Never any shopping carts. Long lines and rude employees. Everyone who works here looks frazzled.

-Food selection is fine with a nice Deli section-only real reason to shop here -Parking situation is terrible with Safeway sharing the lot with various other stores and the spaces seeming to barely accommodate a small car, but somehow packed with mostly SUVs. I usually end up parking on the other end of the lot towards Office Depot, a good 4 minute walk, but its good to exercise. -Ive shopped here for a while and recently dropped a jar of Salsa on the pavement outside the store, and asked if i could get a replacement but received none and not really good service. If you are in Millbrae, I have much better luck at the Albertsons or the Lunardis in Bgame -Lines are usually packed deep and not enough registers are open, there is not an option for self check-out read more

nevermind. all I taste in these cookies are weird preservativey-ness now. maybe it depends on when they baked them? note: their oatmeal raisin walnut cookies have more sugar than their sugar cookies. hmm. still, i like this safeway. carries most everything i need for late night munchies. not as cheap as other healthy alternatives, but not as bad as some 24 hr drive through. read more

I'm not usually a fan of Safeway. Maybe it's from the very bad experience I had ten years ago ... I almost got into a brawl with some middle aged but very mean lady ten years ago. No joke, I was waiting at the deli and because they didn't have a number system, she jumps ahead of me when it's time for the next customer. I stuck up for myself but the lady had a friend and they both ganged up on me. And the deli person did nothing. Sad to say, I think they STILL don't have a number system in the stores. But I digress. This one already scores cool points for being very close to a Trader Joe's (so if you can't find something in one, you can go to another without driving!) and just across the street from a Starbucks. Parking is very easy and I find they stock most things that I need. Not all, but most. The employees are also helpful whenever I have questions. And if they don't understand me due to language barrier, I've experienced that he/she will try to find me and connect me to someone that will understand me better. I like that. Love this Safeway. Much better than what it was, before it took over the Rite Aid space. It's bigger and better and cleaner and more chic. Can a Safeway be chic? Stepping inside is like stepping inside a Whole Foods but a grander less expensive one. They have a lot of specialty items that you'd have to get at other places, but now you can do one stop shopping! There are fresh food bars like the bakery and sushi and deli/sandwich bar. Additionally they have a Starbucks and Jamba Juice bar inside with seats to sip and relax in, as you sip your cool beverage. They even provide sani-wipes to disinfect your shopping cart! The only thing about this place is the parking. I think the layout of the parking lot could be better. I think everyone and their momma shop at this place so the lot can get crowded, but it's not too bad to park further away and just walk. read more

Being new to Palo Alto, I needed to find a grocer that not only was in a convenient location, but one that also had decent prices. Safeway has everything you need under one roof. They have a great meat and seafood selection, as well as a nice assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables. They even have a bulk spice section which is convenient. The prices are a little higher than your basic grocery store, but they have fresh products including a hot bar at the front by the entrance. If you are looking for something of the alcoholic variety, you will be in heaven here. The liquor section takes up about a quarter of the store. Three stars. read more

In a world full of Safeways, this Safeway is king. Recently remodeled, friendly staff, clean and well-stocked... it's great. Also there is a WARM NUT BAR. I will now pause for you to insert your own warm nut bar joke here. Ready? Okay. Seriously, walk past the warm nut bar, look interested, and ask for a sample. They'll give you like, 10 samples. Make sure that at least 5 of those samples involve cinnamon vanilla macadamia nuts. Repeat daily. read more

What a funny little experience here. It's on the second level above the parking garage. So, you have to escalater a shopping cart up to shop. I had to pay the same amount for a quart of cottage cheese as for 5 lbs at Smart & Final. really? Clerk sent me to the wrong aisle. Maybe I would by more, right? UGHH I don't really like this Safeway. Super cramped parking lot, and expired cheese, GOODIE. I didn't realized until after eating my package of cheese that it expired in January of this year, IT'S MARCH NOW. There were 2 packages of Pepper Jack and Colbat cheese?, so I bought one. Ughh, I can't believe they're selling cheese that was best before Jan 19, 2009. Whatever, maybe I'll return it, but I think I'm too lazy to. They just ruined my fav cheese, PEPPER JACK, UGHH WHATEVER. At least they had the Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice I wanted, I didn't even check if that was expired or not. Cranberry juice is another fav of mine, I hope they didn't ruin it for me. read more

They only have one person manning sandwiches, deli, and hot foods. Usually that person will be tied up at the deli cuz people love ordering several cuts of meats. The cashiers are slow and they never have enough to support the amount of people in line. Also they'll run out of shopping carts cuz the ones outside need to be ferried upstairs. read more

There are few chain grocery stores with locations that are real standouts, but this Safeway is the exception to the rule. Several times while on my quest for cat food, dog treats, granola bars, cheddar cheese, Diet Coke, canned black beans, ears of corn and lox (a random grocery list, I know), various Safeway employees paused to ask me if I was finding everything OK and to wish me a nice day, and one woman in particular was so very friendly when I asked her where a few items were that I had trouble finding and had an unparalleled eagerness to show me where to find them. (When doing lunch break grocery runs, I normally don't shop at this Safeway...I usually go to, in Stanford speak, "the secret Safeway" off Sand Hill.) I remember the days when this Safeway looked like something out of a horror movie, complete with dim lighting, sad tile floor yellowed with age and a big section that resembled a warehouse. I was expecting a zombie to be thumping melons in the produce section or a nutjob with a chainsaw to jump out from one of the freezers. But, now it's shiny and new and utterly fabulous. Today 08/09 my family and I were at the Safeway Millbrae store to buy my daughter a bottle of Tylenol. When we were at the self check out kiosk, the machine was indicating that it needed further assistance from team members, so we patiently waited as a Safeway employee (Jean) was helping another customer next to us. When Jean came over, she sounded irritated "YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BUY TYLENOL AT SELF CHECKOUT!" I replied " I didn't know we were not supposed to." She raised her voice " I AM TELLING YOU, THIS IS WHY YOU'RE HAVING A PROBLEM!" I said "okay, but it had already taken our money." Her voice got louder again and replied impatiently "WHO PAID!?" At that point I've lost my temper and I raised my voice as well and said "WE DID! Why does it matter who paid?" She said "YOUR AGE!" I said "34!" She raised her voice again and said " YOUR AGE!" I replied "34!" she said " THE YEAR!!" Then I replied with my birth year. Why didn't she just asked for the year in the first place? What did we do wrong to be treated like we had done something horribly wrong?!!? There is no reason to be so rude to a paying customer. Is this the type of customer service Jean wants to provide as a manager at Safeway ? If a manager is supposed to lead by example, how will other staff members treat your customers? read more

Open twenty-four hours. And BIG. Those are the draws of this particular grocery store outlet. At some point in the recent past Safeway swallowed up the next-door RiteAid, so now the entire huge surface parking lot (and the underground lot) are all devoted just to this humongous Safeway experience. The aisles were all widened and new products were introduced, which means that there are large sections devoted to organic, kosher, asian, and hispanic food products. The beer and wine selection is huge, the bakery makes cakes, there are entire aisles devoted to dog food, sometimes lawn furniture is offered for sale near the pharmacy - you get the picture. It's a one-stop shopping spot that's even open at 3 am. Prices on non-sale items aren't usually as good as at TJs, but the selection is huge. Update 2/6/07: Well, most of the parking lot off of El Camino is still fenced off, but hopefully this will be done soon. The more frustrating thing is that the extra space from the pharmacy got closed off and all the stuff got squished into the original Safeway space. Narrow aisles do not a happy shopper make. I had to go on an expedition to find my Gatorade in the bread aisle! That aisle barely fit people, let alone carts. Bleck. While this may be part of a complex strategy to convince Safeway shoppers to limit themselves to a normal weight/size, most of us are normal sized already in this neighborhood. read more

I remember the grand opening of this Safeway - it was like a major event for me and my bf (we love grocery shopping). Parking was horrendous but being there on the first day was worth the trouble. The aisles were spotless and filled to the brim with products - all perfectly aligned. It was amazing. The Safeway is no longer spotless, but it's still a lot nicer than the old style Safeways. And it's awesome that it's open 24/7. The prepared items at Safeway aren't so tasty so I usually get those at Wholefoods or Andronicos. It's fine for general groceries. If I want more interesting/better cuts of meat I go to Andronicos and Wholefoods. For better fruit I like Sigonas (Andronicos and Wholefoods are great too). Safeway is good for items with standardized quality (like haagen daas) or items were quality isn't that important (like onions or celery or potatoes.) read more

I love this Safeway. First of all, their hot food selection is great, which is awesome for a quick and easy lunch. It's also big enough that there's minimal wait time in lines, plenty of selection for general groceries, and a very helpful staff for those doing self-checkout. If I lived around the area, I'd definitely use this as my go-to place to buy any sort of groceries. Only downside is the parking lot is kind of awkwardly positioned, as many supermarket lots are. It's not terrible, but it's not ideal either. read more

This is my new closest Safeway now and while I still dislike Safeway for it's not so good selection, this one is a step up from my previous one. There is a nice bulk food section with trail mix and dried foods sold by the lb. Another plus is that it seems to be open late too. I mean not just the 24 hour aspect, but I saw their deli section open past 9 the other day. That would not be the case at my old location. I find more friendly people here too. I know it's safeway but I feel my comfortable at this one for some reason. read more

Today my husband and I shopped at this Safeway location. I have to say this store beats the Safeway located in San Francisco near Paris Street. Well kept maintained store very organized and easy to find products. My husband bought the fresh Cod fillets great price and looks yummy! :) Great indoor parking makes it great esp. When it rains hard. Will be shopping here more often when in Milbrae :) read more

This Safeway has a better wine selection than most wine stores, and the prices are really good. Often they have 30% off the prices charged by the wineries themselves. It is much better than the Safeway at San Antonio shopping center. The produce section is pretty large and they often have sales on popular items. read more

Safeway just made a useless app to waste time to get "extra" discounts on products. I see the reviews on the app are at 1 whole star because it's complicated and wastes time. Fortunately, Tee, the awesome cashier, helped me figure out how to use it even though Safeway employees haven't even been trained to use it yet (Safeway, get it together...) I appreciated her going the extra mile to get me my savings since I went through the trouble of downloading and registering the app. Overall, it seems like a nice Safeway. Good flowers. For my grocery needs (stay at home mom who tries to get it done in one shot), this is the best store to do it. So much better than the one in Palo Alto. Plus, there are shopping carts with red and yellow cars attached for your children to ride in! For anyone who has shopped with toddlers, these reduce the stress by 9 fold. Yes, you may not find the one item you need from Whole Foods or the novelty item from Trader Joe's. But you'd be crazy to shop for a family of four at Whole Foods unless you want to spend a gazillion dollars (kudos to you if you have a gazillion dollars) and it's really hard to get all the basics at Trader Joe's. The one bad thing about this Safeway though, is that the Strawberries always seem to go bad in a day. Very strange. read more

This Safeway used to be bigger until they remodeled; however, the remodel made the space so much more useable. It's got a hot deli counter, gelato, sushi chefs, fresh bakery, Starbucks, Jamba Juice - as well as all the usuals you'd expect from a Safeway. And it's got a self-checkout! Which I sadly don't see at that many stores. The bakery is okay. It's awesome for grocery store baked good, average compared against just bakeries. They've got a whole foods type area, which I raid all the time. The staff is pretty friendly as well. Of course, you do have to deal with the idiotic club cards there, as well as the fact that you can get a lot of these items cheaper elsewhere. But for convenience (grocery shopping at lunch when I need things that Trader Joe's lacks), this place is pretty darn good. read more

This is a very clean/organized and safe store to shop at while travelling. Down south we have Vons or Pavillions which is owned by Safeway so we felt right at home when we were here. I love how clean and neat everything was. We got a chance to buy some healthy drinks (smoothies) and coconut water and get some other snacks for our trip as well. read more

This was today and I was leaving and me and my sisters didn't know we couldn't have the water bottles at the bottom of the cart and put it on the escalator and then it stopped working. At this point, we were really embarrassed and felt very bad that we were holding it up. They had to call the manager and one of the employees was mad about it even though we didn't know we couldn't put the water bottle there but 3 other workers helped out and were very nice about the situation. 3.5 stars I've had good experience with this place when I came here. And what the heck? Over 100 reviews! Wow. Well, anyways, some customers say that it's perfect, and not perfect. So I'll just be in the middle of the fighting. Yeah, it's good, and not actaully good, but I would think it's sort of not good. Well, ive been reading the comments, and they said they don't have good customer service. WELL I AGREE. yeah, most of them say bad words to their staff friends. So I'll change it to 2.5 stars. But, mostly three so I would change it to 3 stars. I like thier foods, but, thier customer service is TERRIBLE. I think that's all I have to say! P.S. you should try target. The new HUGE Safeway is opening this week! Let's PRAY it is 1000 times better than the old nasty one. I haven't gone to the old one since I got fish there months ago. There were TWO black hairs in my overpriced halibut! Now that there is an entirely new store, I hope they will be much pickier about every aspect of the store including produce and meat and fish. UPDATE: November 30, 2007 They just opened the new 65,000 square foot store. It has everything you could ever want. Beautiful. But the people they have working there are imbeciles. This store is a disgrace. They are always out of sale items, never have the 50% markdown tags on the discounted items on the racks. The deli is awful, never can find someone to help you, always out of sale items and workers getting the orders wrong numerous times. Today was the last straw. I went earlier in the morning to the other store and they did not have the correct price on the $5 Friday item. I did not notice until I got home. I went to this store on my way home from work, bringing my receipt and ad to show them my purchase at the wrong price. The rude and always stressed-out worker said, "can't help you because you didn't bring the item in". What? it was clear on the receipt with time stamp on it and with the add.
