The only reason they get 2 stars is that their pharmacy is wonderful. Fast and very friendly staff. The rest of the store is a joke. Forget grabbing some lunch at the prepared food counters. There's always a sushi person and a sandwich person working; but it's a complete hit or miss if anyone else is working the other two, long counters. Today I waited for a live body for ten minutes. No one showed. The sushi lady just shrugged her shoulders. So much for lunch. Today I returned a milk product that had turned bad. Employee reply - "Well, it's expired! Do you have proof of purchase?" Maybe that's why I brought it in! As if I would choose that awful store to make a secret switch on a $4.50 item. Puhleease! I found 3 refrigerated soups on the refrigerated shelf that has expiration dates of 4/19/19. Five days past their prime and they're selling these products! The complete lack of customer service is enough to make us stop going here. read more

If you like terrible service, mediocre prices, and a totally incompetent pharmacy...this place is for you! If you think a pharmacy line will be quick and follows by a knowledgeable and friendly pharmacy staff...boy are you wrong. They seem to be challenged by the most simple of tasks like, insurance, giving you all of the prescriptions you came for, having a prescription at all, picking up the phone, staffing the drop off counter....do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. What's great is that following the pharmacy trip is generally some shopping. This will be followed by long lines, grumpy staff, and an overall unpleasant feeling following what should have been a quick and easy trip to the market. By now your car will have been dinged by the packed parking lot...congrats! read more

Excellent meat department. If you're looking for something that's not in the display case(s), talk to Luke and tell him what you need. When we needed a 2-lb London broil for a new recipe, no problem, 15 minutes later Luke brought out a beautiful "steamship round" (he explained the history of that terminology) 2-lbs on the dot. When we needed some 1-1/2" thick bone in pork chops (with the tenderloin) for an impromptu barbecue we had, he knocked it out of the park. Any time I need a nice lean eye of round for my smoked beef jerky recipe and there isn't one readily available in the meat case, he will take the time to cut one for me. The rest of the meat department staff are accommodating but if you're needing something really special, talk to Luke if he's available and he'll take care of you. read more

I am going to give this Safeway three stars because I really like the pharmacy here. Jennifer and her crew are wonderful and always go out of their way to find solutions to issues. The store itself hires people who are a little more challenged with life than many of us and I appreciate that affirmation of them. Wait times are a little long in the lines but again, people are friendly. read more

Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Mill Valley, California

I just left Safeway. Why post about a grocery store? Weird right? Lol. I'm on my way to Angel Island and we stopped her in the way to get some sandwiches. Every single employee I spoke with interacted with me on a personal level. The woman in the deli asked where we are traveling and do we have room in the car, which made me smile. The man near the hot foods talked to me about being a mom and kids. The cashier at Check-out looked at me and said "thank you for helping" when I grabbed a bag and started putting a couple items inside. They were all little exchanges that let me know I was seen and appreciated. So, why post about a grocery store? Because it's nice to be treated like a person and not just another customer. The anyone reading this, post when things are good, not just when they are bad. read more

Paul Newman's Last Hope. Lisa Marie's Secret Scandal. I call this location the Grimway, and the magazines at the checkout counter perfectly reflect the ambience. They demolished an existing sad store, and built a brand new slightly larger even more pathectic Safeway....yes, they put their crack Gulag team on this one. This is Marin......we don't get a Lifestyle store?! read more

The store is big and has good inventory but the staff are SO rude. The checkers will berate and chastise you. I only go if I have to and I can use the self checkout. Even then you better hope you don't need help. Clearly the "customer service" part of the employee handbook is missing or flat out ignored. read more

Safeway whore here I can't establish the fact that I am a whore to certain areas when it comes to retail. I've already confessed to the fact that Target owns me. In addition, I am severely addicted to certain spots of caffeinated indulgences. In terms of shoes, I've had much luck servicing the cash registers at several Macy's by purchasing shoes and then more shoes. *sigh* This is hard work indeed. I've grown up with Safeway since I was a little child. If it were not for the Nugget here and there or the Raley's attempting to betray my inclinations, I've enjoyed being a client to Safeway and bending to their every will. We stopped by this Safeway because of the need for protein. Yes, unabashedly, my dear readers, I've been prone to serious jolts of protein encouragement and today was one of the days where chicken wings would suffice in calming my irate tummy and ultimately, my demanding mind. The chicken wings here are fantastic. Especially when they are first made. At 59 cents each, I easily devoured close to ten of these little wonders. I was not much of a fan of their spicy nuggets, but W and our hosts loved them and easily consumed them with the ease of popping jelly bellies. In addition, I purchased the netted bag of clementine tangerines (or affectionately named "lil' cuties") This Safeway is large, clean and reeks of healthy Mill Valley hospitality and yuppie cuteness and when the need hits for something quick or robust, this would be the market where everyone would run into one another, without the strollers. read more

In a land of Mollie Stone's, Whole Paycheck and my arch nemesis Trader Joe's...it's hard to keep up with the Jones' of Marin County!!! Safeway has taken off her platform cork heels, cleaned off the blue eyeliner, and has switched her Baby Phats to Rock and Republic. This Safeway, has a semi-swanky deli, an "organic" brand of food and even a cheese section. All under and huge wide ceiling with great lighting and venitlation! Way to step up Safeway....next stop...dry food bins and vegan bakery items! read more

They close down the old 1960's era Safeway and chain off the lot. They bring in the wrecking ball and blow it up. Its closed for almost a year. Finally one day, a bright new shiny Safeway stands in its place. Ok, let me get this straight.... --The new store is only slightly bigger than the old store. May I ask what was the point in tearing the whole building down just to add a few square feet? You could have just slapped a lean-too on the backside and saved us all 9 months of grocery-less hell. --Hello, Safeway geniuses. Do you think you might have forgotten something? Hmm. You sure? Oh yeah, they're called CART RETURNS. You seem to have overlooked those when you built the new parking lot. Now we have carts strewn all over the place, carelessly rammed into car bumpers, and rolling around unattended in the breeze. Brilliant. --Great improvement, adding more checkstands. Now we have 11 instead of 8! Woo hoo! Problem is you still have only the same 5 slow-as-molasses checkers working there. Outstanding forethought, friends. --Amazing improvement in the produce department. The fruits and vegetables I used to buy there were always sad and anemic. Now thanks to the miracle of Twice-A-Minute Spray Showers my produce is soaking wet, sad and anemic. After a long hard day of work there is nothing I like more than playing Dodge The Rainshower while trying to pick out an albino bell pepper. --My favorite new addition by far is the bag your own groceries game. Oh sure, you have that one sweat-brow'd bagger that loves his job so much he bitches the entire time and constantly asks the cashier if he can go on break. But really, I prefer struggling to load Wheaties and Raid into bags myself, while the cashier is endlessly preoccupied finding my name on the receipt so she proudly announce "Thank you, Miss Phraplctr". Great to have you back, Safeway. read more

I have never seen a more poorly operated grocery store. Consistently insufficient staffing results in 12-deep cashier lines, incredibly long waits and absolutely no inclination toward serving customers. Items are often out of stock. Be prepared to bag your own groceries, because the luxury of hiring baggers is apparently something they can't afford. If I had a choice, I would avoid Safeway at all costs. read more

The Safeway signature brand is to wait in a long line after dealing with poor store design. It's amazing they're still in business and haven't realized the frustrating experience it is to shop here... read more

Standard Safeway store. Standard service. Standard selection. Standard prices. Not a whole lot outstanding about it. I will say that it does have a Starbucks and a deli and a pharmacy and a bakery and a butcher shop. It also has a florist. Thank you Safeway for your florist. My marriage thanks you too. ;) It's noteworthy that there is a real lack of supermarkets and Southern Marin. read more

good place to shop and staff really incrediably helpful to me.

I will save my own time, spare the gorey details and get to the point: this is the worst grocery store I have ever shopped in. The people who work there emobdy the definitions of incompetent, slow, and rude. To be clear, this is the Safeway in Strawberry Village. Avoid. read more

If you like factory food and don't mind eating, or feeding your children, pesticide and weedkiller residues in non-organic food, if you don't mind advertising on every surface, including the floor, gimmicks that you pay for like coupons and all the data mining that goes on, then Safeway is an OK choice. Your money leaves town and your "food savings" will be paid for later when the medical bills start arriving. The nice folks that work there are Unionized and get benefits, that's one good thing, although Safeway is trying to get rid of them by hoodwinking people into using the self-checkout B.S., which apparently isn't very popular. But they force you to wait in long lines or use the job destroying, but not price lowering, technology. The handicapped people that work there are a huge tax write off to Safeway as they get special tax breaks and get paid very little. We had one such fellow sneeze all over our food the last time we shopped there. A few minutes extra driving can get you to the locally owned Good Earth Market in Tamalpais Valley, (Highway 1 offramp toward Muir Woods). One of the finest food stores in America; 100% organic of the highest quality. Some items there are cheaper than Safeway. Others the same, a few, more expensive. Aren't you worth it? A nice social scene too and a pleasant cafe to sit and eat. read more

A friend and I stopped here after leaving Muir Beach. Although our encounter with this Safeway location was brief, we had a great experience here. The staff we interacted with we very helpful and friendly. The prices aren't absurd, which was a bit of a surprise since it's Marin County, and the food was great (which is consistent with any other Safeway location). read more

Thank God they were open at midnight. This place saved my ass. I hadn't arrived at SFO until 10:15, and messing with the car rental had taken more time than I had planned. By the time I passed Mel's on Van Ness and Lombard Street on my way up 101 through San Francisco, I was too lazy to stop, so I pressed on figuring I'd find somewhere in Marin to get food for my 300 mile all-night drive to Humboldt County. (oh, what a devoted brother won't do to make a little sister's 50th b-day bash). I spied Safeway with people milling around as I zoomed through MIll Valley. I was able to lurch to the right and slow down enough to make the exit, and stop in. Score! I found a turkey wrap, fresh veggies and fresh fruit, stocked up on bottled water and juice. I was set, and damn glad they were open. read more

Their newest quick checker "Jason" is very rude and immature. I would-stay away from his line in this particular Safeway. Said something to the manager and hopefully it will get pasted onto this young immature man. read more

Out of the two Safeways in town, this is my favorite. It's big and spacious and they have almost everything you need. I went grocery shopping one night around 11pm and all the seafood and meat was put away. I guess they don't have people working behind the counters even though the place is open 24 hours. How is a girl gonna buy scallops if there are no scallops to be had? Warning: I've witnessed 2 accidents in the parking lot here. Apparently, people don't like to look when they back up and then everyone ends up backing into one another and causing a big back up. Be careful in the lot! read more

Yeah, I know what you're thinking.. who writes a review of grocery story chain? Well, for the record, this is review isn't about the store as a whole - it's about their deli. And I've got to say, it's pretty damn solid. Don't get me wrong, this isn't Ike's Sandwiches. But if you're looking for a quality sandwich with fresh meats/ingredients for under $7 (that just happens to be the size of a football), then Safeway's deli is the place for you. Judging by the large lunchtime crowd, I'm not alone in this opinion. You have everyone from construction workers to soccer moms waiting in line to order everything from your standard turkey & swiss sando to a grilled panini. Plus, you can supersize your meal with some chips and a soda for a buck more. Kind of hard to beat! Personally, I'm a big fan of their pastrami sandwich on sourdough roll (comes with lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, pickles, etc.). I abstain from the mayo/mustard and go for the chipotle sauce instead. Like I said, the sandwich is pretty darn huge. So I'm already full after eating just half. I like to save the other half for dinner. Long story short - this deli is the real deal. I know that it's located in a supermarket, so it's not the sexiest of locations. But you can't always judge a book by its cover. These sandwiches are legit. read more

I wish I could rate this store with ZERO stars. I picked up a cooked turkey breast from the Deli dept. Took it home for dinner and it made my entire family sick. I called the store and customer service put me on hold for the manager for 20 minutes... the phone connection disconected. I called back and customer service acted annoyed that I was calling back. Took my phone number and said someone would be calling me back. It's been five days now and never heard from them. I have lived in Mill Valley for years and I will never shop there again. They seem to be so flippant about my family and I being sick. Really not a good way to handle customers. When I get a bit more time I will report this to the health department. read more

I LOVE EGGS the 18 pack and tequilla corelajo is only like 20 bucks usually good breakfast combo

Hands down this is the WORST run grocery store I have every been in. And always the worst customer experience. From the ton of abandon grocery carts that were all over the parking lot to the empty boxes littering the aisles, to the over flowing trash cans of receipts and empty baskets. And of course the guarantee that you'll always wait in long lines because they NEVER have enough checkers. There were two check out lines open at 6:00 p.m.on a weekday (Uh, kind of a busy time as people are getting off work). I'm not going back. I refuse to reward a company that simply does not care about their customers. I would much rather give my money to the stores that appreciate my business and actually care that I have a good experience while shopping: Paradise, Trader Joe's, Costco, Whole Foods, and Target. My hope is that if enough of us refuse to be treated this way and not shop there, then perhaps they will close and someone else will buy.... read more

Poor deli service!!! There were 3 ladies working on a busy Sunday afternoon. 2 had great customer service skills and of course I get the one who acts like I'm putting her out by ordering a sandwich. Went up to the front cashier to pay because I knew better than to ask if I could pay there..... The checker at the front told be to go to 7-11 when I asked where I could get some ice. WHAT?!?! With a straight face even. WOW!!! Guess you have to be from Mill Valley to get treated with any kind of respect out there. DAMN SHAME. read more

Safeway - Yes, my sandwich only had TWO slices of meat. Didn't see this until I got to the beach to have lunch. Smdh! - Grocery Near Me - Mill Valley, California

This store is conveniently located and well laid out, but I always end up buying spoiled food at this location and also at the Corte Madera Town Center. I have bought cheese, deli soups, packaged dairy, cold cuts, and other items. I can't go to this store without accidentally purchasing something off the shelf past the expiration date. At first, I thought it was a one time occurrence and I let it go. But now, I see a pattern. It happens every time I shop here. When I shop at a nice grocery store like this, I don't think when buying the first item off the shelf that I need to maniacally check expiration dates. I check on things like milk, but when you are going through the store in a hurry or with kids, this isn't realistic. Yes, I know that I could return the said item to the grocery store and get my money back with my receipt, but who has the time for that? Grocery shopping shouldn't be that hard. Where is my receipt? Now I have to get in the car with my disgusting spoiled soup and lug my two kids to wait for a manager to approve my $3.50 purchase. I think that this may be systematic as both stores are guessing correctly that I will not go through the hassle to do this. They keep making money off of spoiled food. Something is really wrong with this grocery store because it has happened to me across all departments multiple times. I don't shop here weekly, maybe twice a month and I will not anymore unless I am really in a pinch. read more

A dirtier location that tends to look ransacked with extremes in staffing quality. Not necessarily the best food deals...in fact I'd rather pay a bit more and go to a better maintained and staffed store. A lot of people use it as parking lot drop off. Most head to locally owned smaller markets. If Safeway is a preference, try the Corte Madera location instead. Hey prices are OK, but I strongly object to having to spend at least 30 or 40 minutes each week going through the product list and clicking on each individual item that I want to get the lower price on. It's not really a discount, but it is the price that you should be paying. Anyone who has half a brain knows that the discounted price is actually the regular price. I just hate playing the game but if I don't then my bills for food are 20 % to 30 % more than they should be! Also, I really hate it when I'm forced to buy items like nuts, dry fruits, etc . in Plastic Boxes some of which are so low to the floor that I fall over bending that low. Please dump the Plastic and go back to the great selfserve bins where we can buy the exact amount we want. Safeway is causing such a great problem with the amount of Plastic Waste your creating. You Are Killing the Planet. Please Stop! Please Mr. Safeway cut off the game so I don't have to waste 30 minutes each week! We're not all stupid. read more

I have been going into this particular deli for 5 years as I work in the mall. The young, pleasant African American man was very helpful as are all the deli staff. The staffing levels for checkout are dismal at best at this location. There seems to never be more than 3 lines open w 1 being the express. I have not done a large shopping for months here for that reason. I would rather stop 3 times a week and do self checkout w a few items (even though others go through w a full cart-I don't-my own pet peeve). I like the folks who work here. After years of shopping at this Safeway, it is nice to be asked how my daughter is doing, or that they haven't seen my husband for awhile...was he busy at work? Cool human connection. On the flip side, when I only need an item or two and it's busy, I like that they have 6 self service stations (Still, why is at least one always not working?). The worst thing at this Safeway for me is the bakery. They are always (really, always) selling baked goods past there "sell by" date. I learned this the hard way by buying a lemon tart that was well past its prime. Moldy, fermented lemon, Yum! read more

Ahh, Safeway. It's the safe way to shop, get it? I often wonder what the marketing team that came up with this branding was doing. I realize that this is an old chain of supermarkets, and the culture was different then. Whole Foods it aint. Anyway, this Safeway is like most any other Safeway you've ever been to. Ubiquitous selection of cheeses, meats, breads, etc. This one's got a florist and a deli, so you're all set. That being said, sometimes the deli guys are a little surly. Not sure why, but they've been a little curt with me at times. Must be the senior Marin set that works their nerves. I can understand the sentiment. This Safeway is conveniently located, which is also a plus. I would say to use the self checkout lines when at all possible, because there are always massive lines here. However, during my last few trips the senior Marin set (see above) have been experimenting with self checkout, leading to disastrous results (i.e., it takes longer than if you had waited in line for a cashier). read more

Yesterday, Monday 4pm in the produce aisle my cart locks up, wheels frozen ,,,,,security gone bad. So, a nice customer tried to help me by getting the attention of a worker 5 feet away. Not a move to help or apologize for such stupid ancient broken technology Also, I hate to use the 'lady' card, but really?? Help a girl out fellas. The customer was chivalrous enough to step up. And they wonder why they're losing customers ??? One star is for Marissa, the checker who saved me from the only 2 LONG checkout lines that were open during prime time. All the businesses on the east side of the 101 in Mill Valley need to band together and get the city or the county or Caltrans to come up with better freeway exit signs. Have you ever tried to get to the In-N-Out when you're coming southbound? I have, many times, and although I know the way, I still get lost. And getting back on the freeway afterward is an even bigger adventure. I think going northbound is what it's all about. I felt embarrassed to be eating out by myself on a Saturday night, but then I looked around, and no one was paying attention to me, because I'm way too old to be worried about this crap--kids ten years younger than me are way too old to be worried about this stuff, and if they were worried about this stuff in high school, then they might have 10-year-olds of their own running around. But I forgot, sorry, the teen birthrate is down. Or so I'm told. But in addition to my grilled cheese animal style, I wanted something to drink and something for the next day(s), so I came to the Safeway, and you know what? It's great. Er, good. It's better than the one in Corte Madera. The employees are nicer, even on a Saturday night when some guy is sweating them about a nickel. I gave him a dime, and he tried to give me back the nickel he got in change. Are you serious, son? You can keep the damn change. The parking lot is a total this-is-where-I-learned-how-to-drive-late-at-night-with-my-dad-when-I-was-fifteen deal, and heaven knows the Mariners of the world need to know how to drive before they wreck the brand new BMW daddy bought them for their sixteenth birthday.
