Safeway, what the hell is wrong with you? During the lunchtime rush, you shut down the express lanes to drive people through those obnoxious ROBOT CHECKERS. It's like saying, "We're too busy! Do it yourself!"
May I kindly remind the management at this store that they are not running an ARCO station, we don't DO self-service in grocery stores, unless the summer is very hot and there are police cars burning outside. What's the matter, your profit margin not up to expectations? We know ROBOT CHECKERS don't need salaries or benefits. They don't have families. They don't get repetitive strain injuries. And most importantly, they DON'T JOIN UNIONS.
But what about service? Have you forgotten? Service is the heart of retail. Service is the center of the business. ROBOTS don't give service, they TAKE it. You have to repair them. Call the NCR service tech. If I want self-service, I'll go to ARCO. Jiffy Lube has better service than the robots. Robots do not say "Good morning, Uncle Bob. How are you doing today?" in a meaningful way. Their LCD countenances are repulsive, sort of like those annoying television screens above the gas pumps. People need people. They're the luckiest people in the world. Robots need maintenance and firmware upgrades. AND they're vulnerable to terrorist hacking!
The store is pretty well stocked. The staff is very helpful. Oh, the deli folks can be a little testy, but not always. The parking lot is tight. The lights are often on during the daytime. Guess that's so they can pay PG and E what they save with those damned robot checkers. LOL!
BUT WAIT!! There is redemption. On check stand 1, there is RICHARD. The checker God. The funniest, HELPFUL, most humble yet savvy checker in the entire Safeway checker fleet. Richard is a musician, and a cowboy and a grocery checker. But he's going to retire soon, I hear. What a loss. The pinheads in management will probably replace him with a ROBOT checker. Then they can go to the regional VP and brag about all the money they saved by not hiring a human. Wonder when the regional VP will tell them about Nexuz, the automated store management software that NCR is selling to Safeway?
So there, after 3 years, I've thrown in the towel over the stripping of the express lanes at lunchtime (when we have only a half hour to grab our lunch and dash--perfect time to slow down the throughput, eh, Ms. Manager?)
Want me to check myself out? Want me to bag my own groceries? Then PAY me a freaking salary, Safeway. Disgusting.
Last time I went through the Robot Checkstand at Safeway, instead of a receipt, it thanked me for voting for Carly Fiorina!! WTF?!? LOL!!
It's a twisted world, isn't it? i fit right in! read more
