I wish this was a good grocery store, but the staples I buy are not carried at this location. Every other store nearby carries these, but not this Safeway. I don't know who decides what to carry, but they no longer get my business. I live 1 block away and have to go elsewhere to get my weekly shopping. Even the Safeway at Hunters Woods stock these. The saddest part about this is the customer service is some of the best services that I have ever received at a grocery store PERIOD. The only reason I'm giving this a 1 star review is the price and quality of the products. I am not sure if these prices cover all Safeways or if the prices are only like this for this location. Humboldt creamery produces amazing ice cream. After buying it from Costco, I became obsessed looking for their other flavors. A rep from the creamery responded that the Safeways on the east coast carry them. I dashed over here after getting the news and heading to the ice cream section. My excitement turned to disappointment when I saw they did not have it in stock. I couldn't find any employees to ask so I was about to leave before wandering around the store (figured if I drove all he way here, I should buy something at least). I wonder how this store was still operating. Some of the products looked outdated and certain sections (especially meat and produce) had a weird stench to it. Like wandering through a maze of bad deli meat. The protein is available for cheap so they have that going for them but inspect before you purchase. It's obvious that there are other grocery stores available in the area. But I'm still hopeful that Humboldt Creamery ice cream will be here at some point or at the other locations. TL;DR: $250 worth of groceries not delivered. On the phone over 10 times today, keep getting jerked around, promised a refund (on the charge and then the second charge). May have to call credit card... I am really trying to be nicer, I don't want to rip on places, but this place has strained my patience. During the COVID times I am trying maximize the online ordering and grocery delivery. I can pretty much guarantee you (having tried this several times), if you place an order they will: - remove 15-25% of your order for being "out of stock" Even when you confirm it at check-out, choose substitution, and add a note asking them to get whatever brand is available (i.e. - any milk, whole, low-fat, fat-free, any brand, just get me some milk). - Fail to deliver at least a couple more items, forcing you to call customer service and try to negotiated a partial refund. This last time takes the cake. I placed a large order - try to get my money's worth - 43 items. Right away, six items not in stock (including milk of any kind), which I know is b.s. Then they deliver. Guy standing at my door holding three bags. Says that's it, that's everything. He delivered 4 items. Okay, technically it was 9 because it was multiples of canned goods. I take it, then look at the receipt. They charged me for everything, to the tune of almost 250 dollars. I call Safeway customer service, several times because the line keeps dropping. Finally, a 'real' person. She offers me a refund, or to re-order the items for delivery on a different day. I am a bit bent now, I ask why they cannot deliver the goods today - after all - this is a spendy order and it's their fault. She says I can call the store directly to see what they can do, but now she will not put in a re-delivery because they might deliver twice. I tell her I can tell the store there is a re-delivery order and ask if they can deliver on that today. She says that may cause them to deliver it twice. Oh noes!! I respond it seems she's more worried about giving me too much stuff than trying to fulfill my original order. This is peachy: She immediately goes off on me, yelling and going nuts, then the telephone hangs up. Not sure if that is coincidence, accident, or if someone near her ended the call because she was out of control. Unhinged. Catastrophically melted down. I think she has issues beyond her job. I hope she gets help. She did get me the store's direct number before she went nutso, so I called them......six times. Every time I get to Customer Service they try to transfer me, someone answers and the line clicks off. I finally call the pharmacy and asked to be transferred to the store manager, "Rob," and that gets through to Rob. Rob hears me, wants to transfer me to their delivery line, I tell him I keep getting dropped. Somehow, he does it right, gets me there. The lady I talk to is incredulous at the size of their FUBAR. At least she is nice -- she wants to order a full re-delivery of all goods, and she even tells me she will get milk and a couple other items that were listed as out of stock. I tell her thank you very much, and I list the items I did receive - I am not trying to be greedy and scam double groceries from them. I just want what I paid for, delivered the day I asked. (I ordered a day ahead and paid for the specific date/time range of delivery). And she said they will get the re-delivery done today, as soon as possible. Still waiting on that....will update this review once those groceries arrive. Update: Second delivery never happened, despite repeated calls and promises. I feel like every time I go to a Safeway, no matter where it is, I always. Always have to ask them to please move carts from blocking the singular wheelchair accessible entrance. Every. Single. Time. Almost every different Safeway I go to. I have to even if it's a day I don't use my chair because what happens to the next mobility impaired person? (Docking stars because of pricing and (as mentioned in many other reviews) not having enough cashiers to work during busy times): It's your typical grocery store set up. All the shelves that I enter are usually fully stocked so that is good. Safeway isn't the most affordable grocery store out there, but nonetheless, I go from time to time because of the convenient location. My family and I have been customers of this store since we moved to the area about 10ish years ago. I had a brief pleasant conversation with one of the older employees earlier today who had mentioned to me about the long history of several of the workers at that location. They don't have to work there for many many years, but my educated guess is the culture and the mostly positive environment is what keeps them there. For everyone that's complaining about the self-checkout lines being removed, a very typical danger of having the self-checkout line system dominate is that shop lifting is likely to increase. If the store is losing money, the human employees lose hours. Hopefully the store will pick up in efficiency over time. read more

I came here to this grocery store because it was close, and I only needed to buy less than 20 grocery items for the week. This are is a new assignment for me, and it seemed like this store was clean and the people working here seemed nice enough. I can say that the produce section is expansive and plentiful. The ordinary fruits and vegetables appeared to be clean and fresh, so I picked up some apples and bananas. The sign outside indicates that there is a Signature Cafe, which I couldn't locate at all within the store. The deli area seemed to be enhanced to include some hot take out type of food. Perhaps this is the signature Cafe area? It was all good. The prices are slightly higher I think than what you would normally find in a nearby grocery store. read more

This store makes me need to go to therapy. There's never parking in this parking lot but that is the smallest of the issues. There is no ramp to roll your car down so when you're leaving the store with all your groceries in your cart you have to clunk your cart off the curb, and then there's NO cart return so you have to CLUNK your cart back up the curb to return it. I would'nt be as angry but the two grocery stores in south reston are Safeway's and we would all like some more variety please. Also, the self checkout machines are awful. They consistently think you have an unexpected item in the bag so the manager at Safeway is constantly just overriding the machines for people. Also their pricing system is wrong and many times I have had to go back to get a refund for something I was overcharged for. Also look at this line on a Saturday morning. Can we PLEASE get a different grocery store in South Lakes Shopping Center. This store is awful. Leaky refrigerator aisles always have rolls and rolls of paper towels sopping up the copious amounts of water on the floor. They carry limited brands and limited items of other brands. I was told that CA orders for them. CA has no clue what we want/like here in VA. The check out lines are painfully long and extremely slow. They actually took out the self check aisles which were a bonus! Really want the new Shopping Center owner's to ditch them a put a better grocer in its place. read more

This is an update from my previous review. A lot of small issues I had have been improved over the last year. The restocking has not been an issue anymore and self-checkout systems have been significantly improved. Now there are rarely any errors and the checkout has a higher space capacity. read more

This isn't one of the new fancy Safeways that have been popping up closer to DC, but nonetheless, it doesn't look rundown either. You have to give them credit for that. Things are easy to locate, self-checkout isn't difficult, though they had a weird knife giveaway and were asking people who spent over $10 to see an associate for a stamp. That was odd. read more

Sometimes the self check out backs up because there are so many instances where you need assistance and they normally have someone assigned there. The store is clean. Always found this store convenient and the staff very professional. They have to be - the behavior of some the customers in the parking lot and in the store can be shocking. Unfortunately we see this attitude of entitlement more and more in N. Virginia - and Reston. Store has a wide selection and is clean. Here's some talking points from the last three times I went to the store: 1. On all three occasions I encountered staff not wearing masks. Twice, it was in the bakery section. People making baked goods from scratch without wearing a mask... Just what you want. 2. Two of the three times there were items that were not priced correctly when I got to the self-checkout lane. On both occasions, after I waited for a staff member to come over, I was told I would have to go back to the aisle and get the right price. I decided just to let those items go because, really, in addition to ringing up the items myself do I really have to run back and forth to show them how the items are mispriced? 3. At one point, when I was having trouble ringing in a code, a staff member not wearing gloves came over to ring in the items. He grabbed them right out of my hands and rang them up and then put them in my bag. I had to make him take them out of the bag, because I didn't want his filthy covid laced hands all over my food. Mispriced items seemed to be a theme here. At this point, I think this is a deliberate attempt by the store management to overprice items and increase their profit margins, under the belief that most people won't check their receipts before they leave. So you know what? I encourage everybody reading this to use the self-checkout lanes and steal things from them. How is that any different from what they're doing? They're stealing from us why shouldn't we steal from them? read more

This store is everything that's wrong with this world and society that we live in. There's no happiness or good vibes in the store, and everyone that I encountered working there was either on their phones or staring at a clock trying to escape their miserable existences. Ok - 3 out of 5 stars. Why you may ask? Well, read on. The layout and ambiance within the store actually reminds me of Harris Teeter in Crystal City. Prices are a tad on the high side - but then again, what grocery store in Fairfax county isn't getting their gouge from the yuppies and other uppety ups (or wannabes like me) who can afford to look past an extra $0.20 here, an extra $1.00 there. The hot food line is pretty good - I used to get lunches from here when I didn't have time. The olive spread they put in their deli sandwiches is quite tasty (not as good as Bonaroti but hey, you get what you pay for). What I'm turned off about is that there is a gentleman there who...well, doesn't seem to like to wash very much. It's one thing coming out of my shopping euphoria only to have a sour smell hit my nose. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was - it was a cross between sweat and just something else I couldn't put my finger on.... SEMEN. This is according to my hetero lady friend who I will trust implicitly on (having not put my nose near my own man-juices). So, after being hesitant to come back, her comments and vehement insistence in the car pushed me over the top to not return. I think the conversation went something like this: Me: Dude, did you smell that guy? I mean, I felt like I got punched in the nose with a bag of @$$holes. D: Oh man, that was just totally gross... Me: Yeah, I can't put my finger on it.... D: Oh I can. The dude smells like he jacked off and just didn't clean up before he came to work. Me: WHAT????? AND HE TOUCHED MY SODAS???? D: Well, I can tell you who's office fridge I won't be visiting for a while.... Yeah, totally non-plussed. I actually took the box of sodas, got the alcohol pads from the first aid cabinet, donned the latex gloves, and then proceeded to "disinfect" my sodas prior to opening the biohazard contaminated box. Honestly, I didn't die (I mean, women and gay men haven't for thousands of years, right?) so I figure that while he may have inseminated the outside of my box, that I dodged the tad pole bullet - this time. This grocery store continues to get worse and worse. It's a shame to give it one star because I know so many of the employees here by name, but it's not their fault. There simply aren't enough employees around, and clearly, it's Safeway policy to run out of sale items relatively often. As I said in my old review, the checkers that know what they're doing have been working there for a long time, and were hired at a reasonable wage. The new employees get paid jack shit, and it shows, because they are horrendously slow at checking people out. I'll wait in a double long line for Fahim or Bob, knowing that it'll move quicker than line run by an employee I've never seen before. The turnover on the new employees is crazy, also. These people come in with improper training, get thrown into a stressful situation, and quit for obvious reasons. They run out of vegetables and meat that are on sale fairly frequently, which is really aggravating if you shop the way I do (I figure out what expensive stuff is on sale and then plan my meal around those items). If I'm planning on buying more than 20 dollars worth of stuff, I always go to Shoppers all the way out in Herndon or the Harris Teeter at Spectrum. Unfortunately, even when I only have to buy one or two items, I still often wait in pretty long lines at this Safeway. Blows. read more

I hate this grocery store but I continue to shop here because it is right next to my house. Something changed in management a few years ago for the worse and now there are never enough checkers and never anyone at the customer service desk. The produce is pathetic, especially if you shop in the evening. Clearly the produce is stocked up in the morning and never refreshed. I have found expired items on the shelves many times, including milk. The prices are higher than you can find elsewhere. More than once I have gone to the customer service counter (to pick up dry cleaning, return something, or get a refund for coupons the checker forgot to scan) and then told the customer service person is in a register and I have to go back and stand in line. GRRRR! The only saving grace for this place is the checker Bob. He actually talks to the customers, jokes around with them, bags the groceries as if he cares whether you can lift the bags and whether your items will get broken, and gives out some candy. Come in here a few times to pick up snacks or protein supplements during work hours. It's very quiet. The store is really big though. The service is not bad. Pretty friendly people. Our local Safeway is truly special - and it's the employees that make the difference. Even though they have self-checkout lanes, if Mr. Bob is there I will always choose his line; he and the rest of the staff are so friendly! Same with Ms. Marian at the Customer Service line. If you like having your items rung up incorrectly 95% of the time, this is the Safeway for you! I constantly find items listed on sale on the ubiquitous yellow sale tags that are not, according to the computer, actually on sale. I suspect this is done on purpose to trick folks into buying extra quantities. Inevitable, the cashier assumes you are trying to scam them, resulting in a long, complicated discussion, a visit to the section with the sale tag to review, arguments, etc. It's insane; I've given up. read more

Closest grocery store to my residence and where I do most of the food shopping. Recent renovation has expanded the store to provide more prepared foods, added a Starbucks and dry cleaner station. As with most stores, inventory is hit or miss. This store usually has most of what I need. If not, I can venture to the Hunter Woods Safeway, a few miles away. I was returning from downtown DC late at night and this Safeway was the closest grocery store to the Reston station. I should've looked a bit farther. My problems with this supermarket are selection is limited, most of the items are overpriced, and they were out of some rather basic items. In addition, this store seems to be pushing "organic" products everywhere, even to the exclusion of regular products, which is bad for someone like me who doesn't care for that overpriced stuff. read more

This grocery store is pretty good for the area. The employees seem to go out of there way to get in your way. My biggest gripe against this place is that there is nowhere to leave your shopping cart in the parking lot.
