I've been to Rusty's multiple times, and they hands down have some of the best burgers in Charlotte. Everything is always fresh, hot, and made just right. The service is consistently good, and the food comes out quick. I also love that you can order a half portion of fries instead of a full order--small detail, but it makes a difference. Their menu has a little bit of everything, but the burgers are definitely the star. They also run daily specials (I tried the cordon bleu sandwich on a special day, and it was really good). They have outdoor seating, which is a nice bonus, especially on a good weather day. Overall, it's a solid 10/10. If you're looking for a great burger--or just good food, period--Rusty's is absolutely worth checking out. read more

Experience: This is a no frills, step back in time deli that has a strong 80's vibe. I don't know that it has been updated since the 80's, it feels old. The sandwiches are classic, fresh, and good. It gets busy during lunch, I think they've retained all the customers since the 80's. I love their tuna steak sandwich because it's fresh and not too salty. It is best with a sauce added, since it's a bit dry without one. The bun tastes healthy in the best way. The burger is also classic and hearty. I stopped in for lunch, and WOW, SO packed! From the crowd size, my expectations grew. I remember enjoying their Cheesesteak Sub from WAY back...but for one reason or another, I haven't been back for a long time. So I ordered their Cheesesteak and Fries again. Again, my expectations were huge...given my nostalgic memory and the crowd size. Unfortunately, the foods didn't quite meet it. The Cheesesteak Sub was good...but a bit short from great. Maybe it's just me and my Asian taste buds, but the sub just tasted too bland. I poured a ton of hot sauce, yet still, Meh. It was the right amount of greasy...not dry, but not too much (which I really don't care for!). The Fries, however, were solid. I'm not a huge fan of fries anymore either...but these were really good versions. I've been craving a good Cheesesteak, so I'm glad I revisited...and am glad they're still doing good business. We went to Rusty's today because it looked good and the prices were reasonable. I ordered a Reuben with a small ice tea and my wife had a turkey/ham sandwich and a sweet tea. No sides ordered but the came with a small pickle wedge. I should have known when I looked at the menu board and there were no prices listed but I had looked online at their website menu and the sandwiches were listed both for just under 10 dollars. So tell me why my bill came to $37.78?plus a tip?? Sorry but $21 dollars for just two sandwiches and a drink is crazy. Don't get me wrong , they were really good. But definitely not worth the price. This is one of the best burgers in Charlotte in my opinion! It's an old school joint that has been around since the 80s and they serve up delicious sandwiches along with burgers and classic deli sides including a delicious potato salad. I have been going to Rusty's for over 25 years. Food was normally good. No major complaints. My wife and I have been ordering the same menu item for years. When the ownership changed some years ago we were not very happy with the new prices and food wasn't as good (in our opinion). Started charging for small extras that we normally were not charged for. We understood and kept going. Tonight was a different story. Got a takeout order of our regular menu item and was not happy when I was charged too much for a small add on that we've been charged extra for In the past. It was double what I normally pay. I told the manager and he said abruptly that was the price. End of discussion. It was not the amount that I was charged, it was the way he handled it( or didn't handle it). I was very unhappy the way he handled the situation. I will not be going back. I also will tell my friends this happened and I'm sure they will think twice before going there. This is a really nice out-of-the-way burger joint and has a reputation of having the best french fries in Charlotte. I tried the grilled chicken sandwich and my dad got the mushroom and Swiss burger. Both of them were cooked perfectly were juicy and had a great taste. The staff was very very friendly and accommodating. I was a loyal Rusty's customer since it opened, but no more. The new owners have ruined it and it's pretty obvious it's all in the name of savings pennies and trying to be quicker, but certainly not better. For starters, Rusty's had large napkins and logoed drinking cups. Those are gone, and these little things were the obvious 'tells' that someone new was running it. Ok, let's get to the food. French fry portions cut in half, perhaps. And my favorite, the French Dip used to be far better than the fancy sit down restaurant in the same center. No more. Instead of toasting the sandwich, giving the bread a little crunch, they now microwave it to death. Last night was the last straw. I had a terrible French Dip a month ago and felt it was microwaved, but cast it away as a one-off. I ordered the French Dip. It came and to my amazement it was so over microwaved and utterly scalding to the touch that I had to wait at least 5 minutes to taste it. It wasn't worth tasting. We all know what happens to bread in the microwave. This was the death of a sub roll. It was so over the top bad and mushy. The roast beef was still medium rare. The fries were as good as they were for years, just maybe half the portion. I overheard the table next to me saying, "What happened to the fries? This is half what I expected.". So, with these many changes in my face, I asked last night if the ownership had changed. The answer was an abrupt, matter of fact 'Yes'. It was so blatantly obvious to me, as someone who went to Rusty's almost weekly for years, seeing Pete at the helm and a trained staff that knew the menu. This staff knew nothing of the menu, even with a printed menu board right there at the cash register. I won't be going back. To the new owners, you took a fun, decent grill concept and ruined it. I'm pretty sure you think cutting the napkins, and drinking cups wouldn't be noticed, that this savings was a good idea. It's not. The terrible microwaving has probably ruined not just the French Dip but many other items. The old Rusty's would have never microwaved the French Dip. You bought the restaurant for a reason, and need to realize these 'little things' and 'microwaving' matter. And now, you're just a no-good deli. The new Rusty's won't thrive like this. read more

Since Rusty's changed ownership the changes have been small, but I feel like it's just not Rusty 's anymore. I attempted to have my favorite tonight; a Rusty Burger, half fries and a coke. The coke was flat out of the machine, my burger no longer had a good texture or beefy taste-- lower quality meat for sure. The normally perfectly toasted bun was warmed, but not toasty. I ordered a half fry which was rung as a "whole fry" with no comment at all.... On top of that the fries were over cooked, greasy and not crunchy. Sorry guys but you've lost a customer. read more

First time at Rusty's, and boy have I been missing out. My late grandpa used to always talk about this place, and now I know why. They have a broad range of menu items, and they have weekday specials. This place can get busy but the tables are first come, first serve and they turn fast. There won't be a long wait unless you see it out of the door. The South Charlotte cheesesteak with beef and mushrooms added was phenomenal. I'd say top two of the ones I have had in Charlotte. The bread is definitely wasn't made it. Crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. The Reuben was delicious too - sooo cheesy. The burgers were large and flavorful, with plenty of bacon on it. Went for the first time Saturday and it definitely won't be my last. I got the Ruben and was so happy with my selection. The bread was buttery and toasted perfectly, the flavorful meat and BEAUTIFULLY melted cheese made for a perfect cheese pull. I went around 1pm in a Saturday and the service was so quick and kind. A nice little sandwich shop nestled in the Quail Corners shopping center, Rusty's deli has a lot of hot and cold sandwiches to satisfy a variety of tastes. I stopped by to pick up a sandwich to go, the chicken salad on a croissant sounded like a good choice. The croissant was very soft and fresh, and the chicken salad was meaty and savory. Not the best chicken salad I've ever had, but it was good and it was satisfying. Their potato salad was excellent. It provided a creamy and vinegary wave of flavor that hit and all the right ways. There is a cozy almost used bookstore kind of feel to this little shop. You order at the counter and the food can be eaten inside the restaurant or taken to go. Not a bad spot for lunch, or a dinner. Some of the best chicken salad you'll ever have! They catered for our meetings with a large telecommunications company for many years and always try to drop in and get my fix right from the source. I'm a native Charlottean and I used to walk to quail corners as a kid to eat here. While I haven't been back in a bit I did take my 88 year old father here for lunch today because he raved about the cheesesteak sub. He said he and my mom came every other week. He also went on about how my mom loved the chicken salad and that was her go to so that's what I ordered. A chicken salad sandwich on white toast with no lettuce or tomato with mayo. Out comes a chicken salad sandwich on white bread. His wasn't much better. Steak'um with cheese might have been a better summation. I understand this 42 year old staple in this area was sold to new owners. Just had take out from Rusty's because my Mom loves their burger. I ordered a black bean burger because I loved them in the past. They obviously have changed their recipe because it was terrible. One of those moments where it is best to actually write the review while you're enjoying the food! Stopped next door at the UPS store to send off a couple of last-minute packages and noticed this establishment next-door so I decided to try it out. Now, I haven't eaten lunch all day, so I know this is probably a biased interview, but that being said, the burger and fries are definitely legit! They had a little diced onions to the burger, which definitely takes it to the next level. But overall it's a pretty straightforward and simple approach with a sesame seed bun and a pickle spear in a boot. Fries were nice and crispy and hot and don't taste like they have just been re-warmed and thrown on the plate. Really appreciated the service as well because I was stuck between the Philly cheesesteak and a burger, and they recommended the burger. There was half the meat than several months ago and the bread was so tough I could barely bite into it. What a great little accidental find. I had the Carolina Club and fries...sounds easy enough but man people screw clubs up all the time.
