We managed to go to this store only one time on our visit to Estes, and that was one too many. The store was packed to the gills with people clogging the aisles. The selection was picked over and very expensive for many items. We waited in line for a long time as one man signed up for a card while he checked out. Not cool. On the advice of friends who had been here we did get their store discount card at the customer service counter to help with the high prices. You definitely want to bring most groceries with you if coming to the area. read more

Have always loved Safeway as a supermarket- and the Estes Park location is super great! For being so close to a national park, their prices are completely fair. Most impressively is their large selection of EVERYTHING (they even have a tropical fruit section)! Love this place and they have the cheapest gas in town. Just be sure to bring gloves in the winter if you want to use their Redbox for movie rentals! read more

We shop Safeway whenever possible, however, the Safeway in Estes park is run differently most likely because of the huge summer tourist season and this is the only grocery in town. This store has one very rude and wacko employee who we watch attack a customer while in the self serve check out. The machine was not working correctly so he came up and took this persons groceries away. She came back with the manager who was very apologetic. This employees name tag said Scott. So be prepared for a bad experience particularly if you run in to Scott. read more

Called the store at 7:00pm and ask if they had a specific product. The guy who took my call seemed perplexed but said he would check... I was put on hold. AND 45 minutes later, I am still on hold... Great store, great super hard working employees, and a positive attitude will help you through your visit. Yes lines do get outrageous, but this being the only store in a major tourism spot if course it's going to be busy so be prepared! A couple years ago when checking out at the Estes Park Safeway, we were told we could receive discounts and points toward discounts on gasoline if we applied for a "member" card. We completed the application and have used the card multiple times each time we visit Estes Park. We arrived last week Saturday and again shopped for our initial supply of groceries on Sunday, again using our card receiving discounts as before. Then Tuesday we went to the Safeway gas station to fill up. When I inserted the card Safeway a "invalid card" message was shown. I went in the store to ask what the problem was. The clerk told me the card didn't have enough points to allow a discount. We then went to the Safeway store and purchased a couple things we needed. The person at the register looked at our card and said our card wasn't one they accepted. We went the customer service desk to try to resolve the issue. The person in customer service said our card was no for use at Safeway too. We explained how this card had been provided to use by this Safeway store a couple years ago and how we'd been using it since then when ever we visited Estes Park, last time only two days ago. His reply was that the person who had helped us when we first were given the card with out a doubt been fired soon after that. He went on to explain how every clerk who had allowed us to use the card had surely been fired soon after each event. I knew that wasn't true because we had recognized a couple of them this week, still at work (thankfully). We did NOT tell hime that for fear he'd have them fired now. He did provide us with a new, "correct" card. All the points we'd earned are lost. This is the only sizeable grocery store in town and we've shopped there exclusively in the past but wish now the had at least one comparable competitor in town. This store doesn't treat its customers or employees very well based on our experience. With the approach this store's Customer Service personal take, we do not anticipate anything to be done regarding this but do be warned if you shop at this store. read more

Great selection of fresh fruit and meats. Newly designed and has all the foods you need and want for the week. For sure sign up for the store card to bring the prices back into line. Ok now for the bad side: this is one of two grocery stores in Estes, so it is always busy. They rarely have enough checkers so plan ahead for spending time in the checkout line. read more

Living in Estes Park I understand the limited parking and crowded store -- it's a tourist town, it comes with the territory. The store even expanded its deli and bakery areas recently. However, in doing so you would hope the quality of their ready-made deli foods, such as chicken tenders and wings, would improve with the new self service islands they invested in. Nope. These foods are often small, over-cooked, over-breaded and dry -- and this is how it is every time I come in. I'd rather drive 40 miles to Longmont's King Soopers for tenders that are much better prepared and much tastier. Maybe Safeway needs some real competition. read more

Was excited to see a salad bar go in with the remodel. But as a grab a tong full of lettuce I noticed that I should probably check the rest of the items on the bar. from rotten lettuce to what looked like a bunch of produce that really need to be inspected before offering it to customers, I was left with the notion that I will not be eating from this salad bar till either standards go up or someone gets trained. We are for Jefferson City, Missouri and there hasn't been one time (and we have been to Estes Park many times) that we were unsatisfied with the selection of fresh cut meats and other items offered at this Safeway. It is the first place we go when we get into town. I would brag about the fruit pizza but that might entice everyone to buy one while they in town and then there won't be any left for us when we get there :) I would suggest this Safeway store to everyone who vacations in Estes Park. read more

I wish that some competitor would come and blow this place out of the water because they are solely successful based on lack of other options. My husband went to purchase water 20 minutes before they closed this last Friday and the lights were off and some guy kept shouting at him that they "were closed". He tried repeatedly asking him if there were other places open in the area and all he said was "we're closed. Come back at 6am." When he related the story to me I chalked it up as a quirky, vacation town grocery store and thought nothing more. However when I got in to town on Saturday and we found ourselves needing to make another run to the market we chose the same location. This time 30 minutes before they closed. We gathered our goods and stood in a check out line 6 people deep while THREE, count them THREE other cashiers closed out tills, wiped down conveyor belts and CLOSED DOWN ALL OF THE SELF CHECKOUT MACHINES. Now, I don't know about you, but when I'm on vacation, and haven't seen my husband in a couple of days, the LAST place I want to be is waiting in line so that all workers can leave EXACTLY when they store is supposed to close. Now, before you decide that I am an irrational, inpatient brat that doesn't realize that workers like to get home to their families, please consider this: I worked retail for 15+years and I have maintained a job working with the public where I too would like to leave right when business hours are exhausted. But guess what? YOU DONT GET TO. Ever. Like, never. Even when you're really hoping you might, or your friends are hoping you can catch the tail end of the party their throwing. Closing shifts SUCK because they are unpredictable. To the extent that you would like to stay in business, to a certain degree, customers dictate when you leave. That being said, we weren't even in there after hours! I made a comment to one of two gentlemen who were counting tills and cleaning conveyor belts that there was a long line and asked if he could help. He let me know that the now 8 people deep line was the only option. Great. I stepped back in to line and griped to my husband about their wonderful customer service skills because they wouldn't open another register, to which (and this is when it gets so good...) a tall skinny lady with flour all down her pants glares at me unapologetically. I realize she is wearing the same hideous brown shirt as the workers and I instantaneously understand that she works there. She continues her glare and dares to say to me, "well maybe they aren't cashiers." At this point it's on and I say,"I would have thought that as well except for the fact that the man I spoke to said HIS LINE WAS CLOSED." She wouldn't drop it. She said, "I sure am glad I don't have such little patience, especially on my vacation." To be quite honest, I'm not usually at a loss for words, (obviously. ;)) but this chick had me floored. To be so brazen while wearing a uniform, in the store that you work for, talking to the customers that ultimately pay your paycheck had me frozen. I laughed sarcastically and said,"wow." You'd think she would have let it go, but no. She waited for two people to get rung up, then herself, before she started engaging the cashier and trying to pull him in to it saying things like,"there's one shitty person in every group." Mike, the cashier wasn't having it. He was a genuinely happy guy and it didn't seem to faze him. When it was our turn to be rung up we exchanged witty banter and pleasantries. He was the breath of fresh air in that weird-ass anomaly of business. It's been two days since our exchange and I honestly can not stop thinking about it. The level of unprofessionalism at this place is unparalleled. My wish is that a manager sees this review and is able to train his/her closing team on what I would sincerely hope would be the proper set of store policy and procedure. And if something isn't in place...maybe Mike can dream up a training program for this store. He seems to be their only hope. Bottom line, be sure to call the store and ask when THEY would prefer that you shop to save THEM the hassle of your business. read more

This is the most horribly managed grocery store I've ever been in. The other day it was PACKED with people and there were only two registers open... then one of those closed, so they were down to ONE cashier, and there were dozens of people waiting for the self checkout machines, several of which were out of order. I waited in line for half an hour to buy half a dozen items and everybody in line was angry and amazed that there weren't more cashiers available. They have 6 or 7 registers. Why would they only have ONE open on a busy afternoon in late June. I may schedule weekly shopping excursions to the King Soopers in Loveland (45 minutes away) just to keep my blood pressure from going through the roof. HIRE SOME MORE PEOPLE, at LEAST during peak hours in the summer... and keep those self serve machines operational! read more

I'm not real sure what all the complaints are about-this is pretty much the same as my Safeway at home. Same products, same price, almost the same layout. Granted its not a whole foods or trader joes, but its a pretty standard everyday grocery store with a decent selection and fair prices. However when we asked the manager in the deli section (a guy with a mustache) to warm up some food he said we should eat at a restaurant instead. Mix hundreds of tourists who don't know their way around this store, with a cramped space and lots of out of stocks, and you get a train wreck. Asked 3 different employees where the peanut butter was and they all told me the wrong location. Last insult was I paid for ice at checkout only to be told they were out afterwards. This is a great Safeway. Granted I'm from GA and don't have them there, but this place is terrific. I've been to 28 national parks and let me tell you having a place like this right outside the park is a godsend. They have just about anything you could need and then some. The food is great, the staff I've spoken with are nice, what more could you want? Have you seen the road in to Estes Park? It's more dangerous than Rainbow Road from Mario Kart! We went to the Safeway Deli for lunch out of desperation, when the first two places we tried in this strip mall (that had good Yelp reviews) were closed for lunch. (Who doesn't stay open past 2:30?) We had just gone on a 4-hour hike and were ravenous. The woman at the deli counter must have had a miserable day, because she was probably the rudest person I've met in awhile. Ignored us for 10 minutes (while she was standing behind the counter), snapped at us that the chicken breasts were frozen and she couldn't unfreeze them, ignored us a little longer, told us she wasn't ignoring us, and then... we left and drove 30 minutes to Loveland to get food somewhere else on our way to the airport. Not a good food selection, and that woman needs a hug, or something. read more

One of the worst grocery store experiences in my life! The store itself was not a problem, everything seemed clean and well-maintained. But once we were wanting to check out, the problems arose. There were only two check out registers open and probably six people in line at each of them. They kept paging for someone to open a new line, but no one listened. We had 3 items, so we went to the 15-items or less register. The couple in front of us had way over that, a whole cart full. Their bill came to $130! The man even said, "I know I have more than the 15 items..." To which the checker replied, "I take anyone who gets in my line." Thanks! After it took us more time to check out than to find our items in the store, we were out of there. Never to go back! read more

This was a great store with great selection. Great produce section and other normal grocery store items. The prices were good and with the Safeway club card the prices are even better. The bakery items looked nice and there were many things to chose from. There were many fresh produce items to chose from. Many fruits and veggies to chose from. The best part was the stock boy who knew were every item in the store was. He was a machine!!! The store was clean and pleasant. read more

Just wanted to give a big Thank You to Ken in the meat department. At a family reunion at the YMCA and have to grill steak for 40 family members. After talking about my situation Ken set me up with some beautiful Rib Eye steaks. He suggested to slice them in half horizontally so I could afford to cook a steak for everyone . The Employees are super amazing but those lines in the summer make me want to drive down the canyon for groceries even if my ice cream melts on the way back home. This is a nice (very expensive and crowded) grocery store for a resort town. However, my never-ending source of frustration is that things don't ring up at the posted price very frequently. Also, there are many in-store coupons that say "scan using the app"... then at the check out the discount you're supposed to get is rarely applied. I have to remember everything I scan, then have cashier verify and manually enter discounts for the items that didn't work. Every single time. Have written corporate office about this multiple times, but no improvements over the months. Feels like a scam when it should be a really positive thing (I love discounts and that's probably the only reason I bought the item that day!). read more

My Son & Daughter-in-Law had a very quick elopement ceremony at the Rocky Mountain National Reserve. I had to get a cake very quickly, the local bakery in town would not call me back or respond to emails. The Wildwood Inn suggested the Safeway Bakery. Kris was fantastic!! she saved the wedding (well the Mother of the groom) she had never heard of the naked wedding cake. And yet it turned out perfect!
