Safeway's are great, but this one is just ok. If you go to, or have gone to SCU then you have been to this safeway a lot. It's right next to campus and therefore easily accessible. I used to live literally across the street from this safeway so I was here all the time. Now I live on the other side of campus but I still make my way over to safeway whenever I need some basic groceries or cleaning supplies. Be warned: This is not a good place to go most nights. After about 10 PM there is usually only one cashier and lines can get super long and slow. ESPECIALLY on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. These are SCU's party nights and the lines get much longer because of all of the undergrads buying alcohol and munchies. If its this time I would head to another Safeway. Other than that though this safeway is pretty good. It closes at 2 AM, which isn't bad. Its always pretty well stocked. Their meat department is pretty good and so is the bakery. The deli is also pretty good. I used to grab lunch there all the time. Either get a sandwich (which I've tried many and never really been let down) or something from the hot food area (chicken strips, pizza sticks and potato wedges are my personal favorites). The workers and check out people are really friendly. Lots of them know me because I go there so often and always strike up conversations with me. They also have pretty great deals on Fridays, like frozen pizza for $5, or a huge box of cookies for super cheap. It's a good time to go to see what's on sale. If you are a student then this place if great. If you aren't then you might want to find another grocery store. read more

This place appeared to be newly renovated, but upon walking it, I noticed that it was a lot smaller than the average Safeway. The customer service was EXCELLENT, but the selection there was very minimal and scarce. Their aisles were very narrow, and they do not carry everything that the majority of Safeways normally carry. This place is great to stop at if you just need a couple of items, but not if you are looking for something specific. Their meat selection was pretty impressive, and appeared to be pretty clean!!! Their butcher was very nice, tentative, and had excellent customer service skills. I didn't catch his name, but I love when the butchers go out of their way to try and help you find what you need or want. I do not live in the area, but if I did, I would definitely stop in to buy my meat here, thanks to their Butcher. read more

"Did you find everything OK today?" No, pardon my fatness, but you guys don't have the honey BBQ cheetoe puffs, hot cheetoe puffs, Lays BBQ chips, or their store brand Luncern ice cream sandwiches. :( It is a small Safeway though, so that's why they're unable to stock more fatty stuff. Their great service is still there, great prices(i'd recommend using their online Just-4-U program, it rocks!), deli area, sushi area, and Starbucks. Their parking lot does very much suck and there's no near by place to put your shopping cart. It's ok though, it's a grocery store & people will go there when they need to. read more

You'd think being the only grocery store within a 100 yards of the Santa Clara Campus property, this Safeway would be a little more student-friendly. Afterall, where would students from the dorms turn to for some comfort food away from home. No way, its gonna be this Safeway, just 'coz one of the manager is a mega witch. My friend parked her car in the Safeway lot to buy some groceries and pizza next door. She got back and found her car towed. She pleaded her case with the manager on duty by showing her purchase receipts, but the manager simply brushed her off. Granted this Safeway wants to deter students and others from long term parking on their lot, but to go tow-crazy and unsympathetic is crossing the line with customer relations. These are tough economic times to be out over 2 benjamins to reclaim a towed vehicle, not to mention lots of inconvenience. So shoppers beware if you need to do business with this Safeway and its neighbors. Keep your eyes on your vehicles at all times. It might be Safe 'coz the Santa Clara PD is right across the street. Dear Safeway on The Alameda, We are totally in a fight! Yes, I'm still holding a grudge about those not-so-fresh parsnips but now I'm fed up with your increasingly aggressive panhandling...oops, I mean "solicitation of charitable contributions". YES, I heard the 47 announcements about people who contributed while I was shopping and the 23 reminders about what you were collecting for today. YES, I saw the solicitation on the credit card thingie - and I declined. YES, I heard you ask me if I wanted to donate today, as evidenced by the fact that I politely declined...but you took it several steps too far by continuing to press the issue with "Really? Nothing? Not even a dollar?". Wow, trying to verbally cajole/shame your customers into contributing when they've already declined TWICE??? While I appreciate a charitable mindset, I don't need to be hassled like this while I'm just tryin' to pick up some eggs and lettuce - I'm here for some good old-fashioned commerce, not to get hit up repeatedly for contributions. If I could give negative stars, I would. My son and I like Safeway's boneless buffalo chicken, and they haven't had it recently. So I ordered it yesterday. They took my number in case they were unable to fill the order. So I went in to pick it up. The woman there said "there were no orders this morning." Another clerk there saw my order taken and told her that there was an order, but she persisted. So I asked to speak to a manager. She went to the back. She came back out and again told me that there was no order. I replied that the clerk there had seen me make the order, and could I speak to a manager. She replied that she was a manager. I guess she got promoted when she went to get a manager. That or she thought I wouldn't recognize her? Anyway, I asked what she was going to do to make it right (thinking make my order ready this afternoon & maybe a small discount or a few extra points, but she stuck with her stupid there is no order. After 13 years shopping there, I won't be back. You can't take responsibility for your customer service screw up AND pull that "I'll get the manger whoops I'm the manager crap?" No thanks. I came here once with some friends because we needed soda and pretzels for our Wiz-War session. Wiz-War (an actual board game, actually) is best enjoyed while drinking soda and eating pretzels, but don't get the stick kind; get some sort of twist. It doesn't matter what size, although the Bavarian hard kind might be taking it a tad far. And the first rule of Wiz-War is to turn off the TV. No one wants the game to take longer than it already does because Dan's watching the ten greatest plays on SportsCenter. (Unfortunately, Dan also loves to text, so he's now distracted by that. Things were so much easier when we started playing in 1993.) Anyway, this Safeway had the stuff we needed, and the soda was on sale. It's also relatively clean considering how close to a college campus it is. read more

The only reason i shop here is because it's within walking distance from my house. The produce is really sad. The vast variety of things have bruises or are altogether moldy. They don't have a very large selection of things either which is disappointing. The customer service has always been poor at this location. The cashiers often talk amongst themselves instead of to customers and some move reeeaallllyyy slllloooow. More recently, however, the ice cream freezers have been completely inundated by ice. It is apparent that they carelessly left the ice cream out or the doors open then instead of throwing it out (which they should have, for health reasons) they decided to throw it back in the freezer. I know this is random but I love Safeway soup!! So cheap, good and at it's best when you're looking for something quick to heat up and eat for a midnight snack. I used to get the Thai Coconut Curry one but I haven't seen it lately so I don't think they make it anymore :( But at least there are still some other delicious options to choose from. I like the Tomato Bisque, Clam Chowder, Baked Potato and the Corn Chowder soups. All very delicious and worth it! With your Safeway card, it's just about $3.75 for a 24oz. Another awesome thing I love about Safeway is the $5 friday specials! Since this location is close to SCU, I'm sure students would love to take advantage of those cheap friday deals. They have all sorts of $5 specials like pizzas, fruit, seafood, soda, and even fried chicken combo meals. Check out the weekly ads for deals and make a Just for U card to load coupons and other directly onto your card (avoid the hassle of cutting/printing them out). Every now and then they even give you free stuff too! Just remember to check your account online every so often and add them to your card. :) read more

It's a pretty small Safeway, but it is open late (2am). I generally get most of my shopping done at Trader Joes & the farmer's market, but occasionally head to Safeway for stuff that I can't get at either (generally that means packaged stuff that Trader Joes doesn't have, like certain types of crackers, etc.) & household stuff (detergent, paper towels, etc.). One time, I apparently was in line behind a 49ers player & ended up helping him. He was on his phone & trying to unload his basket of groceries onto the conveyer belt, then couldn't find a spot to leave the basket because there was stuff in the way in the usual place where you leave them, but some room further back by where I was standing, so I told him "here, sir, give it to me, I'll put back here" & took it from him. I didn't know until the cashier said something to me about who he was after he left. And no, I don't remember who it was. Otherwise, there are a lot of SCU students that frequent it since it is right by campus. The parking lot is kind of weird shaped, but at least it's not really sketchy (unlike the one on San Carlos in San Jose). Man, DO THE FREAKS COME OUT AT NIGHT OR WHAT?! This one is pretty below average. College kids buying booze, people doing late night grocery shopping and only one, count'em, ONE open register. Ugh. SUCH A HASSLE. The place isn't really clean and certain aisles get a bit crowded and compact. Service is okay but it could sometimes move much quicker and more smoothly. Little story. I came here once after work. I was standing in line, all ready to pay, and there was only one lady ahead of me with a few items. No sweat, right? WRONG. Turns out, she brought her coupons. HER. COUPONS. They weren't even torn out from her paper yet! She actually brought the whole thing and started tearing them all out, right there and then, taking her precious time. And if that wasn't enough, there was a couple waiting behind me getting really touchy-feely with each other. Trust me, I don't need to paint you a picture. It was really uncomfortable. I know random stuff like this happens almost everyday. And being located near SCU, how could it not? So this doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to stop coming here. Good Lord, I hate this store. It's incredibly overpriced. Also, don't go there after 10pm at night. If you do, be prepared to wait in line at the one register they have open (chances are you'll be behind 20 undergrads buying beer, mixers, etc). It's especially irritating because, if you go during the day, they'll have at least five registers open with little to no line at each. Good looking out, Safeway! This Safeway is super convenient for me location wise but I avoid it at this point. The location is overall dirty/dingy, the shelving is never well stocked and the lines at register are long. I have changed my location and have had much better experiences at the other Safeway stores in the area. Safeway is usually the 'Safe Way", but this one can lead you down the path of the Dark Side!!!!! If you need to shop here on a weekday, try and get here between 9 am and 3pm. It's pretty good between those hours. Hell, the cashiers are standing in front of their lanes, just WAITING to ring you up!!!! Otherwise, don't even bother!!!!! After 3, you CANNOT find parking ... even ON THE STREET!!! Here's another way to look at this ... if you like driving in circles, in a small parking lot, for like 30 mins, just to park in a very cramped spot, then this is the place for you!!!!! Also, for some reason, the entire back row of the already small lot is "Reserved for SCU". I absolutely shit you not! Here's another scenario. It's 10:30pm. You've just run out of booze, and you have a craving for whatever. I know, you cleverly think to yourself, I'll go to that Safeway by the University. You pull in the lot, find a spot right quick, and enter the store. Look around, get your booze and snacks and WHOA!!!!!!!!!! There is only ONE CASHIER available for like, 30 CUSTOMERS!!!!! TOTAL WTF!!!!!!! And they WILL NOT call FOR BACKUP!!!! You are stuck with all of the losers who had the same genius idea as you!!! This has happened to me SEVERAL TIMES!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!! So why three stars and not one? First of all, this is the closest Safeway to my house. Second, the people that work here crack me up. The best thing about this location is it's staff. I've always had friendly and positive experiences with them. However from my experience this Safeway is extremely overpriced. It may be because it's by the college and the students there can't travel great distances to get their groceries, but I've noticed that going to the Safeway on homestead, just a couple miles away, is much cheaper despite having the same items. Additionally, there is a very poor selection here. Items arrived at other locations are often out of stock or just not carried at all. The final nail in the coffin is the checkout lines. There's no self-checkout and it's rare that the line is shorter than five people minimum per cashier. I would reccomend driving the extra couple miles to the homestead location or just going to a different grocery store. read more

This was my first time at this Safeway and I thought it was okay. The staff were all very pleasant and nice and it was conveniently located by the highway. I was disappointed in that I purchased a block of cheese and didn't realize until I had gotten home that the cheese was moldy. I didn't feel like driving back to return something for a few dollars, but was disappointed in the fact that it was bad. The expiration wasn't out of date and had a month left on it; however, it could have been for some other reason. read more

I'm a fairly patient person. But this Safeway is probably the worst Safeway I've been to across Washington, Oregon, and California. They lack the consistency and quality of the other safe ways I've been to so far. I inquired about the lack of self check out to a cashier and she mentioned that the store was "too small." I've been to smaller stores with that service to its customers. That would remedy their biggest issue they have with long lines. They clearly don't have enough employees at the register. Only two or three registers are open any given time I go there and there is ALWAYS a line. I hate to complain but this has been my experience each time. Gotta fix that problem because I don't mind the extra time driving to whole foods, flea market, or tj's just for a better and seamless shopping experience. read more

Poor selection (OK, the store is small). Poor parking lot (OK, the lot is small -- but there's a vacant triangle adjacent to it that would add enough spaces as there are cars circling around at any given time, so buy it, pave it and stripe it already). I've never seen any evidence of the back row's designation for "SCU Only" but that's just stupid. I'd say 99.9% of SCU clientele is there on foot, and I wouldn't hesitate to violate that restriction. Biggest complaint: Poor management (Not OK, their brains are small). Too often too many shelves have huge empty spaces where the item I'm interested in is supposed to be. Too often the only brand offered is the house brand. The management directive for cashiers to broadcast every donation they receive for whatever charity-of-the-month they're pushing -- or likely face disciplinary action -- is enough to tempt me to swear off this store entirely, but I keep visiting because it's close to me and I don't have to bring my own bags. I know who's behind the Stepford-esque behavior of the staff. It's a guy who we thankfully don't see on the floor anymore, but who is the biggest brown-noser on the planet, entirely obnoxious and impervious to any suggestion that he tone things down. The fact that this joker has been promoted and is now calling the shots demonstrates the skewed mentality of upper management at Safeway. And then there are the SCU students. So self-absorbed that they're incapable of grasping the concept of sharing the space with other shoppers. It's like they're the only people in the world. You get the same thing at Round Table, Smoke Eaters (or whatever they are now) and Pizza My Heart across the street. I avoid all three not just due to the clueless students but also because their food is lousy since they know drunk students aren't fussy. Now that the holidays are over, I'll be going back to the Valley Fair Safeway, which is a little larger and has a better selection, parking is workable and it's on the Santa Clara side of the shopping center so you don't have to bring your own bags. I have a business relationship that puts Safeway gift cards in my possession on a regular basis. I'd shop elsewhere otherwise, but it wouldn't be as convenient. Where I live, no matter which direction I head when leaving my house, the closest store is a Safeway. I wish that situation was different, but it is what it is. read more

This wasn't one of my favorite Safeways to visit but it is convenient and close to a whole bunch of other places on the Alameda. I hope since their remodel that it will be just as good as the one on Stevens Creek near Lawrence (my favorite). One downer about this one (which might not hold true since remodel) is that it does not carry a large variety of seafood!! They said that their selection is super downsized since it's near SCU and most of the customers are students (who apparently cannot afford or eat seafood??) Anyway, I need my seafood! I have been a regular shopper here for over 2 years, due to convenience. Now, before I begin, let me note that generally speaking, I think Safeway is a fine supermarket chain that has a broad selection of food that is usually good quality. This particular Safeway, however, is a notable exception. The produce is left out past its prime, there are almost never any fresh baked goods out, if they have two similar products of different flavors, if one flavor runs out, they wait until people buy up the other flavor before ordering more. Anyone shopping in the middle of the day is assumed to be a mystery shopper and subject to harassment in the form of feigned courtesy. All this would be ok, but what really irks me is the lines. What management genius decided to put only 2 full time checkout people working at the front at peak times (5-6pm)? These poor folks are able to call in "reinforcements" but only after the line gets super long and goes well back into the aisles. Even then, reinforcements is usually only 1 extra person. This is in a city of 100,000; the supermarket sits across the street from SCU, with 8,500 students. We're not talking west Podunk. You go to ANY other supermarket, including OTHER Safeways, and at peak times there are always at least 3-4 checkout people constantly there, and the bigger ones many more. I appreciate the desire for employees not to have downtime, but the nature of retail is that there are always peaks and valleys of activity; some downtime *has* to be acceptable if it means your customers don't have to wait 20 minutes. read more

Oh my goodness, this Safeway has failed me SO many times! I went to pick up a couple bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne to celebrate a co-workers engagement. So I go find someone to get it from the back. I was waiting, waiting, waiting... he finally comes back 10 minutes later to tell me he doesn't have the key, but is going to try to track down the person with it. Another 10 minutes has gone by, and FINALLY, he comes back with the goods. Fine! A week later, I go back to buy a few more bottles of the same champagne. This time, I couldn't find ANYONE to help me. I had to resort to asking the lady behind the bakery. She was nice enough to call someone over to the alcohol aisle. I was standing there for a good 5-8 minutes before someone came by. Ok, same deal, but this time, the guy comes back to tell me he can't get the bottles out of the back because the Store Manager doesn't leave the keys and she's already gone for the day. Are you serious, can a girl just get a bottle of champagne at 6:30pm on a weekday!?! What a effin' train wreck! I only go to this particular Safeway because it's literally across the street from my apartment. Now that I'm moving out, I'm happy I don't have to deal with this horse shit anymore. By the way, the 1-star is for the Starbucks staff who makes my coffee every Friday morning. You guys are great but I wish they would put another person back there to help ease the load. read more

Just the worst. I'm not particularly picky about grocery stores and because this one is close to my house I come here often, but not by choice. I keep thinking we should go to the other one that's a little farther away because they have actual produce that's not rotting, but then I forget because this one is so close. The selection is awful. Most grocery bakeries make bread at least twice per day so you can stop by after work and get something semi-fresh for dinner, but the bread always feels and tastes like it's headed for crouton-ville. Yesterday I guess they didn't make bread at all; I stopped by about 6 pm and there was nothing on the shelves except some sandwich bread. Last week I picked up some sweet potatoes, and a few days later I went to bake them and one was completely rotten. I routinely find large patches of mold on the produce. One time we got milk that didn't have the protective ring seal on the inside. It smelled fine but we dumped it--not taking any chances. Yesterday I bought milk and made sure the ring was sealed inside, and it tasted fine, but the container felt a little warm when I took it out of the refrigerator. The wine and alcohol selection is okay, although naturally there's not a lot of high-end stuff because it's right next to SCU and those students aren't going to be interested in high-dollar wines or good vodka. The deli is meh at best and the bakery is just awful. The cookies are as hard as crackers and the doughnuts are stale no matter what time of day you buy them. Frozen section is okay, and so are packaged foods. Basically this store is a glorified 7-11. Not a good choice if you want to buy all your groceries here, because they are severely lacking in selection, and the produce is questionable at best. There is always a huge line, day or night, no matter what time you go in. I thought with graduation last weekend and students leaving the area in droves that it would be relatively empty, but yesterday I stood in line with six items for probably 20 minutes while the overworked employees did the best they could. Shoppers who are buying their week's worth of groceries are routinely forced into the express lanes because there will only be one lane open. There are no self-checkouts and more often than not, only two or three of the ten or so checkout lanes will be open. The store is woefully understaffed, and the employees do the best they can. I'm giving them one star for the employees, who are always super nice and as helpful as possible considering they work them to the bone and they don't seem to get a lot of relief. They're always out of stock of at least a couple things I need (basic stuff, nothing fancy), and their produce is just atrocious. On the other hand, it's great if you want a thirty-pack of cheap beer and some Hamburger Helper. read more

This place needs some work to be decent. This is the grocery store a lot of SJSU students use when school is in session. Its too small to handle so many people, I usually do my shopping during the evening to avoid this. Otherwise its pretty average for the most part. They don''t have super premium health food items but they have your typical fresh and frozen items, most of which are priced well. They don't have a large alcohol selection either, so if your looking for some special craft beers or something then it's probably not the place. A huge improvement would be to add more cash registers and cashiers as the lines are usually long and slow. Unfortunately the deli is just terrible too, there was a new guy making my sandwich and he forgot a fair amount of the ingredients including onions which i love. I can forgive that, hell I've been there, but no matter the Safeway location I still end up disappointed with their sandwiches to the point where I'm just not going to bother anymore. I have a feeling this Safeway will be hit or miss for a lot of people. My advice is if you live close then you might find it useful to shop here, otherwise I suggest you find another grocery store in the area. read more

Simply put - its the college grocery store. If you're like me and split between this one and the San Carlos one it all depends on what you are looking for. If less selection, Starbucks, and coeds is your answer, pick this one. Like most Safeways, it has the late night convenience factor with the only one register open inconvenience factor. The parking here is absolutely awful and at night there is only one line open and there have often been 15 people in line that are lining up all the way down the the freezer aisle! What baffles me is that they never open up another check stand aisle and I have had to wait over 20 minutes in line which is absolutely ridiculous for one item. The store is really not very nice and is in serious need of renovation especially being near SCU and being a high traffic store. The produce and meat department here and not nice at all and the prices here are often quite high unless you are following the weekly ad and check what the few great weekly deals are. I really try and avoid shopping here all together and do the majority of my shopping at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Target. If I shop at Safeway at all, I tend to go to the Safeway near my parents house as that is a much nicer, new store that has a better stock, carries more organic ingredients, and is much nicer in general. read more

This Safeway is a complete disappointment. In the last 2 months, their registers/system has gone down. Why haven't they fixed this problem for good... get a new system people. They always have long lines here too, because they have so few checkers... They're often out of key items on their shelves too. They should have a back up way of doing transactions, which apparently they don't, so I'm stuck here right now... with no indication from them how long this is going to take. Visited this location today Tuesday at 10:30 am. I specify the time and day because I couldn't see the lady's badge because she had it flipped backwards. The lady that was "helping" at self checkout has no service skills and little to no care about customer satisfaction. My issue was simple, I saw a different price for an item I picked out and when asking for help she interrupted me while explaining my issue saying "that is what it is". I then said, trying to break tension "oh I'm sorry I just saw it was priced per pound not per item" to which she said "no, it's not". So I asked her to remove the item and tried to hand it to her and she ignored this action. I placed it on the side since I could tell she did not want to help, which she noticed and said "don't leave it there give it to me". I've dealt with her a couple of times already, but today I decided I'd say something because I saw her mistreat another customer as well. I give it 2 stars and not 1 because there are a handful of employees that are nice and the location is convenient. Other than that it's trash. read more

This Safeway is average. Couple pros and cons. Pros: It's open until 2am on weekends, so that's convenient if you need to get stuff late night. Also, it has a sandwich bar and sushi for lunch, which I don't believe all Safeway stores have. Cons: this Safeway is on the smaller end of grocery stores. It obviously has all of the essentials, but some of the specialty items and aisles aren't as well stocked simply because of lack of capacity (eg Asian foods). Also, the lines are often super long at night. It's kind of frustrating. I wish they had a group of self checkouts, but again space constraints. I think 3 stars is a fair assessment. My family and I have dubbed this College Crappy Station market - While that isn't really a bad thing you have to be careful about what hours you go or you are in lines FOREVER! I like to go after 9am but before 2pm and only to get certain items because they do lack some of the items that I buy. And NEVER NEVER NEVER expect to find the beer you like here on the weekend with it being close to a college and all. :) I really like the staff here they are funny and really nice - it could also be I have been shopping here on and off for 11 years. The parking lot sucks after 3pm and you can't find parking generally between 5-7pm. read more

This is one of the worst Safeways. Long lines and few cashiers. Why have 7 registers and only 2 in use at all times throughout the day? Self checkout would be helpful if more employees can't be hired. read more

I wish this Safeway was open 24 hours :( But then again, I guess I don't really need to go to Safeway after 2AM :P It's really convenient to get to, because it's right across the street from my dorm at SCU. The lines can get pretty ridiculous, especially since a majority of the time, there are only one or two cashiers... It's a pretty small Safeway, so they don't have ALL the stuff they have at regular/big ones, but it's enough. I also feel like it's organized strangely, but maybe that's because I'm used to different Safeways.. But they never have my strawberry cheesecake Ben&Jerry's... :( read more
