After wrapping up an event nearby, we drove out to SJ for dinner and randomly found this spot.. perfect timing because we were craving kabobs We went on a Thursday night and it was actually pretty busy! It's a smaller space, so seating is a bit limited. There were also a couple of large groups ahead of us, so the food took a little longer, but honestly, we didn't mind since it made sense. They did run out of bread that night (tragic ), so we'll definitely have to come back for the full experience. We ordered the chicken & koobideh kabob combo and the beef filet kabob, and wow...the kabobs were sooo juicy. The rice was fluffy, everything was flavorful, and it really hit the spot. Overall, we had a great experience and would for sure come back again.

After trying many Persian restaurants in San Jose, this place easily stands out as one of the best. The Sheshlik Kabob was incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor, and the koobideh was perfectly soft and delicious. The restaurant itself is casual and family-friendly, with great service both dining in and for to-go orders. You can really tell they care about quality and consistency. Definitely a hidden gem and an easy 5 stars!

Does size matter? Maybe... What Saba Grill's lamb shank lacked in heft, made up in flavor and texture. One of the most meltingly tender lamb shanks I've had. But more on that later. Saba Grill opened sometime in May 2025 and seems to be a rebrand of Stone Stew's second location. There's a Saba Grill banner outside but we were given Stone Stew's menu (not the Saba one online). Currently open for takeout and indoor dining only. M E N U Persian Cuisine - array of apps/salads, stews, wraps, and kebabs. Halal meats. There's a "weekend breakfast" menu of kale pache (lamb head & trotters) and zaban (lamb tongue) but sadly, the weekend menu wasn't available on Saturday. F O O D * Complimentary Persian Flatbread w/ butter Served warm, the flatbread was crisp on the outside with a good chew. * Lamb Shank w/ baghali polo: Lamb shank, basmati rice, dill, fava beans ($23.99): https://tinyurl.com/m8wf55hs Our fav dish of the two, the slow braised lamb shank was so soft, meltingly tender, and aromatic. Just wish it was meatier. Served with a heaping portion of fluffy baghali polo with a nice tang and sweet nutty flavor from the dill and fava beans. So delicious and comforting. * Koobideh Kabob w/ rice, tomato ($21.99): https://tinyurl.com/bdf5thmz - Requested juicy Unfortunately, the koobideh (ground beef kabob) was quite overdone and dry. It seems the chef sliced into the koobideh to check its doneness resulting in the juices running out. Served with fluffy basmati rice crowned with saffron rice and a juicy charred tomato. S E R V I C E Prompt. A M B I A N C E Cozy and rustic with pops of color; 8 tables and booths. Restroom is outside the building. P A R K I N G Private parking lot. Overall, we really enjoyed the lamb shank and baghali polo. If in the DTSJ area again, we would return for their weekend breakfast menu.

I was saddened to find out about the change of ownership. I certainly liked the hostess that used to work there for her exceptional customer focused service. She knew what my kids liked to eat and would come to confirm with them they still wanted their favorites. Fast forward to now, we walk in and are greeted by a sweet lady with a big smile. We have a nice conversation about the change of ownership and to my surprise, the menu has not changed. Good and bad. Good, because I knew exactly what to order. Bad, because I had hoped they added new items to try. There is a better! Better because the intend we ordered clearly tasted better I mean, I felt like I visited Tehran and was sitting at a friends house enjoying a meal cooked by his sweet grandmother. Now, I would suggested to them to add new menu items and create a following of Persian food addicts. Let be their leader. The restaurant look and feel is the same as before... nice small and cozy little room with about 8-10 tables. Usually it's not too busy and the food tends to come out pretty quickly. Visit this nice little gem in downtown SJ and thank me later. Actually, thank the new owners who are doing a great job! Lots of Algerian love! Cherif

Like the food. Good portion and testy. Nice people. Didn't charge me for extra food. Thanks

Salmon Fish Kebab--can't recommend. Mine was very fishy.

I love Saba Grill, especially their Baghali Polo--dill flavored rice with fava beans! Their chicken breast kebab is also quite good and I like it better than the Chicken Koobideh, which I usually prefer. They give a lot of grilled tomatoes for a cheap price, which is good to eat with the saffron rice. But the Baghali Polo doesn't need it--it's great as is. I also tried the Veggie Kebab, which was unseasoned and had very few mushrooms, too many onions and peppers, and nearly uncooked zucchini, so I can't recommend it. I also can't recommend the Salmon Fish Kebab, because the one I got was very fishy smelling and somewhat fishy tasting. I imagine that was an anomaly, but I won't order that again. I also tried the Veggie Gheimeh Bademjan, but it wasn't quite to my taste. Nothing bad with it, but I was expecting more curry or some flavor to the tomato broth of the stew. And it said baby eggplant, but there was a whole eggplant with stem that I had to take off and chop up before eating. I still recommend Saba Grill though!

This place has free parking in downtown which is a huge plus. The server was nice. The food was okay but it definitely needed a yogurt sauce not sure if they just forgot to give it to me. Plenty of in door seating.

    chicken kabob

Authentic Persian food! So glad to have a spot that reminds me of my family's cooking. We ordered the Chicken and Koobideh kabobs -- both were delicious! The rice was buttery, and the Persian salad brought back childhood memories. Service was quick, prices were reasonable, and while the interior is a bit rustic, it just adds to the charm. It's nice to see mom-and-pop restaurants still going strong.

Both meats were juicy, flavorful, and tender but if I had to pick one it would hands down by the beef steak. One thing to note about the dining experience is that it was uncomfortably hot inside the restaurant. I went on a summer day when it was in the high 80s and the restaurant didn't have AC or a fan... it was a lot warmer inside the restaurant than it was outside. I felt so relieved when I stepped outside.

It did have a lot of sugar, but it was pretty similar flavor-wise to Indian chai (sans milk), so it paired very well with our order. We ordered the chicken suqaar and the beef wrap. We opted for the chapati (sabaayad in Somali) with the chicken suqaar, but would love to try their rice or their version of injera during our next visit! The menu at first glance looks kinda confusing since they have Lunch in big letters on one side with a ton of their dishes and Dinner on the other side with the remainder of the dishes, making it seem like a few items are available during this time... but the Lunch portion just states that it comes with a side of rice, pasta, chapati, or injera (which is the same as Dinner...) so kind of an interesting stylistic choice there, but this is to say that everything on the menu is available the whole time they're open. The meals were so flavorful- the chicken suqaar had a ton of onions, carrots, chicken, green-bean like veggie, and spices, and was served with a green sauce that had kind of a habanero or jalapeno taste to it. The beef wrap was huge and I only ate half of one for dinner- it was flavored so well and the beef was cooked perfectly. This came with a side of the green sauce and a white sauce. I'd love to return and try their injera with chicken, kay kay chicken, beef suqaar or beef steak, and their sambusas! I saw some on another diner's plate and it looked sizable and filling. Jubba is located right next to a VTA light rail and an apartment complex so there's decent foot traffic, but overall, a wonderful place to try and eat!

I finally decided to give it a try after hearing about the restaurant from food reviewer Dave fiore text. As someone who absolutely loves tacos and is always on the hunt for great local taco spots, I was excited to see how this place compared to some of my favorites. I ordered four different tacos, and overall, they were pretty good. They weren't bad by any means, but they also didn't quite blow me away. The meat was cooked well, the tortillas were fresh, and the tacos had good flavor. The salsa was decent too, although I personally prefer something with a little more kick. Everyone has different tastes, so this is just my opinion. One thing I really appreciated was how clean and organized the restaurant was. You can tell they take pride in keeping the dining area nice and welcoming. The staff was friendly, and my food came out quickly. It's always a good sign when a restaurant pays attention to both cleanliness and customer service. I've eaten at a lot of taco places throughout the Bay Area, so I naturally compare every new place to some of my favorites. While El Halal Mexican Restaurant didn't make the top of my list, I still had a good experience and I'm glad I finally gave it a shot. Not every restaurant has to be your favorite to be worth visiting. I also like supporting family-owned businesses because I know how much hard work goes into running a local restaurant. They deserve credit for creating a clean, welcoming place and serving quality food. Will I come back? Maybe. If I do, I'd probably try something different on the menu instead of the tacos. Sometimes a restaurant's best dish isn't the first thing you order, and I'd be interested in seeing what else they have to offer. Overall, I'd give El Halal Mexican Restaurant a solid 4 out of 5 stars. It was a good experience, I'm happy I finally got to try it, and if you're in the Willow Glen area, it's worth stopping by and deciding for yourself.

Over the times that we've visited, we've tried their manakish, shawarma bowls, shawarma wraps, and baklava. - Manakish - We've tried their lahm bajin and their tri tip shawarma manakish. Their lahm bajin manakish is a classic/more traditional manakish. Their ingredient list may seem simple, but it's full of good flavors and they do not skimp on the toppings. Their tri tip shawarma manakish is something we'd recommend if you're not feeling to adventurous and want to stick with more basic/modern flavors. They also don't skimp on the toppings with this one. Expect the manakish to be thin like NY thin crust pizza, but maybe more soft/doughy. Portion-wise, one manakish can probably be 1-2 people, unless you're super hungry. - Shawarma bowls - We've tried their tri tip shawarma bowls. Each bowl is loaded with a good portion of rice, meat, salad, and pickles. There's definitely enough meat to pair with each spoonful of rice. The bowls are again, very flavorful and not too oily, which I appreciate. - Shawarma wraps - We've tried their tri tip shawarma wraps. Each wrap is filled with similar ingredients in the tri tip shawarma bowl and manakish, except it's in a wrapped form. The wrap is still loaded with good flavor with every bite. We've always had ours paired with a side of fries. Their fries taste fresh and doesn't have a hint of being frozen/previously frozen. - Baklava - We've tried their pistachio and walnut baklava. Even though the baklava is sitting in the dessert fridge, each piece tasted fresh. The phyllo dough was still fluffy with many layers even tough it was full of honey (yum!). They have a lot of seating indoors and some seating outdoors. If you're waiting for your to-go orders, they have water available. They also have a restroom for customers. All the times that we've picked up food, the restaurant has been kept very clean and neat. They have a small parking lot, and we've usually been able to snag a spot (except one time). Other parking options are street parking on the same side of the store or opposite the store (in the residential area or near the Salvation Army Thrift Store).

It was such a delicious mouthful that I was really wishing I'd gotten the full size after all! It's better that I didn't, and now I can't wait to go back again and try more things, like the shawarma fries! Parking can be difficult so be prepared to hunt and maybe walk a bit. The staff was all woman and while they weren't chatty, they were all diligently doing prep, which is necessary. I honestly can't wait for the chance to come back soon!

The beef and lamb arabi style wrap portion is pretty big. I got seasoned fries for the side and we were given a lot. I'm a big fan of the double fried fries or the so-called psoriasis fries. There was a good balance of crispy and mushy fries. Tastes really good with the toum and the tahini sauce. The wrap is a bit dry but the flavors are still good. I think I do prefer the chicken over the beef/lamb mainly for the tahini sauce. The service is kind of just ok. I didn't know you were supposed to grab the sides from the fridge and they didn't tell me until I had to go back and ask. The whole interaction just felt a bit awkward but I'm sure they were also just tired. The place could be a bit tidier and cleaner. There's also no public restroom for those wondering but they have hand sanitizer stations set up which is nice. Parking is not too difficult but I haven't been when it's peak hours.
