My review is for the Safeway delivery service. I placed an order last week and specified delivery for Saturday (5/19) between 5 and 7 p.m. The order never arrived but they went ahead and charged me $115.26. I've sent two emails to delivery support with all this info and no one has replied. I will not recommend that anyone use their delivery service. read more

First I'll list the positives: Friendly staff, one of the cleanest well organized Safeways, & closest grocery store to my house. Now the negatives: 1) There is NEVER EVER enough cashiers at check out. Even Sun night at 9pm there is still a line! During peak times it is the worst. Only half the lanes are actually open and always have at least 10 people waiting and move at snail pace which brings me to my next point. 2) Though the staff is friendly, the cashiers are very inefficient. They look up produce codes using ratty folders instead of laminated catalogues other stores use. They are also busy gossiping with fellow employees while ringing up customers. Or every time an override is needed, the manager is not close by. 3) There is no express lane. The only reason I would come to this store is to pick up a few things quickly. But unfortunately I still have to stand in line behind people with carts full of groceries. 4) Though customer service is open from 9am-9pm there is NEVER anyone there to help. 5) This one is not Safeway's fault but is worth mentioning. The customers here are mostly non-English speaking. With that said it seems more difficult for them to operate the self check out. If you stand in the self check out lanes hoping to be ahead you are very wrong. Everyone in this lane is trying to figure out how to use it. So? Unless you have all the time in the world to wait in line, stay away from Safeway and go to Giant down the street. read more

Decently kept store but painful waits every time I come here. Today I swung by to do some groceries and in the middle of a rainstorm they decided to close the doors on the opposite end of the store so all of us who had parked on that side had to walk the farthest distance across the parking lot with our groceries in the pouring rain. Safeway - Always the longest lines! - Grocery Near Me - Annandale, Virginia

I was told that when they upgraded their checkout system, the self checkouts were not compatible and they were removed. They have not been replaced, checking out of the store, regardless of the amount of groceries you have often takes longer than the entire shopping experience. The weekend is a nightmare, I tried going this morning, thinking it would be less crowded and that I'd get out quicker, nope, the lines were 8 and 10 deep. There is way too much competition with Giant just down the street and a new Aldi going into the old Bloom location at the end of Columbia Pike. Until they put new self checkouts in, I will no longer shop at their store. read more

STAY AWAY AND BE SAFE!!! Corona Virus warning. I went in for a few necessities and was shocked to see so many employees without masks. My cashier had it hanging under her chin and when I mentioned it, she said she didn't like wearing it. As it turns out one item rang up at the wrong price, and when the manager came over, she didn't even have a mask. I felt very unprotected and will worry about exposure for the next 2 weeks. Overall, pleasant shopping experience, warm and pleasant. However, the prices tend be more expensive than the other grocery stores.

I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and we all see the world through the prism of our own experiences - but I am stunned that some people rate this place as anything other than bad. I have lived in Annandale for over 4 years and when I first moved here, this store seamed clean and there were always enough cashiers. That changed markedly after about a year, the store started going down. My only way to describe it now is ghetto! It is poorly managed and when you go to the manager to complain about the lack of cashiers or stock they blow you off. In addition, during the last power outage, this place smelled like a county dump. They have power generators but no one bothered to test/check them and everything was wasted. Communities have only one choice during a crisis, the local businesses and this one failed miserably. This place just needs to go away. Want good service and cheap prices, go to the International market on Backlick just inside Springfield. It is big and the produce is half the price. read more

i like this safeway. compared to the ones in dc, i find it to be better stocked, easier to maneuver, and with friendly staff. ample free parking always shocks me, being the city boy and all. so yeah, safeway isn't a place i dream of going every weekend, but as far as safeways go, this one is pretty darn good. read more

This is one of the worst grocery stores in the area that I have been in. The only reason I ever come in there is because it is super close to where I live, other than that I would never use this store for my normal weekly grocery shopping. I only come into this Safeway when I need basic things like TP or I am missing an ingredient for a meal I am working on. The customer service is sub-par, actually almost non-existent. A few of the cashiers are on their game and can provide decent service. There are always no more than 2 registers open at any given time it seems and there are always long lines because of this. I try to use the express check-out but that line is usually even worse and there is no organization about it. And their machines seem to break down a lot. But it is better than waiting in the lines for the normal registers since those lines seem to always be a mile-long. The store itself is okay...most of the time it is pretty organized and okay in regards to cleanliness, it could be cleaner but I have not seen anything that would gross me out at any given time that I have been in there. This store is okay for its vicinity and convenience but as for normal grocery store, I go elsewhere. This location definitely needs to work on efficiency, customer service, and improving their operations. read more

This safeway is kept pretty well stocked, however there was one item in particular that always seems to be out of stock, so I went to customer service to ask if there was anything they could do. The woman who came up didn't smile once; she looked miserable. She was incredibly rude, it was almost like she was trying to discredit the problem I brought to her. She didn't look up anything, she just spewed off a reason why it might be out of stock. Afterwards, I went to a different safeway and asked the same question to someone who worked there. While they weren't able to solve my problem, they did give me the correct information and were incredibly polite and helpful. Needless to say, I will not be returning to the Annandale safeway on Little River Turnpike. This kind of behavior is unacceptable for someone who represents safeway's customer service. I did call a manager who said he would write her up. He also offered me a 20$ giftcard, but I didn't take it. I've never experienced such horrible customer service at a safeway before, what a shame. read more

I shophere because they have better deals than Giant... however, there have been times I have tried to buy green peppers, and there were only about 5 left, and they were all shriveled up and old. Other than that, I've never had a problem with the produce/products at this location. My BIGGEST complaint, , however, is absolutely the lack of cashiers, and the absurd ATTITUDES of the cashiers that are there. During the week, they have AT MOST 2 cashiers working. Almost ALWAYS, one of the TWO open lanes is the "express 15 items or less" lane, so people buying enough food to last them for a week, have wait 30 minutes to check out. I have been there numerous times on the weekends as well, and they never have more than 3 lanes open..... There are very few polite cashiers (Lupe is the only name I can remember, but she is always pleasant). The younger cashiers act like they're doing you a favor by gracing you with their presence, and don't know how to bag worth a damn(ie: bagging fruit on top of bread, and over filling bags without double bagging them)! I can't believe corporate hasn't done something about this location yet! read more

The grocery store is fine, just what you expect from Safeway. Only gets 3 stars because of the meat/seafood dept. I did but the most fantastic tenderloin roast there for Christmas. Will definitely do that again. The staff in the butcher/seafood shop is very nice and most helpful. However, when I called the store to check on something and spoke to customer service the first person hung up on me instead of putting me on hold, and when I called back, and had to cycle through the music and silence twice (about 6 minutes) John answered the phone and he was dismissive and abrupt. Also, the checkers have no clue how to pack a grocery bag so it's easy to carry and they don't say thank you. They just hand you the receipt and maybe say have s nice day. When I spend my money I expect the store to say thank you, not me thanking them. Whatever ever happened to customer service? Lots of choices for shopping around here. Safeway needs to work on building customer loyalty. read more

I really want this store to do well, but the store seems too stubborn to change. As other reviewers have noted, there seems to never be more than 2 registers open, and the self-checkout machines seem to break down a lot. The store seems to always be in a mess, but the blame for that has to be shared with the customers. They are not clear with the coupon policy. They double coupons up to .99 cents. So I tried to buy wrigleys 5 gum (10 total) that was on sale .99. I used a coupon for .50 which double to .99. Now the self check out accepted all my coupons and I was only going to pay for taxes. No but the "cashier" just want to look at my transaction. He said wait it has to be approved by a manager first. You can't get more than 1 product for free????? I was like why ??your policy double coupons it happens to be on sale. He acted like a manager and told me no. You can only buy 1. Then I called costumer service and not even they were clear. They call back and said they "think" the store can only double 1 coupon for the same product which is no true. I have done this before and use other coupons and never happened to me. In addition want to add that after 7 pm self check outs are close and they have only 1-2 cashiers helping people. Lines become very long. There is barely anyone at the costumer service desk and you have to wait at least 10 minutes each time. I'm done with this Safeway I use to purchase here a lot. After I left I attempted to call the store twice. No one picked up the phone it took me back to the main menu after holding for 10 minute. Worst costumer service ever. Plus that guy who thinks he owes Safeway. My business will now go to Giant. read more

Since they took the self service registers out of the store it has been really bad as far as waiting in line. They don't have enough registers open. I was there on a Saturday afternoon prime shopping time and they had only 3 registers open and no express lanes at all. The lines were super long. Also I have had trouble with meat being bad when I purchased it and also the milk I bought being spoiled within a day of buying it which makes me wonder what they are doing when transporting or storing these items before stocking them. If you go to the milk coolers and open the doors and then look down through the front of the cooler to the floor it is extremely dirty and caked with old milk that has dripped down through there!! I have also seen mice in the produce area and told a worker there that I saw it scurrying toward the flower section they said Oh yeah we have them occasionally like it was no big deal. This place is within walking distance of my apartment but I am considering shopping somewhere else until I see some improvement. read more

Not the best safeway in the area. I am a frequent shopper here because it is so close to me. I am here like twice a week sometimes more. There are some really helpful employees in the customer service area, and some cashiers too. But I would say that more than half the time the prices on the shelves or in thier adds don't match with what comes up on my reciept. Either the instore coupons don't ring up right, or the old sale prices are still up in the store, or they just right up wrong. It is very fustrating. I can't always catch it when they're ringing me up so I always have to check it right after they ring me up and then I have to take my happy llittle but back over to customer service to get the price adjusted. They always correct the mistake and are very nice about it, but it is annouying to have it happen so much of the time. So if you do go to this safeway, check your receipt! You may not be paying what you think you're paying. read more

This store is great. They have excellent customer service, some of the best I've seen. Every time I shop and happen to see the store manager walking around, he's always doing something and when he greets me is always very friendly. Great cashiers, baggers....never have had an issue. Dealing with the public is not an easy job. I've seen customers act completely rude and disrespectful, and these folks take it with a grain of salt and manage to keep smiles on their faces. Sometimes they will be busy and not have enough staff. Annoying, but, that's life, folks. You can choose not to go to the store during rush hours. That's what I usually do, and it's great. When I do have to go during busy times, I'm prepared and ready to endure it. Be a human being. Don't be rude to the cashier b/c they're busy. It isn't their fault. Overall, great store. There's a Giant right next to them, which is bigger, but, I rarely go there. Just enjoy this Safeway and the people, which is more important to me. read more

This is the closest grocery to our house, and I can't stand it. There is maybe one guy there, I think he is the manager that seems to know what is going on and is helpful. It is impossible to get a smile from anyone else, and forget trying to get someone to help you if you can't locate and item you need. I've had to go to the customer service desk a few times over the years because I was charged incorrectly, but often there is nobody behind the desk! You just stand and wait until hopefully an employee walks by and you can flag them down and ask for help...if you don't flag them down they will just walk right by and not try to find someone to help you behind the counter. The lines take forever and often only have one full service lane open. So I try to self service and without fail, those don't work well at all and constatly say I need to get help. But the one person stationed there is trying to help six different customers who are all having trouble with their check out too. Stay away if you can. read more

worst safeway ever only thing good about it is when you go general shopping even then youll have issues treat it like a seven eleven store where you get random things like gatorade or small snacks and youll get a lot out of it. very dark place i dont know whats wrong with them put in more lights its not very welcoming when you enter the store especially at night. its just a mess just go to the giant down the road brighter and better and you can actually find things you want like milk you have to wait long but thats at every grocery store like shoppers or giant the staff dont apparently know where somethings are but thats fine they dont have much anyway read more

i was treated horribly by a cashier/line manager today at this safeway. he was working the express lane #7, an older, asian man, i don't remember his name. he yelled at me in front of everyone in the store because i had 2 items over 15. he told me he wasn't going to serve me and threatened to remove me from the line. he tried to get the customers behind me to come in front of me so he could serve them and not me. i have never been treated so badly. i have seen people with 50 items in express lanes and nothing is said to them. when i asked for the store manager he lied and said he was the store manager. well needless to say he had to serve me because i was not backing down. i got home called the store and spoke to sandra the assistant store director, she was great and appalled that i was treated that way, she apologized profusely and said she would discipline him. i told her she had nothing to apologize for and i wanted an apology from him. she said she would call me back and have him apologize. of course he refused to speak with me. he's been written up and if one more complaint he will be suspended. not sure that's enough but i guess i'll accept it. read more
