I'd seriously give this place ZERO stars if I could. I'll never set foot or spend another dollar in a Safeway just solely based on my experiences here. First off, there is an old white lady who is presumably the manager who typically works nights. Let me be clear, she is by far the meanest, rudest person I have ever encountered in a grocery store. She treats her employees like trash, speaks to them very harshly and condescending. I've personally witnessed this atleast a half dozen times, tonight included. I've witnessed as well as experienced first hand her callous attitude towards her customers. She berated a guy for putting an item back into the wrong spot and then proceeded to bash the dude not 5 feet away from him. Unbelievable. Last time I checked, customers aren't employees and don't get paid to restock shelves. I work in the same business and can't even fathom having one of my employees let alone a manager act in this manner. I know it's union and I highly doubt anything will change. But I'd really urge upper management to nip this kinda thing in the bud. There's a Walmart across the street and a Winco a couple miles down the road. Do yourself a favor and go there instead. It's cheaper and the employees are a hell of a lot nicer. I seriously would rather shop at a gas station rather than go here again. read more

I wish there was less than one star for this store. On 11?21 I ordered 24 pieces of fried chicken all legs and thighs for pick up on the 22nd at 1030. When I arrived at the deli they took my bag with my rain check to customer service. I was told by Martha I could not use the rain check because it was issued by another store. I pointed out that no where does it state that on the coupon. She said it was store policy, so I asked to see the policy. She then said I was being rude and as she walked away I asked to speak to a manager. Needless to say no one showed up. I went home and called the store and spoke to Chris (manager?). He apologized but did not offer to come back in for the chicken, nor did he offer to have it delivered. I was left with no food for my party at 2:30 and had to go to Raleys for chicken. This is a quick review of the local Safeway just outside of Reno and off of highway 80. We stopped here to stock our hotel room with breakfast items (Clif bars, yogurts, bananas, and Coffee Mate) to save some dough by not eating out in the morning. What I liked most about this location is my local VONS account works in all Safeways, so we saved a little money while we shopped. Nice. If we lived here I would frequent this location often. Why do I come back when the staff is so rude? There are two cashiers that know about customer service and if they are not on, I usually bag myself. But others have commented on how that is working and how condescending the "watchers" are when the machine freaks out and won't work properly. Today the cashier did not give me my 40 dollars when I checked out. When I came back and she clearly had not marked the receipt, she looked like I was trying to scam her and then did not apologize. The deli counter couldn't have slower people if they dug them up. The wheel broke on the cart on my way out to the parking lot and I had to pick it up like a wheel barrow. What do I like? The signature brands, the bakery and the produce for the most part. I like the product, but the management must be horrible to make everyone so unhappy or to hire so few good customer service people. Bakery: Birthday Party - NO CAKE The cake was left behind the microwave, and no one knew about it. I ordered a Moana themed birthday cake for my daughter's 2nd birthday 3 days prior to attempting to pick it up on June 30th. Once I arrived, the young lady automatically gave me a confused look when I asked for the cake. She then went to the back and looked for it in addition to asking a few workers around her. When she couldn't find it, she told me that I may have mistakenly ordered from the Sparks location, which I knew for a fact that I did not, as I specifically use this location for all custom cake needs. There was not much effort to further look for the cake, contact upper management, or help me with a new one. The manager/supervisor later contacts my husband explaining that the cake had been left behind the microwave, where no one could see it. She then stated how the incident was not okay, but did not provide a solution for the problem of which lies on their end, nor did she call back as she claimed that she would. I have since tried to call back but to no avail. I called Monday and was told that she wouldn't be in until Thursday. I called today (Thursday) and although she is there, am directed to call back in the morning. I still gave 2 stars because I've had great experiences here; however, unless I am able to get through to the manager/supervisor and get this resolved, then I would suggest another bakery in town. read more

This Safeway Store is definitely AWESOME. This is one of my favorite grocery stores located near my house. I love how convenient this store is for me. I can walk in, grab a coffee at Starbucks and begin my shopping. Safeway always seems to have the things that I need and at a moderate price. I am always willing to spend the few dollars extra to avoid places like Walmart and to get a better quality product. There is one lady that works behind the deli counter that really makes going here an enjoyable experience. I feel awful that I do not know her name but she is an older women that always has a positive attitude. This really stands out at this location because although I really like this grocery store, the deli staff is the one place that it really needs improvement. They have great deals on Chinese food and you will always get enough to have left overs for days to come. The cashiers are so helpful and nice. I have even had one help me to figure out alternative ingredients to a recipe that I was attempting, after we failed to locate some odd-ball things. I thought that this was certainly going above and beyond. If you bank with U.S. Bank (I do not) than you are in for a surprise, they have one conveniently in the grocery store. Not my favorite grocery store I've been to in Reno.... I have recently moved here so I have been checking out all my options but we mostly came here to see what they had to take home, dinner wise. We also needed to grab a couple of other things which took forever to find. It just doesn't seem well organized at least in comparison to other grocery stores. Still A-OK (cashiers while checking out were nice, location seems clean), I'm sure if I gave it another shot I'd eventually get used to their layout I just don't have much incentive at this point to do so, not with all the other options of grocery stores around that I've already enjoyed more so than this Safeway. read more

Not enough employees-few checkers and no one to help or assist with bringing groceries out. Sad for such a large chain store.

First, the good. Best bakery of any grocery store in town, and its not close. No other grocery store (excluding Whole Foods) has the variety and quality of baked goods that you'll find at this store. Their bagels, rolls, breads, and cakes are all fantastic. They have a decent selection of stuff as well. They also have the best deli in terms of quality and selection. Fantastic. Nice produce as well. Good selection and quality. Surprisingly, some of their pre-made meals are really good too. Their Chinese feast for 2 for $9.99 is a great bargain and its good food too. Excellent fried rice, general's chicken, and kung pow chicken. Really good. I actually tried some of their sushi as well (they have an in house sushi chef at this spot, which is kinda cool) and it was excellent. Also, this store is super clean. Spotless really. Its easily the best maintained store in Reno outside of Whole Foods. Even better than the NW Reno Raley's at this point. Prices aren't awful--on par with Savemart and a little less than Raleys on most things. Obviously more than Wal-Mart but you don't have the Wal-Mart crowd or stigma to deal with here. Definitely cheaper and far superior than the brutal Scolari's up the block. So why only 4 stars? The service. This place NEVER has more than two checkers open and they are so slow. So so slow. No self checks either, which truly sucks. The deli is usually the same--so very slow, and people will randomly disappear from there, leaving no one to help you. Weird. This store has improved a lot of late, so much so that I've deleted earlier reviews that details problems that were dealt with and have not returned. And heaven help you if you need something at the service desk. Be prepared to wait. For a while! read more

I'm giving 4 stars to be generous because I can't fairly rate this place because I've only shopped there for Instacart a few times but the quality of meat is lacking as is dairy. But I know this is common at most stores right now so I don't want to knock anyone during this time too much. Some of those Instacart trips, I kept getting the same cashier. I love her. She is so kind and genuine. She seems to really care about what your saying and you don't expect that normally. Nice selection of produce and pretty big Market workers are pretty helpful and the deli is very fresh with knowledgeable workers inside there as well a lot about the supermarket is fantastic Safeways done a good job at this location. The store itself is pretty clean the access in and out isn't the easiest with a parking. I personally enjoy shopping here and I think the produce is fresher than the Walmart across the street so I enjoy shopping for my apples here. They have seasonal specials and sometimes you can get a chicken with mashed potatoes and a side during the holiday season with a coupon for 7.99 and that's a good deal as well so Safeway does a lot to keep customers attention with their promotions and they're good about offering specials at the right times. Went into the MaeAnne store to buy a few items. Every item I picked up was incorrectly priced! Milk had 2 different price tags for the same brand, same ski, same size; 1 tag said $1.99 and other tag said $1.79. Went to buy pasta and priced incorrect. Went to buy chicken and the big sign said one price and the little tag had another price, same exact product and price on package was $2.79 per pound and the big sign said sale at another price; once again same product, same sky/upc number. I took pictures of all the tags and the cashier double checked me and honored the right prices. This is not the first time this has happened at this store. Safeway has bad employees and bad business conduct. Back to Raley's! read more

I keep trying to make excuses to not leave this store a bad review, but they're making it difficult. Positives: Clean Always stocked and prices are displayed clearly. Negatives: The staff in the deli seem like they care about socializing more than helping customers that are waiting. More than once the have told me to "hold on a sec" while they finish various tasks that they could come back to. On a visit about a month ago the gentleman working the counter was making fun of another customer, loudly, and when his female coworker advised him that everyone could hear him he laughed and said he didn't care. Never enough lines open at peak times, and the staff openly talks about management and other coworkers that could be helping, but aren't. Today when going to checkout the guy whose line I originally picked sighed and put his head down on his register. We've all been there, but just keep it under wraps while someone is in front of you. I chose the next line over which Omar was at and he didn't say one word or make any eye contact. I hope they can fix whatever is making these people miserable because it's a very nice store. read more

I was at the store at 5 a.m. the time they open. Several employees see me outside. One walks in at 5:02 asking if they opened yet and if I'm an employee. He said they will open in just a minute. Another employee walks over and does something to the door other than open it and walks away. Then a lady yells at me from the other entrance while smoking her cigarette that it will be a few minutes that they had electricians working. I asked how long and she advised that she didn't know a few minutes. I think it was very rude to ignore a customer during open hours and bad business practices to not open on time. read more

The checker we had Ed made no effort to help the lady in front of us. He piled all her bags in the counter looking for someone to put them in her cart. She asked to get help out and didn't go out of his way to find someone. It was icy and snowy outside and she had 2 canes to walk with. When we asked if they had anyone to help her he said his phone is busy. He then stated that he was trying to get the attention of the gentleman in customer service, which I didn't see him making an effort to do so. I went to customer service to ask the guy behind the counter if they could get someone to help her out. He snapped at me that he had no one because they didn't show to work. He also stated that he already told the checkers that. My husband and I turned to our checker and told him we'd help her. No response from him. I feel that if they really cared about there customers that the guy in customer service should have said We don't have anyone but I'll be right there to help her. Just saying. Yeah, this place is ah-ight. Safeway, in general, has pretty good prices and sales for their food, a nice selection of products and consumables, and brings in a better consumer base than Wally World. The 5$ Friday deals are pretty great, and it keeps us coming back. It's great that this location also comes with a gas station, where you can have the satisfaction of redeeming your Gas Rewards almost immediately after earning them. Fantastic! I have a few reservations about the customer service here. In general, I've received just-okay-service. For example, I had cash for the pump, I walk into the store and there is no attendant at the register. I wait for a few seconds to see if anyone comes to aid me. No one showed, so I began looking around, through all of the isles, in the back with the drinks, still no sign of anyone. Slightly annoyed, I walk back outside to see an employee on her smoke break sitting on the nearby tables. I asked her if she knows where the attendant is, cash in my hand, and she replied "Yeah, that's me, but I'm on my break, so you'll have to wait 10 more minutes." Okay thennn... not really knowing what to do, I got back into my car, and waited the silly 10 minutes of my time while this employee took her break without anyone covering for her (which turned into 15 minutes, but who's counting right?!) After I left, I called management about this incident and they assured me it shouldn't have happened, and they would address the employee about it. More about the store itself: Some cashiers seem to avoid bagging for some reason. I used to immediately jump in and help them bag, but I've noticed that if I do it too early, the cashier will just stand there and watch, or check their phone, or talk to the cashier next to them, and don't help.... So, I wait a few minutes, make sure they bag at least two items, before I hop in and give a helping hand. read more

Ordered a birthday cake for a gathering to celebrate a 55th birthday. The birthday celebrant is diabetic but wanted a small piece of cake for a milestone birthday. I ordered chocolate buttercream frosting on chocolate cake with raspberry filling, which is the celebrants favorite cake. When I went to pick it up, the cake had white frosting and who knows what's inside it but it is clearly not as ordered. Although the manager ended up giving me the cake, the birthday celebration was ruined as there was no way to get the cake that was wanted and since it wasn't what was wanted it was pointless for them to eat all that sugar for something that was not as desired. So, the birthday boy will get to sit around watching everyone else eat cake while he has none. That's what you get with union employees. Thanks Safeway. read more

Recently I purchased Mini bundt cakes chocolate flavored at Safeway, Open Nature brand.. My friend was over and we ate them and she bit into hers and there was glass and plastic objects inside the cakes.. I'm putting a warning out there about these Mini Bundt cakes because it could have seriously injured my friend if we had not caught it in time.. If she had swallowed the objects she would have wound up in ER!! I contacted Safeway and the store manager to let them know I gave them The Leftovers and the glass plastic objects that were inside the cake as evidence.. The asked me to fill out an incident report which I did.. I have not heard back from the store in 2 weeks regarding this incident, nor was I reimbursed for the purchase of the mini Bundt cakes. read more

Terrible selection, price and customer service. Safeway fails to stock basic items. Staff generally tries to avoid any sort of interaction with customers and seem quite annoyed by being asked questions like whether or not they stock certain items and where to find them. This place SUCKS. They sell tainted meat and restocking seems to be against their religion. New items are released in other safeways that this safeway can't be bothered to sell. Shelves are always empty, and its EXPENSIVE AS HELL here. If I'm going to be paying $50 to quickly grab 4 things it better grant me immortality or something because otherwise it's just theft. Also the people proctoring the self checkout are rude and try and act like you're stealing. If I wanted to steal i'd like to have more options hunny. read more
