This rating is for the food as I only ordered takeout from them. I have had the jalea personal and the special chaufa. The jalea is a fried seafood platter with fried yucca. Every time I have ordered it has been delicious. The arroz chaufa is Peruvian take on fried rice and the special has shrimp, chicken and steak. Cooked to perfection. Definitely looking forward to try the dine in experience. read more

Everything about this place was great except for the food, hints the 3 stars. I got the fried trout, and it didn't taste like anything. It just tasted like oil. It is apparent that they don't season the fish before put the fish in the batter. It was also not firm or crispy after frying it. It was soft in the middle. Salt and lemon couldn't help it. It was a done deal. Maybe the trout should be a la plancha or a la parilla instead. read more

Food was amazing and the service was great. They made sure we had everything we needed. I recommend the tacu tacu lomo- it was phenomenal! I loved the side orders of fried yucca and fried plantains. We also ordered jugo de guanábana and maracuyá! Absolutely delicious! read more

Recommended by a friend originally from Central America who said the ceviche here is great- definitely agree and glad I found out about this randomly authentic place. It's so close to East Rock by car, just across the bridge. Fish Ceviche was plentiful, and spice level was appetizing, and had same lime-citrusy flavor profile as ceviche I had in Lima. It also came with some yucca (white root veg) and sweet potato that was surprisingly sweet and added to the yummy soft chew. No off flavor, no gummyness. The sauce for the lomo saltado (typical Peruvian beef dish) was really yummy and enjoyed drowning my crispy fries in them. The beef was a little on the chewy side, not really sure why but on the upside I didn't feel greasy-terrible afterwards. There were these fat clam ceviche things that were really good too, with green shells. Fresh, chunky, and citrusy..! Not a lot of mom and pop places do this, but the tables had clean and pretty table clothes, dishes were all nicely plated, pretty cute place. Everything didn't take long as well, and owners were big on smiles, bonus if you know some Spanish. read more

The kindest owners you'll ever meet! It seems like a family run operation. Unfortunately I only got to visit during corona so I had to get take out, but man would I love to stay and order a few dishes. The seafood dish I ordered was of the best quality, super fresh. And when I came to pick it up the owner gave me a taste test of fried mussels they were brewing up in the kitchen. Out of all the places I've been in the New Haven area this place gets the top spot for quality service and exceptionally fresh food. Ill be back and I'll be bringing friends! read more

Ordered take out and spent a fortune for hardly any food, if people spend $20 on one dish it shouldn't be looking like a lunch special. Half the styrofoam packaging was rice, if I wanted that much I would have ordered a side. There may not be many Peruvian places around here but its still not worth the money, I'll wait till I'm in NY where lomo saltado never costs $20 and you get far more. This place is a rip off, super disappointed. read more

I'm from out of town but my friends wanted to try some Peruvian food. As a Peruvian I'm super picky when it come to Peruvian restaurants. We ordered anticuchos, ceviches as appetizers. They were delicious. Seasoned so well. I ordered the lomo saltado, while my friends ordered the chaufa de pollo and trucha. Everything was so well done. We had a delightful lunch special there. Surprisingly good and affordable. The incredibly friendly hostess does not speak much English and tried so hard to accommodate us. Apparently English speakers are not regularly coming through for lunch. We have an interest in visiting Peru someday so this was our chance to test the cuisine. Our lunches were excellent and the menu has so many fish and seafood options. Looks like a country for us to visit someday. read more

I had a really nice experience at Sabor Peru this past weekend. I was about to drop my friend off at Tweed, and we came across this place that was conveniently on the way to the airport. We had also both been wanting Peruvian food. Everyone was friendly when we walked in, and the decor was super cute. There were tasteful touches all over the restaurant that made for a cozy, family-friendly vibe. Before we ordered, our server brought over a snack for us that was similar to corn kernels. It was salty and delicious paired with the accompanying green sauce. For my meal, I ordered the chicken pesto spaghetti and my friend ordered the same, except with steak instead of chicken. We each loved our meals. The pasta tasted like it had just been freshly made, and the pesto was so creamy and delicious. The chicken was tender and afterwards I felt like I had such a great comfort meal. I was able to have the other half of my food for dinner the next evening. I would definitely love to come back and try some of their other dishes, like the ceviche. read more

The food was not good for my taste! I got pescado a lo macho and it tasted like a bottle of chili powder was dropped into it. My husband got arroz chaufa and we were not amused either. If you want good Peruvian food I recommend going to Norwalk/Stamford. The serves was good, but the place needs an upgrade. read more

The ceviche was outstanding- and good size portion. We also had Loma and plantain which were decent. The service was friendly and attentive. They apparently only serve Peruvian beer and wine. The decor reminded me of places I've been to in Puerto Rico ... or have seen on TV food shows like Bourdain - very sparse, which keep review at 4 star... not much ambiance read more

Terrible terrible food ordered 3 things and spent 75$ for terrible steak that was low grade low quality and prepared terribly chicken chicharrón was just chicken nuggets French fries were still raw and they gave us 2 pieces of maduros I wish there was a way to give them 0 star rating so disappointed and ripped off such a rip off if you want good Spanish food you're better off going to Saocos in west haven save your money don't visit this terrible place read more

Quick review for take out- my boyfriend LOVED their chaufa de camerones and believe me he is picky. He ate the entire dish. We also got choros ala challaca spicy which were delicious. It all came with a side of yuca which was nice! The green aji sauce was spicy and tasty! Can't wait to try more and eat there. I had higher expectations, specially because it has 4 starts here on yelp but the food could definitely be improved. Mix ceviche was done with cooked fish, the excuse was that it has been seating on the lemon sauce for too long but why make it in advance? Ceviche is done with raw fish and preparation really doesn't take long, so it should be made fresh with each order so that the first doesn't get firm. Also, the steak used in tallarines was way to thin, why ask how we want the steak cooked if its impossible for restaurant to make it rare (to thin). I want to say half of the order was good but the other half was not. read more

The food is good but this is the 3rd time they were really cheap with the meat on the Lomo saltado they cut the steak in small pieces and masked it with a lot of potatoes. They are way to pricey for this kind of service. I will be looking for a new go to spot for Peruvian as I am very disappointed that they did this! read more

This place is pretty freaking good. The service was great, the food was fresh & the owner even brought us a complimentary dish! I'm generally a picky eater, but everything I tried was finger licking good! Lol. The best part about it is that when you receive your place you're smacked with the delicious scent & it's because they make it right then and there. I'd give this place two thumbs up. My Peruvian mom, tia, and grandma all liked the food here. Enough said. In all seriousness, this place is fantastic! The ceviche is top notch and always made with fresh fish. The lomo saltado, bisteck a lo pobre, tallarín verde, and seco de carne are also delicious. I haven't tried a dish I haven't liked. The staff are so friendly and the owner sometimes comes out to say hi & make sure you're enjoying your meal. My Peruvian heart is so happy to have found this place after 2 years of searching for food that tastes like home! read more

This was a very unpleasant visit to this Peruvian restaurant. I have high expectations since I'm from NYC, and this doesn't meet my standards. The dishes were very small and pricey. The family size jalea was the size of a personal and I can't even imagine how small the personal jalea would have looked like. YIKES! Just phenomenal. For me, I love Latin food (spicy too) and seafood. Sabor Perú exceeds the basic plate, it's not fried fish nor is it an American version of another country's meal. Not only did I want to visit Machu Pichu now i have more reason to go to Peru - for the food. read more

Booked it on Groupon for special deal. It was a surprise totally. The tropical fruits smoothie is awesome. The fried seafood was crispy outside and tasty. I rode a bike from downtown New Haven just to get some ceviche here, and I was not disappointed. Practically had the place to myself, but based on the quality of the meal, the place ought to have been packed. I gather the couple running the place are from Peru. This is an amazing restaurant with authentic recipes from generations back. The owners are from a seaside town in Peru so their ceviche is amazing and definitely something to try. Also the fish was yummy, and they use the natural large corn popular in South America. read more

My wife, two kids and I were traveling from NY to visit family in Boston and on the drive we were craving Peruvian food, specifically ceviche. We looked up the best Peruvian restaurants in New Haven and Sabor Peru came up. We were a little skeptical driving up as it's unassuming from the outside and we almost drove past it. However once you go inside you are transported to Peru with wonderful decorations, very clean environment and friendly staff. The food was AMAZING! Everything we ordered was fresh, healthy portions and delicious. We ordered two dishes of the ceviche pescado, the fried plantains, and a shrimp specialty dish. All the vegetables were so fresh and the tomatoes were ripe and delicious. The kids had grilled chicken breast and slices of hotdogs and French fries and they devoured it. We will definitely be coming back next time we are in the area. If you like fresh, authentic and delicious Peruvian food definitely check out Sabor Peru. Well worth it. read more

I ordered a lobster roll, soft shell crab sandwich, clam chowder, and lobster bisque. Everything was pretty good but the sandwiches were a bit pricey. On the menu they're listed as market price and apparently lobster rolls were $22 and soft shell crab sandwiches were $17 that day. We had the soups first since they were ready immediately. The lobster bisque was ok, but a bit too creamy for my taste. I found myself tiring of the taste after several spoonfuls. I much preferred the clam chowder. It had a great consistency and it was served at a perfect temperature. The flavor was on point as well. I really enjoyed the clam chowder. The lobster roll was good, but not great. To be fair, I'm not a huge fan of lobster so take my opinion with a grain of salt. The lobster was fresh, but I found it to be a little bland. I got the sauteed roll, maybe I should've tried the fried. I really liked the soft shell crab sandwich. It literally looked like they took a whole crab and deep fried it then put it in a bun. It worked though. I especially liked it with the tartar sauce. If you're a fan of seafood, you'll like this place.

I came on a Wednesday for the $17.99 lobster roll special and it was easily one of the best I've ever had. It is a quarter pound of lobster and you get actual lumps of claw and meat rather than the shredded stuff some other places serve. The butter it's sautéed in is seasoned delicately to accentuate the fresh lobster instead of covering up the taste. The portion was surprisingly large and it comes on a fresh bun that is lightly buttered and toasted. It even comes with a little cup of extra butter which I totally slathered on because I love butter! Every bite was so fresh and soft. The roll comes with fries and I did the optional $5 upcharge for the lobster bisque. That was also the best I've ever had because I've never seen bisque with such large chunks of lobster in it. It was just crazy good. Everything was well worth the price and I'd honestly come back even on days when it's not a special. They have something going on every night like the $9.99 burger and fries on Mondays, so that will definitely be my next reason to visit. I will be back for sure!
