Wasabi Scallop Maki

Hanging out in Montreal for business and it's dinnertime! I'm a huge fan of dining downtown because there are just so many choices so close to each other and it just makes things easy! Here's how dining at Ryú went! Atmosphere/Appearance: This place is BEAUTIFUL. It's an elongated restaurant with the most awesomely decorated ceiling. I wish I knew what all the 3D wooden crosses represented, but they were so cool. The bar rail/sushi counter stretches almost the entire length of the restaurant and looks so modern/futuristic. I can't stop harping on how much I loved the aesthetics in here. Service: Julie took excellent care of us as we sat at the sushi counter. Everyone knows that the bar rail or sushi counter is the best seat in the house! Lol. However, the food did take an excessively long time for some reason. Luckily the couple of Suntory Toki Whiskeys had me chilled out. Food: I'm a huge fan of when restaurants create unique Maki rolls so I checked out 2 today! First up was the Truffle Salmon Maki. In it is salmon, shiitake mushrooms, avocado, black tobiko, truffle oil, nori and spicy mayo. I didn't taste much truffle and there was a lot more shiitake in it than I had expected. However, the roll was still excellent and I could tell it was made with a high-level of skill. Next up was the Wasabi Scallop Maki. In my opinion this roll was better. It was a bit smoother, had a good bite from the wasabi and just worked better together. Value: ALL PRICES ARE IN $CAD. A "pour" of the whiskey I had was $18.00. The salmon maki was $19.00 and the scallop maki was $23.00. Absolutely worth it. The food is high-grade, filling and "felt" authentic, though I have never been to Japan. Lol. In conclusion, I loved it here and will absolutely be making another visit whenever I'm back in Montreal! Check this place out if you're in the area!

Late meal after a great day trip. Beautiful ambiance inside and a very pleasant greeting, with your choice of distilled or sparkling water. We decided to keep it simple for a late night snack, and got the miso soup which was perfect with the seaweed and green onions. Then came a surprise, the salmon tartare tacos was dynamite, crunchy shell and the slither of jalapeño pepper on top was out of this world. The shiitake shiitake roll was another first, and just as amazing as the tacos, the creaminess of the avocado made this dish even better. And what can you say about the rainbow roll, just a perfect mix of salmon and tuna. Great Meal.

The Peel location is right in heart of downtown. It's an upscale sushi place inside and also the summer patio when they have it out. Food - (4/5) - it's bit overpriced but definitely good quality. Had multiple selections including sashimi maki and sushi. All were fresh and good presentation. Hamachi Baby maki was an interesting creative item. Service - (3.5/5) - it was afternoon so not as busy as evening but I could sense the servers aren't as responsive as other places of this level. Friendly enough though. Atmosphere- (4.25/5) - it's a nice layout and upscale tables bar and decor. Good for couples and groups. Outdoor patio is good. Overall - (4/5) - it's a good quality sushi restaurant that's for sure. Maybe not the best value but I would repeat.

Final Meal Stop on the 1100 mile Jon Batiste, Uneasy Tour, Toronto/Montreal Stops Road Trip!! I drove into Montreal the afternoon before from Toronto see Jon Batiste at MTelus (YIKES! I was pretty sure that place might collapse on our heads during the concert...). Spent the night and (of course!) I decided to have lunch in Montreal before heading back south to Vermont. So I looked for a sushi/Japanese spot. Because thats my fave. And Montreal did seem to have a Japanese "presence."... "Seemed" being the operative word here.... Look. I'm that person who spends actual TIME doing all my due diligence/online research regarding everywhere I'm going to be dining out and I did all that for Montreal and I chose Ryu. I looked at photos and menus online. Place seemed legit. But, then again, this would be my first foray into Montreal sushi... And I should say that Ryu is my ONLY foray into Montreal Sushi. But I am here to say that Ryu is NOT legit. I don't know if Ryu is representative of the Montreal sushi scene ?? I hope not. Because that would not be a good situation. Ryu is located right in the beautiful downtown area near the Cathedral etc. Gorgeous. Street full of restaurants full of business people on their lunch. It was given Upper East Side... So my expectations were kinda high. They should not have been. Ryu is GORGEOUS. Beautifully designed interior! Except for the bathroom?? That was fine entering - since the door pushed in. But the space is tiny and then you need to figure out how to pull that door in AND somehow fit yourself beside the sink...??? This is NOT a "larger bodied" safe space and that is NOT OKAY...DO BETTER QUEBEC. #eyeroll The thing is they've expended all their energy/capital on the gorgeous design of this spot and they're cutting corners on the food. Which is super not cool. BECAUSE it was such a beautiful looking place I ordered Avocado Tacos. Because I "assumed" they were using legit, fresh ingredients. They are not. I took one bite and realized they'd used "pre-smashed" avocado and some sort of horrible, premade taco shell. Awful. That was the only bite I took. I set them aside. They deleted them from my bill. Bar food. For drunk people. Yuck. I pressed on. As on does. Got the seaweed salad. Because it had so many "additional ingredients" I didn't think it would be predominantly store bought seaweed salad. It was predominantly store bought seaweed salad... They denote the type of salmon on their menu for each item. So I asked what kind of salmon was in the handroll. "Atlantic" Which means that they're using the most basic, terrible, factory farmed Salmon from Chile for most of their dishes and I just cannot stress how GROSS that is. The worst quality fish. In this spot passing itself off as super fancy. They told me I could get the good salmon on a handroll. I also got a Shiitake handroll. Which may have been the best thing I had at Ryu. DELICIOUS. I cannot recommend Rye. All show. No substance. Typical chain type restaurant just trying to turn a profit and cut corners wherever possible. Those tacos tho. SHOCKINGLY HORRENDOUS. Sports stadium type snacks...NO.

Cute place with very good drinks! Didn't get a photo of the sushi, but everything was very fresh and good quality. A little pricey, but that's to be expected in a downtown touristy area. The service was good and the drinks even better (see picture). Overall, the ambiance was nice. Next time, I'll sit inside to admire the cool ceiling!

RYU SUSHI . . Located in the heart of downtown Montreal, Ryu Peel is a intimate sushi spot perfect perfect for a date night. The restaurant offers a variety of sashimi, sushi, rolls, and sake. There's even an omakase experience as an option. . . 12pc Sashimi Platter 12pc Nigiri Platter x2 Bluefin Toro Cut Roll x2 $$$ Food: 4.5/5 Service: 3/5 Overall: 4/5 . . The sashimi and sushi we ordered were all very fresh and delicious. I loved every single piece we had. We ordered two nigiri platters and got different fish in both platters. Really appreciated this. My favourite was the Kampachi, Chu-toro and O-toro. Service was OK. Our server got our order wrong twice even though he double confirmed with us? We ordered 2 of the blue fin otoro handroll and got cut rolls instead. Ordered 2 nigiri platters and only got 1 initially. The dishes also came out really slow considering the restaurant wasn't even packed. Regardless, the sushi was very yummy.

sushi tacos, kale salad and a spicy margarita

calm ambiance with delicious food. The service was fantastic. We tried a variety of dishes and opted for the chef to build us a maki platter. Wise choice. My favourite was the sushi taco. Tuna with avocado and the taco was a crispy rice shell. Very tasty. Our cocktail was a spicy margarita. The flavour was a mandarins base. So fresh tasting and easy to drink. Had a great night.

The sashimi platter with 12 excellent pieces.

Food was fantastic. The sashimi12 pc set I had was exquisite. Great quality fish, good variety in the selection, served elegantly. Price of CA$55 was a bit steep I thought, and had to get a smaller two roll sushi roll (rainbow) to add. Here the fish was definitely of a lower quality, not bad, but not like the previous one. The double roll for Ca$24 was also somewhat steep in price. Had a beer and water. The total bill was CA$120+tip =CA$140. Not knowing what else was around I walked in to this in downtown Montreal On my first evening there. Later came to know of some very good other restaurants which are typically half priced. Somewhat disappointing but I recall can't complain about the over all good fish I had there. The service was excellent, the waitress was patient and explained the menu very nicely although it was mostly in Japanese and French. Ambiance on a Thursday night: very nice, low lighting, young folks mostly in groups of 2-6. Quiet conversations and enjoyable get together sis what I saw. I would go there again but would only have their expensive dishes. They are superb.

One star for decor and one star for food quality. Stars removed for service, pricing, and portions. I got the 12 piece nigiri platter, which had 6 types of fish: salmon, hamachi, sea bream, spanish mackerel, albacore tuna, and sea bass. The platter ran me $55, and for $105, you could get the premium 12 pc nigiri platter with fish imported from japan. The nigiri comes lightly brushed with soy sauce and a dab of fresh REAL wasabi, which explains some of the price tag. I thought the nigiri were too small (they're finger width thin) but at least the fish-to-rice ratio was actually good! The rice was textbook: well seasoned; holds together but you can still distinguish individual grains of rice. My favourite fish were the sea bream and sea bass, the firm flesh was well balanced with the fatty skin. The tuna texture was a bit mushy so it was meh. I expected each piece to be excellent so I was disappointed. The decor of the resto was aesthetic and the vibes were great for a foodies dinner out. Anyways, the sushi itself was good, but it was definitely pricy (the 6 piece maki rolls cost ~$20 and it's not even that special) Speaking of foodies, one of my friends told the server we were all food bloggers and the manager behaved quite oddly. He took out a box of uni and told us to take photos of it and tag them. Then he proceeded to joke for us to eat it, then took away the box. He also wanted us to take photos of their other food that they weee preparing for the other customers. All of this without compensation. Also, the server kept asking if we wanted to order more or dessert (because the portions were so small I doubt anyone was full). We had to wait for a while to get the bill.

Great food. A little pricey but honestly so worth it! It was one of the best rolls I've ever had but now that I am thinking about it both were fantastic! The drink was great, fun ambiance, quick service, and my server was very pleasant. Plan to go again

A tiny sushi spot in downtown beautiful inside though. Service pretty slow from the preparing part. The waiter was very amiable but when asked question about portion or recommendation, he seemed clueless. I got the California Maki; it's very small portion. I did ask the waiter about portion and if it would enough for lunch. He said he thinks so; I guess he thought I was too big, I must not eat too much... . The dish was good but not enough; and I didn't feel to order more since the prep time takes so long (30 minutes for my tiny dish). My dish came about 20$ (tax and tips included), which was very steep. After I left, I just picked a latte to fill the rest of of my hunger.

Lobster makis and all fish available for sashimi except for the white tuna + grass fed beef nigiri and sea urchin nigiri (delivered)
Geneviève F.

The quality of most sushi was 5/5, but some pieces we got were disappointing and the portion size is very small for the price. I wish they would give us / let us buy at least extra rice so that we aren't left still hungry by the end of a 100$ meal/person. THE GOOD The best sashimi I've eaten in Montreal! (except the salmon, more on that below) The quality and range of fish available is simply wonderful. The Otoro is amazing. Beautiful presentation. I am convinced that my exploring the (pricey) menu, I would find the perfect line-up of fish to order for it to be a 5-star meal. Unfortunately... THE DISAPPOINTING It seems we got 'bad cuts' of the salmon (tip of the fish) so they were presented in 'round shapes' instead of regular. Clearly they knew this cut was different as it was even presented different. Those 4 salmon sashimi pieces were unfortunately not very good and chewy. The lobster rolls weren't very tasty. It's a shame. I wish it had given me the 5-star experience I know it can reach. Plz give/sell a little rice/filler :)

Sigh, I am a bit conflicted with what to rate this place. The food was delicious, all the sushi tasted very fresh and tender. Despite enjoying the food, a couple factors regarding service completely underwhelmed my experience: First, BRO ... tell me why the portions are SO SMALL and the price point SO BIG? At all "classier" sushi restaurants I've been to have ALWAYS offered ginormous special maki rolls but the portions at Ryu is just sad. The sushi rolls are as small as the rolls at AYCE sushi restaurants.. so you're telling me I am paying almost $15-$20 for 6 tiny sushi maki rolls. The "special" ingredients to the small sushi rolls are not worth the price regardless, I find it rather ridiculous really. Ryu is WYLIN'. I have never felt so ripped off in a sushi restaurant LMFAO! Second, the service is slow. Like, HELLA SLOW. I'm very easy-going and often don't mind waiting for my food, but it was just so ridiculously and noticeably slow. I will give them the benefit of the doubt that it was just super packed and they were backed up with orders. Though I've been to plenty of busy restaurants and never had to wait this long for my food, even when we were given notice that there would be a wait. My friends and I had all the time in the world, but when you are a group of 5 eating one dish every 20 minutes (most dish is basically 1-2 pieces per person), it doesn't even seem like a proper dinner anymore.. more like us grabbing snacks. The entire meal didn't even touch our stomachs because the portions were so small and the wait periods between each dish were so long.. we had to grab something elsewhere following our dinner at Ryu to satisfy our hunger. Expensive night and we were still as hungry leaving Ryu when we entered.. does that seem worth it even if the food was good? A positive note though, our server did provide very helpful recommendations with the menu and our tables were cleared quickly by another worker. Other than that, service was nothing out of the ordinary. Our server wasn't as enthusiastic as you'd expect servers to be though and for a restaurant with such high prices and classy atmosphere I'd expect him to be. But with the lack of notice/apology for the slow service we received, I wasn't really surprised. Combining these two factors together with 5 hungry people doesn't make for a pleasant experience. I somewhat understand if they were so backed up with food orders, but they should take some responsibility for it and inform their paying customers. I've worked in the industry for a few years and one very important lesson I learned that I think Ryu needs to consider for the future: Good service will almost always make up for bad food... but bad service will never make up for good food. This describes my experience at Ryu perfectly.. no matter how good the food was, my friends and I just couldn't bring ourselves to enjoy our food in its entirety because of the service. If you are willing to wait and aren't too hungry, Ryu would be a good choice.. if you don't mind spending big bucks either. All in all, definitely not on my list of restaurants to return to when I'm in the area.

Even during peak summer season the restaurant was crowded and even had a line starting to form at peak lunch hour. There are not very many large tables so don't expect a large group to be sitting together. The menu is pretty straightforward with the typical miso, tonkotsu, and shoyu broths. But they even have a tomato broth with Hokato scallops for those more adventurous. We ordered the Tonkotsu Black $19 & the Tonkotsu+ $19. Is it pricey for Ramen? Yes. But was it worth it? Yes. The Tonkotsu Black had a rich broth with prominent garlic oil. The Tonkotsu+ was really the show stopper. With 3 different styles of meat: Smoked pork pastrami, meatballs & chashu. The truffle oil was fragrant and earthy. But the biggest surprise was shiitake mushrooms. They were marinated/seasoned to perfection, with a hint of sweetness. I would've been happy with just a giant bowl of shiitake mushrooms, and truffle oil. The broth was much lighter and delicate than the Tonkotsu Black, yet strong on the truffle. If you're not really a fan of truffle, do not get this. We were tempted to go back again, but we opted to try other restaurants around the downtown area. 10/10 Would go back again! Once seated, things happen very quickly...it is go, go, go (in the best possible way.) Green beans were everyone's fave, but I have to mention the (pickled?) vegetables on the salad. So flavourful! Also tried the egg drop soup which is so tasty. Mains were the salmon tuna bowl, the beef short ribs, the shrimp burger, and 48 hour pork with curry sauce. Everything was wonderful! I placed a to go order for one of the daily specials, the grilled sea bass with sushi rice and salad, with some kimchi. I also ordered the BBQ chicken with tortilla and salad, as well as vegetable gyoza. Everything was incredible. Truly. The gyoza came topped with green onions and was SO crispy and hot and was perfect with their soy sauce. I thought sea bass was wonderful with a unique almost smoky flavor that melted in my mouth paired with the slightly sweet sticky rice. The barbecue chicken was great as well and better the next day. One thing I don't really understand is why they served plain flour tortillas cut into quarters with their food. We didn't utilize this, nor the white butter/mayo sauce that came alongside it. I hope to eat here often, for years to come and am so happy to see this iconic Japanese restaurant still thriving years later.
