This review is for the bakery. I don't think it's too much to expect that the people who answer the phone to take down an order have the communication skills to actually take down the order. I don't mean a small misspelling in the writing - I mean the cake entirely. The very first question is what size, and it's all downhill from there. Wrong size, wrong color, wrong frosting. Despite repeating myself multiple times AND having the order repeated back correctly. So if you want a cake that's only going to feed half your guests, this is the place for you! read more

I got my cart with groceries and when I tried to use my electronic gift card shown in my phone screen they said they couldn't scan it that I had to PRINT IT and bring the paper what is this 50 years ago? Then the cashier asked for help and this lady came and she said they can't scan it. I asked if they could enter the gift card number manually since I had the code and they said no. I asked if their customer service could do it and the lady said "I AM Customer Service" with attitude. I stopped by this Safeway on my way to my moms thinking the service would be better but never again. Get it together Safeway in a pandemic most stores use electronic gift cards not paper. By the way I used the same gift card in a Safeway in Castro Valley yesterday and there were no problems using it there at all. I wish there was a way to rate the deli only. I have eaten the fried chicken for years and it was of consistent quality at a good price point. Lately though the fried chicken at this location as well as in Moraga, the next town over, has been substandard. They have been making it very salty and overcooked and dry as heck. Had to shop for elderly mom who is eighty five and legally blind and shopped five am and wound up having to go home drag her out of bed so they could confirm legitimate purchase.Tim is manager and asked for my drivers license and I gave it to him and still not accept order.So elderly mom came in car and he forced her to show her driver's license and then she went to sit in car.Safeway subjected her and me to more chance of getting CoVid.Sorry but this doesn't cut it.Too bad nice store not gonna shop hear anymore but for my Redbox til corporate takes care of setting Tim straight. read more

Worst grocery store on the planet. 6pm on a tuesday and they only had 2 lines open with dozens of angry customers standing in line for nearly 45 minutes just to check out. once my ice cream was nearly completely melted, i pushed my shopping cart down the nearest aisle and left with over $100 in groceries sitting in it. If they want to save money by not staffing employees, have fun paying people to put away groceries left by disgruntled customers. i love safeway but will never set foot in this location again. stay as far away as you can and hope they get a new manager asap! read more

I've been going to this Safeway for a long time. Everyone here is professional and friendly. Went here to stock up for Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day and they had everything I needed. They offered a great Thanksgiving Turkey meal combo for 2 people (around $20). It's great for us since we only needed food for 2 people and most restaurant combos offer deals for 4 or more. They initially incorrectly rung up this deal but they were very professional, friendly and quickly refunded the difference. Thanks Carmen (deli) and Linda (customer service) for your help and understanding on this. I also appreciate Sha Sha for always being an awesome cashier. She always greets my mom and I with the same friendly and familiar demeanor and it's always a pleasure speaking with her. I've lived in Lafayette a long time and this is my go to place for grocery shopping because of its friendly staff and great hours (24/7). It will always remain my family's first choice for grocery shopping. Please keep up the great work! read more

I went in looking for dragonfruit and a couple other items. I found the dragonfruit, no problem in the produce department but there was no price tag. Without having to say anything, one of their employees, Allen quickly offered to price check the yellow dragonfruit. He returned with the price and then asked if I would like him to check the price on the red dragonfruit. So he ran back to the register to then run back to where my husband and I were. Additionally, since I was unsure of the quality of the fruit he allowed me to taste it. And that led to a sale! Allen went above and beyond with his friendliness and help. For the life of me I couldn't find an item I needed so I asked for help, they didn't know so they sent me to customer service. The service manager Linda was awesome. Not only did she take the time to walk me over to the item, she also gave me some tips on how to add a little flavor with some simple extras. I also wanted to say the store manager Tim was amazing, he has a safway store to take care of but he stopped what he was doing to help me bring my groceries to my car. I don't know who the front end manager is but she is awful. Every time I come here she is rude to staff and customers. She is always gossiping and never working. She won't acknowledge you when trying to speak to her. She acts like she can't be bothered. Safeway obviously doesn't care about her behavior because look at all the yelp reviews regarding this woman. She yelled and berated a bagger that appeared to have special needs. She yelled at him and cursed him under her breath. She is a vile human. I try to avoid her at all cost. Unfortunately, I had to have her ring me up the other day. She couldn't be bothered by me at all. She was too busy having a conversation with another employee. She didn't even greet me or ask if I need bags. I don't understand how this can be one of the most expensive areas in the country too live in and still have the crappiest Safeway. It is really cramped, overpriced and dirty. It's almost like a glorified 7-11. The produce here is usually almost rotten. I have to really pay attention when I'm shopping. The aisles are very narrow and it's hard to get around. It stinks this is the only major grocery in town. It's hard to get all of your staples from Diablo Foods and Whole Foods. Lafayette Safeway....I have memories of this place back when I was in high school and I was taking a Princeton SAT class across the street. This time around, we were getting lunch for our nice day picnic at Lafayette Reservoir. I got a California Dreamin on Dutch Crunch and loves got a turkey, tomato, pickle, lettuce, onion on Wheat. Also, he was intrigued by those huge packaged pickles in a bag call Big Mamas...so he couldn't resist getting one. They also have this deal going on that if you buy a sandwich, you can get a chips and a drink for free. Get on this ASAP as it's a great deal! Me and my boyfriend went to this Safeway to purchase beer and as we stood in line 6ft away waiting to check out we overheard the cashier, Denise, being very rude to the gentleman in front of us having him repeat back his ID information and wanting to see his full face without a mask ! When we stepped up to cash out she then had an attitude with my boyfriend about his ID acting like it was fake she told him to take off his mask in very demanding tone and when he offered her two other IDs one being his military ID she mumbled something rude under her breath and when he asked what she said she had a horrible attitude. She then told me that I couldn't help carry the beer we bought to the car because I didn't purchase it ! Having someone remove their mask in a pandemic in public is not safe ! We both work in healthcare and prefer to be safe in public ! Second being rude to a veteran on Memorial Day for no reason is a poor way to serve customers in your local community! read more

Stopped by here to pick a few things up on my way home. Everything seemed to be a little bit more disorganized than most Safeway stores I've been to. When I tried telling the person ringing me up that the price wasn't correct on one of my items she just voided it off and went on ringing up my items. When I tried telling her that I still wanted it, and would it be possible to do a price check, she slammed her hand on the counter and walked off. Someone else came to ring me up and that was it. no price check, didn't add the item that was taken off. when I asked to speak to the manager I was ignored completely as the new cashier yelled that she could take the next person. mind you I wasn't rude once, didn't raise my voice and was more startled by the woman smashing her hand on the counter. I thought twice about writing this review, then decided that if the shoe fits...... I almost always shop at the Orinda Safeway (where I live) and I love shopping there. I'd been out hiking and decided to stop at the Lafayette Safeway on my way home. Yes, I was damp & muddy from a lovely hike, but still a loyal Safeway customer. Not, though, at Lafayette anymore. I waited patiently at the checkstand to purchase maybe 20 items, including a very good Club Card special. The checker, Denise, absolutely ruined my day and I'm still upset about it. She was carrying on a conversation with another checker (about haircuts) and treated me like an annoyance. I wanted to ask her a question about getting a rain check and I got a dirty look and a curt "You have to have a Club Card for that". Well, duh. Then she had the bagger unload my purchases to verify that a coupon I presented was indeed used for my purchase - which made me feel like a cheat, or something. Then Denise announced that "now I have to ring this up - AGAIN!". Well, Denise, you should be doing your job in the first place and not acting so snotty to customers. I am still pretrty disgusted by the way Denise acted, and embarrassing me in front of other customers. Maybe I'm being a little sensitive, but Denise's behavior and attitude mean that I will no longer frequent the Lafayette Safeway. I'll stick with Orinda, where the staff are always friendly and courteous. If I'm in Lafayette, then Whole Foods, Diablo Market, or Trader Joe's will get my money. read more

I'm just not a fan of Safeway. I'd much rather go to the nearby Whole Foods, but once every couple of months I need an item I don't want to go further afield to Target for. This one is at least clean, but the check out women seem to rarely be paying attention - never mind that I see them smoking outside - but for example I've gone in with my own bag a couple of times for a single small item and still had them put it in a plastic bag. BS - parking lot is generally busy and please do look out for the locals that don't look for pedestrians or other cars - lines are usually long, so expect a wait - has everything any other Safeway has - bakery is better then Concord safeways - expect a wait if you want a sandwhich I come to Safeway every so often. After my big let down from my 5 dollar footlong Tuesday, I decided to take my own advice and go to Safeway for a sandwhich. I had to wait for 3 other people's sandwhiches to be made. Then I found out they only do ONE piece of cheese nowadays and will charge you 50 cents if you want another. That's a RIP OFF, if I've ever known one. I cheaply declined ;) The sandwhich itself was tasty. I got peppered turkey with a SLICE of cheddar on their dutch crunch roll (reg size). All of the ingredients were fresh and I was satisfied. I've come to know a few of the people that work at Safeway. Its nice when workers recognize other workers and are generally nice. But a few people always say wsup to me and there's a clerk lady that I always go to because she's nice :) I've shopped here a few times. Depending on what you want and need, it can be hit or miss. But you also know that there's some stuff you've got to go other places for. So take a good look around the Safeway and see if it has your basics. I'll be going here again usually its once a week. Either for a sandwhich, an energy protein bar, groceries or a pizza stick! lol. If you don't have a SAFEWAY CLUB CARD, you honestly need to be slapped! This is about their deli sandwich department. I am a paramedic so i get a breakfast sandwich every morning I work. This is the first time at this place. Snobby lady at counter.....Linda is her name. She had a bad day i guess, i ALWAYS substitute the ham for turkey in other stores. I pay 50 ct extra, no big deal. This Linda tells me that that is impossible. She gets even her boss who says no as well. Strange because it is written on their price list, substitutions 50 ct! She didnt put any condiments on it. When i asked her why? Answer: if you want all that, why dont you buy a regular sandwich? Well i dont, because it never has been an issue anywhere else! The cool spot for middle-schoolers. Now as a shopper, it's a whole different story. We literally only go there in a pinch. Any special deals are really only on stock-up items; unless it's a Sunday featured loss-leader the stock-up pricing is the same as the standard price of the same items at places like Target. The parking situation in the complex is horrendous and poorly laid out. ODD TRIVIA: For some reason this is the ideal location for middle school parents with early morning commutes to drop off their independent students. The parking layout is difficult to drive through especially when the sporting team monster vehicles are looking for parking at the same time. STANDOUTS: Floral department is surprisingly solid. DENISE NEEDS TO GO. After scrolling through the bad reviews for this branch, I have come to see that many others are disgusted by the treatment they have gotten from this dreadful person. I have had her ring me up a few times before and noticed her lack of customer service but yesterday marks the day of the worst service I have ever had. My sister and I were getting some ribs and kombucha for dinner. Denise was chatting it up with another worker. She didn't acknowledge us at all. She touched the packaged meat and stated that it was wet. Okay? Then she proceeded to stop and start cleaning the conveyor belt, get a plastic bag to hold the meat as she scanned it, then drape it over the checkstand. [Her phone rings, she lets it ring and says "Sometimes I just hate phones" and lets someone else answer it]. She scans our bottle of Kombucha. "It's all wet". I tell her there are manufacturers coupons on the bottles and ask if she could please scan them for me. "Can you get them for me? I don't like touching it 'cause it's wet". Are you serious?? Mind you she's carrying on a conversation with another worker the whole time, complaining about something or other. We pay and she sticks her arm out with the receipt without even looking at us. WORST Safeway!!! 2-3 cashiers open, ever at any given time!?! Try to get a hold of the Manager, always seems to be MIA.
