Generally, I really like this store, but I am fed up with the closing shift's habit of closing early. Three times in the past few months, I've had to make a late night run to the Safeway on Dewey, in Fair Oaks, the posted business hours are 5am to midnight, but the doors were locked at 11:50pm; the same thing again last night- as I approached the door at 11:49, two employees were locking the doors, I knocked on the door as they were walking away, they said "we're closed" I pointed to my watch and said "you're supposed to be open for another 10 minutes" but they just walked away. Two other customers were walking up, and said that you have to manually push the door open, which one of them did, as we walked in, a few employees angrily told us the store was closed, we were scolded again at checkout; it was 11:57 when I walked out with my items. Safeway has been my favorite grocery store for the past 20 years, but lately-not so much. read more

Due to the customer service I got today from Jen, I will NEVER shop at this store again! Jen was incredibly rude!! I asked a question about my just for you and she wouldn't even listen to me, she just said she wouldn't help me. Then she said I had to scan my debit card right away or she would cancel my transaction because she didn't like the noise the machine makes. She didn't even scan all my groceries so I didn't get to see if they were rung up right before I paid for them! I guess Jen's customer service skills involve bullying her customers. There was 10 customers in line and she never called anyone else up to open up. I thought Safeway's new policy was 3 in line is a crowd. Obviously not at this store! If you want to be treated like crap and bullied, this is the store for you. Be sure to go in Jen's line for shitty service! read more

This used to be my go to place but lately it has really turned ghetto. Homeless panhandlers along with plenty of garbage in the parking lots, shoppers look like your typical section 8ers...no shirts or shoes, or really dirty people, or tweakers, people with animals (no, not service dogs), EBT crowd in bathroom slippers, etc. You know the crowd. You wanna take a shower after shopping there...dont wanna catch Hep A or fleas, y'know. Go after dark at your own risk. read more

One of the few Safeway's that you can buy gas at and pretty good prices with your S-card. It's conveniently located on Madison and like most Safeway's has a decent selection, is usually kept stocked, and is clean. It's sort of a "utility" grocery store for all your everyday needs. read more

I've never reviewed a grocery store, primarily because they traditionally fall into the same category; fumble around trying to familiarize myself with they store layout, small wait to-check out, nothing crazy bad or crazy good -- until Saturday. First, for being Saturday it was going bad, just for me in general, some thing got screwed up resulting in tears and I was already of the mind-set that the day was going to be f''cked. I went into Safeway to grab a couple of odd items and pick up a prescription. I don't know if the staff had honed-in on how upset I was, but everyone was ridiculously friendly and personable. One of the deli attendants received me with a chipper mid-day greeting, asked about my day, wished for me that it goes smoother, a Stock Clerk passed me in the aisle, turned around looked me straight in the eyes and said, "How are you today?", the checker (whom also was the assistant manager, rang up my groceries lickety split and while I only went in there to grab a few items, it was about 175.00 later. He was friendly, joking (very appropriate), and super fast. I left Safeway with a different attitude then when I had arrived. I felt better. Thank you Safeway. PS I'm still totalling in love with being able to order my groceries from Safeway online and have them delivered to my dining room table -- its too cool. read more

Since moving to the neighborhood behind this store it has been my go to place to pick up groceries for dinner and such more often then normal, but we have lived close by to this store for over 12 years and I have periodically shopped here over the years. Today I decided since it was beautiful weather to take a walk instead of drive with my daughter in her stroller. At our old house I would do this often and head to the neighborhood Walmart where I never had any issues shopping with a stroller. Today I have never felt more uncomfortable at a check out in my life. Mind you I have also worked retail myself for over 10 years so I have plenty of experience with pos systems. Instantly when I walked up I could tell the woman working the self checkout was irritated I had items in my stroller, hovering over me and watching every item I scanned. These self check outs are some of the most sensitive check stands I have ever dealt with. Any way the computer kept saying to remove the item I placed in there even though everything was scanned. First she tried to argue that my diced tomatoes were not scanned, when I pointed them out she said "well it has to be something else because the other one came up as the brand" yes they were the same brand different types and they were the only diced tomatoes I got so there's that. Then later the computer did it again. I showed her the last things I scanned and she tried to accuse me of not scanning the $2 apple juice. I then had to point out yet again that not only did I already scan that but it was about 7 items prior to the notification on the computer. I'm not sure why the computer was being so glitchy but I hope her and the manager take the time to review the film and see that I in fact scanned every single I'm by stroller. Maybe she needs a refresher on customer service. I'll still be shopping there and this time of year with the weather I love the fresh air and exercise so I'll be in there often with my daughter in her stroller so I hope she can get use to it. read more

You need to take off that you're open 24 hours a day when you aren't anymore. I went there a few weeks ago around 2am and was able to pick up what I needed. I go there at crazy times because of my profession. Then last night I stopped by around the same time and all the doors were locked. On the right side entrance it said use other doors. So I walked over to the left side and the doors were locked. I knocked on the door and said why aren't you open and all he did was give me a blank stare and a cutting motion on his neck and said we are not open. I doubt I'll ever be back at this Safeway. Your hours are very misleading and I had to drive 15 minutes out of my way in hopes of getting some healthy food and has to settle with CVS next door instead. read more

This Safeway has a fantastic selection on almost everything. I typically can find whatever I need. Only complaint is the loooooonnnnggggg checkout lines. Never enough front end help. Oh and the absence of changing tables in the women's restroom is definitely horrendous for moms trying to run some grocery errands. read more

Ok, obviously Safeway is just your average grocery store, but man! This one gets crappier every time I go! Tonight, around 8pm, I waited in line for about 15 minutes because there was ONE register open and the self-check was PACKED! Now, I normally use the self-check, but the wait was just too long and you know how those things always freeze up and alert the non-existent staff that you removed a bag or tried to use a coupon... Anyhow, the reason why I never wait in a regular line is because of the HORRIBLE bagging. My first job was at Albertsons and we had actual training on how to bag! I'm very particular-OR NOT. Don't squish my bread, bananas or avocados and DON'T bag my shit so that it rips open! Whaddyaknow?! The dumb-dumb bagger put a 2lb bag of cheese, a box of butter, my bananas, cucumbers, AND avocados in one bag. Ok, so I guess that wouldn't be SO bad... IF HE HADN'T PUT THE BUTTER ON THE BOTTOM SO THAT THE BAG RIPPED OPEN WHEN I LIFTED IT FROM THE CART TO PUT IT IN MY TRUNK! The customers at this store are also a little less than pleasant. Yeah, just go to Safeway in Orangevale because its the only one that doesn't completely SUCK! read more

My husband was walking around the store with a full hand basket. He still needed a few items so he headed to the front to get a cart. A store associate was walking in and asked if he need something and my husband said he was thinking about getting a cart. He said "would you like me to get one for you?" and my husband said "no it's okay I'll get it." He walked to the doors since all the carts are out front by the door. As he approached the door a different associate that said he was a "manager" snatched the hand basket from my husband and said "get out, get out now! Leave!" My husband replied "what's going on? What do you mean?" He told my husband to just leave and he walked away with the basket. My husband walked out and then came back in for an explanation and the associate told him he was a shoplifter. He had not stolen anything and had not even exited the store. My 2 year old and I were at home waiting for for these groceries. I called the store and spoke with the manager, Brandon, who said he knew nothing of this event happening just moments before I called. So, I'm not sure who told my husband they were the manager. Brandon took my contact information and said he would give it to the store manager in the morning to contact me. I can understand being cautious for shoplifters, but my husband and I are regular customers. We come in there almost daily. All they would have needed to do is put my phone number in to see our activity. I was bewildered and shocked by this associate's attitude and lack of customer service. He embarrassed my husband and denied him services off of a suspicion of possible shoplifting that hadn't even occurred. My husband is a disabled veteran and would never shoplift. I'm not sure what kind of manager they have in the front who cannot even assess the situation and immediately goes to insulting and presuming inaccurate situations. No one asked if my husband was stealing or if he was going to purchase the items; they just kicked him out. We do not feel comfortable going back here and this is our neighborhood grocery store that we loved. read more

Horrible flower department!! Nobody is ever at the flower department. It wasn't my first time here and every time I come i have to wait for someone for at least 10 min. This last time I was in a rush and asked for assistance and no response. I asked the same chick again and finally she spoke to her microphone to get assistance. Finally I came up to her and she said it's gonna be 10 more min. Until someone will be done with there register! horrible!! I just left without stupid ballons! read more

The pharmacy staff is amazing. They have helped me several times when I was unable to reach my physicians office to renew my blood pressure medications. They, quite simply, did everything they could to help me. Their professionalism, tenacity and committment to providing the highest caliber customer service possible is rare these days, and it is very much appreciated! read more

I come here all the time on the way to work. I love getting a discount on gas and other items in store using my club card. I'm totally hooked on the new Just For U program, I even got a free 12 pk of eggs last night. The store is very clean and great customer service. read more

Long lines...disinterested employees and high prices. With Costco, Trader Joe's and Wal Mart close by I can go elsewhere and usually use this store when I am ina rush as it is basically across the street. As a former Safeway employee who loved the damn company it is hard to see this location suck so bad on employee moral and service and their prices get so high. There is nothing to make me want to come here. Only joy I get is the Hawaiian/Phillipino guy in teh meat dept who is kick ass and knows his job is service. Outise of that the employees are old and waiting to retiree of yuong and dumb as rocks. read more

This store used to be awesome. USED TO BE! It has steadily gone downhill with a lack of staffing, terrible management, over priced, no baggers (I might as well go to Winco) and an obstacle course in every narrow aisle. I don't know who at Safeway thinks it's a good idea to have crap in their aisles blocking stuff that you really want. It's dangerous, awkward and isn't going to get me to buy it. Rodney the manager is an ass. He let 42 people cool their heels while 2 checkstands with no bagging assistance and the self check out tried to keep up with demand. He was paged 6 times before he finally dragged his butt out of the chair to peek out the door. His door was open and I observed the whole thing while I cooled my heels in line. By the way this was during prime shopping time on a Saturday afternoon. I keep giving them a chance but I think I'm running out of them. read more

I have shopped at Safeway on and off for the last 40 years. Never in my life have I been in a store so bad. First, there is always something or several things that I cant find because they have run out or the usual is that the shelf has not been stocked. Its usually dairy items, but can be other things as well. Also I always made sure I checked the expiration date. There were items in the case that were almost expired. The produce is not all that great. I usually like to use their pharmacy, but I have had problems with them too. When you get a decent amount of prescriptions there every month, it allows the pharmacy staff to become familiar with you. At this pharmacy, that doesn't matter, they are not going the extra mile and since I was told that I could go to CVS and wait longer, I'm sure they are happy I'm gone. I am now willing to drive farther and pay more for my groceries, so I go to Raleys. read more

Have been doing a lot of business the past year with Safeway. I love the money I save on gas. I like their weekly ads. I have gotten some really good deals here. Also get a lot of the flowers from their floral dept. Their Pharmacy has been going downhill for a while. I finally dropped them about 6 mo ago, I am now going to a pharmacy that actually cares a bout me, and is thrilled to get my business. I no longer am told they don't stock this or that, so I have to wait until next week. Or that this time the same prescription I have had for 5 years they can not read the writing, and have to wait for Monday to call the Dr. How many times can I tell someone no locking caps. I tried calling to make sure items were filled and on shelf, and its like pulling teeth to get this guy named Mike to please go look. He gives me the well if they said it would be ready today, I'm sure it is. Well then WHY was it not filled when I got there? read more

This is a large store with the capacity to provide a good shopping experience. The butchers are excellent. Rubin is remarkable -- kind, patient and knowledgeable. However, on a late Sunday morning the store was not adequately stocked. Advertised products were missing. Little variety was present in popular provisions. Since many of us are limited to week-end shopping this was discouraging and frustrating. There are better chains which are well stocked on Sunday Morning . It is doubtful we will visit this store again on on any day. read more

I love Safeway so much BUT the reason for my one star today would go to the lady who works in self check out. I'm not sure of her name but she has long blonde hair with glasses. Literally every single time I have an issue with the self checkout machines, which I use quit often since I'm here buying things on my lunch break daily, she is oblivious to what is going on. Instead of helping the people in self check out she'll take customers and ring them up leaving the rest waiting on her. I'm sorry but the whole point of self check out is to SELF CHECK OUT and if I'm having an issue maybe the person your checking out should of went to an actual check out stand!! Today my card was unable to be authorized due to an issue with the bank, apparently everyone with this bank was having an issue. Instead of for-warning people that they might have an issue she lets the machine cancel my card over 5 times before opening her mouth to say anything. Please re-evaluate your workers Safeway because this lady SUCKS and makes self checkout a nightmare if there's an issue. read more

Did my usual shopping here as I have done for 2 decades when checking out I noticed feces on my hand this did not come in with me it was not on any product that I purchased and was not on the cart. Somewhere on or around the register someone or something left a present. I was given a paper towel and some sanitizer to clean my hands, but my point is they didn't close the register but continued to check customers out. I will no longer shop there! read more

Terrible. I had a horrible, humiliating experience at this store. Upon returning home I did the online survey per the receipt. I asked to be contacted. No word from them as of 3 days later. I actually drove out of my way to go to a store nicer than those in my immediate area. I will never again spend my money in this store. Sorry you have people steal from your store Safeway, but how about you don't block PAYING customers from leaving the store when your employees make an error and the cart wheels lock up in the doorway, so one can not move in or out. A quick apology would have fixed everything. Instead you have lost a regular, paying customer. There are plenty of other places I can spend my money...it sure will not be in your store anymore. The produce here has been horrible on several occasions including but not limited to bananas, potatoes, avocados, and even bread. All mold and spoil way too soon. I have seen bugs crawling around on produce on more than one occasion. Safeway in general has gone downhill and better step up to Whole Foods standards. The WORST customer service I have EVER had. Melissa was nice. She was awesome. But the blonde "manager" with her breasts hanging out was HORRIBLY RUDE. We had a $5 off coupon for a rug doctor. Melisa was having trouble making the coupon work, a manager said to just take the $5 off manually but Melissa couldn't figure out how so she called on a different manager for help. This manager (blonde lady) sent melissa away and then was very rude and denied the coupon. I had been there for 25 minutes and I didn't care anymore so I apologized for the inconvenience and cook the rugdoctor. My roomate attempted to return it this afternoon and alas blonde Lady says it isn't clean enough to return. (When we got it it was full of hair and dirty water still) we cleaned it out but my roomate was confused and brought it home. My boyfriend just tried to return it tonight and blonde Lady says it needs to be washed out with a hose and cleaned with solution. We don't have a hose. I have rented this thing 7 different times and NEVER had a issue like this. If I could have one wish in my life it would be to watch you lose your job, you rude aweful person. You have no idea what I've been through this week and to be so rude to me over a freaking rug doctor that is no sweat off your back?! What is wrong with you? Btw safeway it isn't legal to lock half of your doors and block them with carts before closing. If there was a emergency people can't get out and someone can sue you. read more

I shop there all the time. Butchers are great and so is the staff. Great produce section. Red box and Starbucks inside are a nice touch.

I am a Sac native, and been shopping at Safeways all over forever... I was used to my Carmichael store due to the fact have been going there for so long. I usually shop late at night and avoid the crowd. Since moving to CH, I chose to go to this one instead of the crappy Greenback Safeway, but a couple times have been met with rude employees. So... their mid-evening deli guys are in the back talking about their girlfriends, and the manager is clueless. I had a question about their deli special but NO ONE, not even the manager, knew just WHAT this after 5 deal included, WTF? It just seems like these people would rather be elsewhere and hate their job. Sad. I like my Safeway in Carmichael and I might just start making the extra 5-10 minute drive to go there now... WHY CAN'T THESE STORES DESIGN ALL OF THEIR LOCATIONS THE SAME WITH THE BREAD AND DRINK ETC AISLES IN THE SAME ROWS? It would make shopping sooo much faster? Bottom line tho it's the prices that I am going for, & the buy one get one free is always a winner in my book, and my Safeway card helps me save too... so, unless I feel inspired to drive all the way to Winco I usually go to Safeway... read more
