Over two years later and customers are still bagging their own groceries while the checker stands there and watches...interesting.

This Safeway used to be my favorite grocery store. The employees were the best, friendly, helpful and competent. Sadly, only a few of the old time employees are left at this store (and they are wonderful as ever). The new employees are the exact opposite .. unfriendly, slow, clueless, incompetent (selling slimy old fish and meat at the meat counter!), and some are down right rude. Some don't speak English, which is a problem if you are supposed to offer competent service at the meat or deli counter. Some of the employees would benefit from some basic customer service training like the policy it was recently enacted at Target. I miss the olden days with a friendly chat at the checkout register. Now I won't even get an acknowledgement of my existence, eye contact or even a single word when I check out. Absolutely strange experience! The pharmacists are a mixed bag also. Some are wonderful and friendly (shoutout to the sweet pharmacist and the woman with dreadlocks), others extremely rude (talking about the young man that administered drop in Covid vaccines on 10/31). I have been shopping at this Safeway for almost 20 years. Sadly, this Safeway has gone downhill massively since the new owners have taken over and staffed it with the new employees. read more

This is my regular Safeway where I shop weekly. I had an incredibly frustrating experience here today. I got 2 orders of the $5 fried chicken deal, and the deli counter girl put on $9.99 stickers on each. I proceeded to go through the cashier, where he rung both up at $9.99. He tells me to go to customer service for a refund. The customer service gal says I have to go back to the deli to get the correct sticker put on the chicken bags. The deli counter girl puts on new $9.99 stickers, and says she can't refund me, I have to go to customer service! I go back to customer service, tell her the deli girl wouldn't refund me, so she opens her till and hands me $10. Come on Safeway! Why did I have to go around to 5 counters for a damn chicken deal?! read more

Overcharged once again at Safeway on Camino Alo. This time, it was Open Nature granola. They are clearly marked two for $7.00 on the shelf. I bought four and they rang up for $15.96 instead of $14.00. When I pointed this out to the cashier, she stated that Safeway has a price matching procedure for overcharged items. But she also stated that in this case the procedure would be of no help and the price would still be $15.96. read more

Wonderful fresh produce, and an abundance of alcohol. Safeway on Camino alto has everything from gluten-free vegan to full fat regulars.

If I could rate in the minus I would. The pharmacy has the most incompetent employees imaginable. They rarely answer the phone and when they do they put you on hold only to then drop the call. They don't check for phone prescription orders and they are rude. They can't even get a phone number right when a script is actually ready. I come to this store all the time and it's been pleasant enough. Except for Friday and Saturday nights when it's swamped with high school kids. I understand there's not much you can do about behavior in the store but out front there's a mob of kids, some of them literally rolling around on the ground next to the front doors, and riding electric bikes on the sidewalk. Customer service at self checkout is terrible. I asked about a sale item, and was told it was not, a take it or leave it situation. The store director must retrain her employees that the customer is still the reason why they have employment, and for this reason, she should resign as I will never go this place again. This Mill Valley Safeway has an awful bakery. Despite having been shrunken by 33% I bought what I thought would be a delicious strawberry cake bar. Well, it was stale and tasted like it was left in the refrigerator too long. They should have pulled it. Apparently, all Safeways have shrunken the size of their desserts. The parfait cups are half full and are good for 2 bites. Fewer cookies and fewer breakfast cookies per unit. read more

Surprisingly got the best fried chicken recently from a supermarket. Just fresh out from the kitchen. Very crispy on the outside and extremely juicy on the inside. Pretty tasty and unbelievably better than most of fried chicken shops. read more

4 1/2 Stars This Safeway has nearly all 1 and 2 star Yelp reviews across the board. I have been shopping at Safeway's for five decades (including going with my parents as a child). I remember how "economical" and downscale they once were. I've seen their dramatic improvement over this time period. Safeway has become a nationwide, corporate behemoth in the past 25 years. This definitely speaks to the success of the Safeway model which, like I said, had humble beginnings here in the SF Bay Area. My last local Safeway was in the Rincon Valley area of Santa Rosa. That Safeway had better Yelp reviews. I would give that Safeway 4 1/2 stars. I am on the border with giving this Mill Valley Safeway 5 stars or not. The reason is I just moved to Muir Beach and have not shopped here that much yet. I definitely prefer Whole Foods Market down the street where I used to shop exclusively when I last lived in the Tennessee Valley part of Mill Valley years ago. It makes me sad that the extravagance, abundance of luxurious displays, and clearly upscale volume and selection of items here goes unappreciated from most other reviewers. This Safeway---like many Safeway's in affluent cities---is impressive. I cannot speak to the numerous complaints and unpleasant customer service cited from others. That is not my experience. But, I am extremely patient and understanding of people in general. The prices here are better than Whole Foods Market, obviously. The produce and deli are probably not as good as Whole Foods, but Safeway is truly a "super market." You don't really need to go a Trader Joe's, Target, Costco, or drugstore chain store because Safeway has it all. This Safeway, like my previous Safeway in Rincon Valley, is huge. Shopping here reminds me of Home Depot because of the endless aisles and dizzying amount of available products. But, the lighting is gentler and the carefully designed product displays are definitely nicer than a Home Depot! Wink. Frankly, I am impressed with the appearance of this Safeway and what Safeway has become. I respect the other reviews and the negative experiences related in them. Stood outside for 5 mins knocking on the door as employees refused to help us as the door was locked at the 11:47 while their posted hours of operation are 5am - 2am. Here's a price comparison of what I can get at Whole Foods Market versus Safeway: Whole Foods: small salad I put together myself of a random assortment of items including beets, edaname, lettuce, carrots, etc = yummy but left me hungry = $5.19 Safeway: 1/2 pound mixed bean salad, bag of ranch flavored goldfish, pack of (10) chips ahoy granola bars = yummy and lots of snacks left for the future = $4.52 Also, I love the (free) Safeway card discounts and saved $2.38! This Safeway has really gone downhill. Constantly running out of products while stocking items that don't move. This week I went in at 8:30 am and could not get a crab because the seafood counter was not open. Tonight I went in at 5:20 and when I asked for a crab the person working there told me he could not clean or crack it for me because "the counter is drying." Seriously? He didn't say I could comeback when it was dry. (Do they have no paper towels?). No wonder there's a huge number of crab there. So I did what I should have done in the first place: drove to Whole Foods where it was easy to get a nice, cleaned and cracked crab. Who is managing our Safeway? Oh yeah, no one! read more

I would give zero stars if I could. During 6 of the last 8 times I have been shopping there, the checkers didn't offer me any bags or any service related to bagging groceries. None of the other customers that I saw received any bags or bagging services either. The checker just flung all of our paid groceries down the slide and let us customers sort them out among us ourselves. This has now happened so many times with different checkers that it's become clear that this is a training, management and policy enforcement problem at only this run down Safeway. I've never experienced such poor service at any of the other branches. The whole staff, starting from the top management down should be replaced. read more

I shop for most things at Whole Foods and tend to only visit Safeway for cleaning supplies and wine during their wine sales as 40% off with a Safeway card is pretty hard to beat. But don't go there looking for wine advice as the staff are pretty clueless. They have a small but decent selection of organic fruit at much lower prices than Whole Foods. The lines are always horribly long, and as someone else pointed out, the place can be mobbed with Tam students if you happen to go around lunch time. Despite the slow service, the checkout staff are all very nice and thank you by name. read more

Safeway stores squeeze the last dollar out of customers with average quality factory food and try to force the public to use self checkout, along with the data mining, taking your picture, combining it with your credit card number and what you but, plus the gimmicky specials. You are the product for sale to marketers when you shop at Safeway. All the profits leave town and no local suppliers are used. The kind of place that people who put more value in what kind of car they lease than what they eat would shop. The opposite of that is the Good Earth Market in Tam Junction. 100% organic, of the highest quality, fresh grain ground every morning to make bread, pizza crust and pastries, the best local Marin and California produce and profit sharing for employees. read more

Horrible service always. I've stopped going in there since the prices on the shelves are unreliable and the place is understaffed and what staff there is is grouchy and uninformed. I tried their delivery service, maybe it would be better if I didn't have to go in - live and inventory and prices supposedly shown ....... it's worse. Only 2 of the 10 items I ordered showed up and they sent an email alert after it was too late to cancel. Charged me a service fee, delivery fee AND a bag fee (5 times the required fee) for a bag I didn't need. So I ended up with the world's most expensive cabbage and coke. The most recent trip, I came in a late hour, I found what I was looking for, it was reasonably priced for the area, and the cashier was pleasant. Overall it was a nice experience. You know that you're totally single and completely bached out (yes, like bachelor) when you go to Safeway at 10:30pm on a friday night. I had other things to do that probably would have been better management of my time, but if I didn't go then, I would have had to get up early to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner before going to work. And everyone that knows me well understands I am not a morning person. I rolled up to Safeway in my hoody and sweats, with my gold Pumas on, rocking out to my ipod. I figured if I 'm going to go on a friday night, I might as well bring the party with me where ever I go. I usually do, but I really wanted to bring it tonight. I grabbed my little basket, threw it over my arms, and started gettin' down to a little Goodie Mob while pickin' out some organic heirloom tomatoes for my lunch salad. I threw some house-styled maneouvers in to the mix as I picked my Amy's organic soups, and started shakin' my booty as I grabbed some dried cranberries for my oatmeal. But where did all the tofu go? I pulled my left earbud out to ask this very question to the helpful late night Safeway boys that always love a girl in food location distress. They don't carry it anymore. How can I live in Mill Valley, home of those tree hugging green hippies all driving those completely freaky quiet hybrid cars, and have no tofu? What is going on? They have the tofu I need to cook, but where's the teriyaki and miso glazed tofu for those who are cooking challenged such as myself? I was disappointed. They had a few Tofurkey items which I threw in the basket as some TechN9ne came onto my tunes tonight, and thought, well at least they have the soy milk I'm looking for. A little non fat vanilla West Soy for those who watch their caloric intake such as myself. The line was short, the people were helpful, and they've got some more organic produce than they have had in the past. And unlike Whole Paycheck, I got out with a full bag of food for 25 bucks....holla....and I danced my fly ass right outta there like I was on fiyah...... read more

I came to this Safeway simply because I didn't believe there could be any worse Safeway than the one located at Strawberry Village. I was wrong. I should have listened to the many reviews on Yelp warning me to stay away from this place. But, alas, I was young and naive, and I thought I knew better. If only I had listened, I could have saved so much precious time. This Safeway is every bit as slow as the Strawberry Village location. However, this location has far less traffic than Strawberry Village, so how they manage to be equally slow is a great mystery. The biggest difference between the two locations is the size. This is a very small grocery store with a very minimal selection. I had to leave and go to another store to purchase about a third of my grocery list, because they either didn't have what I needed or it was of terribly poor quality. Do yourself a favor. Listen to the collective voice of Yelpers and go to a different store. This is a 2 star location at best. read more

Worst Safeway ever! This is the closest Safeway to my home, yet I avoid shopping here like the plague. Why, you ask? Because this Safeway provides the worst customer experience possible. They never staff their check stands. Even though they have several check stands, most of the time only one or two are open at a time - even when the store is crowded. I've never seen them open check stands even when there are lines stretching down the aisles - customers just have to wait. Other stores call for more staff when this happens. I don't shop at Safeway often, but when I do, I drive to Strawberry since the manager there understands customer service. read more

This is the worst Safeway I've been to and the irony is I shop at it almost weekly because of its proximity to where I live. The staff is non existent other than the few checkers they have. The Safeway brand products are frequently out of stock. I've complained about this to the manager several times as other friends of mine have, no change ever. The lines to check out all all hours are super long due to never having more than 3 lanes open. For being in an affluent area it's a joke that Safeway managers and corporate just don't seem to care about this store. read more

Why would anyone shop here? Expensive. Bad produce. Bad meat dept. Just yuk. I picked up many items in the produce department and would never buy them. I picked up two items that were soft and rotten and got disgusting goo on my hands. I bought a pork roast that was in a plastic wrapper and it smelled when i opened it. Safeway is a last resort... on a low end, crappy chain of stores that I would rather live without. I try my hardest to avoid this store like the plague. Even if they have good things (Which I am not saying it does) the lines are insane... and the service is most likely awful. Although there are two or three checkers I enjoy. Most people that work there seem so miserable and some even yell at customers... I also found an item there that was three times more expensive than Williams Sonoma... how is that? Also, I am convinced that in an effort to lower prices they have compromised a lot of the quality in their products. If I have to go, I still do... If I have forgotten something somewhere else, or I am too tired to drive out of my way (it is on my way home from work) I will go but never is it my first choice, and with the lines and parking lot... most times I just keep driving. read more

This Safeway is cleaner then the one in Corte Madera so right there is a plus. The lay out of the frozen food section is a little weird but other then that this seems to be a average Safeway with good parking lot located right off the freeway. The after hour deli selection is very sad so if you go there wanting something to eat that is somewhat fresh think twice. Also a very negative point to add, their sushi contains CARBON MONOXIDE. It reads such on the label. I have never seen this before but apparently they use it as a preservative of color to keep the maguro ( Tuna) pink. That is not cool. Isn';t it bad enough we have to inhale these poisonous vapors, now you want us to eat them too? Shame on you Safeway for selling TOXIC products for people to eat. read more
