This used to be my favorite store but the customer service has declined dramatically over the last few years. I've slowly started shopping at other stores that are farther from my home. Today I visited because it's been over a month since I've been there, kinds missed it. But I had an extremely rude cashier named Yvonne who was obviously unhappy and also had very bad breath. I went to Safeway this morning to restock on my groceries, which included a pack of Smirnoff alcohol. The cashier, Mariah, asked for my ID, and I handed it to her. She looked at my ID and looked at me back and forth. Granted, my license is from Florida, I understand it look different then CA license so I offered to show to her my date of birth on the ID. She proceeded to ask me to state my home address listed on the ID. I'm confused. In the middle of this line with people behind me you want me to recite my home address? That's a safety issue so I told her it was on my ID. She insisted and asked me THREE MORE TIMES!!! Each time with a little bit more attitude And my answer remains the same...It's on my ID, the one I just gave to you. Per California law, you do not have to state your home address when purchasing alcohol; you must simply present a valid ID that contains a photo and is issued by a government agency, which I did. Mariah left the register with an attitude without saying excuse or nothing, came back with a different cashier, and told her I refused to state my home address. The other cashier (whom I forget to get her name but I'm thankful for her for picking up Mariah slack) asked me to confirm my date of birth while looking at my ID, and I did. She then stepped back so Mariah could proceed checking out the rest of my groceries. Mariah stepped aside and refused to help me with my groceries while making hand gestures as if she's done with me. Now I understand, if she felt uncomfortable with selling alcohol, that's a Mariah problem, but this is customer service. She could have put the alcohol aside, she could've sent me to the customer service line for proper check-out, so many things could have been done differently. But she stepped aside and refused to check out my entire grocery order. Keep in mind I'm the customer, and she treated me and looked at me as if I was someone who's less than her. It's not okay. That was Humiliating. You never know what other people are going through for you to treat them as such. I simply needed to restock my groceries this morning, and I left the store feeling distraught and humiliated. Mariah, please do better. This world is a dangerous place, please don't put people's lives at risk, educate yourself, and work on your attitude when you clock in to do a job that requires customer service or any job for that matter. I did called the store and spoke to a manager who apologized for Mariah's action, and confirmed that he will follow up rather reciting your home address is a form of verification to purchase alcohol in this Safeway because my ID is out of state although by California, it is not a requirement. read more

I had come in the store upon opening at 5am . I just have one issue the lady whom works at the register upon opening never wants to give cash back and makes a very unpleasant scene . Please give this cashier enough funds to give cash back their was a lady out of gas in your parking lot she had stated to me that the cashier in the store would not give her cash from her EBT although I had a gas can and helped her out but it's really ashame due to cash back is a service safeway provides and it deprives some homeless people from taking the bus. and it's truly sad because I know safeway supports the disabled and community needs.we do not put signs on your register and make a scene and embarrass one due to just need $20 cash back it's truly sad and then she talks about everyone and I really think thats very wrong. I came to buy food for myself and my friend wanted to buy himself drinks. We rang up together not thinking anything of it. The man Tobias asks for both of our IDs. I just got off of work, I don't bring my wallet with me to work. We look confused why do you need both IDs? Long story short, they tell us to leave because we are making a big deal. Advice, if you're coming here with a group or a friend, don't go with them when they purchase the alcohol. read more

This is just your average university Safeway. There is another one near Stanford University. It is smaller than other safeways in the area which means you will find very little of what you need to buy. This store is more of a grab and go because the parking lot is very sketchy if you park in front of the store. If you are lucky park near the Taco Bell because they are working with car predators. If you are a SCU student please do not drive here because it can be very tough. I would highly recommend you exercise caution when parking in front of the store and be ready to call the cops. Better yet call NBC Bay Area and have them take a look. I would not come here again unless I really have to. However this is not all bad news because like all Safeways they have 5 dollar specials. read more

We got a birthday cake from them and it was a really good tasting cake! It was super moist and we loved that it was fresh strawberries inside. I actually thought it was going to be strawberry sauce or jam!! We got it with buttercream but I do have some things I'd change for next time. I'll be getting whipped cream even though I'm not a huge fan of either. The buttercream was good but it just got really hard after a night in the fridge. The only other bummer was that we made the purchase inline for a Mario kart cake with toys in top. We found out that they don't have any of the toys. Neither do the other 6 Safeways in the area. What???? So we had to settle at the same price for a print out Pokemon came. It still came out cute with his face but I had one sad kid that wanted the little toys. It also made for last minute running/calling around. The staff was really nice about helping us figure out what to do. We have also tried the tres leches cake at another friend's house and it was delicious! Way better than a lot of other grocery cakes! read more

Terrible Safeway. I was shopping there on a Wednesday night and there's always a small chance that what you're looking hasn't already been claimed by droves of SCU students. The evening that I went the parking lot was extremely empty, but apparently you can't shop at Safeway and support the local nearby Santa Clara businesses afterwards because by the time I concluded my post-shopping dinner, my car had been towed--in less than a 3 hour timeframe! The property manager seriously needs to reflect and reevaluate whether they prioritize prospective customers who are looking to shop here or whatever arrangement they have with the towing company. Save yourself the trip, time, and money, and shop elsewhere. Extremely disappointed. read more

0 stars!! I went shopping here tonight and what was my impression of this place? Upon walking towards the entrance, I see a customer standing near the doors. I overhear an employee tell him that he must move. He responds that he is just waiting for his ride. The employee tells him he must wait farther out. I find that rude since it is night and already dark out. This should've been a warning to me but still, I go inside. Silly me. After a full shift at work I needed to run errands (like buying pet food before coming to Safeway. I check the navigation to see which is the closest location to me and I find this location. I thought I'd enjoy some twisted tea to end the day when I got home. Since I was buying pet food earlier and needed help carrying the boxes, I was accompanied on my errands, to get a helping hand. Anyways, when I go to check out the twisted tea, I get asked to show ID for everyone with me. Excuse me?!? I'M BUYING AND IT'S FOR ME. I explain this to the cashier and she doesn't budge. I ask for the manager, and a young young man named Tobias comes along. He's the manager? I don't think so by his customer service (or lack of). He doesn't apologize for the inconvenience like a normal manager should. Instead, he tells me that since they are next to a college, they card everyone present. Okay... so this location is making up their own rules? Nevermind being at least 21 then. I tell him the same thing. That I'm buying it and it's FOR ME. I ask why does he need another person's ID. He says, "because he's standing next to you" and moves the box aside. So I should shop unaccompanied just to satisfy the employee's whims? I don't appreciate his attitude so I tell him I will report this. He irately replies "okay". He might as well be rolling his eyes at me. This used to be my go-to Safeway store way back when I lived in the Rose Garden area just a couple blocks walking distance from here. I like the smaller stores, because they are easier to navigate and I tend to know where everything is. Which makes for an easier shopping experience for me. We stopped here the other day to quickly pick up a few things, and, unlike many stores which require me to drop several hundred dollars for a cart full, Safeway is a great bargain if you buy the sales items, which I always do! I also like that they have the self check-out, which I like doing when I don't have too many things in the cart. Solid Safeway! read more

Never park here ; there is a small sign that says when you leave the premise your vehicle will be towed immediately. Also , the premise only covers the 4 shops including Safeway and no other shops around that parking space . they tow the car if you ever happen to leave the premise for any reason and leave your car there even for few mins . I learnt this lesson after paying $$$ in towing . I spoke to Matt the property manager , morris towing company and the Santa Clara PD. None of them were helpful . read more

Safeway isn't my go to store but this one is literally down the block for me so I walk here to get those few items that I might've forgotten or need when I'm cooking/baking. They have good inventory of things and everything is really organized. I always self check out since I only get a few items. Parking has never been an issue it's a huge lot! This Safeway is horrible. Once the deli counter was unoccupied for at least six minutes until I had to ask the front checkout cashier to call someone for service. Another time same thing happened. This last time I went to get an eight piece order of chicken, but when I went home and opened the bucket there were only six pieces of chicken inside. Needless to say I won't be going back. read more

It's gotta be me. No matter which Safeway I go to, invariably, the prices charges don't match the shelf signage. This weekend, we're in the San Jose area for a show of sorts. Staying kind of nearby, I wanted some Cole Slaw and Macaroni Salad for tonight and Orange Juice for tomorrow morning. While we were at it, I grabbed two two-liter Diet Pepsi and two two-liter Diet Dr. Pepper. Shelf tags said 4/$5 plus CRV. Got back to our hotel and I was charged $4.58 minus .58 plus .20 per pair. In other words, $8 instead of $5. I know that if I call the store, they'll be happy to give me a refund if I just drop by at my convenience. However, my time is more valuable than $3. My bad for not checking my receipt before leaving the store. I'm tired and even more grumpy than usual. Considering we used to be Safeway shareholders back in the day before they sold out and then Albertsons took over. If I were Albertsons or Safeway, I'd be embarrassed. read more

We cut the cake and as everyone is eating the cake we noticed there was mold on the cake that they had a ON DISPLAY!!! Management gave us our money back, but they didn't believe it was mold on the cake, so my sister kindly returned their cake. I only go here (if needed) after devouring thermal tenders and onion rings next door: Wicked Chicken (used to be Cluck-U / Smoke Eaters). My dad is in VA for a 2 week order that he has to go to every year so that leaves me w/ the responsibility, a little bit of guilt w/ a little bit of wanting to spend time w/ my mom. My mom only eats at a few places and it does get boring after 20+ years: TK Noodle, Pho Nhu Y, Pho Tau Bay, Pho Nguyen, Crazy Buffet, Lillie Mae's House of Soul Food, Sam Kee Restaurant, Hometown Buffet, Texas Roadhouse, Dakao Sandwiches, and Thanh so if you've read my past reviews or know me personally, you will understand that I hardly eat Asian food; when I do, it's purely because I have to. I do get random cravings but I dream about Philly cheesesteaks, burgers, and pizzas more than anything. Back to my review. I took my mom to Wicked Chicken last Sunday for some good finger foods and some football. After our meal, I remembered that I had to get a gallon of milk for the monster so instead of driving to another location, I simply walked a few feet to this Safeway. Like the Safeway off of Berryessa, this too needs some upgrade: lights, reorganization.. something because it looks depressing. Identical to most of the Safeways, your basic grocery needs can be met here but don't forget to look out for sales in the paper! This Safeway is terrible and disappointing. We now drive out of the way to a different location (or grocery store altogether). The prices are ridiculous because, one, it is Safeway and, two, it is next to a college campus. You would think that they would have a good snack aisle for a college town, but every time we have come here the snacks are seriously lacking compared to other locations. My friend was craving some flavored pretzels and we ended up driving to a different Safeway because this one had such a lack of options. read more

2nd time, I have to go to Starbucks inside, and they have the rudest employees. Visiting family and Starbucks across from them wasn't opened yet. So I drove the 3 blocks here, and the young man has an attitude. I asked for two drinks and thought about a third. He turns his head and says no were out. I asked about another, and he turned his head and sighed and said no. Not a "I'm sorry, but we are out of these drinks." Other Starbucks apologize and are very nice about things. Someone who is a regular showed up, and he was super nice and asked about his morning and was happy. BOYCOTT THIS SAFEWAY AT ALL COSTS. They have 1 or 2 signs saying they tow away, and they indeed TOW AWAY. But i only saw tow away at owners expense, NOT THE 1 HR LIMIT. IF YOU PARK HERE FOR MORE THAN 1 HOUR YOU WILL BE TOWED. They see this as a money opportunity, and they tow over 20 cars a day, and $400 to get it back. I was shopping for a Halloween party last night, so i had a lot of ingredients to get. Not to mention, my indecisive nature can never seem to decide quickly. I spent about 55-65 minutes shopping and then when i came out my CAR WAS TOWED. Are you kidding me??? Just for being an indecisive and slow shopper? This is beyond unacceptable and unfair, please boycott this place. They want to make money off your mistakes, and they don't have enough signage warning you about the 1 hr limit. I'm really sorry for anyone that also got their car towed, it's unfair and i'm sure this company knows it. read more

Do not go to this Safeway. I went and got groceries from Safeway and ran into an old friend. We went to grab shawarma sandwiches from a place near by thats a very close walking distance and we come back to find both of our cars towed!!!! I had to pay 530$ to take my car out. A kind gentleman also told us as we were panicking they towed his car two nights ago. Save yourself by going to another Safeway. This Safeway does not car about their customers and have a contract with a towing company towing many peoples cars!!!! This store is not the highest in quality, but is also nowhere near the worst you can shop at. Just like any other store around, it would always be in your best interest to pay attention to sticker prices and weekly specials , as shopping smart can always save you money. I love coming here for their five dollar Friday specials, it always encompasses a nice variety for the price, but does sell out at times. One thing I do not like about this location is their deli workers. They work fairly quick, but are not always willing to help you with everything you need, especially when they get busy. It's part of their job to work the full counter, but often times they will tell you that the deli is closed or they are too busy to do their job. read more

One star seems too high. I've visited this store 3x on Saturday morning (7-830AM) during the past six weeks. During the first two visits, the sushi chef had her mask on, BUT nose exposed. I called and complained last week, and the visiting manager said they would take care of it. Today about 80% of the store employees had noses exposed, and there were also store guests with noses exposed and an 8(?) year old without a mask. One employee was helping someone carry groceries to their car and was wi 3ft of them with their nose out. Everyone in the deli (about 6 people) had noses exposed. Someone walked thru and told them to cover their noses. After the person left, everyone exposed their noses again. No culture of public safety at this store. I'm very curious if their lack of public health concerns carries over to food safety as well. I will not go back to this store. read more

Safeway, please do us a favor. A) hire people for the floral department that actually LIKE to help customers with their flower and balloon requests. Every time I ask for help getting balloons here or having flowers done up they give a *sigh* and make me feel like I've just asked them to create a Rose Parade float! B) can you have your reps who answer the phone know exactly what they are talking about and quote prices correctly. This is the SECOND time that I have called about balloon prices and was told one price by the phone and then when I come in told a MUCH higher price. The employee could've cared less and didn't even want to ask a supervisor if the other price could have been done since it was quoted wrong. Do not shop here. This is a private parking lot for which they are legally allowed to tow your car after one hour, but don't tell you this. They actually dispatched a tow truck at 58 minutes and authorized the tow at exactly 60 minutes, giving you no warning. They obviously don't want me shopping here, which I will never do again. This is a predatory tow situation, in my opinion. read more

I only come to this Safeway out of convenience, however it is not my favorite. This is a great place to come if you want to spend 15 minutes or more waiting in line to check out. There are only ever 2 or 3 cashiers open so the lines are always 6 deep or more and block the grocery aisles. This causes many oblivious people to cut in line because they are unaware of how long the line actually is. I actually saw this happen right in front of me yesterday which is what prompted me to write this review. Their computers often crash or are very slow which contributes to the line problem. This Safeway could defiantly use some self checkout machines to speed up the lines. Also, it is very expensive. The items here seem more pricey than other Safeway's in the area. On the plus side, this Safeway has a Starbucks and plenty of alcohol because it is a college Safeway. They are also very generous with the Monopoly tickets they hand out. read more
