I have been told about this place since I moved up here. I finally made the little drive and I was so damn mad that I hadn't come here sooner. I walked in and got a To-go order of a 1/2 lb brisket, mac n cheese, and corn bread with a bottle of Diet Coke. The people inside were super nice and I waited less than 10 minutes. The Mac n cheese is good, not wow amazing great but good. It's a solid side, but I'm more of a cheddar/gouda gal and this was a bit tangier than I like. Their cornbread is so soft and fluffy with a crispy edge and I was very happy with it. I absolutely demolished the 2 pieces I got. That brisket was sooooo soft and smoky. Damn, it's good. For being up north, that is southern brisket with a nice smoke ring and everything and well-rendered fat as well. I will definitely be back to try other things but that brisket has been on replay for me for over a week. It will come as no surprise - I ate that entire 1/2 pounds of brisket...zero regrets.
Great Southern BBQ up North! Very affordable. Go hungry (seriously). We always get the 3 meats combo (brisket, pulled pork, ribs) and to be honest, we're probably not going to deviate because it works for us. They also have a giant pitcher of BBQ sauce (I think it's housemade) that pairs well with the meats. Oh and the mac&cheese is a personal fav of my hubby's and I like their greens.
Well, first visit after reading different reviews. Traveled some distance to try. Ordered a fiddlehead double IPA with 8.2 abv Smoked bbq chicken wings 2 meat combo of ribs, brisket, Mac and cheese, bbq beans Well, smoked wings were outstanding and some best I've had .... Just right amount of smoke flavor. Brisket was a huge wow... tender, moist and some of best brisket I've had at many bbq spots throughout USA. Ribs had a nice smoke ring, a bit salty for my tastes, but still an excellent cook on the ribs Mac and cheese was great, I wanted a multi cheese taste... add a parm cheese to it... still excellent cook on the Mac and cheese Beans very good, I like a bit more molasses, with few chunks briskets ... excellent however Corn bread on dry side...needs improvement Only one option for bbq ... I wanted a peach flavor for my brisket, but all good Excellent bbq with outstanding wings . I'll return .
This place is worth the drive as it has the best barbecue in the area. We've only gone during the week and it is always busy but so worth the wait. It is a no frills place but you come for the food. Servers are always friendly and welcoming so you can say that you also come for the great service. Bathrooms are clean and there's plenty of noise from people chatting and enjoying their meal. I usually get the ribs and they are fall of the bones delicious. Their barbecue sauce is also great. For sides I usually get macaroni and cheese and fries. I asked a server about the white bread served with my meal and she told me that some people like to make sandwiches with them. I haven't made one yet but hey it's a thing for some I imagine. Their corn bread is consistently perfect for me - sweet and moist.
Definitely a nice spot about 30 min from the beach we were at for the day. Pulled up and parked next to other cars that made a row in the parking lot "plaza." Walking into the restaurant you initially enter in from the bar/lounge side and greeted by a hostess that'll bring you into the next room which is the dining area. Our server was great! She explained the different meat options and how to order. We opted for the fried chicken wings to start with Cajun dry rub. I thought these were good, juicy, and well seasoned with rub! Nice and crispy. Wings were a good size not dinky wing dings that other places would call wings. We did the platter of beef brisket so good! Rack of ribs (fall off the bone) Mac and cheese was thick and creamy! They have condiments, napkins, hot sauce etc all in the table for you! Thought it was overall a great BBQ spot
TLDR - This place was well worth the wait (I've been eyeing it for some time) and the trip on a snowy day (1.5 hour round-trip). There are only a few restaurants I would whole-heartedly endorse as it does seem quality is falling as prices increase. It's great to find an excellent BBQ place in Mass.! BBQ, particularly good BBQ is so hard to come by in New England and now that I found a place within an hour of home-I'm ecstatic!!! The only other place that has been up to my standards in New England is in Littlelton, NH...there was one in Portland, ME but I believe they closed. Anyway, myself and my girlfriend split the 3-Meat combo and the Brisket Bomb-and took some desserts to go. Here's the deets: This place is like stepping into a Southern Restaurant with a decent Mass. vibe. We loved the realness of the servers-no fake nice-ness, just real people serving real food...It was perfect for us Massholes and we were thankfully there before the dinner crowd, so we couldn't be happier. We sat at the bar and had great service even thought the bartender was very busy. The Brisket Bomb (5/5) is quite similar to a Steak Bomb, but with Brisket. Arguably the best value on the menu. Could split with a friend and maybe get a side or two if your not looking to go big. Pulled Pork (5/5) was a little sweet and a little bit of spicy-and oh so damn good. Most pulled pork is at the very least, passable. This wasn't that. This was amazingly tasty. Ribs (5/5) we got 5 with our plate and they were fall off the bone and super tender & tasty. No sauce needed, although I tried one with some of their sauce-I know not everyone is into saucy BBQ but I've been to Kansas City and ate my way through that town-good saucy BBQ is excellent...as is dry rub...I love it all. I digress, these were great both ways but no sauce is really needed on any of their meat imo. That's a massive compliment! Chopped Brisket (6/5) you can also get it sliced if you prefer...it was so good...I thought my girlfriend was going to cut me for that last few bites. No joke, this shit was competition worthy! For sides we got the Mac n Cheese and the BBQ Black Beans. Both were very good. The mac was very creamy and while not the very best I've had it was really up there...we debated this and put it between a 4.25-4.5/5...the best usually with a little bit of breadcrumb imo but that might a personal taste but this was very good. It also has large shells which I love. Big marks for not putting pimento in it...that's def a Southern thing but we prefer without. The BBQ Black Beans 5/5 were soooo good. If you want to be really wild, mix in a little pulled pork or brisket and you can take it to the next level...but def not needed. Now, here is the kicker...they have HONEY BUTTER here. Talking about indulgent...we've only had it a few times and this was better than the best we have had. 7/5!!! Worth a trip for that alone. We practically licked the tray clean :P and got a brownie and a slice of pecan pie to go. We just shared them a few hours later, the taste still on my tongue as I write the review and both were great to me, although my girlfriend felt the brownie need to be a little more in the center...I guess they use a large pan because they were close to being burnt on the outter edges-but they were both great, if cooked a little uneven perhaps. Pecan pie was excellent too. 4.5/5 just to give them a little feedback. Overall this is NOT ONLY my FAVORITE BBQ in the STATE, it's my favorite in NEW ENGLAND!!! It would be an awesome place to take friends...to go watch a game (I bet it gets packed) or to pick up some Q to take home or to a party. We are massive fans!!!
Just made my first visit to the Rusty Can. I exited the highway and followed the signs as I zoomed right past the entrance to the Can....Opps. The building has a sign which is hard to see but I found it. Hint: From 95 north, the Rusty Can is about 75-100 yards from the exit ramp in a small plaza on the left. Anyway got there at 3:01 on a Monday. On Mondays they open at 3 pm. Since it was open for all of one minute, seating wasn't an issue as I parked myself at the bar in front of a tv. Plenty of beer choices plus peanuts at the ready while you wait. II needed a wing fix but couldn't decide so I opted for both the smoked buffalo wings and the dry rub cajun wings. Both came out in about 10 minutes. I liked the cajun but the sauced buffalo was better! I ended up getting a side of sauce and pouring that on the cajun. Next time I will have to try the brisket bomb as I saw someone get it and it looked incredible. Also the online menu is very basic but if you look at their Facebook page, they display all the specials which I think out number the regular menu... I give it four stars for the wings as they were good, pretty solid.
The Rusty Can has great BBQ! I first found out about this place when I was looking for food options last week when at Crane Beach but didn't end up going due to dinner plans. We did decide to go this week after our beach trip & it was sooo worth it! It's located in Byfield, which is a very small town/village that's apart of Newbury, MA, near Governor's Academy boarding school. When we arrived, it was pretty busy but luckily we did not have trouble getting a table for 3! Prices were very fair & we decided to go with the 2 meat combo: rack of pork ribs & brisket + comes with corn bread & butter, pickles, Mac and cheese, and some white bread. We also got some root beer & orange soda, which came in glass bottles. Everything was delicious! Brisket was tender, not dry at all, & tasty. This, dipped with some of their BBQ sauce, AMAZING. The corn bread was a little dry, though it was perfect with the butter! Now, the ribs were fall off the bone tender! For an app, we did order the Cajun chicken wings w/ ranch dip & I love me a good dry rub wings! These were very yummy. It's honestly so hard to find any BBQ spots in Boston, & I know they do exist in MA... they are just farther out. Rusty Can is about an 1hr-1hr15min drive north of Boston. Highly recommend if you're looking for a pretty good BBQ spot in MA. It's def closer to NH area. Service was quick and staff was very helpful! They suggested 2 meat combo for 3 and at first we didn't know if it'd be enough... we ended up having two ribs leftover and some of the sides!
I couldn't count how many times we've driven past the sign for the Rusty Can on I-95 in Byfield, Mass. Wish we would have stopped sooner! This is fantastic barbecue! The restaurant isn't fancy, but it's perfect as a BBQ joint. Expect to wait if you come at dinner or lunchtime. The staff helped us choose what was an amazing meal! We shared a rack of 10 ribs (I think they gave us 11), plus the sides you'd wish for. I was really impressed by the BBQ black beans. They really know how to smoke meat, the ribs were amazingly tender and flavorful! The sauce on the table was smoky and a little sweet, too. I'm looking forward to another visit!

One of those random lunch destinations you find in a pinch on the road, Rusty Can was worth a try given positive reviews and let me say this...WORTH IT! Has a bit of a dive feeling which played well for me with the bbq. Had sirloin tips...delicious. Perfectly marinated and cooked. Mustard based cole slaw is my favorite and was delicious. Tried a sampler of the ribs and was very pleasantly suprised...Fall-off-the-bone tender with great smoke favor. Look forward to coming back and trying more of their great menu. read more

Oh my gosh. We can't say enough good things about this place. We came in today after a day at the beach and were blown away. We got the pulled pork sandwich, Buffalo wings and 2 meat combo with sliced brisket, pork ribs, Mac and cheese and beans. The portions were insanely generous for the price and they didn't skimp on value. The pulled pork sandwich was huge, the wings were the best we've had in a looonnnggg time and the ribs have me questioning all other ribs I've had before they were so good. There's nothing worse than dry bbq and everything was so moist and tender. Definitely make a stop or even a detour to check this place out. read more

People on a local Facebook group raved about this place so it was on our list to try. Arrived on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch. It's definitely a throwback to several decades and has the feel of a honky tonk. You enter right into the bar area and to our left was a handwritten sign on a chalk board on the floor that said please wait to be seated. So my friend and I stood there for a little while then grabbed a menu to peruse. It seemed like 5 minutes or so before a lady walked up to us and said "there are two booths over there" and we could have our pick. We took the menus with us and started reviewing the menus. It was quite busy for a late afternoon between lunch and dinner and we couldn't quite tell how many or if many people were working here as we sat for a while before a server came to us to offer drinks. We opted just for waters. Our waters were delivered and it seem like another 5 or 10 minutes before a different server came over to see if we are ready to order. Neither servers seemed to friendly or "interested". We decided to share a two way combo of pulled pork and St. Louis ribs with french fries and a side salad ($21) and a steak tips with fries and coleslaw ($23). Food: meats were all very tender, cooked perfectly and very good flavor except one steak tip has a funny taste. Generous amount of pulled pork but friend expected more than 3 pieces of steak for $23. Ample fries which were hot and crispy but hand cut fries would have been a winner. Cornbread was ok, have had tastier. Cole slaw very vinegary. Service: slow (not sure if this is the case all the time) and not particularly friendly at the onset but our server warmed up to us in the end Atmosphere: honkey tonk is the best way I can describe it. Value: for the two way, a very reasonable price. My friend thought the steak portion was a bit in the skimpy side for the cost. We would return and perhaps try some of their sandwich offerings. Going on a high recommendation of a friend, we took the trip to Byfield for some bbq. My my, what damn fine bbq it was! At good restaurants you usually have to wait for a seat. Not terribly long, about 15 minutes for the day we went. Not much for space to hang out, but no matter. We pulled through. The chairs are unique, and even though you don't think of all the butts that have sit in it, they were wicked comfy. Our server was very pleasant. I think ma femme opted for a steak tips, I think she enjoyed them but I do not recall. What haunts my memory though, was the delicious brisket I ordered. Needed a little sauce, but this was a cut of meat that was treated with love. You can note it in the tenderness, taste from the smokey subtle flavor, and savor the juicy cuts on the pan. Did I mention this is served on a pan? Yeah, f*ck plates they serve it on a pan. I loved it! The cole slaw was fresh and crisp, but didn't hit it home for me. But collared greens, if it was a woman it would be my mistress. Absolutely best collard greens I'd ever had. Savory with a little tang from lemon (I believe). The slices of white bread and a piece of corn bread rounded out this wonderful experience. read more

My dad and I come here often and this time they had the chili cheese dog special which was amazing. The staff and servers are always super friendly and accommodating. My dad also got the brisket from here once and I can't forget about how good it was. Super chill atmosphere and a wide variety of food. read more

Great little place! Our party of six was seated and served promptly, and the food was incredible! Huge portions served hot, the smoked meats were melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and the sides were just as tasty. Glad we got there when the doors opened, as the place filled with customers within minutes! read more

This was a pretty horrible experience. My guess is this is a restaurant just for local people, they are not interested in serving outsiders. I was standing at the hostess stand, waiting to be seated, one of the servers literally said to me "what do you want?". I indicated that I would like to be seated so that I could order food, she walked away and another server came up and said well, you can sit at the video wall. I had no idea what she meant or where that was, so I asked for further clarification, and she just waved her hand in the general direction. I sat for quite some time before another server took my order. I ordered the 5 bone plate. The food took quite some time to come out, which I found kind of odd, because in a place like this if it's barbecue, it's already cooking. The food was OK, nothing outstanding no one ever checked on me, and when I stood up, somebody finally asked if I wanted my bill. I obviously have not ate very much, and they didn't even ask me if I wanted a box. Don't waste your time if you're not local. read more

One of the best BBQ places in town and in my opinion better than some Ive eaten in Texas. The steak bomb sandwich was amazing, the chicken was awesome and ribs and sauces were all fantastic! Will be stopping by again. read more

The Rusty Can never disappoints! The BBQ is solid and they have multiple specials a day including delicious sandwiches...the fried chicken with spicy mayo, Hoffman's cheese and pickles and the smoked prime super beef 3 way are highlights! Great bar and great service read more

The Bark that Bites Back! The smoked rib flavor is there but buried under way too much black pepper in the rub. My lips are still a bit numb from the peppered flavor. Had the 2 meat combo of ribs and brisket. The brisket was flavorful but the fat content was way too much. I would pay more for a more leaner cut of brisket. I could only eat a small amount way too greasy! The accompanying cornbread was very good! The vinegar based cole slaw was decent. The thin little crispy string French fries were awesome. Two slices of white bread and a side of kosher dill pickles and raw sliced onions were all served on big baking sheet. The seats were sticky and everything you touched had a sticky residue. I felt dirty, very dirty! It may be great joint for the area but I have cooked and eaten a lot of smoked and BBQ food. It is not necessary to be that spicy to be tasty. Would I recommend , no not really. Kudos to the outspoken hostess- she was entertaining! read more

Brendan and Becca: We recently moved to Boston from Philadelphia where we lived in a primetime neighborhood... that was right next to one of the best BBQ places you can imagine. Since moving to Boston, there has been this subtle uneasiness of: "but where are we going to get good BBQ when we're craving it?". This existential crisis was put to rest on the way back from a pleasant afternoon spent in Portsmouth, NH. On our drive home, we were pleasantly full, having just sampled a lot of the culinary treats that Portsmouth has to offer. Despite our utter lack of hunger, we couldn't help but be curious about the simple, understated roadside sign "The Rusty Can BBQ". We initially drove past exit, but the gnawing curiosity about the restaurant was enough to have us make a U-turn and chase down this local hotspot. Mind you... we had just eaten. We were not hungry, but our BBQ senses were tingling and boy were we right. Upon pulling into the simple strip mall you realize that this place is either going to be a hidden gem or a complete waste of time bust. The answer to the question comes immediately upon walking in the door. The woman who greets you with an over the top, genuine, and not forced personality immediately gives you confidence that you are in the right place for BBQ. We had a sampler platter with Brisket (our favorite), as well as ribs with sides of coleslaw and mac and cheese. Every single part of the meal was absolutely fantastic. The meat was juicy and delicious. The BBQ sauce complimented the meat perfectly. The coleslaw nicely walked the tight rope of vinegary enough with just enough mayonnaise to keep it creamy without being overpowering. The mac and cheese was smooth and unxious in all the right ways. The service was chock full of all the hospitality that one could ever want. Overall a 5/5 - must visit. Our only hesitation about reviewing this place is that if enough people in Boston proper realize what kind of gem hides only 25 minutes North of the city, it might bite us in the behind when we are waiting behind them inline. This place deserves all of the accolades that can be bestowed on a BBQ spot. Absolute perfection, food and ambiance alike! read more

My wife isn't a huge fan of BBQ so we hadn't eaten here until recently. We had the 3 1/2 lb tomahawk ribeye and we were blown away by our meal. Great Whiskey selection which I will take advantage of when we return. The beans and mashed sweet potato side were delicious as well. We sat at the bar and the entire staff engaged us in conversation. I can't say enough good things about the Rusty Can. read more

BBQ absolutely delicious. Stopped on a whim was driving up 95 wanted a bite and let Yelp guide us to the nearest spot. Amazing, we tried a variety of options brisket, pulled pork, salad, baked beans, hush puppies, chili tater tots, corn bread w honey butter, so yummy. Even had a non meat eater among us and she filled up. Will definitely be back; sorry didn't think to take photos until it was gone. read more

What exactly would a camp ground be delivering?
Do they take reservations?
I don't think so. It's never been so crowded when I tried to go there that I couldn't get right in. (outside seating too) If you have a large party maybe that's something to call them about. I'd say generally they don't take reservations.
I have seen pictures of the smoked prime rib, but don't see it on the menu. Is it a special only available at certain times?
Yes. It's sometimes on the special board. It's delicious!!
