Very bad service while checking out at the liquor counter at 9:15pm on Jan 03 2024. The black woman at the checkout counter had tight braids and was yelling at the old man in front of me because he was being too slow and having trouble with the card reader. When it got to be my turn, I set my bag of items on the conveyor and she very rudely demanded that I take them out for her. I said "would you mind saying please" and she said "it's not my job to take things out of a bag. I'm not going to checkout your items until you do it." Then she said "A real woman would have done it." She claimed to be a manager. Clearly this safeway is being run by extremely transphobic people and I highly recommend avoiding this safeway as much as you can. Total ripoff!!!! I bought 8oz of Tillamoock Mozzarella shredded cheese for $4.79, compared to $1.98 at Winco last week. The 29.5 oz Heinz no sugar added ketchup was $9.99 compared to $5.59 at Target. Medium sized cooked shrimp were over $12/lb compared to Winco $5.99/lb. I live in Des Moines at Wesley Homes, only about a mile or so away. I will never go there again. Winco is about 5 miles away and well worth the drive. The greed is disgusting. They know that the only grocery in Des Moines is a dollar store. This is rampant price gouging. read more

Someone needs to wake up and get things together. I understand weather conditions affect things, but to forget half of a delivery order, say you will get it out by a certain time and and no delivery, or any other update is really unacceptable. Pros: Safeway hours are nearly all day (5am to midnight) Charging station outside for an electric car Bakery service is 5 star service! Cons: Seedy area, not the store's fault Closed midnight to 5am Safeway has always been pricey Self checkout attentiveness (see below) First off, the cons. I want to cover that 2 employees watched our light go on as we needed help. A third walked up, and for a solid 3 minutes, they ignored us. We were in self checkout. Just scan the card please so I can leave. I was getting uncomfortable as a line was waiting. -2 stars. Bakery - y'all are on pointe! Lets start with Joyce, our lovely cashier today, not only does she just dangle her mask off one ear, she does even try to hide it pulling it down under her nose like the rest of the employees there. But she also wont say Hi, tell you your total of your purchase and then yell at you to "slide your card to pay" Gosh Joyce your such a joy. Service by cashier, Sherie was exceptional. She left her position (there were no other customers waiting to be checked out.) She took us to the areas that should have had the ORCA cards. When they weren't to be found she decided on her own to continue looking while we did the rest of our shopping and found those cards which she had at the register on our return. Visiting from South Florida, I visited this particular Safeway as it was on the travel path to and from my hotel in Seattle, Washington. And on this day, it was was Cheep Cheep Chicken Monday. Having shopped for a few items to store in my hotel refrigerator, I ended up in the deli in search of something quick and easy to eat. After a few moments of "window shopping," a deli clerk by the name of Maggie inquired whether I wanted to try the 8 pieces of chicken at $4.99 - a bargain offered on Monday. Advising her that I was from out of town and did not have a rewards card, Maggie advised that she would give me the chicken for the posted price. Score one for the hungry people. I'm used to "rewards" shopping so I snapped up a few candy bars and cheese since Maggie had an extra rewards card behind the counter. This would save me a few bucks. Maggie advised that my choices were fried or baked chicken and that the baked chicken just came out of the oven. I took her advice on freshness and ordered the 8-piece baked chicken. Chicken was a bit on the small size but pretty tasty. I ended up eating 4 pieces for dinner and the other 4 pieces the next morning for breakfast. Cut up and thrown inside the french bread I purchased, it worked out okay after being microwaved for 45 seconds. Dining on a budget, so say Bill Lewis. Shay at the middle of the store register where the medications are has something wrong with her. I honestly think she needs to take a class on sensitivity training. All together I was in her line for 30 minutes. About halfway through this, I asked (in a friendly tone) if it was possible for someone from the front registers to come help at the other register next to her. She used the a horribly rude tone to tell me no and that she would be with us soon enough. After this, there was an elderly man who did not speak English well, trying to use his EBT card. She was very impatient with him. He was trying to explain what he wanted with gestures, and she told him multiple times that "he should not come to the store without someone that could speak English." You would think that as a minority herself, Shay would have some compassion for someone in this vulnerable situation. Finally it's my turn. I can tell Shay is very irritated that I asked about another cashier possibly coming to help, but I just stayed quiet. I was buying cough medicine which is why I had to go in this line. Shay asks for my ID. I had my wallet out, but I didn't have my ID in my hand. So Shay says: "You would think that if you asked for another cashier to come, you'd be ready with your ID." Ok...I didn't know I needed ID for the medicine. Sorry about that Shay. I talked to a manager about what happened. And Shay overheard and lied to try to cover herself. She said: "no, I meant that the guy that was holding up the line earlier should have had his card ready." Then she complained some more about him not knowing how to speak English. I sure hope Shay never has to live in a foreign country to see how hard it is for foreigners. I will be avoiding this Safeway. I don't understand how a person like this gets hired. How did she get through the interview process? She must have a switch she can turn on to treat people with respect...but, the switch was off tonight. read more

Safeway on 214th in DesMoines WA. this place is an absolute nightmare! Liquor and medication area all manned by one cashier- you can only buy these items in this section, but they also allow grocery carts of food to be rung up in this section. WIC checks, with recipients who don't speak English or don't understand the WIC or food card, requiring the cashier to run around the store to grab the correct bag of rice??? WTF? I stood in the line behind about 15 people, 30 minutes to purchase a 6 pack of beer. I was so frustrated I finally gave up, and went to the front of the store demanding to talk to the manager. long story short.. the liquor, beer and or OTC medications must be purchased in the designated, boxed area. there's no open lanes so the actual two cart grocery shoppers come to the 1 person liquor area; when asked how come the grocery shoppers couldn't use self check out.. response it's 15 items or less and that's the only cashier lane open. I'm done. I don't care if I have to drive 30 minutes to a decent grocery store, this Safeway won't get another dime from me. We have lived in our neighborhood for 15 years. They had two checking lanes open so I had to pick one and wait. And wait. And wait. God forbid you want something out of the locked liquor cabinets, which necessitates a 10 minute wait. Once you're finally ready to check out, that'll be another 25 minutes of standing in a line that snakes throughout the store to finally be greeted by rude and probably overworked cashiers, given the location seems perpetually understaffed and is presumably being run into the ground. This store is a sham. The store has unstocked shelves with boxes of items strewed about on the floor. Lately, there is rarely more than one cashier on Thursdays and she is in the less than 15 item aisle. I don't know what is going on with this store. Second, Safeway always sends me free coupons for items that are never at this store and the items that are on sale are never on the shelves. See the photo for milk, advertised at $.99. Had to buy Darigold at $3.69 instead. Is this a ploy? Lastly, I have seen homeless people living in the parking lot, people drinking boxed wine on the sidewalk on my way into the store, have had my bags stolen and been overcharged multiple times because the Just 4 U items do not ring up correctly. I stopped by looking for greenery for some cupcakes and the woman in the floral department was fantastic! So friendly and helpful. I can't say much as far as the store itself it's Under stocked and dirty. However, like most this was close to my hotel. I've been relocating to the area and the staff in the Pharmacy has gone above and beyond. They pulled my out of state prescriptions over helped me with coupons, due to job change and insurance issues. It's a huge gas station, & most of the time its usually cheaper to get your gas here, than at AMPM, which is some of the most inexpensive gas around. There's never a wait because this place has 16 pumps. All of which are usually in working order. I've never felt rushed here either. Overall, this is a great store. The staff is helpful and friendly they go out of their way to say hello. It's clean, well stocked, and has all the conveniences you would expect (Starbucks, US Bank, gas). This is solely for the African American lady in the bakery... I was first really upset when I called to inquire about getting a special cake made and the lady on the phone couldn't speak proper English and couldn't understand me... I was told that calling in was fine. After that call, I HAD to come in and talk to someone else in the bakery. I am SOO HAPPY that I did! I gave her an idea of what I wanted and even told her that I needed it super early for my daughters 1st birthday cake smash pictures... she made that her last cake the night before so I could pick up at 8am! THE CAKE EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS so much!!! I was blown away by how beautiful it is!! Thank you so much! And it was only $7.99 and tasted so good that my husband brought the rest home from the shoot and ate it!! Lol I can't remember her name but she did such an amazing job. Pros: +As Safeway stores goes, this one is one of the better ones. It's clean, good selection and way way convenient when you work in the area. Cons: -I don't know if it's on the part of the doctor's office or the pharmacy, but we've had historically bad luck getting prescriptions filled in a timely manner. -The deli food is SO salty! I do what I can to avoid the hot food section because you can taste how cheaply made the Chinese food and the made-to-go sandwiches are. It's hard sometimes, because there are far and few better choices in the area surrounding the airport. If you have the time, it's worth it to get a "build your own sandwich" just because you have more control of what's in it. read more
