I usually try to avoid shopping at this Safeway and would rather drive a little farther to the Danville/Alamo location whenever I can. Unfortunately, some of the employees here come across as rude, and whenever I actually need assistance, it's often difficult to find anyone available. On multiple occasions, I've also been greeted by a strong smell of urine when entering through the produce/floral entrance--not exactly the best first impression. I considered giving this location 1 star, but there are a few genuinely kind employees who help make the experience better, and the store is usually well-stocked. It's convenient if you only need to grab a few essentials, but it's not the most enjoyable place to shop--especially if you're someone like me who actually enjoys grocery shopping as a leisure activity. read more

I am not a big fan of Safeway in general. Among the reasons for this is that the store employees are rarely available to assist, and when they are, they almost always simply direct customers to the aisle they think the item they are looking for should be on. I miss the days when they would actually walk with customers to the exact spot and show them the item. My experience this past weekend was particularly egregious. I tried using a Safeway raincheck that been issued to me when salmon fillets were on sale and they were out of stock at the store I went to. After selecting the fillets and waiting in line to check out, I showed the cashier the raincheck. The cashier looked at the raincheck and told me that they could not accept it because it had been issued at a different store. She referred to the store number on the raincheck. I have several thoughts about this interaction. 1) Not a single Safeway customer knows the store number of any of the stores they shop at. They might have a preferred store close to home, but most customers probably shop occasionally at a different Safeway near work or a friend's or elsewhere. 2) Not only does the raincheck not say anything about only being accepted only at the store where it was issued; it lists 12 partner stores that should also accept it! Safeway's own policy (https://www.safeway.com/foru/coupon-policy.html - see #25) clearly states that rainchecks will be accepted at any Albertsons banner store that has the specific item in stock. 3) Even setting all of this aside, I was in disbelief that the cashier would prefer to have the salmon (that, for what it is worth, had been packaged a couple days earlier and had to be sold soon) continue sitting out rather than purchased by a customer. If you have any decent alternative, I would avoid this Safeway entirely. read more

When I'm in the area, I stop by this Safeway to grab something quick. Every time I'm here, the check out lines are always long including self check-out. It doesn't make sense that only 1 or 2 check out lanes are open during the day on a weekend. There have been occasions where I'm waiting over 10-15 minutes in line because there's a hold up with a customer in the front. The self check-out has a long line because a couple of the kiosks are down. The Express check-out lane is not even open, which is silly as most people have less than 5 items in their cart. Hopefully they'll improve on the check out situation as that would boost customer satisfaction... I'm just saying! :) Aside from the long lines, this location seems well-stocked, nicely lit, and has decent parking in their lot. It does feel like a smaller Safeway location than most others I've been to, but it gets the job done. read more

The workers are usually really great honestly, so this review isn't about them. However, the store needs to make some changes. I've been using this as my main Safeway for a little over two years now, and unless you're going after 8pm, there will most likely be a comically long line for the self checkout, and only 1 other checkout lane open. On average, this place takes 10-15 minutes just to wait in the line to buy the items you need. Not to mention, the self checkout NEEDS more regulation on who is allowed to use it. I see 80+ year old seniors with 3 carts filled to the brim, taking over 10 minutes JUST THEM to finish checking out. A lot of drink items are out of stock consistently as well. i don't tend to leave reviews but i've either been having some really bad luck or the store is simply like this; almost every single time i have gone to the deli section the employees have met me with attitude unprompted. i always do what i can to be nice and attentive, constantly saying thank you and waiting in line patiently, never calling out for a worker even if i see multiple nearby, yet today when i stated my order the employee behind the deli counter winded up a sigh. completely unprofessional and a bit upsetting, it was like the employee WANTED me to know he was annoyed. it took him about 5-8 minutes to get everything together, so i do not understand the fuss. there was only one other person waiting to order at the deli with me, and it hadn't been particularly busy. i've had experiences prior where other employees at the deli have sighed or looked annoyed upon me asking for some items. it's not like i'm asking for anything ridiculous either. part of me wonders if i've missed a memo somewhere regarding the limitations on how much food you can order from the deli, but even when i am ordering larger amounts of food i always check to make sure there's enough for my order and for any other customers who may want to get the same items as me. disappointing employees, unfortunately. read more

New Paper Bags have no handles, making it impossible to safely carry more than 1 bag at a time. Several times the bags have ripped if you try holding the side so it requires two hands. Safeway is saying us a "production issue" with the supplier and demand for paper is causing the supplier to cut corners on the handles. That makes absolutely NO SENSE given a Trader Joe's and every other neighboring store has paper bags with handles. I filed a complaint with Safeway Corporate on 4/13/26 and was told a supervisor (I'll leave her name out for now) would call me back within 48 hours. She never called and I've now called back 4/21/26. I'd like to know if they intend on changing suppliers to make the customer experience more tolerable given how many customers are complaining... read more

I've been a regular shopper at the Safeway in Broadway, but it's honestly become one of the most frustrating places to visit. Almost every day, only one cashier is working while the checkout line, loaded with groceries, stretches out the walkways during busy hours. Meanwhile, several employees stand around the self-checkout area just chatting, completely ignoring the long line of paying customers waiting for real service. When I politely raised this issue, I was told to "contact the corporate office," rather than anyone taking responsibility or trying to help. That's not just bad management--it's a complete lack of customer care. What makes this even worse is seeing how other stores do it right. Trader Joe's, for example, always has multiple registers open and team members who genuinely engage with customers. You never feel like a burden there--you feel valued. At Safeway in Broadway, you feel like an inconvenience. This location is a huge disappointment. If this is the level of service that's acceptable here, maybe it's time to shut it down and replace it with a better store that actually respects its customers. In all of my years as a Safeway customer, this is hands down the worst Safeway in terms of inventory I've ever seen. Quite honestly, the store management should be replaced. We had a lot of shopping to do for the holiday weekend and this was the most convenient location for us at the time. The store is much smaller than I thought but things were generally easily located. However, maybe 70% of the items we were looking for was at or near expiration date. Lots of things had expired within the week. I wish this was an exaggeration but it is not. Everything from dairy to juice to produce. Usually at a grocery store, yes, a few items might sit on the store's shelves a little longer than they can move them. But the sheer number of things we kept finding that we had to consider not buying because we would not be able to eat it fast enough was surprising. Considering it's Labor Day weekend, how do you not have fresh stock? As we walked and looked at the hot dogs, there was one pack of hot dogs on top of a big stack of hot dogs of the same brand and flavor that was completely dark and ashen gray color. The spouse thought it was a new product because of how different it looked from the rest. We picked it up only to find out it was not 1, not 2, but 3 -months- expired. This was a pack of hot dogs placed on top of a whole bunch of others packs, not a pack that was forgotten or lost in the back of the display case. We noticed a number of other items that were close to expiring, within a day or two, and had to put it back. Some packaging particularly on a juice in a milk carton style package was disintegrating.when we picked it up and we nearly dropped it. The carton felt like mush, either from constant handling or just plain old. Someone should have gotten rid of it. It made me question the rest of the juice and whether those were old too. We went to get produce and I could not believe how old some of the produce looked. Broccoli that looked brown and wilted on the edges, onions that were all soft. I just decided to stop shopping at this point. I don't know what is going on with this store but Safeway charges higher prices for their goods and every other Safeway feels like a top notch experience. There's just no excuse for this lack of oversight. As a footnote, we did flag the hot dog issue to staff. They quickly took it to the back and said they'd let that team know. But seriously, lots of employees walking around and boggles my mind no one noticed a big gray pack of hot dogs on top of the pile. I would question food safety at this store. It's just not worth getting sick or worse. read more

I've lived near this Safeway for about 20 years and even though it's the closest, I prefer other Safeway locations for my normal shopping. Every couple of years, I try this location again, hoping they have improved their service, but each time, something happens that reminds me why I prefer other Safeway locations for my regular shopping. In the most recent attempt to try this location, the meat department said they couldn't help me the way other locations have (and I've been to many Safeways regularly the past 30 years). Just WOW in a bad way. I decided to come into this location since I was at the vet across the street. While I was at the self check out I wasn't able to scan my vegetable item for some reason so I reached out for assistance and the obese african american lady came over to me with a very nasty attitude and says to me "what do you need" excuuuuse me?? Totally unprofessional first off, I kindly let her know that my item wouldn't simply scan. She asked me if I tries scanning the sticker label thats on the vegetable. I kindly said no and that I'm not used to doing that and that I normally type in the correct item number. She scanned it herself and walked away and as she rudely walked away she says to her co worker "them people's alway try to cheat the system" I truly believe that she is prejudice towards latinos. I am appalled at the customer service at this location!! Totally un called for and I'll never come back to this store again. As I was leaving flagged down a worker and asked if they knew her name so I can file a formal complaint. I briefly remember them saying it was "Kamila" or something close to that. As a hard working Latina minority mother and window this made me feel as if this country is not getting any better. The audacity of this (minority) Safeway employee is embarrassing and my experience here left me baffled. It's 10am & I don't understand why Lupe & kamelya are in such a bad mood. Rushing to bag groceries up yet didn't put anything together even when it was sectioned ltogether. They refuse to provide baskets at the front of the store and make you grab them at the registers. They claim its to prevents them from "growing legs" but that's laughable. If someone wanted to steal it they would just have not put it down after they picked it up. Where they picked it up doesn't make a difference in that. when Ive suggested they keep them at the front one than once. I stopped by the safeway on Broadway to pick up a few things around 12:10am, after we have our groceries we get to the checkout and it's now 12:40am there is no one, we see a self check register open so after waiting for the cashier to not show up we begin to check ourselves out. Literally more than half way through an employee comes up yelling at us saying that we are going to mess up the system at 1:05... so I explain that there were no cashiers and the checkstand was open so we decided to ring ourselves up there then he starts to tell me that the store needs to close for 10 minutes while the system reboots, I work for Safeway and I get it, but I've never known a store to close for 10 minutes for the reset. So we finished ringing ourselves up. As we're walking out the door I let my boyfriend know that I would catch up went and found the gentleman and asked him his name I do believe he said William. So I continue to try and apologize for using the self checkout machine and explain to him that I had no idea that it was not available because it was open. Then he proceeds to yell at me and I quote "that if I really work for Safeway I should know that self check out machines are off at this hour." I explain to him that it was left on he said "well it had a bag over it." I explained that there was no bag on the self check out, and if a cashier came up when we press the button we wouldn't have used it. In my opinion I do believe that that Clerk or cashier needs to be a little bit more courteous to the customers. read more

This location is a shining example of how not to run a store. Consistently understaffed and poorly managed, employees tend to mill around unsupervised. There are many good employees at the store, however, they are clearly not supported by store management. Produce and perishable items consistently past expiration date. Quality is lackluster. Can't tell you how many times I've waited 10 to 15 minutes while only single checker is working and the line which is 8 to 10 people deep. They now have electronic self-checkout! Four stations! Most times I never go to this Safeway in downtown Walnut Creek. It is too crowded. The lines are horrendous. It's a tiny store compared to all the others that are a couple miles away. Every experience I have here is lukewarm or negative. Until now. Had to pick up two quick items. First thing I noticed was no long checkout line. It was early morning so nobody was awake. Then I saw the amazing brand new electronic checkout stands. Yay!!!!! Took me a minute, maybe less. Worst customer service at a grocery store in the area. Denise (mgr.) and Dante are two of the only friendly, helpful people here. Raphael (?) the mgr. is rude, dismissive, and clearly hates his job. For YEARS I stopped going here, even though it's the closest store to my house, because of the unwarranted hostility these employees have toward customers. I'm a polite, respectful guy, giving these employees no reason at all to be rude from the jump, but they are. Moreover, I've consistently heard employees drop MANY "F" bombs at a loud volume in front of customers, complaining about random personal problems. I'm not a prude, but... social contract, people. No one wants to hear you say "f" this and "f" that at full volume. I will resume my plan of never going here again, despite the inconvenience. This store SUCKS!!! Do not give them your business. I typically don't go to Safeway a lot unless it's for specific deals like milk or Kellogg's branded cereals. So today I was running a few errands before heading to a show at Lesher. I wanted to check out some cereal but ended up not getting anything. The Safeway was pretty much similar in nature as a lot of other Safeways I've been to but the parking here is tiny. The lines to check out seemed to be quite long which is again...typical of a lot of Safeways I've been to. Regardless, it's fairly convenient for those living in the area for a quick pick up of groceries. read more

Doesnt matter. $6.99 for a box of cereal $6.99 for a pint of ice cream $7.99 for a boxed sandwich $2.89 for a redbull. $16.99 for a pound of tritip with a giant fat cap they hide with the packaging. $12.99 for a pound of grapes. All bread is trash. Half the strawberries are moldy. You'll end up spending $20 a meal and you'll have to cook it. Don't buy here. if you do they'll just keep raising rates. I went to do a bigger shopping. I went in mid afternoon on Monday. The produce wasn't fresh. The whole produce department Looked like it wasn't freshly stocked. Old produce. Picked over. I wanted to buy fresh flowers. It looked like they didn't get a new shipment of flowers either. I didn't buy flowers. Is this a management issue? Management dropped the ball? Not organized? I don't know. I bought a pack of the Safeway brand chicken. Looked like they use old chickens. I had to throw one breast away. Others were tough because they use OLD chickens! Cashiers don't look professional. They should look clean and presentable. This is not the case. Baggers are mentally handicapped. They throw my expensive groceries in the bags with no regard. They make some bags so heavy that I struggle to lift them and they don't make good use of the bags I bring! Prices are ridiculously expensive. Management needs to step it up big time. I might drive to the Alamo Safeway for my next shopping trip. Tired of this. read more
