I used to live in Dallas, where this chain had quite a few restaurants that were never empty, but I never heard anyone talking about them. Conceptually, I feel like they're an inferior version of Torchy's Tacos--a chain that is sadly missing in Minnesota. They ever have a few rip offs of one of Torchy's signature items (a chicken finger in a tortilla). Because it's hard to find decent Mexican anywhere in the Twin Cities, I'm willing to live with Rusty. Their breakfast tacos are actually really good, although they aren't open during breakfast, unfortunately. The other food is inconsistent. And so is the service. And the wait times. And I'm sure they're dealing with staffing issues like everyone else, so it's hard to hold that against a place. But when the food is already just kind of alright, it can be frustrating to also have it served up slow and not know whether or not that sour cream they upcharged you for is going to actually be in the bag. read more

Love the food. Thats the only thing I can say unfortunately. It is made hot to order but not always consistent portion sizes or potato preparation for the breakfast egg/potato taco. Also comes very greasy at times. It is affordable but never seen a clean location. I had JUST added this to my list of places to try this year before I realized it was less than ten minutes away! So, like anyone who skipped lunch would do, I abandoned my post at work to go try these tacos. What I loved: The Tacos are BOMB. They are tiny (way smaller than I thought) but they are incredibly good. I had the crispy shrimp taco and the fried chicken taco. Next time someone asks what food I would take with me on a deserted island I'm choosing these tacos. So, there you go. The staff was quick and friendly. The guy helping me walked me through some of the different types of tacos and they were ready within 5 minutes of the time I ordered. They also have lots of places to sit so I was able to snag a little corner table and eat my tacos in peace which was a plus for me! What I didn't love: I snuck in a margarita (shhh) and it was a bit strong for my taste. I like my alcohol without the taste of alcohol if you know what I mean. If I had more time I would've finished it, but it wouldn't be my margarita place of choice. I also REALLY wish the tacos were bigger! When I looked at the menu I was amazed at the calorie count until I realized I probably would need to eat at LEAST four of them to be really satisfied. We used to love this place and we keep giving them "one more chance" despite the service that has been wildly unpredictable at best over the past few years (the service issues started prior to COVID, though obviously the pandemic didn't help). Tonight was our official last chance - I waited an additional 45 minutes longer than the online confirmation quoted, without anyone checking on my order or name, and without even a "thanks for waiting" or "sorry about the wait." That would have been enough of a frustration but when I got home they forgot to add the guacamole in my order and gave us different tacos than what we'd ordered. Luckily we have no allergies so we'll eat them anyway but overall it was a disappointing experience. Awful! We tried it for a second time hoping it would be better than our first in fall 2020. The food took forever to come out (I would say the restaurant was roughly half full). Our food was COLD! My two kids meals were literally cold to the touch. Our five tacos we ordered, only 1 wasn't cold and thankfully that was the one that tasted good - Uptown Taco. Stopped in for a quick lunch with the family. Seemed like we interrupted the employee meal time and the place was not busy at all. Food took a little long, but we didn't mind assuming everything was going to be coming out fresh. Worst food I have ever encountered in the past 30 years. Takeout order of beef taco, pork taco, and chicken taco. Beef was charred black, hard and dry as dog food; no taste. Chicken and pork dry and overcooked. Soft shell was hard with cracked stale edges. Tiny tacos, cold and uninviting. Taco Bell on its worst day could never be as bad as this. Stopped in at Rusty Taco for a quick lunch on a Monday. It wasn't super busy, so we were able to sit and get our food in reasonable time. I ordered the Steak Fajita, Crispy Fish, and Grilled Shrimp. The Steak taco was huge! It was almost too difficult to eat handheld. The steak itself was kind of dry, so I wasn't a huge fan of that. The fish and shrimp tacos were decent, but nothing special. So, actually, I ended up with 5 tacos because they messed up my order. I didn't receive my fish taco, so they ended up giving me two more fish tacos and told me to keep the crispy shrimp they mistakenly gave me. They messed up the orders of the 3 other people I was with as well, so I don't know how that happens when it wasn't super busy. read more

Tacos are for everyday not just Tuesday! I love these little street tacos, because I love me some variety! So with one meal I can have pork, shrimp, fish, and chicken in individual little bundles. Now don't get me wrong, I keep typing little, but there is nothing little about them. They pack in the flavors, ingredients, and fill you up fast! Their guacamole is OK. The chips are pretty good. Just save your calories for those magical ! I love that they are served on mini soft and warm corn tortillas. If you're a gringo at heart you can swap them out for flour ones. I finally tried their Texican which is super gringo and didn't love the spices. My go to taco choice is always carnitas or pork of any kind. And they do them right here! #2 is fa bomb! Traditional south of the border, ole! My second faves are the shrimp and fish ones. The sauce though! So good! Buckets to go please! Plus they have Mexican Coke and Jarrito's in bottles to drink! The tacos are ok. A bastion of mediocrity in the twin cities taco scene. There are a couple from the menu that stand out as decent tacos like the dynamite shrimp taco. Other that that, honestly, skip this place. The reason this review is 1 star because of 3 stars is the queso. It is almost a crime to call what yellow beer-cheeseesque sewage slop that they consider to be "queso". Plastic nacho cheese from TBell is miles better that this stuff. Plastic cheese and RotTel would be a rarified delicacy compared to this crap. The chef that came up with this queso recipe should be ashamed of themselves. I actually want an explanation. The cheese is grainy (assume they don't know how to properly mix in a carb for the sauce) , the flavor is like a sweet beer cheese (don't be mistaken, NOT a sweet beer cheese in the, 'Ope, that's SWEET!' kind of way), and to top it all off there is zero spice (ketchup mixed with honey is spicier than this queso). I will reiterate, the chef who makes this and calls this queso is a disgrace and should not cook food. Let's clear the air for a second, I'm all for alternative takes on traditional cuisine. But an alternative take needs to be less like something I'd find festering in a dumpster and more of something that resembles food. read more

Worst taco experience of my life. Took an hour to get 6 tacos to go, which were cold even before we got outside. Heavy on the mayo, light on flavor. Bean and egg taco missing the beans, cauliflower taco (cold, uncooked?) is an experiment that should have been banned by international convention by now. Shirts suggest this is the place to go in queso emergency, but what if my emergency is giant chunks of unmelted cheese in my queso? Taco lovers have a decent joint to visit right here, but don't expect to be knocked out of your socks. The tacos I tried were very tasty, but some of them a tad bland (the Picadillo, for example). While most did not require any sauce, adding it really did not do much to enhance the flavor, and in my opinion detracted from the original taste. They approach authenticity, but don't quite reach it. Far superior to fast food, on the other hand. Price wise, I'm not sure two and a half or three dollars is worth a single taco, but perhaps I may feel otherwise if I tried others. And make sure that you're dressed warmly if you visit during winter. The day I was there, it honestly felt like they had the windows open, and I'm fairly certain my beer would have remained cold regardless the length of my visit. No lids for the drink cups, employee says he ordered them but they're not in yet. Don't believe for a moment this delusional owner I see in the comments lets this poor guy order anything. Anyhow, after ordering, we wait a fair bit longer than I expect for a quick service joint, even though there seems to be adequate staff & the restaurant isn't busy. Food finally arrives. Gringo taco isn't great, says my pops. I had three rusty tacos - pineapple on there was wonderful, but the pork is dry & the tortillas taste very bland. Meanwhile, my folks are trying to stomach down some chicken nachos & it looks like someone spewed all other the plate! Just not a sound operation. I am standing in the restaurant currently after waiting easily 30+ minutes for my small to-go order. Other people are getting refunds. The guy next to me is a first time R Taco customer and asked "does it always take this long??" People are complaining they will be late to get back to work. On top of all of this, the employees are not showing any sense of urgency, or apologizing or doing anything to keep the growing crowd happy or updated. Ahhhh Rusty Taco. From opening day, I was hyped for you. Peak hours are consistently a challenge in balancing service but food prep tends to be speedy. I have been to Rusty Taco too many times to count. The roasted pork taco is to die for - yet everything else I have ordered has been underwhelming. So lets make this review comprehensive! 1. Roasted pork taco - delicious. Only one time have I left disappointed as the meat was dry. Every other time, it has been juicy, delicious, and perfectly packed with flavor. And I do not like pork on any normal occassion. The pickled onions really add the right zest. Authentic taco truck taste right here! The size seems small upon first glance, but dont be fooled - these tacos are filling. I love that they throw in lime wedges as well! This one is great with some hot or mild sauce (or both). Maybe I am weak, but the hot sauce sets my mouth ablaze so I do not think you will be disappointed. Whether you take it to stay or go, you will be presented with a generous amount of hot sauce. 2. Beef fajita taco - this was dry and bland. I left disappointed and was very tempted to never return...until I craved the number 2 again. I did not finish this. 3. Brisket taco - same complaint as previous, but was ordered on the same day, so maybe the kitchen was having a rough one? 4. Chips and queso - mediocre, but I know most love it so your mileage may vary. I did not care for the queso. My last complaint is this. I came in to Rusty Taco today and they shorted me $5 in change which I did not notice until I left (was in a hurry). Docking a star for this because I could have ordered another taco and a half with that, dammit! Honestly, I am not sure I can give more than three stars regardless. My wife and I ate there for the first time yesterday, Oct 25 2022 and it was one of the worst experiences we've ever had. The tacos were Cold, tasteless and small for the price you pay. We ordered a #8 and a #9. Very terrible!! We ordered a basket of chips and salsa. The chips were wet with grease and soggy. We could bend the chips back and forth and they wouldn't break. Salsa was tasteless. Should have known it was going to be bad when we walked in the entry way, it's where they store the empty beer kegs. Not impressive. I will never go back to this place or recommend it to anybody. read more
