People on a local Facebook group raved about this place so it was on our list to try. Arrived on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch. It's definitely a throwback to several decades and has the feel of a honky tonk. You enter right into the bar area and to our left was a handwritten sign on a chalk board on the floor that said please wait to be seated. So my friend and I stood there for a little while then grabbed a menu to peruse. It seemed like 5 minutes or so before a lady walked up to us and said "there are two booths over there" and we could have our pick. We took the menus with us and started reviewing the menus. It was quite busy for a late afternoon between lunch and dinner and we couldn't quite tell how many or if many people were working here as we sat for a while before a server came to us to offer drinks. We opted just for waters. Our waters were delivered and it seem like another 5 or 10 minutes before a different server came over to see if we are ready to order. Neither servers seemed to friendly or "interested". We decided to share a two way combo of pulled pork and St. Louis ribs with french fries and a side salad ($21) and a steak tips with fries and coleslaw ($23). Food: meats were all very tender, cooked perfectly and very good flavor except one steak tip has a funny taste. Generous amount of pulled pork but friend expected more than 3 pieces of steak for $23. Ample fries which were hot and crispy but hand cut fries would have been a winner. Cornbread was ok, have had tastier. Cole slaw very vinegary. Service: slow (not sure if this is the case all the time) and not particularly friendly at the onset but our server warmed up to us in the end Atmosphere: honkey tonk is the best way I can describe it. Value: for the two way, a very reasonable price. My friend thought the steak portion was a bit in the skimpy side for the cost. We would return and perhaps try some of their sandwich offerings. Huge portions served hot, the smoked meats were melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the sides were just as tasty. This was a pretty horrible experience. My guess is this is a restaurant just for local people, they are not interested in serving outsiders. I was standing at the hostess stand, waiting to be seated, one of the servers literally said to me "what do you want?". I had no idea what she meant or where that was, so I asked for further clarification, and she just waved her hand in the general direction. I sat for quite some time before another server took my order. I ordered the 5 bone plate. The food took quite some time to come out, which I found kind of odd, because in a place like this if it's barbecue, it's already cooking. The food was OK, nothing outstanding no one ever checked on me, and when I stood up, somebody finally asked if I wanted my bill. Going on a high recommendation of a friend, we took the trip to Byfield for some bbq. My my, what damn fine bbq it was! At good restaurants you usually have to wait for a seat. Not terribly long, about 15 minutes for the day we went. Not much for space to hang out, but no matter. We pulled through. The chairs are unique, and even though you don't think of all the butts that have sit in it, they were wicked comfy. Our server was very pleasant. I think ma femme opted for a steak tips, I think she enjoyed them but I do not recall. What haunts my memory though, was the delicious brisket I ordered. Needed a little sauce, but this was a cut of meat that was treated with love. You can note it in the tenderness, taste from the smokey subtle flavor, and savor the juicy cuts on the pan. Did I mention this is served on a pan? Yeah, f*ck plates they serve it on a pan. I loved it! The cole slaw was fresh and crisp, but didn't hit it home for me. But collared greens, if it was a woman it would be my mistress. Absolutely best collard greens I'd ever had. Savory with a little tang from lemon (I believe). The Bark that Bites Back! The smoked rib flavor is there but buried under way too much black pepper in the rub. My lips are still a bit numb from the peppered flavor. Had the 2 meat combo of ribs and brisket. The brisket was flavorful but the fat content was way too much. I would pay more for a more leaner cut of brisket. Brendan and Becca: We recently moved to Boston from Philadelphia where we lived in a primetime neighborhood... that was right next to one of the best BBQ places you can imagine. Since moving to Boston, there has been this subtle uneasiness of: "but where are we going to get good BBQ when we're craving it?". This existential crisis was put to rest on the way back from a pleasant afternoon spent in Portsmouth, NH. On our drive home, we were pleasantly full, having just sampled a lot of the culinary treats that Portsmouth has to offer. Despite our utter lack of hunger, we couldn't help but be curious about the simple, understated roadside sign "The Rusty Can BBQ". We initially drove past exit, but the gnawing curiosity about the restaurant was enough to have us make a U-turn and chase down this local hotspot. Mind you... we had just eaten. We were not hungry, but our BBQ senses were tingling and boy were we right. Upon pulling into the simple strip mall you realize that this place is either going to be a hidden gem or a complete waste of time bust. The answer to the question comes immediately upon walking in the door. The woman who greets you with an over the top, genuine, and not forced personality immediately gives you confidence that you are in the right place for BBQ. We had a sampler platter with Brisket (our favorite), as well as ribs with sides of coleslaw and mac and cheese. Every single part of the meal was absolutely fantastic. The meat was juicy and delicious. The BBQ sauce complimented the meat perfectly. The coleslaw nicely walked the tight rope of vinegary enough with just enough mayonnaise to keep it creamy without being overpowering. The mac and cheese was smooth and unxious in all the right ways. The service was chock full of all the hospitality that one could ever want. Overall a 5/5 - must visit. Our only hesitation about reviewing this place is that if enough people in Boston proper realize what kind of gem hides only 25 minutes North of the city, it might bite us in the behind when we are waiting behind them inline. My wife isn't a huge fan of BBQ so we hadn't eaten here until recently. We had the 3 1/2 lb tomahawk ribeye and we were blown away by our meal. Great Food---Excellent Service. I ordered the #2 from their catering menu on Saturday for a family event with 10 adults. This restaurant is fantastic, one of our favorites in the area. I have so much good stuff to say, I don't even know where to start. First, the food is outstanding. I've been there several times and have never been disappointed. The specials menu is my favorite, especially when something really interesting, new, and delicious makes an appearance, like the lamb stew. Another specials board favorite is the fried pork chop sandwich, which I can't help but order every time it's available. Their standard menu is awesome too, from the smoked meats to the burgers and chicken sandwiches. For dessert, the bread pudding is a must. We've always had great service there as well. We often have to wait, but it's usually shorter than they say, typically about 10-15 min. The staff is friendly and make great recommendations. I saw in some of the other reviews that they found the staff to be rude, which surprised me. All I can think of is that other patrons might have been greeted with some traditional New England hospitality, which might rub someone the wrong way if they're not from the area. Worth a drive! There is nothing resembling good BBQ anywhere in New Hampshire and boy am I glad this place is only 15 minutes from the border right off the highway. Brisket and pulled pork were cooked and seasoned to perfection. Didn't even need any BBQ sauce. Sides were equally on point and the cornbread served with honey butter was delicious. I swear I'm not a hater hater or an onion hater. This place just did not match my expectations going in. I have heard nothing short of amazing reviews so I really expected to be blown away. Overall, the food wasn't horrible or even bad, just...off. The ribs were tasty and tender, but the bones were not in one piece that you could just confidently eat around. There were tiny pieces of bone floating around so you really had to chew carefully and then fish any that made their was through out of your mouth so you don't accidentally swallow them. I am personally not someone who is comfortable with eating around and picking tiny bones out of my mouth, so this unfortunately really ruined any enjoyment the flavor otherwise gave. The mac and cheese was fine, but there were (1) TONS of pepper in it, and (2) chopped onions in the dish. I just...have never had either in nor as heavy handed in mac and cheese. Similar to the ribs, I had to pick around the onions (tiny chopped so this was no easy feat) to eat the Mac and dish. I am usually a fan of onions, but I literally have never in my life had them in mac and cheese, so I was not expecting that, and the texture was totally off because of it. Again, this affected my ability to enjoy the dish. The BBQ beans were overwhelmingly cumin flavored. I was really not expecting that when BBQ beans are usually sweet and tangy. I couldn't even eat two bites. I believe cumin to be a divisive seasoning, and if I had had any inkling that I'd be getting a mouthful, I flat out would not have ordered the dish. Basically, nothing was egregiously bad, per se, just not what you come to expect from traditional BBQ food. I get it when you're a fancy avant- garde place in the city and it's fusion cuisine, but this is not that. Just make regular BBQ food, which is what people are literally going there for. read more

Honestly, pretty meh. Based on the reviews, we were excited to try it out, but I don't get the hype. We had a Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich and a brisket plate with a soda and water and our check with tip was $60. We've had Nashville Hot Chicken in Nashville and this was not that. It was a chicken thigh, not a breast, and the sauce was basically buffalo hot sauce and not the spicy oily concoction that makes real Nashville Hot Chicken. The homemade potato chips were solid if a little undersalted. The brisket we got was really fatty, the fries were straight from the freezer into the fryer, and the macaroni and cheese had onion in it. The cornbread with maple butter was the best part. Try other places out first. The previous reviewer's "Let's Go Brandon" comment tells you what kind of clientele you're likely to find here if that matters to you. read more
