The only reason I use this Safeway is because of its convenient location, but truthfully, it's a very subpar grocery store. I regularly bring home bags of apples or oranges only to find that one or more of the bunch is moldy or rotten. The size of the store means that the number of food options are limited to start with, and I've had multiple occasions where I struggled or failed to find something I was looking for. The bathrooms, should you need to use them, are all the way through the back of the employee prep area, poorly signed and not very clean. All in all, I would recommend another grocery store in the area if you have the means to get to one. read more

More Ragu than Rao's. This Safeway is a mismatch for its surroundings. It's the biggest grocery store in Rosslyn, an upscale neighborhood where million-dollar condos are commonplace, but the goods on offer here are decidedly lower-price / lower-quality. Produce is hit-or-miss in terms of freshness, and if you're looking for something even a little exotic, you may be out of luck. Meat and fish I just don't get here. Some of the packaged goods are fine (Fage greek yogurt, Rao's pasta sauce, Kashi organic cereals, etc.), and my purchases here mainly focus on those items. On the plus side: the cashiers here are generally very polite and friendly. And they do seem to be taking steps toward a higher-quality selection of goods. But there's still a long ways to go. read more

It has been about a year since I last reviewed this Safeway, and it is still the same grungy, but so convenient dive. Safeway hasn't invested a nickel into improving this store. So here is where our household spent our $4,864.07 on groceries over the last 12 months: Giant on Washington Ave and Spout Run $3,208.21 Trader Joe's in Alexandria $601.06 Whole Foods in Clarendon $436.24 Wegman's way out west $343.92 Safeway in Rosslyn $274.64 Since we live in walking distance of this Safeway, we'd spend most of our money at this Safeway if it were on par with the nearby Giant stores. Maybe someday Safeway management will wake up and improve this dive. They don't seem to understand that business isn't lost, it just moves elsewhere..... read more

Huge turnaround after the renovation - bright, clean interior despite the underground location. Self-checkout makes pit stops for essentials a breeze. Although I echo other recent reviews regarding the pricier fare here. I shop across the street at Target for milk, eggs, coffee, olive oil, and even English muffins. All-in-all, a big convenience for denizens of Rosslyn shopping in foot. The parking garage is convenient as well for those driving here. read more

Horrible store. It's very depressing to shop here. The only positive is the convenience factor.

Don't bother anyone who works here. So don't have any problems or questions. Make an effort to avoid all human interaction with anyone who might look like they are working there. read more

Eeeewh, Gross Safeway ! This Safeway I would suggest you eat only what comes to the store in a package, then still check it. The kid who was in the kitchen every day tells dirty jack off jokes, so when I reminded him of something stupid he sad, his reply was that I would never work here. Smart ass doesn't know most people aren't looking to make $9 an hour at a dirty store. I wonder how angry Safeway's corporate office (in the United States) would be to know about these things. read more

Safeway - I could work here and fit in. - Grocery Near Me - Arlington, Virginia

I really like this Safeway. It's a smaller store so selection is not as large but I do like what they provide including decent selection of health food and wine. The staff is friendly, store is clean, the have a bakery with the most amazing looking cupcakes! That baker takes pride in their work. I typically get a loaf of their French bread at least once a week. It's nice to have a grocery store offering reasonable prices, fresh fruits and veggies and freshly baked bread in a downtown area. But with that also comes a lot of pan handling mostly friendly. read more

Looks better, but same shit management. There's 6 self checkouts, but on sunday evenings they close so you wait in 20+ minute lines to checkout for a gallon of milk. Ridiculous. read more

This place is dreadful. Dreadful. Dreadful. Dreadful. From the moment you walk in, the underground location and dim lighting just gives you a depressed feeling. The prices are great, better than anywhere else in the area, but I had to stop going. There are never more than 2 cashiers on duty. It usually takes over half an hour in a line that stretches down the ice cream aisle. None of them can fix their mistakes. I've seen customers who notice the wrong price on their receipt ask it to be fixed. The cashiers either refer them to a manager who isn't anywhere to be found or tell them to get in the back of the line. There are ALWAYS two kids by the front door asking shoppers to donate to their football team. I always deploy the same tactic I use with the Greenpeace kids at the Metro. Hold your cell phone up to your ear and just start yelling into it while you walk by. Most won't interrupt your pretend conversation. The real kicker that will keep me away from this place forever was meeting a guy who worked there. I mentioned a stack of dollar steaks I saw once. He explained that they are priced so low to try and avoid a total loss when they near expiration. This is common and most stores throw out the meat once it starts to gray. Safeway takes it a notch higher, grinds the steaks that can't sell at $1 and mixes it with good meat. Voila! Ground beef and no complete loss! Don't know if it's true, but it was enough to tip the scales. The Safeway in Ballston isn't nearly as bad as this one, so I don't know what the problem is here. read more

It was a hot day in Rosslyn and I needed a bottle of water. Surprisingly my phone number was still in their system from five years ago-- the last time I shopped at a Safeway. So, the $1.99 Fiji water went down to $1.59. It was a big bottle, so it was a good deal. However, the store was not as air-conditioned as it should have been, and it was in dire need of a renovation. Many grocery stores are in basements, and many have moldy items from time to time (Whole Foods not excluded). Unfortunately, this Safeway was just sad, uninviting and smelly. We had to walk through part of a shady parking garage just to get to the entrance. The final straw was that the bathroom was so disgusting that even my most rational and compromising friend Lisa could not bring herself to use it. read more

This Safeway is pretty hit or miss. They either have exactly what you need or nothing remotely close. It's not a huge store so it's pretty easy to navigate around the store. They don't always have the produce you need, though. I will also say the staff is usually pretty helpful when looking for something. All in all, a decent place to go if you're near this store and only have to pick up a few major items. read more

Horrible. Dont shop here if you're concerned about Covid. Most of the employees have their noses hanging out of their masks or think wearing a mask means it goes on your chin. Also employees never respect the 6ft rule, they'll walk right up to you, mask around their chin, and not even apologize if you tell em "Hey, 6ft please". Not to mention they dont stop customers if theyre doing the same. Not only are the managers clearly irresponsible when it comes to public safety this safeway is also always dirty, produce is always in bad shape, plus if you show up on weekday evenings to avoid the crowd they d*ck you over by closing the self check outs, so even if you wanted to avoid coming into contact with people you cant! They force everyone to get in line and everyone has to go through one cashier, worst grocery store in Nova. 0/10 read more

ERMAGERD This place is a dump - such a waste of space. Dirty, limp produce, and sad selection on a daily basis... I call this the Socialist Safeway because on a number of occasions, I've seen people almost come to blows over the last item of some no-name brand something-or-other. Seriously, this store should be an embarrassment to the Safeway Brand. No selection (see above), nasty produce, crowded aisles, and staff that just can't give a f***. If I worked in, essentially a basement for several hours, I may feel the same way. I am forced to shop here, as I don't have a car and am within walking distance. I do find myself going more and more to the Whole Foods in Clarendon, as it's quite depressing to spend my hard earned money in a place that so sub-par. read more

Poorly organized, rarely is more than one checkout counter open, frequently out of stock on essential grocery items, and the meat selection leaves a lot to be desired. It's ok for pre-packaged things, but I generally won't touch the produce with a 39 1/2 foot pole. All that said, it's convenient for folks who live in Rosslyn & Courthouse but don't drive. Update: This is now an even more annoying Safeway - you have to get your parking validated. Formerly you could just show them a Safeway receipt and they would wave you out - now you have to get a ticket and remember validation at the cash register. Strike three. read more

Unfortunately this is my nearest grocery store. Fortunately Whole Foods is my next closest (at only a mile away). Why did I give this Safeway only 1 star? - frequently out of stock of many popular items (limes, avocados, diet coke, etc) - aisles are frequently unorganized. It is as if the shelve stocker tried to play a carnival game where you throw the item and see if you can get it to go onto the hook - checkout lines are frequently very long - some staff are horribly unfriendly, but to be fair, there are a couple of employees who are so chipper and friendly, that it is the only reason I'd consider bumping it to 2 stars - they simply do not stock some things you'd expect to find in a grocery store (no crest whitestrips, no sour mix, no rinsing agent, etc.) read more

I mean, it's terrible. Really bad. Yes they have my beloved "full-fat" Polly-O String Cheese here, but they honestly don't have much else. At all. Ever. The bread shelves are frequently cleaned out, the produce is more than a bit dodgy, and I'm honestly shocked when they actually have greek yogurt in stock (and I hope you're not dreaming of Fage, because they only ever have Stonyfield Farm--yes, still tasty, but not the same). Also, the lines can be HORRENDOUS. The last time I was there I was incredibly close to putting everything back on the shelves because the lines were so out of hand and were moving so slowly. I grabbed a bottle of wine at the last second (which I wanted to crack that very moment) just because I knew I'd need a drink after that ordeal. That's not always the case, but it can be seriously off-putting. All that said, I still stop by on the reg because I don't have a car and it's only 4 blocks away. I wish the Whole Foods was closer, or really, that ANYTHING was closer, but I have been opting to stroll here instead of trekking to WF. I would give it only one star, but there is one cashier who is incredibly friendly who usually brightens my stop there. He's quick, efficient, and smiley, and he knows how to pack a reusable grocery sack just right. read more

I dub this Safeway the nickname Suburb Safeway. Why? For starters, it's Across The Bridge. In Rosslyn. Tucked along Wilson Boulevard sort of near Cafe Asia. The good thing about Suburb Safeway is that it opens at 7:30am on weekdays! It's perfect for a drop-by on one's way to work. Recently, I picked up some cherries there. They were fresh, sweet and delicious! I'll cut Suburb Safeway some slack for being poorly organized (it is), for sometimes running out of things (it does), and for its surly Safeway checkout people. Last time I was there, I had left my Safeway Card key fob in the car and didn't have it with me. It was 8am on a weekday. The checkout guy asked for my Safeway Card, and I informed him that I had left my keys outside. He sneered that Safeway Cards don't come on key fobs. I told him that they do, and I looked to the man in line behind me, who quickly surrendered his Safeway Card for me to use (you really need it!). I noticed a line of 10 people forming and no other checkout people available, so yes, I WAS THAT PERSON. [Groan.] I digress. Overall, it's a typical Safeway, with the typical goods-and-bads. Suburb Safeway: I recommend. read more

Well Yelp, I never thought I'd see the day I gave a 1 star rating, but this Safeway has earned the dubious honor. The grocery store can only be described as an awful florescent-lit Hades where food is punished for all eternity. There are very few places I can say this about, but I genuinely felt worse about myself upon entering. It's cramped, the shelves are poorly stocked, and the meat/produce required me to skim the dictionary to find a word that accurately encapsulated its appearance. I settled upon "dodgy - adj. 1. Evasive; shifty. 2. Unsound, unstable, and unreliable. 3. So risky as to require very deft handling. " If you ever find yourself thinking, but I just need one thing, II'll run in for a second, how bad could it be? Worst Safeway possible. This is, unfortunately, my only grocery option, but it is always unpleasant. I don't know how but something manages to go wrong every time. -a sale price doesn't load (the entire reason I get the item) but there is a long line so I can't inspect the prices as they are rung up -I always manage to get something expired. Gross. I now, paranoidly read ever single label for expired items. Sometimes I bring them up to the register -only 1 or 2 lanes open for a constant crowd of after-work people. They have no idea how to manage the lines at all. Other things: -underground, no reception at all, ghetto in feel. Feels confined. There are fewer items/items I cannot find due to the -strange and unpleasant cashiers. They don't know what they are doing, but I guess they are doing their best for what they are capable of. Some nice things: Even though Safeway has set their normal prices higher than all other stores, their sales are a good deal and the Just For U programs (stackable) is very easy and works well for steep deals. There is usually a completely free item every other week or so - just clip the digital coupon (app or online)! Nevertheless, I always feel drained after going here. I sometimes also wonder if I'm the crazy one. (No, I don't want the ice cream bars with spider webbing coming out of the box!) read more

Wow....what a f^%$ing dive. Very small, unorganized, dirty nasty overpriced grocery store. I was in town for a few days on business and thought I would run in to a close grocery to pick up a few necessities for the stay and was pretty disgusted with this place. I don't know who would shop here on a regular basis unless they had no other alternative. The place was so dirty, I question whether or not there may have even been some health code violations. In the middle of a densely populated area, the Rosslyn Safeway in Arlington, Virginia has a captive market. Warning, this review is not for those with a weak stomach. On a recent visit... 1. The woman making sushi sneezed. Fortunately she was wearing a facemark on her chin. 2. Went to get ground turkey breast and the shelf under the packages was dirty and looked putrid. 3. I bought southern coleslaw, it tasted positively vile. I dumped it in the disposal. 4. I bought a slice of carrot cake, there was long hair in the frosting. I dumped it in the trash. Gross, gross, gross! Who allows this store to stay open? Why would Safeway want their name tarnished with this shabby store that is in a perfect location. The produce section is laughable, as I have seen fresher things thrown out of Harris Teeter. The grocery selection is small, but the prices are pretty fair (that is where the second star comes into play) The only reason I shop here is if I need to pick up just an item or two, or to buy cheap wine. other then that, I refuse to patron this store. read more

This place is a sad, sad excuse for a grocery store. It's rarely properly stocked with fresh food and if it is, it's usually disgusting or will rot in a few days. Things will not be stocked for weeks and management never seems to be able to figure it out. Not to mention the selection is horrendous. A lot of the cashiers are pretty bad and clueless (though there are a few gems) and management is clueless. They were out of oatmeal for weeks and we were told it was "discontinued." So Quaker went OB, who knew....luckily Target thought differently. The place is also dark, cramped and dirty. The lines are always ridiculous and there's no where to even stand in line. A self checkout would help things a lot but management refuses to get one. We also recently got a snow storm (ended on Saturday and I am writing on a Friday) and they STILL have not stocked produce and have nothing. Once another grocery store goes up in Rosslyn, there's no way this will stay open. read more

I avoid this store at all costs. They only ever have around 1-2 staff members to ring people up (no self-checkout) so the lines are always long. The produce section and the fresh meat section are usually not clean/edible. Limited selection of food. read more

I hate driving to commute or run errands, so for me, it's hard to beat the convenient location. I shop here when I just need some basics or generally sturdy vegetables (like asparagus). As mentioned, in general, the quality of the produce is pretty low... unless you happen catch a fresh batch. Inventory in general can be spotty. So, if I'm looking for good produce or some specific ingredients, I drive to Harris Teeter on Glebe in Ballston. Agree with other reviewers: try to avoid shopping with the post-work crowd... the lines can get pretty long. I never had a problem with the homeless guy(s). At least they're not mean, aggressive homeless guys. My wife actually befriended one guy once--that being said, my wife is the nicest person ever. read more

God I love this Safeway, but only because it is like going into someone's WWII bunker. It's literally underground in a concrete building carved out of the hill on Wilson. It's fascinating. I also love it because it's like a block from home, but that's where the love kinda stops. They have things other Safeway's have, like milk and bread, but man the veggies. Like everyone else has said, it's just pathetic. But, also, like other Safeway's, they have mad deals on diet Coke. read more

I've been going to this Safeway for about a year now. They recently finished renovating and I do think that the renovations have improved the store as well as allowed for more health food items to be in stock which I'm a fan of. With the sales ad and my card, the prices are pretty good. The employees are okay, I'd like them to be a little friendlier. This stores saving grace is Gary. He's always in a good mood, very polite, smiling, helpful, and just overall makes this store worth going to. I really wish the other employees would take notice of his work effort and attitude because he's a model employee. Whoever is in charge of his salary should give this guy a raise because I most likely wouldn't be returning to this store if it wasn't for him, and the convenance of the location. read more

It's conveniently located a few blocks walk from the Rosslyn metro stop but I try and avoid at all costs unless I absolutely need something. Pros: Good in a pinch if you are right there and need something asap Free/Validated parking (if the machine is working....it hasn't it's been broken for months!) few blocks from metro and bus stop right in front Cons: kind of pricier than other safeways due to location Not the largest selection of products kind of submerged store some kind of homeless person or disabled person loitering and begging for money gets CROWDED during the week right after the rush not the cleanest or well kept safeway I've been to read more

This is a pretty bleak Safeway. It's better than the desperation Giant in northern Old Town, for example, but it's a dark store. It's mostly useful due to the lack of other grocers in the area. One interesting feature is the fact that there are multiple restroom signs in the corner near the flowers/produce section. The signs lead to a) a wall or b) the entrance to their stockroom. No restrooms. Maybe take the signs down? If all the Safeway stores in the DC area have nicknames...Social, Spanish, Soviet, the UnSafeway (Capitol Hill), this might be the Subterranean Safeway. read more

This grocery store is great. The bakery section is huge, I can be a bit of a picky eater but here I'm always able to pick out a couple of delicious desserts. In addition there is a large variety of freezer foods and canned foods along with all other types of foods. It's a big store, which is nice because they have room for variety. In terms of pricing, expect to pay a normal amount. I've never felt like I've gotten a good deal there, but I've never felt ripped off either so I'd say prices are fair enough. Staff are friendly as well, only issue is the dang self check out registers are so finicky and prone to making a fuss. It's not a big deal though, as there's always an employee watching over self checkout, and they always come racing to me before I even have to flag them down so I know they are doing a good job and paying attention. Good work! read more

The Manager was Rude and Abusing his pathetic little power! Worst experience I had going to Safeway! The lines were long and the cashiers were slow. Finally it was my turn and the manager/cashier (Edgar) was complaining about the fact that the bags were twisted together. So I said it was easier for me to carry that way since the line was so long. Then something unexpected happened. I handed him my club card and he took it quickly, then gave me the application form insisting me fill out the form since the card was not activated. What the heck?! First of all, I've been going to Safeway years and never had such a problem. What do you mean not activated?! I've been using it since I started shopping at Safeway!!! Secondly, I clearly heard the other cashier was asking him if he had more club cards. So, you just decided to steal my card?! Thirdly, the most ridiculous part was the fact that he was trying to threaten me saying without filling out the application, I wouldn't be able to get my card back. What?! Seriously?! I was wondering why this store was so poorly managed and the staff seemed inefficient every time I come here, which was only the second time today. Now it becomes really clear that they have a manager who only knows how to abuse the little power he has and steals customers club card when he decides to do so. This jerk needs to go for a better safeway for this nice neighborhood. read more

This is the worst grocery store ever!! The only reason I ever go is because it is so close to my home and then I remember why I hate the store every time I come out. They usually only have half the ingredients I'm ever looking for (and I never go for anything that is out of the ordinary)...for example - they had no blueberries one time, no lemons another time, no plain Chex cereal (and not to mention the cereal isle was completely unorganized). It's like watching your life slowly spiral down into the gutter as you've noticed that it's now been 10 min and one of 2 cashiers on duty is still arguing with the customer about whether something is on sale today or yesterday. You realize- why didn't I just go out to eat instead of thinking cooking at home would be easier and more convenient. I never come here for more than the staples: eggs, milk, etc mostly because there isn't much else you can (or should) buy here. and I always fool myself into thinking I can grab and go in a few minutes. Alas, it is never to be. I'm not giving it one star because it's super convenient, prices are respectable, and they've been trying to carry more fresh and organic things like herbs and salad making greens.
