I remember when the Ledger tried that. It didn't work and now they have no online version at all since having been purchased by the local Miwuk tribe last month. This limiting access by charging to read online articles is really not fair to their writers as well as the advertisers who deserve a wider audience, especially in the gold country where so many of us read multiple papers. I usually read about 6 papers a week, mostly on line, especially now that our local paper has abandoned independent journalism for employment at the casino, which, come to think of it is a pretty big story which more papers should be covering as it does not bode well for the future of local journalism.

Because the drawings were so popular, Steve stayed 2 hours longer than we originally contracted for and did so gladly! I highly recommend Steve for any of your party plans.

But sadly it doesn't seem willing to compete in that arena. Love the Lodestar though, especially its Amador coverage, so am adding a star for that but that is going to change if they can't hang onto Scott Anderson. The Enterprise seems to have trouble finding an editor that will stick and the online version is better than the competition but seems to be stuck in certain areas, or maybe isn't updated completely. At least they're hanging in there, and may feel or be threatened by the "nut news" of Amador, purporting to cover Calaveras also, with their apparently unlimited funding. Free, independent press in the foothills is at risk.

I couldn't even read the article without registering, which wouldn't be a problem... although it's a bit invasive to require a home address and phone number. I tried anyway, then received an email saying my registration would be reviewed before sending me a password. I gave up. I get requiring registration with real information before posting comments, but to READ an article? Guess what, jerks... the woman is dead. Not sure of the circumstances yet, but maybe you should let everyone read the important news, no? Maybe this sort of tragedy might be prevented in the future?

I find it hard to believe that a newspaper would respond to negative comments by preventing those comments from appearing on their web site. As for the stories they publish, they lack detail and let the most obvious questions go unanswered (I call this the Ledger Dispatch's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy of news reporting).
