I have been to this place several times, I have only visited it twice on weekends and every time I have been there on weekends, the waitress has been the same racist lady. The first time she didn't want to serve us at all, if it weren't for the chef, we would have left that day. The chef realized that we were not receiving service, so he went and told him that we were waiting for a while and replied loudly to the chef, I don't give a damn. Now, yesterday I was supposed to meet several friends there, so I arrived first and she didn't even serve me at all, she noticed me and looked at me, she just passed by me and served other people except me. For me, the jury's still out on Katie's Backyard. Our brief visit a couple weeks ago, intending to meet up with some friends (who ended up being unable to stop by) wasn't enough for me to formulate a complete opinion, but I have a few observations that will hopefully be useful. First, the lady (Katie?) at the bar was super friendly and engaging, despite this being pretty divey, even for a dive bar. She was very apologetic when my first two cocktail choices included ingredients that they didn't (currently) stock, so I kept it simple and stuck with a whiskey and coke. My wife similarly kept it uncomplicated, and ordered her usual "Christmas Tree" drink, as I call it: Tanqueray and soda. Seriously, I think it tastes like the water at the bottom of a Christmas tree's reservoir, but she loves it. Now I'm starting to understand why she picked me as her husband...she has bad taste! Enough of that. Anyway, the bar ended up being pretty empty, except a handful of souls gambling or drinking at the bar, so noise levels and social distancing weren't an issue. There was plenty of space for additional tables, a (potential) dance floor, pool tables, or live music, but most of the interior was littered with small tables and empty space. There were some dart boards along one wall, but they were turned off at the time of our visit. I'm thinking that in the "Before Times", pre-COVID, this place probably had a lot more going on. Probably will again, if we ever return to normal. For those familiar in the area, Katie's has a lot in common with Bill's Steakhouse, further down Sandy. I suspect they have the same owner. For the uninitiated, this means you're going to find solid, hearty, and somewhat basic food, stiff (but uncomplicated) drinks at cheap prices, and a colorful array of customers, from all walks of life. When the world rights itself, and we can all venture back into densely packed spaces without killing each other, it'll be interesting to see what Katie's true form looks like (the bar, not the lady). read more

I am reluctant to review KB. This bar is smack in the middle of a lotta nothing- rent by the hour motels, closed shops, some tents and 2 great Mexican restaurants. It's on Sandy between 102nd and 122nd. The building is set back so you don't really notice it, however it has a big sign and huge parking lot. For quite a while I thought it was boarded up and closed. Nope just the neighborhood. I first ventured in to KB because I was looking to drink without the prying ears of my coworkers. I am glad I did. First night I met World Class Bartender Eileen. She makes this place work. I return because of her. What makes this place special is that everyone just does their own thing. The video poker folks just spend their money and are chill. The bigger groups just drink and eat and are chill. The tweakers are managed and treated fairly. We all have a place at KB's. People police themselves. I appreciated the fact that Eileen made sure to have the beer I liked on ice, that they brought in some new choices and that every time I showed up - the bartenders were in a good mood. There was no bitching or whining, the Bartenders were doing their job, serving their customers. I like that. Their steak bites are bomb and if the right cook is there their nachos are layered and so worth it. This place is old Portland ... before Covid before the entitled before too tight tees before man buns KB is the place to go when you just want to hang out, without it having to be a scene. Only way I could like this place better is if they had a back patio over looking the train tracks... but they don't, and that's okay. read more

This is a place I have been going to for over twenty years. I'm loyal to this establishment for because of the bartenders that are mostly old school kinda AWESOME,! Good food and drinks. Came here to play darts while traveling... very well ran establishment I must say. A little expensive for the beers however. Overall I enjoyed my visit and recommend stopping in. UPDATE: This WAS a 5 star review, but it's now a 2 star review. One employee can ruin a great experience. We asked to park our RV overnight after were granted permission to do so. In the morning at 9AM the cook was banging on our door saying we had to buy some food or leave... he was sent out by the bartender. You could tell he really didn't want to be doing this, but he had no choice. I went in and explained to the current (morning) bartender that I had PERMISSION to stay.. she said she had no note letting her know that. But instead of apologizing, she doubled down and start "well, it's almost 10AM" in a rude voice. Keep in mind this lot is huge and there were a whole 4 cars total at the time. She should atleast had the common sense to wait till Noon or 1PM..even hotels know that. I left and won't be back. read more

Have been driving by here for years. Today with Val's son we stoped. I'll start out by saying the pictures don't do it justice, the place needs a complete remodel. That being said it was freezing cold as they had the doors propped open. Now the food, great fries, great tater tots, and average sandwiches. Served by a very efficient waitress! Probably won't go back as there are way better Dive Bars in this city My Fathers Place comes to mind. One other thing they do have nice pool tables and lots of video poker machines. read more

This is one of my favorite "dive" bars! The drinks are bountiful and if you are there at the right time, the Salisbury Steak is one of the best I've had! In fact, the 10 oz. sirloin is great also. This is your typical dive bar. Yah the food is minimal at best. They serve microwaved frozen food and a few deep fried dishes. Essentially the minimum required to serve liquor. The staff tries their hardest and the drinks are strong as fuck. read more

I'm not sure wtf Penny's ranting about in regard to a 'prime rib' sandwich - this is a sports bar on sandy blvd (nobody is expecting any prime rib experience) This is a tavern burger type of place (which is what I ordered) - For $6.75 you get an awesome bacon cheeseburger with side of fries (great portions and great burger) In fact, it's hands down the best burger I've had in the past six or more months. Better than Red Robin, better than Stanich's... The fries are also equally as good. I have to admit that I was expecting an average or so-so burger along with fries (surprisingly not the case) I cannot speak for any prime rib affair or any of the rest of the menu, but with burgers that good for the price, anything else on the menu good or bad is irrelevant as far as I'm concerned. read more

Just to give you an idea of what to expect. The sign outside isn't working completely. The tables were tried to sit at were all dirty. The bartender sucked something fierce. After selling me a bottle of beer for $4.50, and that was the happy hour price, I couldn't get another drink or food so I was finally able to close my tab . Bathroom stunk so bad I couldn't figure out if people were just pissing on the floor or if something was broke. That along with purses being stolen make this a place to avoid. read more

Nice bartenders. But the food is always cold. The butter doesn't melt on the toast. The hashbrowns and bacon are always cold like the food may be leftover from a previous meal. The bathrooms are gross and completely dirty. Tried to talk to the owner and she was rude and had no interest. read more

STAY AWAY!!! I ordered to go 2 "smoked prime rib sandwich" OMG, Discusting isn't a strong enough word. I haven't been there for at least 2 yrs, its gone down hill to say the least. There idea of JOJO's are the frozen kind you get in the freezer isle the bread was complete soggy, and the worst part of the whole deal was the meat is SMOKED ROUND ROAST, not rib roast I couldn't chew it at all after one bite it went in the garbage along with my money I don't know how there Cook can sleep at night I imagine he's fresh out of prison on parole that's the vibe in the joint. In some respects I guess Katie's could be considered a bit of a dive, a hole the wall. Definitely not a 4-star restaurant, however, what makes my fiance and I show up week after week is what's happening inside. First, the wait staff. They are friendly but edgy and their humor is awesome. Angel's laughter rings through out the restaurant leaving you no doubt she's in the house. Ilene will sing if you beg her and she is everybody's friend. The other night crew works hard to make sure you are taken care of with a smile and something witty to say. Secondly, the Karaoke on Wednesday's and Friday's is DJ'd by RoxyStar, a married couple who do a fantastic job with the sound and DJ'ing. Eric is an incredible sound tech ensuring quality sound for the singer and for the audience. You don't have to scream over a singer to still visit and, as a singer, you're not plugging an ear to try to hear the music either. A great balance takes talent. Roxy's DJing is short yet sweet and if you ever sing as one of their Karaoke singers, Roxy will create a file for you of the songs that you sang. This really helps the singers remember what they sang the last time and they can add new ones to it. The selection of songs and equally important, the QUALITY of the accompaniment tracks is 5 stars in my book. Broken down into either song title or artist, these 3-ring notebooks are well prepared to ensure the latest and the greatest in music. The third great thing about Katie's is the regulars. They are welcoming if you want to be part of the camaraderie and laughter but they'll also respect your choice not to. If you do take the chance to join in you will find yourselves among friends. I guess I should talk about the food here too. I do have recommendations. The best value is the pepper steak dinner. Accompanied with baked potato, veggies & soup or salad the price of $4.95 is amazing. Other yummies are their RIBS which are to die for and their terayki swiss mushroom burger. Beyond that you'll have to ask what the staff recommends but overall I think they do a pretty good job even though I wish for some "excitement" to be added to the menu. So when to come to Katies? Come for Karaoke, come for food & drink at a decent price and make sure you come on Fridays when the place is bustling for the most enjoyment of all of their best. read more
