Sadie Mae's Menu as of Feb 2021

I grew up in rural Oregon in the mid-80s and it seems like back then every crappity-ass gas station in every little podunk town had great fried chicken and jojos (maybe this was some kind of Logger's Delight, I dunno.) Now it's like you really have to look for a place that gets it right. My wife and I discovered Reel M Inn just before they temporarily closed indefinitely, so we only got to try them once. My understanding is that until a few years ago, Sadie's had the same owners, so they essentially served the same version of chicken and jojos. So, how does Sadie Mae's compare to what is widely viewed as the best fried chicken and jojos in Portland? Very well. The chicken was super crispy, but it didn't really taste that well seasoned. It was good, but not quite as good as Reel M Inn. The jojos, however, were outstanding. Possibly the best jojos I've had in my life. Perfect amount of seasoning, and they weren't heavily dredged (coated with flour, etc.) just the seasoning and the potatoes. Perfect. Something that was a bit surprising was that neither the chicken nor the jojos were greasy at all. Other reviewers have mentioned they use an air fryer, so that makes sense. I'll definitely be back, if only cause they're closer to home, but Sadie Mae's is absolutely a worthy alternative to Reel M Inn.

Don't let the old gal fool ya ;)

Granted at first glance one might think Sadies is just another Video Poker (lottery) strip mall bar.... but step inside and you will find MUCH MUCH more! This little Eastside gem is one part sports bar, one part lottery bar, and all parts bomb fried chicken and jo-jo's bar! High ceilings, new owners that treat you like family, newly recovered pool table, free darts, three pinball machines (including the ever popular Medieval Madness), and featuring fried chicken a la The Reel Em Inn! Yep, that right the previous owners - brought their famous chicken along and the recipe stayed with the bar upon sale --. Why wait hours and hours across town for some tasty greasy love when you have the secret right here in Gateway?.... The vibe is great, eclectic, and truly all are welcome and all feel like family. Cone check out Sadies--- you wont be disappointed.

Double Cheeseburger bomb!!!

I love this bar it's my main spot! Lots of room, tons of tv screens a pool table but most importantly the chicken and Jojo's are purrrfect! Amazing service and a loud jukebox with seating for many and Video Poker!

Delicious fried chicken & Joe joe's. I always enjoy a couple of drafts while I wait. The bar tenders are always friendly!

Bartender sneezed in her open hand, wiped it on her pants then served a lady a drink handing her an uncovered straw. Gross!!!!

My boyfriend's brother and his partner were treated like regulars here and the feeling was extended to me and my boyfriend. Becca was so kind and friendly. She took the time to talk to us and it felt like gabbing with a friend. It's such a welcoming environment and I can really tell she really cares about this bar. She really made this feel like a cozy experience. The drinks were incredible. I'm not much of a drinker, and the drinks didn't feel intimidating at all. I tried the bees knees off of the happy hour menu and that was light with a lemon-y taste to it. I also had the panda punch and that is probably one of my new favorites. It's so light and fruity tasting with a hint of warmth to it. I realized now that I did not get any pictures of the drinks and I'm really sad. They were both very beautifully presented. All of the drinks in the group looked fantastic. I already cannot wait to go back.

You can absolutely smell the fish and vinegar as soon as you walk through the door, which I think gives the place a very homey pub feel. I ordered a spiked peach Arnold Palmer, which I enjoyed (and it was pleasantly strong) and a glass of the house white, which was good for the price. Our server was very fast and attentive. To eat I got the tomato soup with a grilled cheese, which was absolutely fantastic. The soup was so creamy and flavorful, and I cannot imagine a better meal after spending all day walking outside in the rain. The fries were super crispy and I liked the batter. My partner and I shared some of their breadsticks, which were deliciously baked (fresh!) and came with a super refreshing basil crema and a nice tomato-y dip. Wonderful all. My partner ordered fish and chips, and was surprised to find that it is one large fillet of fish, not multiple pieces like you would typically expect. He said the fish was fine, but a little tough. Overall, a wonderful experience. I definitely hope to return. I highly recommend this place as a refuge during the cold winter months!

But the last few times I've stopped in for a meal, it feels like the food isn't quite as impressive as it used to be. Could be all in my head. Not sure. But it's always a nice spot to hang out and chat with friends, you can get seated quicker if you enter through Over & Out, which basically functions as an extension of the main Observatory, with it's own bar and pool tables.
