The grocery store is a grocery store; it's fine. The problem is the deli. And it's a recurring problem. They are incapable of making breakfast burritos and sometimes sandwiches are a problem. They're never stocked with the ingredients needed. If you bring the problem to the manager's attention, of course it's going to get back to the deli department and now they're going to look at you like you're the problem. Don't bother going to this deli for anything. Go to McD's or somewhere else. If you need actual deli service, there are other markets in the area (Grocery Outlet, Rosauer's, WinCo Foods, and Safeway both in Moscow, and the Moscow Co-Op). read more

The young girl at the register was really rude when I asked a simple question about how to get alcohol out of the locked shelves. There's a button to press to call someone over but it was located in a weird place. But the person who helped me unlock the cabinet was really nice. I go this safeway regularly and every time I go I always receive exceptional service from the employees. It's not near as crowded as Walmart and the prices are nearly identical if you are a safeway club member. I haven't been in the store in a while. I am always disappointed. Wed before thanksgiving at 10a exactly two checkers on duty. The self checkout machines process at glacial speed and snarky help from Safeway employee who shall remain nameless not appreciated either. I am an old lady and apparently I was faster than the machine--but like a slot machine gave me the aural indicator it had added in my items. Apparently not. No I wasn't trying to steal anything as insinuated. Will I be back--nope. Shop Walmart, Disdmore's or the corner gas. Just not here. read more

They have some good specialty items such as fresh ground peanut butter in various flavors. The have a complete selection of brand name foods that I'm used to seeing at a grocery store. (Why is Uncle Ben's brown rice that isn't the instant kind so difficult to find in the Pullman area?) Be sure to get a Safeway card or use your Vons card if you have one of those, they are the same thing. They have sales that save you a lot of money, but only if you have one of those cards. You can also earn gas rewards that save you 10 cent per gallon for each reward you earn, up to one dollar off per gallon total. If you can get over to Moscow, Winco is much cheaper for some things, and they do have a larger selection of certain items. Be sure to check the expiration date and condition of items before you buy them. I've found items that expired over a month ago still on the shelves, as well as cheeses that have gone moldy before their expiration dates. However, I think this was just a passing problem, as I haven't had that issue latley. As a side note, don't buy Cougar Gold cheese anywhere except Ferdinand's on the WSU campus, as there is a significant markup when you buy it elsewhere. It costs $18 a can at Ferdinand's, and $20-$25 everywhere else, including Safeway. read more

On any given day at any given time, if you go into this Safeway you will run into one of Alli D's relatives. I'm serious. Start dropping my name. People will know it. Not that that has anything to do with the 5 star rating. This is a great grocery store. They have a hot nut bar, a fantastic selection of Cougar Gold cheese, self check-outs, and not one but TWO entrances. Woot! Every time we come home, we stop at this place at least three times: Once to pick up all the stuff Mom forgot to get when she went earlier, once in the middle of our stay when we need more chips/coffee/beer/hot nuts, and a third time to gas up and get trashy magazines for the car ride back to Seattle. And every time we go, it's like a mini family reunion. read more

My daughter who attends WSU became slightly ill recently, visited a local clinic, and was given a prescription for some antibiotics, to which the clinic phoned in the prescription to the Safeway Pharmacy. Our family health insurance is Blue Cross/Blue Shield FEP which I have carried for nearly 25 years, with no problems getting prescriptions at various locations around the country. Upon arrival at the pharmacy, the person behind the counter demanded to see my daughter's "prescription card" from our health insurance carrier, which would contain certain types of specific prescription information they apparently need to begin processing this prescription for reimbursement thru the insurance carrier. She showed them her one and only identification card which includes our Group and Personal ID's with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and then the various 1-800 information numbers associated with the different types of venues providing available health care services. She told them that was the only "card" she had. The servicing person at the pharmacy then abruptly told her that w/o that "prescription card", her phoned-in prescription could not be processed. My daughter tried to provide the 1-800 prescription services number shown on her Blue Cross/Blues Shield ID card for the person to call for info, but that went nowhere. She then called me on her cellphone quite upset and asked me about the "prescription card", to which I responded, that Blue Cross/Blue Shield, in the nearly 25 years that I have been a member, has only provided one singular ID card associated with their insurance services for processing with health care services providers, and which was the one she was carrying. Long story short, the prescription was really needed by her urgently, and so she ended up having to pay the full uninsured price for the prescription. We have traveled all over the country, and when needed, we have been able to utilize our standard Blue Cross/Blue Shield ID card in the northeast, south, and Hawaii, for needed prescriptions at various professional pharmaceutical venues, such as Walgreen's, Rite Aid, CWS, Walmart, etc. Not once have we/I ever been stymied by a so-called needed (and actually fictitious...) "prescription card" for Blue Cross/Blue Shield FEP pharmaceutical reimbursement and coverage. I'm not sure what the Pullman Safeway pharmacy's agenda is, however, the pharmacy appears to be totally incompetent, and completely unprofessional. read more

Something is just really wrong at this store. Just in the last month and a half I have went back or stood in line for over 110$ in mistakes mis rings sale items not being given or double charged Money is tight but enough is enough I've wondered what I have not being given when I was not paying attention Today I was in doing our shopping and I always put the extra disc items at end and point them out. The 30 or 50 off in meat or close out area. Well she scanned a item it double rang and she scan the 50 off it tool one dollar off the 2 items. I pointed out the mistake she just took 3$ off at end not correcting the double charge it was a 7.99 item. I went to the customer service area it was 4 deep. 2 other people had bad receipts for a total of 25$. This is just wrong. Really something needs to be checked here read more

I don't normally shop for groceries on Safeway but I do love their Bakery. On Sept. 21st, I came in to pick up a cake for a co-worker, and I have not even reached the Bakery yet and I was instantly greeted with a smile by a male employee. He was just happy to see me and asked if I needed help right away. I simply said I am fine and went my way to the Bakery. I waited less than a minute and the same male employee was there again asking if he may assist me. I picked up a cake and asked to have something written on it. Again, it's just a cake but this male employee made a difference in my visit that day. Smile, willingness to help and he was just happy to have me come into the store. Aside from that, I do love Safeway's layout of the store, this location looks very clean, well-stocked, and their Bakery sure is unbeatable. Most importantly, Safeway is lucky to have employees like this male employee who value how he treats customers. read more

This is a model example of what Safeways should be! Organized, brightly-lit and nicely-stocked. While I do admit it has been a while since my last visit, it's surprising to see reviews so conflicting with the image in my mind. Perhaps this is because I experienced Pullman BEFORE this 'new' Safeway was installed, and that one was grimy, old, and frankly, pretty depressing. Always well-stocked, clean, and filled with so many different varieties of things. Although they're prices aren't cheap when compared to the Walmart across the street, their produce and meats are always so much fresher! I really like that they have a lot more ethnic food options than Walmart! It's as if whatever food items I can't find at Walmart is already stocked here in Safeway. All of the employees are so nice and helpful, a big factor when choosing the stores that I like to shop regularly at. read more

This Safeway is outstanding, and I've been more than willing to pay a little extra for the vastly superior quality (and more convenient location) they offer. As this is our primary pharmacy, we also rapidly accrue points on our Club Card that make Safeway the cheapest gas in town for us. The bakery offers the best bread in town (with free samples). We can't get enough of their asiago cheese bread. Their deli offers outstanding prices on fresh deli meat (it's cheaper than buying the packaged stuff). For quick meals, we often turn to their salad bar or prepackaged sandwiches, both of which are affordable, offer an excellent variety, and most importantly, taste damned good. Try out this Safeway. They're reasonably priced, just not ridiculously cheap. And you get what you paid for. read more

Safeway is just a real mixed bag. It has fewer people than Walmart and is nicer than Dissmores so I usually come here to shop but sometimes it is tough. Don't bother coming later than 10 PM. They will only have one checker and you'll likely have to ring a bell even to get that person to show up. Doesn't matter how many people are in line, there will be one checker. They often don't keep up on baskets. Sometimes not even on carts. The store is definitely clean and well stocked. Though prices will be significantly more than Walmart. The Pharmacy in Safeway is a mixed bag as well. There are a couple of good people there and a couple of really terrible people working there. For the most part, it being part of Safeway made it convenient enough to go here -- you could shop while you had to wait the 20 minutes or so it takes for them to fill a prescription. Unfortunately, Wen, a pharmacy tech is so bad, that convenience no longer makes it worthwhile to go here. I'll be taking my pharmacy needs elsewhere. read more

I usually go to Safeway for produce or sales items only since their everyday prices are sky high. When you pay attention to the ads, you can get great deals. This has been a pretty standard safeway to me. I love the salad bar and bakery. Produce is beyond significantly better than walmart. Prices are comparable for produce. read more

This store is great. they have lots of selection, my one problem is that every single time i try to get some Safeway Chinese take out, it seems like they're either shut down or not fully open. Most places that you go to eat when they open the entire menu is available, but at this Safeway they just have one or two items ready and the rest you have to wait about an hour. this is the only Safeway i've ever heard of doing it this way. This Safeway has a wonderful selection of produce with fresh fruits and vegetables. The prices for the produce are fairly reasonable. As a vegan, I am very pleased to see several plant based options. The staff is very friendly and helpful with smiles on their faces. My cashier was Cameron and he was super kind and congenial. I love the signs made out of boxes of soda cans within the store that support WSU. I am going to deduct a star because the majority of the produce is not organic. Overall, I rate this store 4/5. I'm so glad that we have a Safeway in Pullman. The produce is always fresh and everything is always clean. The staff is friendly and helpful while the prices are often equal to Walmart and much lower than Dissmores if you compare straight across. Of course Walmart has "great value" but in my experience store brands at Safeway are much more comparable to name brands and eating real food is worth the extra few cents to me. This is a very nice grocery store. I recently moved from the Midwest, and the quality of Safeway is comparable to Hy-Vee. You can get a Safeway discount shopping card, too, free of charge that enables you to shop very affordably. Using this card, you can earn discount points towards gasoline purchases. Within the area of Pullman, the prices are higher than Wal Mart, but appear to be on average lower than IGA. read more

The workers at the deli seem like they don't know what their doing. A worker at the self checkout seemed like she had a problem and gave a customer nearby attitude for asking a simple question. And the Starbucks inside is unorganized and slow. read more

I hate this store. This has to be one of most poorly stocked Safeway's I have ever shopped at. They are always out of something. I have never once been able to shop at this store and get everything on my list. And if school is out good luck! Last time school was out it looked like they hadn't received a single shipment in over two weeks. They ran out of bananas, ground turkey, the majority of the produce, and almost every aisle had huge gaping holes where products should have been. I wouldn't be surprised to go to this store one day and find them out of milk, eggs, and bread, its that bad. Unfortunately, as the only alternative in Pullman is Dissmores, which has ridiculously high prices, I'm stuck doing the majority of my shopping at this joke of store. The only good thing about this store is that it is fairly new so it is still relatively clean and much larger than the Safeway in Moscow. I'm thinking of giving Rosauer's a try or maybe I'll just stop eating.... read more

I am really disappointed that the Pullman Safeway is no longer stocking whole coffee beans that you can buy in bulk from the bins. That seemed to be the cheapest option in town for buying coffee, and now the only option is to buy the MUCH more expensive pre-bagged options in the store. I liked that I was able to buy affordable coffee from Safeway, but now I will have to go back to buying coffee from Wal-Mart, since Safeway got rid of this option for me. It made me incredibly upset to find out the coffee bins were no longer in the store on my last Safeway trip. I also had a really difficult time finding a lot of the other items on my list due to things being moved around/not being stocked during the remodel. read more
