For me, the jury's still out on Katie's Backyard. Our brief visit a couple weeks ago, intending to meet up with some friends (who ended up being unable to stop by) wasn't enough for me to formulate a complete opinion, but I have a few observations that will hopefully be useful. First, the lady (Katie?) at the bar was super friendly and engaging, despite this being pretty divey, even for a dive bar. She was very apologetic when my first two cocktail choices included ingredients that they didn't (currently) stock, so I kept it simple and stuck with a whiskey and coke. My wife similarly kept it uncomplicated, and ordered her usual "Christmas Tree" drink, as I call it: Tanqueray and soda. Seriously, I think it tastes like the water at the bottom of a Christmas tree's reservoir, but she loves it. Now I'm starting to understand why she picked me as her husband...she has bad taste! Enough of that. Anyway, the bar ended up being pretty empty, except a handful of souls gambling or drinking at the bar, so noise levels and social distancing weren't an issue. There was plenty of space for additional tables, a (potential) dance floor, pool tables, or live music, but most of the interior was littered with small tables and empty space. There were some dart boards along one wall, but they were turned off at the time of our visit. I'm thinking that in the "Before Times", pre-COVID, this place probably had a lot more going on. Probably will again, if we ever return to normal. For those familiar in the area, Katie's has a lot in common with Bill's Steakhouse, further down Sandy. I suspect they have the same owner. For the uninitiated, this means you're going to find solid, hearty, and somewhat basic food, stiff (but uncomplicated) drinks at cheap prices, and a colorful array of customers, from all walks of life. When the world rights itself, and we can all venture back into densely packed spaces without killing each other, it'll be interesting to see what Katie's true form looks like (the bar, not the lady).

It wasn't super busy but it did seem like she was the only wait staff working at the time. We ended up getting some potato skins for the table to share which were pretty good and honestly my favorite appetizer to start off with. My brothers girlfriend and I shared some chicken tenders and my mom and dad shared a club sandwich and a caesar salad, which I stole some bites of, and my brother went with a burger. All great easy things to eat after the flight and to keep us full before heading to a big dinner. This spot is a pretty decent size and super close to the airport so if you are starving after your flight and need a quick bite this spot is easy to run in and grab a quick bite!

The bar has been open barely a year, yet somehow managed to hire staff who treat the space like their personal kingdom instead of a public establishment. One bartender in particular seems incapable of separating personal feelings from professional conduct. something that has followed her around Tigard for decades. locals will most likely recognize a pattern of pettiness, inconsistent service, and customers being 86'd not for behavior, but for existing in a way that bruises an ego. Management may want to take a closer look at who they've put behind the bar. Because when staff behavior feels immature, jealous, and wildly unprofessional, it reflects poorly on a business that's still trying to build a reputation.

In fact, the very first time we went to that location, it was called 'Sir Loins'! His grandparents used to take us there, and after Sir Loins, we went back once, but were not happy with their steak. Years later, we'll give them another chance. Hubby ordered a glass of Merlot, and said it was excellent. For his meal, he ordered the Surf and Turf, which was an 8 ounce sirloin steak and large fried shrimp. As his side, he ordered the loaded baked potato. A green salad was also ordered. We were quite frankly blown away by the food. The steak was cooked exactly as requested and was as tender as could be. The potato was hot and loaded, and came with additional butter, sour cream and green onions to add on. Toasted cheese bread was on the plate. The salad with ranch dressing was just fine too. All that for a very reasonable price. Service was quick and friendly. The vibe of the pub was friendly as well. I got Rueben Sandwich with fries. We shared the salad, above. The sauerkraut with my Rueben was far more better than one I had recently! Half of everything, was set for another meal.

I'm getting up there in age, and friends my age have been transitioning to pickleball. I tried it several years ago, but my knees weren't having it. Decided pickleball wasn't for me. Fast forward a few years. A friend told me that there was a friend on Facebook that was starting a pickleball group. I asked to join the group. I like staying social and active in my old age. For our first get together we decided on a location that was centrally located of where everyone was coming from. I'm in Hillsboro, one was from Vancouver and another was coming from Troutdale. We decided on The People's Courts. I like that there was plenty of parking. I entered the building and it was spacious with plenty of courts, good lighting. I got there early and since I hadn't eaten yet, went to The Kitchen (I love the reference to "kitchen" in pickleball!) to see what they had. There were a few vegan items, I ended up getting fries and a coke zero while waiting for friends. When my friend that made the court reservation got there, there was a mix up with his reservation. He tried to reserve online, but was unsuccessful. So he called and spoke with someone. The problem was that the reservation was for last month. Availability was now more limited. We ended up getting an outdoor court for half an hour. I actually liked playing outdoors, though it was a warm day. We got The Bunker down in the basement for the next hour. I kind of liked it down there because it was private and had fun music playing! We didn't really know the rules, so we just rallied around. It was a great workout! Upstairs, it looked like plenty of courts, plenty of seating areas to gather and be social. Ping pong tables, corn hole thingies. I saw an arcade. Everything you need to have a fun time!
