrons I've stop frequenting this location years again but will occasionally go to pickup dog food. Today my son was told by security that students weren't allowed in the store on school days without an adult. His reasoning to me was that students come in with backpacks and steal. My son was in uniform with the school name visible and wearing no backpack. He saw me drop my son at the door so I could go park. This discriminatory practice is unacceptable! read more

I'm only giving this Safeway 1 star because I can't give it ZERO. It says something when you go out of your way to avoid your local grocery store.....and avoid it I do. But every now and then I don't feel like driving across the bridge to the Safeway on Kentucky Ave, or the Harris Teeter on Penn or the Wegman's in Landover and so I go to my neighborhood grocer. As is always the case with this location, I am always met at the door with LOITERS! Men who just seem to hang around the front of a grocery store are usually enough to make me want to turn AWAY. Then you walk in and the store REEKS, because the majority of the produce is on it's way to dead-ville. Today I had the wonderful idea of picking up asparagus....NOT. The stems were already soft and rubbery. The floors where filthy and I'm still confused why the alcohol (which also includes chips!?!) is always blocked off!?! Luckily this time the lines weren't long, which is usually par for the course for this location, as well. The cashier was thankfully friendly, which I guess can be the 1 star since I've only ever met with friendly personnel here. And OF course leaving out the door, I am AGAIN met with the damn shiftless loiters who were standing there running their damn mouths when I first went in, The cherry on this crap cake.....I was met with the smell of WEED while walking to my car, because 2 of the loiters decided to spark up the marijuana in the parking lot! This is a horrible safeway. The lines are always long because there is usually only 2 registers open. There is a lack of healthy food and the healthy food that is available is more expensive at this store then other Safeway stores in the area.The store is severely outdated and is in desperate need of remodeling. Also there are way too many people loitering in front of the store. This Safeway has security guards but they do not do a good job of creating a safe environment. The guards allow an unofficial taxi service to line up in front of the store which creates a lot of congestion. I will no longer shop at this Safeway. The store is clean-ish, the selection of produce is between so-so and ok, the meats are sorta awful, and the registers... I'm convinced this store is vying for a Guinness World Record for longest lines ever. I only shop here between 8 am and 10 am on weekends, which means fewer people/smaller crowds, but the slow registers create unbelievable bottlenecks. Avoid if possible. read more

Holes in loafs of bread Lines are very long . I mean its the worst service in the world. I been going here for years and everytime I go its no better.

The location of this store is a double-edged sword. It is close in proximity to my place, but it is also right in the hood. As such, there are ALWAYS, without fail, a ton of dudes (and girls, sometimes) standing around outside creating a sometimes imposing and threatening sort of presence that, if you aren't accustomed to being in the hood or navigating "hood territory", might make you fearful for your safety. I don't have a problem shopping there, have never had one, and don't anticipate having one, but I have gone into the store with friends visiting and they're always looking around as if the area is sketchy, which it is. The Safeway needs to be there - people in the area need easy and quick access to food just as in any other area - but an increased police or security presence at the store would be helpful. This is JUST the outside. To the inside: The store is just tragic. I'm sorry, but I don't know how else to say it. I've been to other Safeways in other neighborhoods that were less economically impoverished (read: more Caucasion/less ethnic) and the experience at these locations couldn't be more different. The smell AS SOON as you walk into this particular location is very off-putting. It doesn't STINK, per se, but it certainly doesn't smell clean or inviting. Even a neutral scent, nothing at all, would be prefered to this.......stale, for lack of a better word, smell. It is dirty walking in, cluttered, and just not visually appealing. Sagging balloons that are losing their helium at the front of the store when you walk in, cluttered sales bins, a poorly organized flower caddy, etc. I could go on. The vegetables and produce selection is one of the poorest I've seen. I just have to be honest. I frequently go into there looking for FRESH produce and find not only a poor VARIETY, but also SEVERELY lacking quality. On several occasions, I've purchased avocados from this particular Safeway only to cut them open and find them spoilt, spotted black, and fuzzy with mold. DISGUSTING. I've seen plenty of other fruits with bruises from sitting on the disgusting display cases (that appear to have not been cleaned since the opening of the store) for far too long - meaning they aren't being switched out. A new batch of fruit comes in and they just dump that on top of what's already been sitting there. The vegetables are always a stuggle to find some in acceptable condition - I frequently find myself playing the "lesser of the evils" game with my produce. The fresh herbs and spices are sometimes rarely fresh - I've found bruised and wilted basil many times. And there is frequently discounted lettuce that has ALREADY turned brown and looks unfit for consumption on the shelves. I could really go on and on about the dismal state of the Safeway, but for some reason, I don't imagine that this is new news to anyone. It IS in the hood after all, so it's okay, yes? I find it sad, insulting, and VULGAR, in fact, to have to go to another Safeway halfway across town (Southwest Waterfront) to have a pleasant shopping experience. Oh, and lest I forget....my Safeway's deli doesn't even BEGIN to compare to the one at Waterfront. It looks poorly maintained, dingy, unappetizing, and quite frankly, UNSANITARY. I was prepared to purchase some roasted turkey breast one evening, and the young man assisting me grabbed the turkey and unwrapped it wearing the same pair of plastic gloves that he was wearing that he was using to wipe off the counter (with a grimy rag from a dingy and probably cold bucket of water). I politely told him I changed my mind - to which he responded VERY POLITELY, however, I must say, "No worries. Is there anything else I can help you with?". Again, I politely declined and went on to find another meat option. As I was walking away, he turned back to his task of cleaning and picked up the dirty washcloth and started wiping the slicer down. I was disgusted. This Safeway needs to get it together. It has potential. A LOT of it. But until they fix things, I have no problem taking my money over to the Harris Teeter on Pennsylvania Ave. I don't mind paying a little bit more if it means that I can shop in a nicer environment with a nicer selection of foods. Oh, and I will be posting this review on Yelp! and Google's review site, as well. I've complained about the horrible conditions before to no avail. This last time was just the last straw. read more

This store is in a good location for me because of work. I used to go there for lunch and get steamed seafood until I went one day and the steamer was broke. I don't know if its fixed or not. Anyway, I went early yesterday looking for balloons, cake and flowers. No one was in the balloon section so I went to the customer service desk (because the sign directed me there) I asked a lady could she help me, she said to the guy next to her, help her out. He said when I clock in, I'll help her. OK. I asked another lady, she said: I thought somebody was already helping you? Then walked away and went to her cash register. 15 minutes after running thru the store trying to get someone to help me, I asked for a manager. Never saw one. BUT this wonderful man named PAUL stopped what he was doing and went to the balloon section and spent his time looking thru drawers and boxes of balloons to meet my need for a balloon that said retirement or miss you! He was later joined by GERALD. They both spend time finding the right balloons for me.!! Later I learned Gerald was getting off work and had been there all night! Worst service ever. Went in to grab a roll of paper towels, while in the store my son has to use the bathroom so we locate the bathroom at the very back of the store on the door is a note stating must get key to use. I ask the meat department attendant for the key and she informs me that I must go to the front of the store to retrieve the key and return all the way to the back of the store where the only restrooms are located. when i get to the front of the store i ask for the key and in return they ask for my ID to hold until I return the key. When I hand the guy my passport he says jesh! and shakes his head (not sure what his problem was). he finally hands me the key and when we get in there its disgusting really all of that and you don't even clean the bathroom that apparently is guarded so heavily. read more
