Why did I shop at Smart & Final on March 30, versus Safeway or Costco? Because of the sale prices on Challenge Butter w/Canola Oil 15oz for $4.29 (butter prices are going up) and their First Street Sparkling Water 12pk for $4.49. Both sale prices are current and do not require a digital coupon. I did scan my app successfully, however, because the $1.49/lb spiral cut ham price worked correctly. The butter and water did not. Looking at my receipt at home, the butter rang up at $5.59 and the water at $5.79 +CRV, and I bought 3 of each, so they got me for $7.80 total over. It's not worth shopping here to save money on certain items if I'm paying it right back on other, mis-priced items. At least the ham was good. read more

First time stepping foot in a Smart & Final Extra!! and i am most definitely a fan!! Purchases at a wholesale amount & the perks of the discounted rates as well!! You will find all the products you normally would find/need at your local grocery store with an added twist of unique finds [snacks, cereal flavors, beverages, etc.] Aisles are extra wide, store is organized, and very clean. On a side note, parking is an absolute breeze- spacious and plentiful!!! With that being said, the produce department doesn't offer the freshest items. Call me super picky, but I'm not trying to spend my money on wilted, wrinkly fruits & vegetables. Just take your time to inspect prior to committing. Meats, snacks, beverages, & party supplies [yes, I said "party supplies"] are at an abundance. They legit have everything you could possibly need. 4 stars! read more

The one time I had to ask for help, the person was incredibly helpful - getting something off the very top shelf, carrying it to the register, even offering to take it to my car. Cleaner, better store with better customer service and more cash registers open for faster checkout than the Fremont store near me. Produce dept. Fresher and better, no rotting produce...YAY!! Extra is downsized enough so a family shopper could buy within their budget, no more supersizing bulk packs but also in micro sizes. offerings: small packages of veggies, wine section, beer, hard spirts. etc. ala a regular grocery without the specialty departments. Almost got tackled for buying veggies!! I understand that now a days there is a loooot of shoplifting but come one. A employee named Marvin almost tackled me for buying limes, celery and Jalapeños!! I was walking out of the store and he ran out side and yelled "heyy show me the receipt for that!!!" First of all he scared the crap out of me. I heard a man yell, Im a mom with 2 little girls. I showed him my receipt and he showed no respect no compassion or friendliness. I am not upset by him asking me for my receipt, I am upset by the way he approached me and the way he treated me. Spoke to the manager and she saw everything. Not a great experience at this store. The staff is stocking shelves during business shopping hours leaving no access to the isles for the customers. Not just an isle or two, I'm talking several isles, like half of the store. The staff won't even move out of the way for you can grab something. I guess the employees are forgetting if there's no customers, there's no paycheck or even a business. You don't stock shelves during business hours. This is a job for after or before hours !!!!!!!! If this wasn't bad enough, when I was at the register to pay for my belongings, the cashier didn't even bag one item. Yes, I said this correctly !! The cashier would scan the products and then just push and stockpile my groceries on top of one another, while he made me bag my own stuff. Let me remind you, I had eggs and bread and he was piling things on top of these items as well. In the meantime the line for this register was backing up due to he was the only register open and yet he would not help with bagging, and yet this is his job !!!! He's getting paid to bag, not me. I was only trying to help out and yet he didn't lift a finger. His comment to me was there's no hurry, while he watched me bag $250 of groceries as fast as I could. Once I got a few bags packed, the cashier then started helping with another customer. Only to mix our groceries up, causing complete chaos and confusion. This is HORRIFIC way to run a business. Shelves are empty, so they stock during business hours. Having carts and empty boxes everywhere. Employees won't help customers or even act like they care, and then they don't even do their job and bag the groceries. I will not be shopping at this store no more. I hope others will follow and this store closes. I sure hope a CEO, VP or a President from Smart and Final reads my review. Why not rate a grocery store?! I go here enough to!! Place is decently set up and clean. Plenty of parking but you share it with AT&T, Chipotle and Michael's stores. I like this place for what they have especially party supplies or bulk items. I always have big parties or gatherings so I need them big serving spoons or containers! It's just a little more expensive on some items but I would rather go here then Costco cuz I never leave not spending $300 there!! They have everything a grocery store should have. Good enough selection of alcohol for those quick stops. Good fruits and vegetables where I don't see them rotten or deformed! Good meat and dairy section. They just don't have exotic foods like Safeways or Trader Joe's. Service is always lacking or was that staffing as well! They need to work on it. We wanted to get some groceries after lunch and decided to go here to pick up some fruits and vegetables. The fruit and vegetable selection is very limited. The fruits do not appear fresh. The bags of tangerines had mold and the watermelon and cantaloupes looked real dirty. They did not have basil.... which was disappointing. All prices seemed marked up compared to Raley's or even Sprouts! We appreciated the plexi glass divider between the cashier and customers, but our cashier kept rubbing her eyes, nose, and mouth even while wearing gloves... while bagging our groceries. We had to disinfect everything once we got to the car as we felt really grossed out seeing her behavior and it didn't feel sanitary at all. We probably won't come back to this location.... read more

I really like coming to this Smart and Final Extra. I used to think that this was the same as the Smart and Final in Oakland but then realized there are deals at this one that they don't have at regular Smart and Final stores. Some of the items are a little more expensive than the Walmart close by and some items only are available in bulk quantity. Today I bought some Ajax and the largest (non-refill) size was only $2.99! The medium size was $1.99. I bought two of each for my mom and called it a day. read more

Smart and final is a cool store to shop at. This location in UC is huge. They have a super friendly and helpful staff as well. I've gone here for shopping it seems around the holidays is when. They sell a ton of different stuff which is why I go in here. They have groceries or bulk food products too. They sell utensils, paper plates, aluminum trays, or aluminum dishes to cook or bake in. They also have tons of other drinks you can buy in bulk or big canisters like lemonade, tea, etc. I also have come here for ice and to buy the candles you put under chaffing dishes to keep your food warm for the party. If you're hosting a party this is the way togo. Nobody wants food for days after they host, you just end up throwing it out, this place has all types of togo containers, boxes, aluminum ones with lids, and more. I will continue to shop here as they've come through for me many times already. read more

3rd time I've seen your produce Dept in absolute shambles. First two times, there were tons of flies by the spoiling red onions. Today, there are several bins that are completely empty when I arrived yesterday ( Sunday ) before noon. How is this possible? I strongly suggest you take a look at your produce more often. To come across such a poor display 3 times is simply unacceptable and embarrassing to the public. I will post pics so you know what I saw... Lastly, you guys have a shopping cart problem. Today my family received very bad service from this location. We arrived in early afternoon and was looking for a cart, walked around through the entire parking lot to find not a single shopping cart available. After I came back to the front of the store luckily there was a cart and when I took it I found the back of the cart opened out toward the back. I was planning to buy the week's worth of groceries so that opened part wasn't going to hold what I intended to buy. I went over and saw an employee (Rey) and asked if he was working there he replied yes. Then I asked him if there were any more carts he said no the boss need to order more. I told him it would be difficult for me to shop there without a proper cart to which he replied "you need to go to another store then". I told him that was not right for him to answer as it was incredibly rude. He brushed me off and walked away. I went to speak with the manager who was busy checking customers out and though she did acknowledge me didn't do much to address the situation. I gave up after 5 mins of waiting. It doesn't seem the employees are really trained at all but to just go there for a paycheck. Customer service is out the window. Rey got his wish, I will be bringing my business elsewhere from now on. read more

Yesterday was my first time coming to this Smart & Final. I was told by a family friend that they sold a special type of 'Yogurt' that is commonly eaten by the Lebanese community. Sure enough, they stocked and sold it! Not only that, they sold various brands and sizes of such Yogurt! My girlfriends mother and I were very impressed! The store is very clean and the selection is awesome. 1 star off because of what seems to be a trend at most grocery stores lately.. they have 2 registers open and in turn there are long lines. read more

She didn't say a word, continued talking to the frito lay vendor. I tell her what I need, she doesn't listen, so I repeat. Then she backs up and motions for me to grab it. I purchased a twin pack of Farmer's John thick cut bacon When I went to use it I notice one of the package was open and the bacon was bad. Went back today to get a refund or exchange, I never in my life have been treat so horrible by management. When I arrived they stated do COVID - 19 They weren't doing refunds or exchanges. Closest Smart & Final to home plate. Come here quite often for bulk purchases of Rockstar and Monster. When you drink one a day, you have to find the cheapest option for consumption. The store overall isn't too bad to shop at. The biggest complaint would be checking out. Too often, if not every time I'm there, the lines are backed up and the cashiers are extremely slow. Maybe them, maybe the customer.... I don't know. Either way(!), there needs to be a greater focus placed on keeping those lines short. If I saw that happen, and it was consistent, this store would easily be 5*****. read more

DO NOT COME TO THIS SMART AND FINAL We have came here a couple of times, traveled 30 minutes to get there when my husband was paying he tried to pay some of the veggies with wic and the manager tammy was so rude and acted super dumb saying that she had to re scan everything because it wasnt eligible even tho it had already gone thru. We had over 300 dollars worth of groceries that we were going to pay with in cash and she made us return all of it. Then she said she was going to give us a refund of the wic after she said that she couldn't. At the end she told my husband to not come back to her store. I have noticed on here that a lot of people have made complaints about her and the fact that smart and final still has her working there shows that they don't care about their customers at all. SHOP HERE! The employees here are great and there's hardly ever a crowd so the shopping experience is free of stress. The meat selection is pretty narrow for my tastes and there's no deli but everything else is reasonably priced. Every time I needed help there was someone available to answer my questions or find a product. It's amazing! At larger grocery stores, I'd be strolling along each row trying to make sense of the massive choices of brown sugar and plethora of yogurt and cheese choices. At least at Smart & Final, it's small enough to find everything but big enough to provide you with choices. My bf and I go here to stock up on groceries and goodies every week, at least! read more

After my experiences with the one in downtown Oakland, I didn't have high expectations. Similarly with the nearby FoodMaxx, which is destination to avoid. This place is surely rough and ready, but it's mostly OK. Sure, the unfinished concrete floor and Costco-wanna be shelving means it's not Safeway, but they have an OK selection of stuff, and even a reasonable range of vegan items (far, far more than FoodMaxx), although some were out of stock at the time. Not my first choice for a lunch destination, but I'd be OK going here again. Definitely here rather than the neighboring Walmart, and cheaper than the Lucky's on the other side. read more

This store is on the same floor plan as the Fremont Walnut Avenue Smart and Final, but the amount of space makes all the difference! I have to salute the management and workforce of the Fremont store for getting somewhat favorable ratings with less real estate space. For example, the checkout lines and produce department are painfully congested, but this store in Union City does not have those problems to anywhere near the same degree. At the Dyer Street store, I had to settle for 16 White Castle hamburgers since I wasn't willing to buy 6 cheeseburgers for a high price per unit. I'll wait and see if the Walnut Avenue store has the cheeseburgers. It was a struggle to find a cart and also a struggle to move past some sort of barrier toward where I parked at the north side of the store.
