Not a pleasant way to start your morning. Early morning weekends (7am or so) it's rather chaotic. There doesn't seem to be any management. One open checkout is the best they can do. I have multiple quarls that have turned into stressors with Safeway. I've had constant issues with the app. One of my biggest issues & time consuming endeavors was with my Safeway card in 2025. I would scan my Safeway card, nothing would happen & the cashier would have to reset the screen. Checker after checker nobody knew why for months. I'd be waiting there a min. of my life. I literally broke down on one knee with my hands in the air & said I don't know what the problem is. A bagger explained that everything's electronic now so my Safeway card won't work anymore. I discarded it, ever since, I've had to press my phone number into the screen taking up time & exposing myself to germs. At the self-checkout the automated voice asked you to scan your card, geez! On 5/19/25 I get Pre-Made market food at 15:00, when I got home 5-min away. The chicken was rock hard. In 2025 I bought a 12-in package of salami which was a little less expensive than the pre-cut one. Next to it I was charged an even higher price and they the regional manager rep I showed a picture of the display said that this shouldn't even be set up like this virtually knowing I got ripped off from the receipts and picture. In the fall of 2025 I passed by the manager's special rack & got a can of super hot chicken noodle soup. I was shocked that I was charged $8 on a can of soup 50% off. There's an amount of checkers they have that's an issue and buying alcohol I have to wait. I've had multiple issues with buying alcohol & the "ever-changing sales" attached to them. One of the receipts in my picture is regarding a charge for the buy one get one discount. You can tell from the timestamp it was nearing midnight which, means a minimal crew working. I don't like to hold up my fellow patrons or wait anywhere anymore to rectify purchase issues. I tend to want to get in & get out. There is only one item available so I ended up getting charged full price. The day after Thanksgiving I had a hangover & looking for replishment I forget to sign in to get the sale & ended up getting charged $5.49 for a $3.49 on sale orange juice. This is technically my fault, but it goes to show that it's leaving the shopping exp. confusing, time consuming where every shopping exp. we have to stop in the middle of every other product or aisle in order to pull out our phones or might look like one of these mindless sheep where we're constantly looking down on our phone, whether it's on the road or in the grocery store scrolling through pictures & hitting tabs to open up pages. It's dangerous & unnecessary. I've bought the Safeway select ranch for over a decade. I sometimes buy extra. On my B-day as part of a promo I bought 2 extra ones & got stuck with 2 expired ones when in need. This is the first time this has happened with any product & I believe somehow I got sold some soon-to-be expired ranch I wasn't expecting. I spoke with someone who used to be the manager of the Burlingame store and is now so regional manager in Sac. On the over 20-min call I went over all of my issues while sending her pictures so she had everything she needed. At the end she tried to tell me that I could always go up to the service desk to get my refunds if I had any issues and I told her at almost 40 years old I'm tired of wasting my time in that line or waiting for someone to come to that area and go through that process of getting my money back. And I was here writing this complaint in order to get a solution & which I wanted $200 in compensation. She didn't ever contact me afterwards. After rejecting Safeway's response they forwarding my complaint to Sedgwic. I continued to email the POC with current Up-To-Date issues at the same location that had had ripped me off & inconvenienced me, but no reply. Then on 2/./26 I got a call from the rep. with Sedgwick who is a 1/5 star Co. Who deals Workers compensation claims. I've actually dealt with them with such a claim years ago & they're very unprofessional/shady. He told me he only knew of one of my issues & if I had other issues they'd be different claims. It seemed tedious/time-consuming so I didn't proceed with my complaint. This just shows that they don't care maybe because they're mostly still a monopoly in certain areas. read more

The Burlingame Safeway remodel includes in the bakery section, a brand new bread slicer! Toss whatever uncut loaf you need to inside the automatic slicing machine. A few seconds later, your loaf comes out perfectly. Sliced and ready to re-bag. Really like what they did with the new Safeway remodel at this location in several different areas. The bread slicer is one of them. Of course. The remodel of the alcohol section with a new wine cooler is also fantastic. And generally the store looks much neater and cleaner and updated. Good stuff, good deals! This is a good, safe location with plenty of parking. Pro tip: there is more parking upstairs. This location is a bit bigger, and so they might have more in stock to choose from. For example, they had two or three large sections just for the large bags of navel oranges that were on sale and in season. There are plenty of food options around in the near vicinity. So once you're done with your grocery needs, there is lunch or dinner that could be picked up quickly. read more

When I got there at 10 am, the whole sushi section was empty -- it had not been made yet, but they were prepping. I asked how long it would take before the Sushi was out and they asked me what I wanted and made it for me right there on the spot. Now that is good Customer service! You know, good ol Safeway. Burlingame's safe so this safeway feels quite safe too. Grocery's always pretty reliable here. BUT okay their cream puffs. I just had to write this review to SHOUTOUT TO THE BAKERY DEPARTMENT! Their creampuffs -- quite delicious. Filled to the max with whipped cream. These cream puffs, even at 3.99, they are massive. It feels like you're holding a bigmac. This is a great feeling. Shells aren't like super crispy, we're not expecting that here since it's prob been sitting in a plastic tub for a few hours. But like man, this is still better than other cream puffs like mustache papa or something. I've also gotten the same cream puffs at the Millbrae Safeway, but their cream was like lemony. No good. Today was the last time I will purchase Organics Baby Spinach in the 16oz. plastic container from a Safeway store . The contents are not fit for human consumption. And although the best buy date was weeks out, 95% of it was rotting and decaying. The packaging was full of condensation, and likely exposed to varying temperatures in route to the refrigeration case. I visited the Safeway on Howard Ave during the day and had one of the most frustrating customer service experiences. I waited nearly six minutes at the counter, and not a single employee acknowledged me. Multiple staff members walked right past as several employees were helping the same customer, but no one even said "hello" or "I'll be with you in a moment." Finally, I had to speak up and say, "Hello, is there anybody available to help me?" Only then did someone apologize and ask how they could assist. When I asked for the service I needed, I was told the person responsible was on lunch. What upset me the most wasn't the wait -- it was being completely disregarded. I had just finished a 1 a.m.-9 a.m. shift and was exhausted, trying to take care of business before heading to rest. To stand there invisible, with not even a glance or acknowledgment, felt unprofessional and disrespectful. I frequent this Safeway at night and usually the service is top-tier: friendly, attentive, and never this crowded or dismissive. But daytime service is a different story. Customers deserve at least basic courtesy -- a simple "I'll be right with you" goes a long way. This experience left me feeling frustrated, overlooked, and like my time didn't matter. I hope management addresses this lack of customer care during the day shift. read more

This morning, I came to purchase flowers for a birthday surprise, and when I walked in, I didn't see much options available for flowers that were to my liking. I saw Shaista (Checker) who assisted me in finding flowers that were out of my sight in a beautiful glass section which I did I not even notice before I left to another location. I ended up getting flowers that were incredibly beautiful. She even made me feel better by complimenting me that I've made the right decision. Shaista was also kind enough to look after my items for me while I went to the inside Starbucks to get a drink. When I had returned, she got me a cart, placed my flowers, my ballon, and my cat food inside as well. I was so extremely blown away by her Customer Service level. Not only did she make my day by going above and beyond for me, but she unexpectedly did something I've never had done for me before by any other Safeway employees. I would give 0 stars if I could. Beware, this store sells you expired food products, I wish I checked the other reviews beforehand. Sold me steak that expired on December 18th, and I bought the item on the 5th of January. Customer service is horrible, instead of management taking responsibility and providing solutions, they instead give you a lot of attitude. There was no apology or a mention of we'll make sure to check items in the future. Avoid at all costs. It's safeway what more do you need we all have to shop for groceries I always find what I need at this Safeway easy to shop aisles are wide enough for shoppers to walk up and down the aisles. While some shoppers browse the aisles you can still pass by without having to say excuse me to get by. Parking is tight here because it is shared with other businesses and it seems the spaces are real close to each other it is a tight fit. The cashiers are always working hard to get the shoppers in and out but it does seem to take a bit longer here than other Safeway's maybe due to mostly everyone has a full cart here I still prefer this Safeway over the ones closer to my house read more

First the restaurants automatically charge a tip, then ask you for another tip. Now Safeway members are duped. I have been a member for decades. You used to input your phone number at check out and receive the discounted "member" price. Then Safeway added clip coupons to their paper ads. You have to produce the clipped paper coupon at check out to get the discounted price. Now, Safeway requires you to download their app, and I guess show your phone at check out to get the posted advertised price in the store. I have been duped more than once. I see the sale price sign in the store, next to the item. I have never read "digital coupon price only". I have checked out using my member number, only to find out that I have paid $2.00 or more per item on my receipt when I get home. I opened it and the date was 29 August 2023 so 11 month already expired and they sold it in the fridge . God know what else they are selling which is expired . I had other shopping to do so I was going to take the tenders and check them out with my other items before she said can you pay here? Sure I can. But customer service is lacking here especially when I speak English, and she assumed something different that reality. This little old lady needs to go back to class and learn appropriate customer service skills. The young man next to her was even shocked and he is probably 40 years younger. He was kind. A few cashiers at this Safeway have a negative and condescending attitude. To be fair, not everyone behaves this way, but the few people who are condescending is the reason for the poor review. I usually try to visit an establishment at least three or four times before providing feedback. The prices are not too bad; you should watch out for deals! If you go in the early morning, it's much easier to find parking and avoid large crowds. Also, try to avoid the cashier named "Cynthia" - she has a really bad attitude and needs to look for another job! She appears to be very unhappy, sarcastic and makes the experience for visiting customers awful. Today we picked up an order for a one-year-old birthday party and it was two hours delayed since they forgot about our order. We spoke to the manager, and the only accommodation they could do was giving us one tray, free and giving us a small gift card. I think Safeway could have done a better job however the food assistant named Jovanna was super helpful and very empathetic to our situation and felt very bad and was overly apologetic. She did a wonderful job at preparing the trays and ensuring that we got our order correct. I'll be back to Safeway because of her. Thank you, Joanna. We greatly appreciate your efforts. I was hesitant to write this review but after MULTIPLE visits with the same experience I have no choice. I can count on one hand the employees here who have been nice and we had one thing in common: we all had darker skin. God forbid you go to the deli and want to order a sandwich from Natalie or a few other whose names I wasn't able to get. I went up to the deli counter today to order my sandwich and was greeted with dirty looks and no words. I was going to leave, but went back and asked if anyone could help me since I was being patient since her hands were busy trying hard to ignore my existence. She quickly told me someone else would help me and ran away, but not before glaring at me a few more times. I understand a lot of people might not like their job, but it doesn't cost anything to be nice to everyone. I hate this Safeway location and I despise the feeling I get after leaving here because the employees embody a lot of the problems in our world today. I sure hope you'd choose your employees to be more well rounded and not selective as to who should get better treatment. The store is conveniently located, and offers ample parking. You will pay a lot for groceries here, well anywhere, but especially here. For your money you will be rudely treated by nearly every employee that you encounter. This is the store where all the malcontents work. The floor supervisor, about an hour ago was/is amazing. She made sure i got the discount on cheese as the App was not working. i 1st saw her as the Safeway App wasn't downloading [compared to the Walmart App I accidentally downloaded. Then when the app wouldn't register the store location, i sought her, not to be found. Next she found me lusting over ice cream aisle. Finally, i spent only $5.97 for 24 oz of cheese, but that is $3 cheaper than I would have paid, ass the App was faulty, without her intervention. What a positive impression! read more
