This was my first visit to a Safeway in a long time. And, it was my first time stopping in to shop at this particular Safeway location. The store itself is located on the second floor. There are stairs, in addition to an elevator for patrons and employees, alike. While I found what I needed here, I would not rush back to shop at this Safeway. The lighting did not seem bright, and the layout of the store seemed bizarre. read more

I live about 6 blocks from the 5500 Bradley blvd store and shopping there is a challenging experience. They have so few people working at the store and very few registers open to push you to the self check . Last week at 10am I went to get a cake from the bakery. No one was there so I went to Customer Service and asked if they could please call someone to help me. After 10 minutes I asked the guy in the bread dept to help me out. He called the bakery person who had already left and said would return in 30 minutes to help me???? After about 5 more min of trying to get the bakery guy to help I asked him for a cake box and grabbed it by myself. This store is horribly under staffed at all hours. It's terrible except for the pharmacy which is great. read more

I generally have a good experience at this Safeway. I recommend parking in the lower parking level, although it has a stale cigarette smell. They have 2 EV chargers in the upper lot. The one thing that is a problem is carts. For awhile they never had enough in the store but they seem to have solved that. Now I keep having problems with cart wheels locking up when I go down one of the elevators. Weird. read more

I like this store--large selection, well stocked, usually not too crowded. However, the dining area always has a large number of burned out lights for months on end that never get fixed. There are several light fixtures on the wall of the dining area that are always burned out as well as several ceiling lights. Also the microwave appears to be permanently broken. It shouldn't be that hard to replace it and it would be much appreciated. Utensils are at the deli counter, not in the dining area. Store is on 2nd level, take elevator or stairs. Parking is at ground level and lower level. Close to CVS, Bradley shopping center with Strosneiders and Bradley Food and Beverage. Excellent deli counter and fresh bakery depts. read more

This is a review about the Safeway Pharmacy and the utter lack of help I've received from Safeway customer service. I went to Safeway pharmacy for flu and RSV shots. The pharmacist said that my insurance (CareFirst) does not cover the RSV shot. I called CareFirst customer service who said that my insurance definitely does cover the RSV shot and that the Pharmacist needs to call the Safeway Pharmacy helpdesk to find out what codes are needed to fix the problem. The pharmacy was very busy, so I left. Meanwhile I've called Safeway customer service, and the representatives have been unable to connect me to the pharmacy helpdesk. Safeway customer service is useless. My wife went today to get her flu and RSV shots and was told that CareFirst doesn't cover the RSV. I've been going to the Safeway phramacy for many years to get my vaccinations because the pharmacy has a private area for vaccinations. But I've had to waste so much time trying to get this problem fixed that I have no choice but to find a pharmacy that know how to transmit the codes required by CareFirst. read more

Way too generous with my 2 star review. Poor management undermines a good location. Todays problem was an unsupervised cashier who was clueless. She kept swiping bar codes that wouldn't register. 10 minutes to ring up 2 little creamers. Also, Never buy the milk. I had to return gallon containers twice, then I gave up. read more

Dissatisfied from my perception of the location. I opted to divert from my neighborhood Safeway to come here closer to work. The store seemed cluttered, cramped & visibly disorganized. The Produce was not inviting & the "fresh" / packaged food to go looked stale & picked over. The selection for natural, organic & vegetarian products are slim & the customer service was extremely lacking. The positive point of my first & only visit here, is the sale items I picked up on an impulse. Update--this store does sell Ivy City whitefish salad at the seafood counter. They have a serious light bulb problem. There are lots of burned out light bulbs, especially in the dining area, which makes the store seem really dark and hard to see small print. They need to an end to end lightbulb inspection and replace all the burned out ones. It is especially hard to see for vision impaired people such as myself. Nice layout, somewhat smaller selection than Rockville Pike, but it's an older store. read more

If I could 0 stars, I would. This store has the worst management I've ever seen in my life. The store manager, LouLou is never in the store or around. She's "always" in a meeting no matter what time you ask for her. I usually park in the basement parking lot and always see the " managers" their while the store needs them. The sales tags are always wrong. The meat department/seafood are the only helpful people in the store. The deli department i wouldnt buy anything from unless you're ready to die. read more

The worst store in terms of customer service. Don't they train employees in common courtesies? I've recently moved here from northern CA where I was a loyal Safeway shopper. Not so here. Last time I shopped there, I asked the checker to throw away a small wrapper. Her response: "What you want me to do with that?" Today, I decided to give this Safeway another try. When checking out, I politely said "Good afternoon". No response. When she finished ringing me up, I said "Thank you very much". No response. She does not want to approach nor touch the screen as it has been normally done elsewhere. Why? Because I was not wearing a mask? I don't know. If that's the case, SHE SHOULD NOT BE WORKING THERE, simple. She was another example of the ignorance and unwillingness that people have to put up with living in Washington DC. Responsible is Safeway who does not seem to train its people (Giant is no different) on 'Customer Service' properly, even at a minimum. A horrible experience, no less. And I hope Safeway goes down. Can't wait for Wegman's to come to town to justifiably destroy this horrible supermarkets and its nasty people. I am STILL angry and will avoid this gulag. This Safeway is a great place to shop! The store has been updated with a beautiful deli and produce section, new coolers and freezers throughout the store. The staff is very helpful and polite. The people who shop there are pleasant and courteous as well. The well designed covered parking area is spacious and convenient. read more

Their produce tends to be more okay than not, and overall inventory is a far cry better in quality than the Safeway by the Metro... hooray for canned Taste Nirvana coconut water with pulp. Layout is reasonably logical: bread and deli to the right, produce and most other refrigerated goods to the left, meat/seafood in the back. They don't have all the meat cuts I fancy, but bulk deals and clearance deli items are nice. Cheap bagels but must be eaten within days. Service counter hours favor peak traffic time. Shelf restocking happens in the last hour before midnight close. I'm only bothering to write this one for the fantastic staff. Cashiers never complain about my fistfuls of coupons on top of Just For U savings, or strict aversion to taxed bags. (New product mailer coupons for locals!) While crippled I received two offers of help between the checkout to parking garage. Deli counter guy had great spatial awareness-- I've seen bartenders with less of an idea of who showed up first! Super nice about offering multiple sample tastings, checking slice thickness and weight, exchanging choices, and introducing me to a hearty bone-on ham. read more

Now that I've used the grocery store on the regular I'm a little more aware of the some of it's chronic flaws. The produce section could use some work. I don't know how many times I go to grab some onions or apples and the selection is pretty beat-up looking. There also seems to be a general lack of caring about certain aspects of the store. Like walking in and finding zero carts available. Why? Because they're all out in the parking lot. There weren't any when I walked in, and when I left an hour later they were still all out in the parking lot. Lastly, on almost every trip I make, there's some item that rings up higher than labeled/advertised. I'm sure the folks at the customer service desk refund whatever the difference is, but by that point in my shopping trip, I just want to go home and don't feel like waiting to get a $0.50 refund. read more

As a former employee I do not recommend eating from the deli at all. They sell expired food and take old stuff off the shelves and mix it to serve customers in the hot bar. The manager takes the rotisserie chicken from the warmer, puts it in fridge then next day puts them back in warmer changes the date and sell them. He continues to keep old products on shelves and the store manager knows which is why customers have came to me and another employee and said they have gotten sick . The cold case is full of old things he finds off shelves . He changes the date on the sandwiches and resells them . The cheeses and meats could be out of date but when no one is looking he changes date. The deli is trifling and straight nasty DO NOT EAT THERE! The way the store manager treats people is ridiculous. Everyone in that store is unprofessional and it's a lot of favoritism. They are ungrateful to the workers they do have. They all lie and sneak around. a few pics I have attached are what was on the shelf i seen about 3 weeks ago. The manager doesn't do his job but yet they keep him around to get ppl sick. They do not use soap to wash pans they strictly rely on the dish washer which is half broke. If me and the other girl didn't wash the pans they would always have food from day before on it and they still try to cook with it like that. read more

Before heading out to Washington D.C., my girlfriend and I stopped by this Safeway to pick up some items we might need to prepare for the Fourth of July celebration. The Safeway was well-stocked, clean, and easy to navigate. Prices were on par with other places I've been too. There's also free two-hour customer parking underneath the building which is super convenient. read more

I love this store. The pharmacists are very good. Once I was looking for a product and a manager told me he wasn't getting it in anymore but he kept boxes for people who asked for it and gave me one. He was really worried about not being able to stock what he needed. And there's a Starbucks inside. And the deli makes great sandwiches. read more

I have not been to many Safeway stores. My daughter who lives here wanted to stop after having lunch in Bethesda. The layout seamed crowded and reminded me of a dollar store. The produce section was smaller than the Safeway she normally goes to. At the deli I was surprised the man slicing the cold cuts did not have a net covering his beard with a beard net. He did have a hair net at least. The cold cuts were also not sliced and placed in layers but balled up in the plastic bag like several wads of meat. The check out person was clearly sick. Glad he had gloves on and always coughed on the other side of the register but management should send a sick employe home. I believe he asked me if I had bags but my daughter said that he said we needed to bag our own groceries. I have been spoiled by Publix and Whole foods so I may be a bit spoiled. read more

I gave them a chance before I leave a bad review. But seriously train your employees! 1. Went with my son who's 6 year old, a male employee was pushing carts and ran right on him, the guy looked at him, then continuing with his task...... My son was so confused looked and me then looked at the guy, then looked at me again. I called him out then he apologized to my son, from his response though, he definitely knew he hit my son with us cart. Manners! 2. Again, went with my son, self checkout line because they only had one register open 11 AM on Friday. Their kiosks had added security recently maybe due to lack of open register, more people uses the self check out. Now when you scan something, if it's too light weight and the machine can't sense you had put it on the bagging area, it would ask for assistance, so the second time it happened when I scan the cilantro and it can't sense that I had put it on my bag, I was getting pretty annoyed...... then here comes this lady with the visor, looked into my bag, asked me in a very condescending tone, that if I had rang my bread, I pointed at the machine and went "yeah, it's over there." That's all I said.... she went "calm down! Ok? I know how to use the machine, it rang for a reason, ok? ". So..... she asked me a question, I answered the question, then she implied that I try to steal the bread and that she knew how to figured it out...... after I told her to look through my bag, and count the items to prove her wrong, she refused then walked away........ Advise, take your money, go to Whole Foods or giant, they are not the only one there, and should learn to treat a customer with respect. read more

Since the old Georgetown store closed, this location has gone from bad inventory and service to decent. They are working hard to improve. Great location and very friendly just for u discounts make it a convenient shopping destination but still a bit boring and dry. Solid. This Safeway has its act together. When you compare to the Giant down the street it's like going to heaven. (Seriously, how are they in business?) Even with the parking below, this location makes things work. Escalator up and then elevator down with your groceries. Safeway's staff is first rate. Very helpful. This is a smaller grocery than the mega-stores you find out in the far flung burbs. (Does Bethesda still count as Burbs, or is it just the outskirts of the city?--guess it depends on perspective). But I like this location a lot. If you remember several years ago when this was a 1960's era location with little parking and crumbling infrastructure you might feel like things are soooo much better. Given this, I have NO idea why people shop down the street at the big, new, Giant on Arlington? This Safeway has a reasonable selection of everything, and it's rare that I am can't find things. On two separate occasions the meat guys have called me later in the day to tell me they got what I needed. The Pharmacy is first rate with little line. (Giant Pharmacy is like traveling back in time to the old Soviet Union--line up and wait forever! I'd rather be sick). The Safeway APP is great, and I think their prices are as good as you will find in the area on most things. This location does a good job keeping the store neat, and the shelves stocked. read more

It was very disappointing to find that this Safeway didn't sell Challas for Rosh Hashana. This was surprising especially for their Bethesda flagship store. I asked if they would call their other store but they didn't have the number handy. Eventually they found it but they too didn't have Challas. Was Safeway sleeping on the job? - Absolutely! Extremely s. l. o. w. Plenty of employees working, but only two working a register. I only had a couple of items (mostly loose fruits and vegetables) and the self check is always a hassle with them. So asked for an express register to be opened. No luck with this apparently confusing request . After several minutes I went down the block and to Giant. It was three times as busy with twice as many registers staffed, and I was in and out in less than three minutes. I should have gone there first. I think even the Bethesda Post Office would have served me faster than Safeway (and it has been closed for years). read more

Needed help scanning an item at self checkout and no one came to help so had to leave it. On my next trip there was one lane "open" but no one was at the register to check us out so walked to self check out then the lady told us to go to her register so we started walking there then this old guy with a cart hopped in front of us and the cashier didn't acknowledge that we should be first. So back over to self checkout it is. You have one job and you aren't doing it. read more

I go to Safeway regularly to grab the groceries/household items that I can't get at Trader Joe's, and I've had a decent experience for the most part. A few things I've noticed, however, during my visits: 1) the self checkout counter is a pain in the neck, with the machine constantly saying "please wait for assistance" for no reason, and it takes a while until one of the staff members come to you for help. 2) the seafood is NOT fresh!! we tried to get littleneck clams once and had to put them back because there was a putrid smell coming from the clams. 3) you need to check for expiration dates on the items because sometimes they leave things that have past expiration dates on the shelves..we bought a chobani yogurt once and realized when we got home that the expiration date had already passed. So shop with caution and it'll be fine. read more

Safeway needs to up its game at the self-checkout stands. The machines repeatedly shut down/require assistance for no reason and ask about "bags used" over and over, notwithstanding your "using own bag" selection. I know, it's a review for a chain grocery store. But as any DC area resident knows: not all grocery stores (even among the same chain) are created equal, and this one's nice. It's a big store, so the selection is nice and varied, and everything is clean. The layout is pretty intuitive, so you don't waste too much time trying to find what you need. I hate grocery shopping, but I don't mind coming here. The Redbox is an added bonus. read more
