All the businesses on the east side of the 101 in Mill Valley need to band together and get the city or the county or Caltrans to come up with better freeway exit signs. Have you ever tried to get to the In-N-Out when you're coming southbound? I have, many times, and although I know the way, I still get lost. And getting back on the freeway afterward is an even bigger adventure. I think going northbound is what it's all about. I felt embarrassed to be eating out by myself on a Saturday night, but then I looked around, and no one was paying attention to me, because I'm way too old to be worried about this crap--kids ten years younger than me are way too old to be worried about this stuff, and if they were worried about this stuff in high school, then they might have 10-year-olds of their own running around. But I forgot, sorry, the teen birthrate is down. Or so I'm told. But in addition to my grilled cheese animal style, I wanted something to drink and something for the next day(s), so I came to the Safeway, and you know what? It's great. Er, good. It's better than the one in Corte Madera. The employees are nicer, even on a Saturday night when some guy is sweating them about a nickel. I gave him a dime, and he tried to give me back the nickel he got in change. Are you serious, son? You can keep the damn change. The parking lot is a total this-is-where-I-learned-how-to-drive-late-at-night-with-my-dad-when-I-was-fifteen deal, and heaven knows the Mariners of the world need to know how to drive before they wreck the brand new BMW daddy bought them for their sixteenth birthday. Ive been to my fair share of safeways and most of them have pretty similar layouts. This was not the case here. I found myself wandering all over to find what i needed. There were only 2 checkstands open and the lines were long. The man at the register was nice and rang quickly. I didnt find a lot of what i needed but its better than the nugget by my house. Safeway always has good deals too if you use your club card. read more

I've only been visiting this Safeway for a few weeks but am quite happy with the experience across the board. The Great: + Fantastic selection of fresh baked bread from local merchants. + Great prices on Wine + Friendly staff + Nice selection of Organic fruits and veggies + Lotto, Red Box, and Recycling machines + There is a Chevron station just down the road where you can use your Safeway points to get a 10c/gal discount. The Average: o Typical meat and seafood departments o Standard grocery selection The Poor: - The self-checkout area can be frustrating. You'd think people would know how to use these machines by now, but apparently not. Combine that with an overwhelmed employee trying to help 6 people at once? I would give 2.5 stars if I could but I rounded up because it's the closest thing we have to a normal supermarket with normal prices around here. Pros: As I said, prices here aren't outrageous most of the time. They have some good sales and a pretty decent selection. I love their "O" organics line - comparable to Whole Food's 365 brand and I like that you can get that as well as "conventional" stuff under the same roof. Cons: Whoever is doing their purchasing needs to go. They constantly run out of things and in fact, my experience yesterday prompted me to write this review. Three days before Thanksgiving they were totally out of pie crusts (none at all. No fresh, no frozen), vegetable broth and Knorr vegetable soup mix. Also the self checkout lane is ridiculous. Every time I use it I end up having a problem with either the scale, the bagging area or the coupon drop. Last but not least, I have seen expired items on the shelves. read more

I love the sandwiches they offer. I used to frequent this place 10 years ago when I lived here and I must say they've definitely gotten WAY BUSIER!! Every time I go to this place there's at least 2 people in line waiting to order a sandwich. $5.49 on sale or $5.99 everyday for a sandwich that I can eat over the period of 2 meals. $5 subway footlong?!? NO WAY. The meats, cheese selection, bread selection are next to none. You will not find a better sandwich for $6 bucks. read more

If you need any assistance because you are older or have trouble walking due to an injury, forget going to this Strawberry Safeway. No one available or willing to help you to get a cart if you use up the room in your basket. Stood at the pharmacy for 10 minutes waiting for a cart I requested to help me take my items up front to those registers and it never showed up. The manager was not even in the store when I went to let him know that the pharmacy staff would not ring up any of my items (can of peanuts, packaged burgers, "by the each" veggies, nothing that needed weighing) or even give me a basket to lug them to front registers. Never had issues such as this at Whole Foods or Sprouts or Mollies! Sad situation for seniors - and going to be moving my prescriptions. read more

As bad of a rap as Safeway gets, Will the assistant manager gets my 5 stars for customer service. The payment system went down and I had shopped at Corte madera with little help from them. He called them to walk them through what to do and followed up with me. I will say that Shari and Catherine tried helping in CM however Safeway leaves their staff undertrained and helpless when there are issues needing resolution which makes them suck and deserve the crappy reviews they get. Even though this location is further from my home than the one on Camino Alto, I come to this store because they actually understand customer service. Unlike the other Mill Valley Safeway, this store does their best to make sure the check stands are properly staffed for the number of customers in the store. Certainly there are times when you have to wait your turn, but it won't be because only two check stands are open. Beyond that, the store is fine. Nothing really special. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but certainly better than Corte Madera. read more

Horrible experience at this Safeway. Cashiers not knowing how to take payments, throw your receipts away as soon as they print, messed up the drinks and sandwiches, flies all over the open deserts . . . Don't Shop here. The cashier and barista at Starbucks, "Lisa", ran and cancelled my Starbucks card transaction several times and then rang my purchase as cash and lied saying she used my card. Stripped me of Gas Points, Starbucks Points, and Monopoly Pieces (Also lied and said Starbucks at Safeway doesn't count for game pieces... NOT TRUE, get them at my Safeway Starbucks all month). Barista Lisa also took the order for classic sweetener in one and extra carmel in the other, charged us for them, and NEVER put them in (Drinks tasted horrible). Barista Lisa immediately grabbed my receipt as printing, crushed it, and threw it away in front of me (Never even asked if I needed my receipt). Desert case was full of flies crawling on the frosting pops and breads. Gross. Deli worker, "Lourdes", put spicy hot sauce on one sandwich without us asking or telling us and saying we were getting bbq sauce (Can not eat), on other sandwich burned bacon to black with smoke and put on sandwich anyway (Choked down half). Men's bathroom had NO lid covers and sticky floor with lots of strong urine smell and mold, very nasty. This business is doing a very poor job and not worth going to. We stopped on way back from the hospital to energize up for another 90 miles and feel like we never should have come here. Not coming back. (P.S. I've been in grocery stores all over the world. This place was the slowest ever. I honestly think they are pumping in something through the air. The cashier I had talked to a friend about how hungover he was. The cashier in the express lane never learned the word express, that's for sure. No sign of management or customer service anywhere and lines 8-10 deep. All the guy at the self check out could do is yell at people who didn't realize they couldn't bring their wine through. The bakery really came through on 2 kids birthday cakes on the day of. I had left it too late to order the day before and customer service recommended I call or come in early in the morning to speak directly to the bakers staff. That worked out really well, and Jesus was really helpful with some small customizations to the 2 cakes. Safeways bakeries, in general, are a great hack for kids birthday cakes (especially cupcake cakes). The one thing to be ware of is coming in around a holiday, when lines could be from the front to the back of the store, but on a day-to-day basis, it's a good place to stop in if you're not looking for the specialty, boutique grocery experience. read more

Once again let down by having purchased expired food. This time it was NY Style Sausage. Purchased on Sunday and did not notice it was expired, by a week. We missed it, so we won't go back for a credit, but this happened before, which is very frustrating. read more

But they never have enough staff, you almost always have to wait 45 minutes to check out, terrible customer service, horrible bag packing, and produce is often old. If you like bagging your own groceries and staff that are as unpleasant as they are unhelpful, this is your place. To be fair I would say half of the staff are unpleasant and the other half are overly nice. There is no in-between. Food selection is good and they have self-checkout, which I like when I am only picking up a few things. Thank goodness for self-checkout (when it is open). Unfortunately, I go early in the morning or late at night due to work schedule. During those times the self-checkout is unavailable. When I have more than a few groceries I use the regular check-out. There seems to be no baggers during the hours that I go. When I have gone during "normal" hours there is usually one bagger for 3 or 4 check-out stands. When a cashier doesn't have a bagger they look at you like, "Why aren't you bagging your groceries?" This place is more like Food for Less in that respect. I really like this Safeway. I notice a lot of people giving poor, even 1-star ratings due to a singular, relatively minor, complaint, which rather unhelpfully skews the overall ranking of the store. Compared to the Safeway at Red Hill Center in San Anselmo, this place is heaven. It's large and well-stocked, and I've never experienced long checkout lines, though I'm sure it can happen at times as is the case anywhere. I actually patronize several grocery stores, some for special items or when I just don't feel like going to a large store. But for general purpose restocking of my kitchen, this is my go-to place. read more

The bathrooms are hideous! Please hire someone to actually clean them. I couldn't even go in. Floors all wet and the grime is really bad.

I come here regularly and the staff is always nice and helpful but there are never enough checkers, and always long lines while staff walk around the store. The self check out also isn't open mornings which makes lines even worse. If the store employed more checkers or had an "I see three" policy it would be much better. read more

One star for horrible customer service from checker Melvin. His demeanor at the check stand just made everyone in line watching him uncomfortable. Every time I walk into any Safeway, I expect to wait in line about 15-20 minutes. There are never enough cashiers in the check out lines & generally they aren't very happy to be there. The produce is fair at best. The store, overall- corporate-wide- needs a huge face lift. I've voiced my concerns to management several times and the common theme in the responses is "it's all union". I'd rather pay more money at Whole Foods to get quality service, amazing produce and a clean, cheery environment! :) read more

Positives: I have never had an issue with the employees-seem very friendly. Very close to where I live. Okay pricing(use J4U for more deals on APP.) They carry items like Straus milk and other organic items. There's a lovely nut and grain display. Negatives: Parking. It's HORRIBLE. Car has been hit twice by people simply not paying attention but then again it's very congested. (This isn't really Safeways fault but whoever designed this parking lot works for Satan) I have to make sure I check the expiration date on dairy as I have bought expired milk before however I have taken it back to the store and had it replaced with no problems. Trying to not use the plastic bags, I put my produce in the front part of the shopping cart. After I checked out I looked at the area where my produce was. The same place a child would sit. There appeared to be smeared poo on the cart. I was disgusted! I mustered up the courage to tell the check out girl. She said, oh yeah I've seen them look worse than that. I really dislike this Safeway. It has a convenient location right off 101 and the bathrooms are clean, but otherwise it doesn't have much going for it. They seem to be consistently out of many items, they're still selling valentine's day stuff in April (admittedly on sale... but only for 50% off...but I guess no one wants it anyway), and the sell severely dented cans for 50% off as well, which seems unsafe. Also, they're very strict about charging a nickel per paper bag. I like the effort to use fewer bags, but they end up overloading the bag to use fewer of them - but, if the bags BREAK, you'll have to use more in the end. Also, I agree that there are oddly no cart returns. ugh. read more

My previous post about 1 person in the deli department at dinner time shopping has become the pattern. I brushed it off when it happened again but tonight at about 6pm poor Cassie was the only person in deli to help customers. I had to wait in the deli line for maybe 10 minutes when another person got in line. Cassie finished with the original customer and I said "Cassie are you alone?" She nodded . There was someone putting out the roasted chickens but no one to help Cassie. Other people arrived looking for their dinner as she prepared my sandwiches. She did a good job just like Tatiana in first post. Safeway managers you're going to force me and maybe others as I know the understaffing is a fact, to go to Nugget in Tiburon. And while there, I'll probably add to the sandwiches other household items. Your customers and employees need consideration and basic customer service in the deli section....unless I am the only one with this experience. read more

Final follow up, same theme as previous posts. If you're in anything that resembles a hurry don't bother with this store. Today was it, after multiple visits with only 1/2 or 1/3 of the checkout lines open with long lines in every single one, I'm done. I'll pay a few more bucks, and get far better meat, seafood and produce from Paradise, Woodlands, Molly Stones, 7-11...anyplace but the Stawberry Safeway. read more

Came here in the morning before 4th of July weekend, and an employee, Zameer, profiled my husband who is 31 and buying me a 6-pack of wheat beer and ice. He looked at his license and said "this isn't you", and refused to sell him a 6-pack until another employee confirmed that my husband looks exactly like his ID picture, and had all CCs in the same name. Also made him reproduce his signature, which was identical and still did not believe him-odd. Poor/borderline-offensive customer service. I called 25 minutes before closing and the pharmacist placed me on hold only to tell me that she was alone and had customers waiting and that she could not fill the prescription in time for a sick little boy. She dismissed my husband who was waiting there at the counter and sent him away without a prescription. She clearly has no idea about customer service or empathy for her customers. On top of that she had accepted the prescription on their system, so now we had to pay cash at the nearest 24 hour pharmacy! read more
