I don't know what it is about this Safeway, but I'm not a fan. It's always super busy, which is fine, but why only have 2 checkers working when there's lines going down the aisles? I normally don't care, I come to this store knowing it's not going to be an in-n-out trip. Today finally just annoyed me. We tried to use the credit card terminal, and for some reason (actually happens more than often at this location) it froze. The checker tried to unfreeze it but to no avail, so he called for manager assistance. Aside from that, the onions had no barcode, so the bagger had to go find a new bag (why he couldn't just type in sweet onion is beyond me). Anyways back to said checker and terminal issues. Manager finally came, asked what was wrong.... actually, he came over with a little attitude. He seem a little confused on what the problem was....checker wasn't very clear with the manager though, and was kind of mumbling, but it was obvious the terminal was frozen. He took a look, and did something and it unfroze. What bothered me and warrants the two-stars, is what the manager did next. Instead of just making note of it to talk to him later, he turns to the checker and in front of customers calls him out " you need to tell customers what is going on because they can't see, or don't know what is going on" Cashier cowered a little, until myself, a friend and some other customers flat out told the manager that he did tell us, and that's why he called for you. It's one thing if this is a constant thing with the checker..... but don't call out your employees infront of your customers, its very unprofessional, and awkward for your employee not to mention, we the customers feel guilty for possibly causing a problem and in turn getting the employee in trouble. Aside from this incident, I am just not a fan of this Safeway. It's as though time stands still the minute you walk into the door. Cashiers though fast, seem to be slow at the same time, god forbid you require help, there's no one to be found. I will say though, all the young baggers are awesome and are always willing to help you with finding what you need. I know you're a chain superstore Safeway, but get it together. I'm at the point, i'm willing to drive the next town over just for Safeway. read more

I like this safe way its always clean the people are very friendly and I am a frequent shopper here, they also have a blockbuster place to rent movies so I think that's also great. I just wish it was bigger though it seems small but overall you can find everything here and if you cant someone is always willing to help you. read more

I decided to go to Safeway to grab a sandwich for lunch. I got there at around 1:30PM on a Tuesday afternoon, and then I had to wait a solid 20 minutes to get my sandwich. The employees are ridiculously slow and have a "I hate my life" attitude. Not only are they slow, but they don't even know how to make a sandwich. I asked for a roast beef panini. You're supposed to use a panini press. What did Safeway do? Put it in the oven for FIVE minutes. In case you are not aware, roast beef deli meat is pretty rare, and if you put it in the oven for five minutes, then it becomes tough over cooked roast beef slices that have no taste to it. A big waste of time. I ended up throwing half my sandwich away. read more

A grocery store is a grocery store. They all have isles, they all have people, and they are always crowded. Yelp is not a place to review PATRONS of a location, but a place to review the service and experience. Sorry you don't like slow people or people taking their time shopping - go elsewhere, or come during a different time of day. Sunday afternoons or any time mid-morning on weekdays usually serve me well. While I admit the store is not HUGE, let's think about this - it's California. Land is expensive...you're not going to find a huge warehouse like store in already crowded Walnut Creek. Every time I'm here - whether for a full blown shopping trip or just to pick up dinner's necessities, I am in and out quickly. I have shopped here for over 3 years and while I'm occasionally greeted by a check out person having a bad day, 90% of the time the service is always friendly. They always say "good bye" using my name, and never fail to ask if I need help out. Overall, I am always satisfied with this Safeway - from quality of food, to selection, to service. read more

This is the worst Safeway in the entire system. Every evening from 5 to 7 PM you will wait in line at least 10 or 15 minutes to get through checkout. They have at least two or three of the cashier stand is closed during peakhours. I've complained to the general manager several times over the past several years and nothing changes. It is only getting worse with all the new apartments in downtown Walnut Creek. Whole Foods has a much better experience. They always have all their cashier stands open and you rarely wait in line. read more

Avoid. I always felt bad for this place, seems poorly managed. But today takes the cake. The store smelled awful upon walking in. About 15 minutes of shopping I get in line and noticed the smell is very strong sewage smell. The cashiers are wearing masks and spraying Lysol. The source of the smell was. A large pile of human waste in between the registers. Instead of closing the area and blocking of the put a cone up and kept it business as usual. This is a prime example of poor management. On Thursday, 6/17/2021, around 6:00 a.m., I went to Safeway on 600 S. Broadway in Walnut Creek, Ca to get bread. As usual, I ended getting my shopping cart full. I was in the deli section waiting for someone to help me. On the other side of the deli, there were two employees helping one customer. I asked for help and waited for 5 minutes. I asked for help again. One of the clerks had an attitude and said that she could not help me because she was with a customer--two clerks, chick-chatting, to help one customer. I asked for a manager. Five minutes later a "manager", a black man (no tag), finally came over. For my surprise, he told me that I had to wait for both clerks finish with the only customer. I replied that It doesn't make any sense 2 clerks helping 1 customer when I was waiting for 10 minutes. Another "manager", a blond woman (no tag), come over and told me the same thing, "You have to wait." They turned the back on me and walk away. I left the deli upset. I was on the side of the aisle, when I clearly heard the two managers talking about me and laughing. I went around the aisle, removed the bread, rolled the car to them and said, "now empty the full cart." The first manager even made a nasty remark, "You have to be on line no matter what to pay." They did not care at all that they just lost a customer with a full cart--over $100.00 worth. Moreover, they were upset with me because I just pay for the bread. read more

By far the worst Safeway in the WORLD! I live a block away yet I would rather drive 5 miles away to the Bancroft Safeway. The aisles are tiny and if you go after 10pm the night shift is stocking which means that you can barely maneuver your cart through the store! It is a joke! One time I was shopping and they had aisle's blocked so I had to literally come back the next day to pick up the rest of my groceries. They DO NOT have a Redbox...The box is red but its a DVD play which is sucks when comparing it to the DVDs that the Redbox offers. Do not bother with this store its horrid! read more

Went in looking for graduation balloons and couldn't find any on the wall or blown up. Alex and Nora went above and beyond and looked everywhere even though I already gave up and said don't worry about it. Shopping in this store makes it very clear that Safeway does not care about customers. Today the bagger literally threw my ripe avocados into the bag. Lines are often 6 deep and no one seems to care. I'll go out of my way to avoid this store. It's really a shame, as this is a prime location and could be a flagship store. Their sandwich department is terrible. I went there during my lunch hour and ended up standing in line for about 20 minutes even though there were only 2 people ahead of me the whole time. There were only two people behind the counter that looked like they could've been in their 70's or 80's. They both moved incredibly slow and were having trouble hearing and finding condiments on the counter. After waiting patiently my turn, I finally ordered my sandwich with only half my lunch hour left. I had to tell the lady two or three times what sandwich I wanted and walk her through one by one what condiments I wanted on my sandwich. Extremely frustrated, I told her to just wrap up the sandwich as is. She looked up, confused, and asked me what was wrong. I just smiled and said that I wasn't going to have time to eat anymore. She apologized and then proceeded to ask me what else I wanted on my sandwich. Although I sort of felt sorry for the poor old people that were made to work at the busiest time of day for sandwich-making, I was very unhappy that I had to wait that long for a sandwich with just two people ahead of me. I give the pharmacy 4 stars. Everything else 1 star. This store is lost in time apparently. Always understaffed at checkout. No self-checkout options. The produce is overpriced. Thinking more about it and reading the other comments it seems as if they just had more clerks then everyone would be more forgiving of the store's other shortcomings. @ Safeway management: TIME IS MONEY! This review is long overdue. My elderly and now very frail mother has been a long time customer. Although she always has received exemplary service...this review is about the exceptional service I have received from Venus at the pharmacy. I have observed Venus juggling customers picking up prescriptions and Covid 19 vaccinations. Recently, Venus recommended the Safeway pharmacy app for my phone to better manage refills and deliveries. Being more technically challenged...I experienced glitches...and Venus helped me both over the phone and in the store. Mille grazie! read more

The Good: The checkers are very friendly, the lines move quickly and this location is open all night. The Bad: I understand that it is a small store and the selection is reduced, but can you people stock your shelves? I'll come in here for something simple like ground turkey and the rack is bare. I've also inadvertently purchased expired items. Really?!?! I really have to check the expiration on every single product before purchasing. Eh, what can you do? Good: convenient location, fairly nice employees. They've gotten better at keeping the pan handlers away. Bad: Small store, small selection, low quality selections. Inexplicably, they did have 8 different brands of breakfast sausage though. There doesn't seem to be any logic to what they overstock and what they understock. Not their fault: I loathe it that the employees are forced to read your credit card or club card and say your name as if they know you. They don't know me. It's phony and it feels wrong. I also don't like it that they want people to give up privacy to get good prices via their club card system. Yes, there are ways around that but why should I have to play games and lie to get good prices? The nearby Trader Joes isn't my favorite but it's hands down better than dealing with Safeway's cynical policies. read more

I have been noticing that safeway is replacing some very good brands and filling whole shelves with product from only one merchant. Case in point: pickles. they are now all one generic brand like vlasic or claussen! why Safeway? are you going to the lowest common denominator and offering the most boring brands? you are not that cheap either. Why did you get rid of grillo's, maille, or the fresh sauerkraut from bubbies and only offer boar's head? Keep doing it safeway, and i will go elsewhere. there is a reason why places like whole foods and trader joes are so popular. I was in line for over 20 min. the cashier told me he wouldn't take anyone after the person ahead of me,.. Mind you - nobody behind me.I tried to talk to him and he hid his face..ignoring me. Been shopping here for years. Recently broke my leg and discovered there's no dp grocery cart!! Dang guys!! Really!!! So, when I brought my ice cream to the cashier in a plastic bag that I had to heist to carry my things in crutches!!!!! WOW!!! The looks on the cashier's face!!! I live close by and shop at this store all the time. I've never experience any sort of rude treatment or seen any prejudice, but "to each their own." The guys in the meat department are pretty helpful and are willing to spend some time with you answering questions and recommending cooking methods. The store is generally clean and they always have enough staff at teh registers. All in all, this is a pretty standard Safeway. Nothing special. read more

Worst Safeway ever. Tiny building so I feel like I'm always bumping into people and there's a limited selection of items. Not to mention a noticeable lack of service. What do I mean by a lack of service? Only keeping 2 checker lanes open, for one. They have some of the longest lines I've ever seen. Also the people are just rude. Some ignore you to laugh with other employees, and some whine and complain about their jobs. As someone who has worked in customer service for about 15 years, it drives me insane. One employee actually makes little opinionated remarks about what I buy. Most of my shopping is done at Trader Joe's, especially for produce and meat since their quality and prices are better. So I tend not to buy fruit/veggies at Safeway and the checker ALWAYS lectures me about it. It's not that I don't eat them.. I just don't buy them from you. Not that it's any of your business. In short, do yourself a favor and shop somewhere else, even if it's just another Safeway store. read more

Well i guess i should start with the good. I went in there the week of valentines day, i have my list and go to the produce section. A young man was there, he knew i looked lost and helped me with everything on the list! Awesome customer service, i was really impressed by this young man. I honestly wish i got his name. So i get all my produce and go to the meat section. older gentleman in all back with dark hair helped me. once again AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE. Now i go to the wine section, looking around and can't find what I'm looking for. The young man from the produce section saw me and tried to help, then the same man from the meat section that helped me saw us looking and went to get the person who works in the wine section to help us. Once again awesome! i can't stress how much these two guys helped me out! Now this is where you get 2 stars :( guy is bald and i believe had facial hair. Now i know everyone has their off days, but man, he was just an ass towards me. And for no reason so i was a bit confused. This man refused to help me, when i showed him the text of what type of wine it was, the brand, and the name of it, he reply was this doesn't help me and walks away. And when i continued to look for it he just gave me a dirty look. I then went to Customer Service who called a different store, she asked me if i the guy in the wine section called the other stores and i said no, her reply "thats bc he is lazy". That last interaction really put a nasty taste in my mouth. Someone should really talk to this employee........ not a good look! read more

I'm a huge Safeway fan! Go to them whenever I can because I know the general layout, love the quality of their produce and their meat. This particular Safeway is sub-subpar. I understand its a smaller location so in some cases they may not have a particular product you're looking for but it does not excuse poor customer service. I was in the ethnic food section searching for asian chili sauce after two minutes of frustration I turned to the employees who were literally standing right next to me and asked them if they had the product. One of the employees responded with "No" and then went right back to work. The other one who was wearing a white collared shirt who I assume was the manager remained silent. There was no apology for not having the product. No offering of a substitute good. No suggestion on where I might find the product. No real regard for me as a customer or the business I brought. So I walked right out. Since there is a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's within a mile of the Safeway I will never return to this store regardless of cost or convenience. read more

Great place to shop. Its always clean and shelves are in order. I use the app to save some money on personalized deals. Oddly enough, the most common items I buy here are kale, potato chips and ribeye steak. If you come after 9pm on Friday or Saturday night "You're going to have a bad time". Since this location is in downtown Walnut Creek there are lots of people here buying alcohol at non Disneyland prices. On average everytime I come in here at those times there are at least 5 people in line. 2ith 2-3 checkers average at those times. No problems otherwise. I like shopping here. read more

Safeway has become way to expensive anymore. I get better produce from sprouts market or trader joes for half the price consistently. Finally had it with them and not going back anymore. Went to buy some crab since it was on sale, turned out they marked it wrong and ended up paying 60% more for it. This happened the last time I was there with another product. Done with them! Can't believe I'm yelping for a safeway... but just so dissatisfied with them. This one in particular is bad. The one in pleasant hill is better. But for Safeway overall, they are loosing touch with their customers. Time to move on for me! read more

Somehow this Safeway always seems to make the customer experience miserable. There is inevitably a line, they have poor customer service and cannot seem to manage the volume of people in and out of their store. What a disappointment to the company. What is wrong with the management here Super Bowl Sunday and they have three checkers open literally 50 people waiting in lines

I live up the street and cant even walk here for one item because I'll wait in line for 30 minutes. It's quicker to get in my car and drive to another grocery store. Always so frustrating walking in here and immediately seeing the lines down the isle. They can solve this problem by adding a self checkout - simple fix! read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Just in time for the holidays, Safeway provided me with the worst, rudest and most unhelpful experience in a matter of minutes. I called Safeway asking if they could simply tell me if they sold a magazine I was looking for. The operator transferred me to Starbucks because they worked right next to where the magazines are. The woman working at Starbucks answered. When I asked her if she could tell me if they sold the magazine I was looking for she replied with 'NO. I don't work near the magazines. Can't help you!' I hung up. I was shocked at her incredibly rude tone and called back. The operator picks up, I tell her that the Starbucks employee didn't want to help me, so she transfers me to Paul the assistant manager. I asked Paul the same question, if they sold a magazine, he replied with 'I don't know.' Wow. I mean really. Wow. So I went myself to Safeway and they did not carry the magazine I was looking for. If you want something done, do it yourself everyone, because the Safeway employees certainly won't help you. Happy holidays! read more

This Safeway NEVER has enough registers open! Really frustrating when you only have a couple items and the lines are down the aisles.

Overall not a great Safeway. Lines are very long and parking can be tough at lunchtime. Other than that the employees are friendly.
