This is an amazing seafood restaurant in Astoria! We had been looking for a good place for dinner and stumbled upon this place by coincidence. I can't believe my luck finding this place out of pure luck. I must admit that this is the best seafood place I have been to in a while. Came here with my wife on a Saturday night and the food was delicious. We ordered a Mixed Tajine with squid and shrimp, and a mixed seafood platter for one. The Tajine was basically a seafood stew in a tomato sauce. The tomato sauce was delicious, and almost tasted Italian, flavor-wise. The mixed seafood platter came with lobster tail, squid, shrimp, scallops, and a tilapia fillet. It was definitely enough food for three people, since it came with a salad, rice, and delicious fresh-made pita bread. The service was efficient, and everything was fresh. I have visited this restaurant a couple of times before writing this review to have an accurate review that would help others. The hot bread freshly made is a positive start before your meal, the appetizers are appropriately portioned ( get the mouth-watering eggplant w tomato sauce and hot peppers) the seafood tagine is delish and the grilled branzino Egyptian style is incredible! I came here on a double date last night and the food was delicious! My boyfriend and I shared a seafood platter, fries, tahina, and babaghanoosh. The seafood platter was delicious! It came with a lobster whose meat fell right out of its shell, a surplus of shrimp (because we opted not to get tilapia) some scallops and two heads of squid. All of the fish on our platter came in a tasty onion tomato sauce and was smothered in breadcrumbs. The service was a little slow. The waiters didn't really come to check on us too often. My cousin also placed an order of grilled calamari but received an order of fried calamari. However, the waitstaff did replace is without hesitation. Overall, good experience. Although I'd pick Astoria Seafood over Sabry's on most days, this is a nice alternative if you don't feel like waiting an hour or navigating a chaotic dining room. The waitstaff here is friendly, attentive, and happy to explain things on the menu. We heeded Yelp's advice and got the Spearings (Spearlings?) as an appetizer and they were *perfect.* I think these are smelts, battered and deep fried, with a tomato-based dipping sauce and wedges of lemon. I could literally eat the whole platter of these. We also got a platter of salad (this was fine) and the house rice (seasoned) to have with our shrimp/calamari taugine and mixed seafood platter (we opted for salmon, shrimp, scallop, and calamari). Everything was well-cooked, though I found the taugine a little thin and bland -- I would have liked it a little spicier, but it was warm and pretty savory. The highlight, to me, is the giant flatbread (baladi) that they give you with your meal; it's freshly made, gigantic, tender, fluffy, and perfect for sopping up sauces. There are several Egyptian seafood places in Astoria and we've been to a few, but Sabry's was a winner. It's a chiller vibe, so they were able to fit our party of 8. It was a weeknight, BUT they take reservations, which is a plus. The food was great! Standouts were the grilled octopus and whole bronzini--some of the best I've had anywhere. We decided to go there only due to the fact they opened earlier then the other restaurants we wanted to go . The place is spacious and cute . Waiter was very attentive. Unfortunately the baker I guess was not clean at all he continued to shake a waiters hand and still kept cutting and rolling the dough to the tray . omg he opened the oven and made the dishes not one time did he thought let me sat this aside and cook or do this or that or wow wash my hands or even have gloves. I've been a loyal customer to the Arab Astoria area for the exquisite Middle Eastern/North African cuisine and pastries on Steinway Street. Its no exception for Sabry's - an Egyptian Seafood restaurant that the CEO of my previous place of employment used to talk about while raving about their fried Branzino fish. As I mentioned in my previous review, their grilled Branzino is just amazing. So we started it off yesterday evening with two freshly made limeades or lemonades, we werent sure which one but it was sooo good, cold and super refreshing! This time I decided to try out their grilled salmon and it was extremely delicious, fragrant and cooked to perfection. My friend who despises seafood actually tasted and liked the salmon and fell in love with the sweet & fluffy, freshly made pita bread that was just phenomenal as always... She even jokingly asked Asser, the gracious and welcoming host, what the recipe was and he laughed and said he couldn't tell us. LOL. We also really liked the salad, it was fresh, green and infused with cumin, lemon and olive oil. We concluded our stay with a relaxing mint tea and lots of pics and lots of laughs. My friend and I were glad to see a resurgence in the amount of people and revivement of the area once again after the quarantine. Outdoor dining, lights and tents made the area even more attractive and inviting than ever before. These people really know how to grill whole fish and make fresh, delectable pita bread. The other food we had was all good as well, but those two items were stand outs. The service was also good. I would totally recommend this place as somewhere to go for great food. It is not about the atmosphere. There is nothing bad about the atmosphere, but there is nothing great either. I tried this place for the first time, and I must say..the freshest seafood ever!!! The fried calamari had a burst of flavor to die for The lobster dinner for 2 was amazing!! Fresh out of the tank and loaded with all kinds of seafood, clams, shrimps, octopus, scallops and the juiciest tilapia. The service was wonderful and everyone was friendly. Not only did they prepare an awesome meal, they treated us like family. The food was very reasonably priced and the portions are tremendous!! I will be dining there again. The overall ambience of the place was somewhat reminiscent of the old cafe's on the streets of Cairo. As soon as i was seated i received warm pita and some tahini. Both were delicious. Well, how familiar are you with the Middle Eastern part of Astoria? Not really? Well, you should go at least once - It's on Steinway between Ditmars and 30th, and is centered around the Intersection of Astoria Blvd and Steinway (so the M60 SBS goes there on the way to LaGuardia Airport. No excuses, Manhattanites). It's a bit of a nighttime destination since the entire drag is dotted with hookah bars, late night kebab joints, and groceries dotted with interesting stuff that is open rather late. (Most places in the area closes at 11p or past that). You got Egyptian joints like El Rawsheh (not bad), Little Morocco (28th and Steinway and mostly a takeout joint with decent merguez), El Sham (best Kunafe on the East coast, and I am serious about that), Tanjawi (the Moroccan butcher/grocer selling some of the best Mint Green Teas in existence, AKA Sultan teas from Morocco), The Egyptian Coffeeshop (it usually has a poster of Gamal El-Nasser on the window and a kebab cart right outside), Layali Dubai (expensive and full of ostentatious crap, much like the real Dubai), and you have Sabry's (or as I call it, Uncle Sabry's). So okay, what can you expect out of Sabry's? Well, you are in Astoria, so you should be familiar with the way how the Greeks and the Aegean Turks do their seafood. If not, the answer is - fresh, minimal prep, some olive oil drizzled on top, grilled with sea salt, squeeze some lemon, or stewed in a fairly decent sauce with tomatoes and fennel, so this is what you will get. The usual iced display of fish and shellfish, the prep is simple, but with the Egyptian/Levant flair of fenugreek and cumin. All meals start with a salad (basically fattoush with sumac and some pita bits mixed in), and pita bread. Get some hummus or baba to go with it. Get yourself a cocktail (multi-layer non-alcoholic fruit shake). It's BYOB, but considering that it's an Arab joint it might be in poor taste to pop a Chardonnay here. The decor is reminiscent of the fish restaurants that I visited while in Istanbul. So what to order? The seafood combos are usually a good idea...you usually get enough to feed the number of people that you order for, plus a bit more. If you eat like a yuppie a platter of 2 is usually good for 3, and etc. The seafood is typically stewed in a cuminy sauce, delicately flavored, and they give you some rice to go with it. Ask for the olive oil and pitch in some sea salt, have it with the sauce from the combo. and you'll be set. You might need to add some salt to it to bring the flavors out. Doggy bagging it is fine and should be okay in the microwave the next day. The food is not exactly James Beard award terrific, but par for the neighborhood, which is quite good indeed. Price is a little high, I think I dropped 80 for this meal (including tips), but when it comes to seafood, you get what you pay for. Going cheap and getting Listeria later is not something that you want. Either ways, decent joint. A little pricey to be a community service joint, but solid for more-splurgey dining. read more

Although from the area, this is the first time I came for dinner with friends. Initially I was worried that I would not be able to enjoy a full dinner since I am a vegetarian but the few items from the menu I was able to order were so delicious and perfectly prepared, presented, and cooked I enjoyed my dinner just as much as my friends. They order several different fish. From appetizers to the plate full of different types of fish the colors and smells filling the air I was almost tempted to taste. My mom wanted to eat lobster tails for her birthday dinner, so my sister and I sought out a well-rated place that wouldn't cost us an arm and a leg. After a basic Google search, we ended up at Sabry's. We were curious, since we'd never eaten at an Egyptian restaurant before. Their All Menus page seriously needs to be updated...the prices have all gone up like ten bucks! At least the portions are big. Plus you get some warm complimentary pita bread while you're waiting for your food to arrive. The seafood was very fresh, as promised by fellow Yelpers. A little salty for my taste, but maybe that's how Egyptians like seafood. I've really only ever eaten American and Asian seafood dishes, so who knows? My sister and I both ordered the seafood soup suggested by our waiter, whose English wasn't great, so we had no idea it was a special menu item. We thought it was the $6 soup on the menu, but it turned out to be $11 for one bowl, so we paid a whopping $22 for the soup alone. Ouch. I guess it was kind of my mistake for assuming, but it still kind of sucked. Huge, savory bowl of soup, though (see my photo), so maybe it was a blessing in disguise. I was already getting full after finishing the soup! The king crab entree I ordered was yummy. Super chunky clusters, but the too-salty seasoning kind of distracted from the taste of the crab, which was already deliciously fresh by itself. The bill was pretty steep, but we expected it. If we'd gone to Red Lobster, I think we would've ended up paying around the same amount (minus the cost of the expensive soup) for lower quality seafood. Plus I hear Sabry's is still cheaper than some of the other local seafood restaurants. My biggest gripe was the slow service. It took 40 minutes before our soup even came out. I mean, I know it was a pretty busy night, but I did notice a handful of Middle Eastern families who were seated after us, and their parties were much bigger. They got their food quickly, and they were able to leave way before us. The waiter was courteous and professional, though, so I definitely wouldn't write off Sabry's just yet. read more

On the Fourth of July, my boyfriend and I had a friend in town and decided to take her to Sabry's Sea Food. Kevin has read some reviews touting the freshness of the fish, so we were on another adventure into Astoria. This place is an absolute jewel. On the edge of Egyptian Row, Sabry's seems like a rather ordinary restaurant. There are tables outside and the room itself doesn't seat too many people. It's pleasant enough, with an ocean and sea motifs. The menu is definitely extensive and just about all fish and seafood. There are some pasta dishes, all featuring shellfish such as clams, mussels and shrimp. We ordered a bevy of dishes, starting with grilled octopus, which was absolutely delicious. The meat was so tender and tasty, we almost devoured the plate! As for the mains, we split a plate of fried sardines, which came lightly breaded and wonderfully juicy. Kevin ordered the whole grilled bronzeiny, cooked perfectly and very meaty for fish. Our friend had the grilled porgies, similar to the bronzeiny. I decided to try the taojine scallops - these were baked in a clay pot with sauce, which was just amazing and the scallops were very large. To be honest, it was really too much food for three people, even for Kevin, who eats enough for two people. We were very impressed with the quality and amount of food and all felt that it was one of the best meals we've had in a while, especially when it comes to fish. Other customers at a table nearby ordered a variety of food we didn't recognize. We asked our waiter and found out that there were items not on the menu. It's worthwhile asking if the kitchen can make something in particular. The service was fine. We were there at time when it wasn't busy, so our waiter had plenty of time to check up on us, as well as explain some of the dishes. So if you find yourself craving amazingly fresh fish and seafood dishes, this is one place I'd certainly recommend! ADDENDUM: There is no beer or wine at this establishment, and you're not allowed to bring any from outside.
