Not adapted for topographic impaired. Up a very steep hill on Wilson blvd from Rosslyn netro bicyclists have to walk up their bikes

Selection: Average Prices: Average Service: Horrible With Harris Teeter and the Georgetown Safeway each within 3 miles, I don't see any reason to bother going to the Rosslyn/Courthouse Safeway if you have a car. I still went there on occasion just because it was the closest store to me, until the customer service finally pushed me away. They overcharged me for 2 tubes of toothpaste. Whatever; shouldn't be a big deal. Cashier Geraldine was courteous and asked me to bring her the price tag. Not unreasonable. After I did that and verified the correct price, she sent me to Manager Edgar who was the only person who could correct the mistake. Edgar said, "Come around," then a minute after I did that he said, "Wait in line." Those 5 words were the extent of his customer service skills after *his* store mischarged me. I'm obviously not going to wait in line *again* just to get a few dollars back (although maybe I would if Edgar showed any decency). I'll just take my business elsewhere. Fortunately, there are better options in the area. read more

The only reason people shop here is because Rosslyn is a designated food desert. That means there is a shortage of grocery stores in Rosslyn, and believe me, the management and employees of this store know it. The lines are at least 20 people deep everyday after 5 PM, yet they refuse to hire more cashiers. And I won't even go into detail about how absolutely filthy the store is. I'm honestly thinking of starting a Flickr group devoted to all the dirty corners and shelves of this Safeway. The vegetables are awful and the sandwich shop makes one sandwich every 10 minutes (PS...you could actually take the next person's order while the other person's sandwich is cooking...just a tip). So what else can you say about this store that hasn't already been said. You shop here because you have to. I'm really surprised Safeway HQ doesn't do something about this store. read more

Safeway - Mmmm dried chicken blood! - Grocery Near Me - Arlington, Virginia

Renovations are complete. There is now a fish counter (no longer are we limited to salmon) and a larger meat selection. There is a salad bar and a hot bar (mac-n-cheese, varieties of wings) and even a bakery! I don't have to buy a whole package of hamburger buns when I want just two. There is self-check, but a few of the good cashiers seem to have remained as well. The store seems more welcoming with the new doors and there is a Starbucks right inside. Yes, it is still subterrainan, but it is airy and bright and at last a real store! read more

This place has gotten so much better over the years. I used to only run to this store every now and then for convenience and walk to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's further away for my "real" grocery shopping, because what other reviewers have said was true: you would find expired food on the shelf, the produce was sad, the lines were excruciatingly long (because, I think, they were continually understaffed), and it didn't have much selection or a bakery. Now, they have a bakery! Plus lots of self check outs machines, more staff, and a more expansive selection of products. The renovations has refreshed this store in a way it really needed. The staff have always been really friendly and helpful, especially Mr. Gary. I'm glad the store now better matches their quality of service. read more

Savings Savings Savings....if you are a club member, and I am not. I wanted to grab a few items that I forgot and that my wife needed and they had them but of course I would have saved more money. I did like the prices at the end of my ring out but it would have been nice to have had the club pricing. There is parking underground for people utilizing the market. I liked the deli and a pretty good selection in the deli, I ate great. Let's keep up the good work I will be back. read more

I think this Safeway survives because its the only affordable grocery store within miles of both the Rosslyn and Courthouse Metro stops. The only other grocery store near by is a Whole Foods in Clarendon and they're too expensive. I don't have a car so I'm not going to walk 2 miles with groceries or pay $4 round trip on the metro just to get food. The selection here at this Safeway is poor. I regularly grab lunch from the Safeway near the Waterfront Metro stop, where I work, and this location pales in comparison. The one on the Waterfront has a hot bar, ready to go pizzas, and an ample stock of frozen, non-perishable, and produce items. This location seems to be out of stock of half their inventory. Not only that but there only seems to be about 3 staff in the store at one time on the weekends and only one of them is manning the checkout line. The prices are certainly decent but that doesn't make up for the poor quality of service and product. I'm lucky I can hitch a ride with friends or family to a Harris Teeter, otherwise I don't know what I would do for food... read more

Safeway is convenient if you live in Rosslyn. Sure, I agree with other folks that this store does not carry everything you need - such as TJ's or Whole Foods but it is affordable and you get what you need when you are hungry. They don't carry the fancy stuff - but they do carry a variety of yogurt brands such as Skyr, Chobani, Siggi's as well as breakfast foods such as cereal, granola bars and other junk foods when you need it. I would say in general, they carry a variety of brands for lots of frozen foods, dairy, chips, bread, toiletries (shampoos/conditioner), even condoms and lube if you don't want to go to cvs or target in the area - Though if you do want to get it there, they don't have self checkout counters (fyi). I would say though the fruit (strawberry, black/blueberries) and some other produce aren't as fresh but apples and nectarines are. The workers (Gary) and some other cashier ppl are quite friendly and nice. They will let you know where things are placed. They do not carry nuts, and other stuff you want to find such as at a Whole Foods. I come here and gave it 4 stars because of the convenience and that if you don't cook often (like me), then this is a great place to get all your frozen foods, snacks and dairy products, even steel cut oatmeal - I'm a fan! GREAT place to stock up on BREAKFAST (beverages and already made food for the lazies). read more

The Safeway checkout experience at this store is so miserable I will never go there for general grocery shopping again - will only pick up the things not available at target across the street. The self checkout machines are terrible. I've used self checkout machines at targets and other stores for years and never had a problem. This one requires me to call someone over four times the last time I tried it. I was almost in tears asking - what am I doing wrong? The lady (who was nice and patient) just shrugged and said he machines were difficult. But if you have more than 15 items -- that's the only option. The only human check out lines are express only. I opted to go through those and get the totally justified utter disgust from my fellow shoppers - I had two big bags full of groceries. But there is no other choice. It's clear this Safeway doesn't care about people buying more than 15 items and certainly doesn't care about the customer experience at checkout. read more

I had to run in there the other day to pick up groceries for the week, so needless to say I had a pretty full shopping cart. Lo and behold, even though the store was crowded, there was only one register open, and it was the express one (15 items or less). There is no self checkout so I'm stuck paying for all of my stuff at the express checkout, making a bunch of people with only a few items wait. The line was so long that even if I had let people with only a few things cut around me, I would have been there all day. Ridiculous! read more

Visiting this weekend from SoCal. Very appalled at the lazy , sorry ass attitude of the cashier. After all she has a job because we shop there, she was the worst ! read more

I've shopped in Safeways all over the US and in the UK and this is by far the worst I've found. Dingy, poorly stocked, and way over priced. Most Safeways have friendly staff who are eager to help out. But here their goal seems to be finising their conversations or cutting in front of you while you walk the aisles. On the plus side, the location can't be beat. I only wish there were an alternative nearby. read more

From a tourist's weekend view I liked the little store.. it has just what I needed, parking was free on the weekend with no validation ticket needed, not bad prices... beer choice was decent if you need it lol.. nothing really bad to say like I made note I was a tourist but for those that live local it may be a whole different type of store based on prices, selection needed on a daily basis.. Tip - A quick walk down the street from the Hyatt Hotel. read more

Horrible selection of produce, which always makes me question whether they'll have the other items I need. If you have another choice of grocery store, I would suggest the alternative. read more

Extremely unprofessional staff! They need to get a class in customer service - the cashiers do not even greet you when you are walking up to pay. I always say "hi, how are you" and so many times they do not even acknowledge that they have a customer in front of them! (they say nothing and do not even look at you). And once handing over the receipt, their head is to the other direction and you just have a hand sticking out. Customer-service at a NEW LOW! Unfortunately, I live in Rosslyn and sometimes I still go to this Safeway. But ONLY because of geographical convenience. I try to go more to Trader Joe's or Whole Foods further up the road. read more

It's in a good location, but I would avoid going here if you have other options. Pros - Convinient location for getting groceries if you work or live in Rosslyn. -It's the only grocery store in Rosslyn. Cons -Lack of variety. -Long wait times to buy food. Several of the checkout lines are closed, and the cashiers are slow. -Store is dirty. -The layout of the store is poorly designed. There is a lack of space behind the checkout area, so the lines are often forced to block the aisles. However, there is plenty of open space in other parts of the store. read more

Caution! Check the expiration dates on the lunch meat. The date on the meat had expired 2 weeks previous. Walking down the bread isle, there were loaves of bread out of their packages. (See picture) Because this store was convienently located to my hotel it was my only option. As long as you're mindful of expiration dates you should be fine. As for other comments made about Safeway being in the basement, that is quite normal for the area. That's just part of being big city living. read more

Safeway - Open bread packages - Grocery Near Me - Arlington, Virginia

Long lines again after work. This place never seems to understand that people go to the grocery store after work, like maybe they should open another check out lane from 5 to 7:30? You think? And no WiFi anymore. Sigh. read more

Dear Safeway Corporate Masters, If you are reading this message, please send the food safety inspectors over to this location before you get sued. This store regularly stocks / sells rotten, moldy and expired produce and meat products. I've seen moldy strawberries (regularly), potatoes with tubers growing out of them, rotten clementines, rotten kiwis, cheese that is over a month expired, and peaches that are swarming with flies. A number of the staff appear to hate their jobs, and considering the state of the store, I would too. You can expect ridiculously long lines, and almost nothing is ever in stock when you need it. In conclusion, the only reason to shop at this location would be sheer desperation or laziness, because every single grocery store in the surrounding area (and even every other Safeway) is far better than this one. read more

I love safeway and this is probably one of their worst locations that ive ever seen. Routinely incorrect temperatures for temperature sensitive product. Weird stuff with inventory. Expired product on shelves. Broken seals. Popped bags. Indications of tampering with product. Doesnt look like its had any real renovation or clean up in decades. Too bad really. Could be making a lot of money considering its location isnt too bad. read more

I have never written a negative yelp review but the experience I had in the produce department was just too much. I shop early in the day and am used to not having no saleable produce to choose from. (You can go to Whole Foods down the street and as they open, everything is full and fresh) Today I needed 3 items in produce, two of which were only a few garbage quality on display (corn and mangos). I was told by the very unpersonable employee to come back later. I finally said to him, after many times shopping there why is there never any saleable produce in the morning. He actually said to me "WELL, JUST DONT SHOP HERE!" Can you imagine an attitude like that when dealing with the public? read more

FIRST THE GOOD: There is a very sweet young man, Carlos, who works here. He's very helpful and courteous. NOW THE BAD: "Tasha" (sp) was so rude to me that I was compelled to spend my Sat. a.m. on Yelp instead of starting a much-needed breakfast. WHAT HAPPENED: I just moved to the area for a job as a reporter in Arlington. I moved here by myself. I don't have a car, and took the bus all the way to Safeway to get quite a bit of cash back. Why? Because my hotel, which is very expensive, offers a discount if one pays cash. As I am struggling to save for 1st/last on an apt., deal with oral surgery costs, etc., I want to save money. When I arrived at Safeway I asked Carlos if I could go back thru the line multiple times to get cash. He said he thought I'd be ok. I should have been explicit about the amount i needed. The point is, sweet Carlos was allowing me to go back through, then Tasha caught wind of this and spat: "Sixty dollars is the max, M'AM!" On the machine, it asks how much one wants, 60.00 is the highest shown then it says or OTHER! I had chosen OTHER to get my previous amounts of cash back. This woman was so brash, so rude, with an attitude that said I was trying to rip off the store rather than having spent nearly $100 of my hard-earned new reporter dollars there. She should not be in this position. Management needs to reprimand her and praise Carlos. I am reposting on Twitter. Note: I used to work at Barnes and Noble. I would never have treated a customer this way. Or any human being. read more

Horrible customer service! I walked to aisle where beer and wine is located.. As I picked up three different bottles of wine, the manager walked by on her phone, saying she was hungry. After not finding what I wanted to select, I walked towards the exit doors. The manager came running at me screaming "STOP! STOP!" I froze with my hands showing her what I was holding, which was as starbucks clear cup and a white plastic shopping bag. After she glanced at me, she yelled at me "LEAVE". Very unprofessional and perplexing. read more

I am starting to wonder if perhaps this Safeway is part of some secret federal government experiment to test a population's willingness to eat expired food sold by rude staff in a subterranean concrete hole guarded by homeless people. There is no reason on earth such a prosperous neighborhood should suffer from such a ghetto grocery store. This place looks and runs like it's managed by someone with a meth problem. It's dirty, disorganized, and while maybe not dangerous, creates a peculiar sense of discomfort. Come to think of it, it'd be reassuring to find out the government is secretly running test on us via the Rosslyn Safeway. Anything would be better than the truth: that this place is a complete dump that deserves to be pushed into the Potomac, floated south into the Chesapeake, pushed east into Atlantic, then north up to Bayonne, New Jersey where it could be beached and reopened in a more suitable home. This place is so bad that I actually took some friends from out of town there to show them this nightmare. Smithsonian? White House? Arlington Cemetery? This was at the top of my "show the visitors" list because it is such an experience. Perhaps next October they can put a few pumpkins out front, pretend it's a haunted house, and charge admission. PROS: location, check out woman with too much eye makeup is super friendly CONS: manager is obstinate guy who won't sell you anything without a Safeway card and appears to have no assistants to help get said card, outside littered with cigarettes and homeless people, parking is a mystery, carts look like they survived both Iraq wars, produce selection looks like it was put out during the first Iraq war. In summary: come for the experience, but wash your hands afterwards. read more

I despise this palce. I only go here when I am in dire need of a roll of quarters to do laundry. Even getting quarters becomes a task because there is never anyone in the Customer Service room. I decided to give it another chance after the renovations but while it might look better, the customer service experience still is disappointing. I tried to purchase milk that was on sale and when I pointed out that it wasn't reflected during check out I was given attitude. The woman bagging my groceries was kind and went with me to get the sign. It took three people all yelling at each other to finally honor the price. They were incredibly rude and told me "you're wrong but we will honor it" all while holding the sign that stated it clearly. Management here needs an overhaul! read more

Every time I leave here (and I only come back because it's the closest grocery to my apt) I truly feel like I need a meditation session because I'm always angry and frustrated by the abominable service. This is the most miserable little grocery store. They were sold out of practically everything when I went there one day after work to pick up a few neccesities, no skim milk, no eggs, and the deli was closing at like 6?!?. Unfortunately and I'm sorry to say that this is the worst safeway I have ever seen.I live in Rosslyn and I think I pay a lot of money to afford living there and in return we have the worst safeway in the area with over rated prices and bad customer service and quality control.Yesterday I waited literally 30 mins to cash out a yogurt pack where there was only one chaiesr and more than 15 people waiting in line..I have complained to the company before and nothing happened..we in rosslyn deserve better than this crap. read more

Not once in the past 3 years have I gone to this Safeway and not been overcharged for at least 1 item. I constantly have to read over the receipt--usually its the meat items (the 2nd biggest culprit is cleaning supplies). The price printed on the item will say "3.09" yet you find a charge for $4.50 to $6 on your receipt. And it's not messing up the Safeway card--I use that. Their tags are just wrong and get scanned at a higher price that what is printed on them! It's almost criminal that it happens so often--I wonder if management purposefully overcharges on items to make a bigger profit? Outside of corruption, I can't think of another reason that a store would ALWAYS mischarge me for items. When I talk to management they always act dumb and act like it's a big pain that I'm asking to be paid back for the amount they overcharged me. On top of that, the produce is disgusting--wilted, covered in fruit flies. The staff is friendly at least. Thats the only positive thing about this store. I shop at Whole Foods and Trader Joes now unless I'm desperate, which sucks because this safeway is 2 blocks from me and the other two are over a mile walk away. I'd rather shop somewhere of higher quality that doesn't always overcharge me though. read more

When the best things you can say about a business is that it has a good location and the fact that it is the only real grocery store in the vicinity? Oddly configured (really, did the designer really think there would never be lines!?) and oddly supplied and organized, this really is the place of last resort, where I get stuff (unavailable at the 7-11) to last me until I can find the time and energy to go a real store. read more

This is the only time I have ever wished for negative points on Yelp. And while service tends to be completely absent except at the checkout (where, to be fair, they are generally agreeable enough) the service is really the least of the problems. This place is a hot mess. They don't call this "Soviet Safeway" for nothing. As you descend into the underground, cavernous concrete structure (stark brutalism by even Rosslyn's humble standards), you are met with intense yellow signs for Shingles vaccines all over the place. Whoever considered that to be a major selling point for the average yuppie Arlington customer may want to rethink that strategy. Once you get inside, it's not any better. On a given weekday they will be out of staples like eggs or milk, and heaven help you if you choose to shop on a Saturday or Sunday. Or have any sort of restrictive diet like gluten free. Or have specific varieties of fresh produce on your list. I've gone in search of kale only to find the remaining leaves moldy and limp. And avoid their seafood, especially if it's on sale. Making the mistake of purchasing bad seafood once was enough for me. More than individual lapses though, the biggest issue is that it is just plain depressing. You leave feeling drained and unsatisfied. Inevitably items on your list were not found and regardless of when you went you had to wait in line, since only two of the registers were open. Why hasn't this place received a complete overhaul yet? read more

Quite literally the worst Safeway I've ever been to. The store is always understaffed, making the checkout process a nightmare. The produce section is typically lacking as well. I often end up paying a little more at the Target across the street. I really hope a new management takes over. read more

I dread coming to this Safeway. I live in the area, and greatly prefer making the trek up to Trader Joe's in Clarendon. I only go to Safeway if I need something immediately. While the renovations definitely improve the store, it is still difficult to find things. The produce is mediocre at best (my apples are always bruised), everything is overpriced and it's difficult to find items. Moreover, the cashiers (with the exception of a couple) are not helpful and extremely rude. read more

I've been going to this Safeway for about four months now, and only use it to pick up a few items in between when I do my complete shopping, which happens elsewhere. Up until two weeks ago or so, this Safeway did have what one reviewer referred to as "the saddest produce section in all of the US." I don't know if they've been reading the reviews here lately, but on my last two visits the fruit section was completely stocked, nicely ordered, and the fruit itself didn't look like it had been run over twice before being placed out for purchase. That said, it still remains for me an "in-between full shopping" stop as it has an overall limited selection. read more

This location wasn't that bad in my opinion. Though this is a much smaller space than I'm use to in comparison to other locations, I had a very pleasant shopping experience here. I must have picked the perfect time or something because I went on a weekday after work and the lines weren't long at all. I took my time and perused the aisles, waited for the pharmacist to fill my prescription, moseyed my way up to the check out line and found myself in the number 2 spot - not bad at all! I had no issues whatsoever. They had everything I needed in stock, the fruits and veggies looked pretty fresh/safe to eat and the meats and seafood all looked fine - no signs of old, rotting food items anywhere. Though I agree with one of the other yelpers, the aisles could be wider...but I didn't have too much of a problem with it. The cashier was friendly...she greeted me with a smile. Had no issues getting a grocery cart either. Can't really comment on the parking situation as I walked to and from the location. All in all, a good, convenient place to grab a few grocery items and/or adult beverages (beer/wine). Pharmacy was cool too. Happy shopping! read more
