For at least the past year, I've been buying the fruit cups that they advertise as buy two, get one free. Today, I bought two, and didn't get one free. I went to the customer service counter and then was told that the mango fruit isn't included. However, it was in the same area and had the same price of $6.99. At the customer service counter, they said that I could get another one instead of the mango but I would have to wait in line again. Also, I bought two seasonings that both had a reduced price from what I was charged. While I was at the customer service counter, another customer said that they she frequently has problems with the prices they have posted in the store as well. This review is only for the deli. We've ordered chicken multiple times and have spoken to people who ASSURED us there would be no issue and that the chicken would be put aside for a 4pm pickup. We even told Melissa or Melinda that we've had issues in the past and really needed the chicken to be correct and ready. The day of, we called to make sure the chicken was being cooked and would be ready at 4pm. We were told the chicken was going in that moment. Once again, we showed up right on time, and not only was the chicken not cooking or ready at all, they didn't even have the chicken we asked for. We only wanted legs and thighs, which Melissa guaranteed she would put 18 pieces aside in the morning (we spoke to her the night before), and she said she would PERSONALLY make sure we were taken care of. What a waste of time and money. We ended up with breasts and legs, which we did not want, but since our event was at 5pm, we had no choice. One of my side jobs has me drive to various Safeways, Targets and Walmarts in the Bay Area. This Safeway is where I usually put stop for restroom and food in the Fremont/Union City Area. That might not sound like high praise, but given how many stores I visit in the Bay, it actually means something. The restrooms are clean and accessible (which is more than I can say for a lot of places). The staff is friendly whenever I need help. The aisles are tidy. And even the customers tend to be chill, which isn't always the case elsewhere. I wouldn't necessarily say it's the best Safeway on Earth, but I've never had a bad experience here, and that counts. It's a solid, reliable grocery store. If what you want is a Safeway, this place delivers exactly what it's supposed to. No complaints. read more

This is for the Bakery department. I ordered a cake with a picture of my daughter on top (High School graduate). When I arrived to pick up the cake, they at first couldn't find the cake. I'm not sure how you loose a 1/2 sheet cake! However, I immediately began to stress out. They finally found the cake and upon reviewing the cake the picture was in TWO pieces with a seam/separation down the middle. I expressed my displeasure and the worker said "I don't know, that's just how they come, you can pay up front". I was mortified! I had an event the next day so there was no time to order another cake from a different Bakery. Additionally, the girl was preparing to leave and there was no one else in the Bakery department to escalate the situation. I cannot stress the amount of disappointment I felt every time I looked at the cake. The event has passed, I'm still disappointed and I STILL want a refund (I still have the receipt). Since then I've gone out of my way to shop at Raley's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I regret that I ever ordered from this location. read more

This review is for the bakery only for custom cake order. They really messed up everything on a custom cake for a child: colors, orientation and design. The final cake looked nothing as advertised. They said they called me to tell me they didn't have the toys for the cake (which they didn't) but there was more wrong with the cake than just missing toys! Don't order custom cakes here! Got here to play the mega millions both electric machines are OOS so it forced me to go to the customer service counter. I literally had to wait 10 minutes to wait for the cashier to help everyone in line for groceries. You get 2 stars for the simple fact that the cashier was polite and kept me informed he would come over right as he finished. Did my transaction and decided to make a money order come to find out he couldn't process a money order so I had to wait...and wait and wait. 15 min goes by before they tell me the person is on lunch. While this grocery store may have a decent selection, don't waste your time by going there. They never have enough cashiers and now they're turning off the self-checkout lane meaning that you're going to waste your entire shopping trip because half of your time in the store will be waiting in line. My last trip I had to just abandon my cart because the lines were enormously long. I went into Safeway to redeem winning tokens from the Monopoly game and was having a difficult time locating some of the items. While other employees were quick to say "no rain checks", I actually wanted to find where the item is usually located on the shelf. This particular item wasn't located on the shelf (later I would find out that I misread the ounces). Gerry/Jerry, who was working in Self Checkout at the time, was quick to assist me. And nicely showed me my error :). There was another issue at checkout and he was right there to the rescue again. Also note that the bagger was helpful too, but unfortunately I didn't get her name. This review is mainly for their Delivery & Pickup app and service. Over the July 4th weekend, they had a special for their lobster tails from 07/01-07/07. I ordered for pickup at the Union City store on July 4th at 5pm. I received an order confirmation email with my estimated total and was told to wait for a notification before leaving to pickup my order. Past 5pm, I never received any email or app notification or text. So I decided to call the store and ask about my order. The employee said it's most likely because they are out of my item so that's why I never received a notification to go pick it up. So I asked her if I should've made a pickup order for 8am right when they open. She said yeah probably.. People were most likely going in throughout the day and still purchasing the lobster tails even though online orders were placed. You would think they would show you in the app if they are sold out or not or give you some notification earlier in the day?? We were expecting to eat the lobster tails for dinner. Anyways, the lobster tails were still available so we decided to order again for 07/05 and pick up at 8am. When we were ready to go to the store at 8am, the order was somehow cancelled because they checked their stock at 5am and there were sold out. We still decided to go at 8am and guess what? THEY HAD IT!! So we decided to buy it but they wouldn't allow us to reopen our cancelled order which we had a promo code on. Eventually they applied the promo code and we got it for how much it should've been, but after going through all that trouble. All in all, you would think such a big company like Safeway would make sure their apps and system are updated all the time. Whether or not COVID was happening, I would guess the same situation would've happened. I would not recommend ordering for pickup from the app. Just go in store and see if it's there. read more

Check your receipt. For the last year or so, the Safeway in Newark has been 'accidentally' double scanning at least one item per trip. I can't say they're doing it intentionally, but that never used to happen at all. Ever. That and some other reasons (pharmacy, EV charging, more) convinced me to switch to Union City Safeway. Things were great for a few months, unless you shopped in the middle of the day, when they only have one checkout lane open, and it's a 15 Items Or Less lane. When I have a cart full of groceries, what then? But the dreaded 'oops' double scan just happened here as well. On January 8, 'Joyce' scanned 4 bagged salads when I only bought 3. Older well run store in a big shopping center. Big palm trees on the driveway - new coffee place next door and that phone repair place keep me in the area. Older store - inside is nothing visually to look at special. Well stocked and clean. Everything is taken care of to good standards. Lots of self check out - no lines at the register when I came in late in the evening. Bought some bakery items and some canned soup that was a good deal on discount because of overstock. Never hurts to have a few extra cans sitting around if the stores go crazy again. Really, when the panic shopping was going on I knew the least safe place on earth was to get in the middle of some mom and the last bag of rice. Got a bunch of bubbly water - odd thing - other stores usually don't have it - maybe there aren't so many people in this area into drink making. Security does an extra good job here keeping things safe and being assertive. Overall, I think this is a well run store. read more

Fremont Flower greeted my boyfriend with a sour "uhhhh shopping late?" And when he asked for the flowers to be wrapped they told him that's what they had and it would take an hour to do anymore than that. Safeway was able to help my boyfriend pick out flowers, arrange them and send him on his way in less than 30 minutes while having at least 3x more customers than Fremont Flowers did! After waiting in long line (self checkout was closed) I was in a hurry to get out didn't check the receipt until later. This has happened to me many times before on sale items but I go back and the customer service always adjusts the prices. Like this has become a norm! L O C A T I O N This particular Safeway is in a large plaza on the Decoto and Alvarado-Niles intersection. It shares the space with many other restaurants and shops like Caffe:in, Happy Lemon....you know where my priorities are at. Parking is shared by all of them and this place is BUSY. So parking is even a challenge during COVID. C O V I D P R O T O C O L So there used to be one lane aisles but there was a recent renovation to space out all the aisles. I usually do self check out and wish they wipe down or provide sanitation wipes to wipe down the check out stands after each customer uses it. E X P E R I E N C E So this last trip I needed to pick up a few free items that were on my app. You should get the Safeway rewards, it's free and sometimes they give you freebies. I've had free rotisserie chicken, free ice cream, free peanut butter, free $5 off of $5! So I set my location to this Safeway in hopes to make my trip fast. Well apparently they just recently renovated so the app wasn't updated with the right aisles for the products. I took 2-3 trips up and down the aisles to find peanut butter and finally found it near the bread area. Another guy, who I bumped into in the first aisle specified in the app, was there too and said....yeah they moved everything. I did get my peanut butter but I didn't get to find my meat sticks. Oh well. They also seemed to put a "secured" area in the center with a security guard and a checkout stand right there for specific items like alcohol/wine, beauty products, pharmacy items, etc. That was kind of new. I've seen this with some WalMarts. O V E R A L L It's a busy Safeway. I only really go here if I need to pick up something quick and we're in the area otherwise I wouldn't go here. I wish there were more sanitation wipes or wiping down of self check out stations, but I think this is starting to die down as COVID restrictions are starting to lighten up. Service is over the top terrible. It's like most of them are insane. Gilbert is a complete jerk always complaining about his job... Knows when he is completely wrong and always tries to act like he is wright. He man handled a handicapped man. I've lived here all my life. Gilbert needs to be fired. Besides getting super busy at the check out line around dinner time, this Safeway is pretty legit. The shelves are constantly stocked, the meat section always has deals on meats to barbecue, Jameson is always on sale. *high five. They offer self check out registers, but just a heads up for you alchie drinkers, you are not allowed to check out in the self check out. You have to go through an actual register check out person. Selena is our favorite check-out lady. She's got a fun personality and basically runs the registers show! We always like catching up with her when we stop in for groceries. read more
