With a 96% white population and my hair dark as the midnight sky, I'm like a pepper in a sea of salt in Hayden. This city and the lake it borders were named after a homesteader whose last name was used because he won a card game. True story! WHY GO THERE? Hayden is a scenic small town next to a booming Couer d'Alene. The Rustler's Roost is one of the good ol' country style breakfast digs that serve Idaho home fried potatoes with every plate. They also have lunch, sandwiches and dinner menu. WHATCHA GOT? Grits! Kidding, I go to Kentucky for that. I had Rustler's Special: 3 eggs, chicken fried steak and guess what? Potatoes. It typically comes with biscuits and gravy but can be substituted for pancakes. Bud had sausage. Truth be told, the chicken fried steak is better than the the dried out meat you get at Icon Grill in downtown Seattle. YOU GOT SERVED. The host is pleasant, chatty and friendly. He made sure all those who walk in the door are met with a smile. He offers coffee or Market Spice tea while diners wait for a table. The food is just ok. Not bad, not a flavor explosion. The reason for a higher rating is because of the atmosphere and the staff. Interior is nice and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. My husband and I adore this place. This is our go-to breakfast diner. On most days you will be met by Woody, the owner, and seated promptly. If you happen to experience a wait, then he always asks if you want coffee while you wait. They also serve fresh brewed Market Spice tea. It's served just like the coffee and is refillable. It's truly amazing! And when you are ready to leave, they ask if you want a cup to go! They have little baskets of toys that they loan out to the tables with kids. Nice touch guys! My two-year-old appreciates it. I order an omelet or the French toast platter. My husband likes the steak and eggs. We have always enjoyed our meals and the service is amazing! I give it 1 star because it was clean and nicely decorated!! However the food was the worst I have ever had in 30 years of being alive!!!! Bland pre-made flavorless breakfast hamburger patty the chicken fried steak was flavorless and small. Now the biscuits were as heavy as a rock and the gravy was flower and water I think it might have had a splash of pepper. The French toast was the best part of it and it's defiantly nothing to praise. I am understanding of off days or maybe not my style. RR reminds me of a small town truck stop restaurant, the food is good if you look past the dust, dirt and so-so service. Plastic plates and glasses, cobwebs hanging from the light fixtures, dirt piled in the corners, sloppy server stations need to be overlooked if you choose to eat. Breakfast portions are hearty. Typical breakfast offerings are well cooked and tasty. There are plenty of good breakfast restaurants in CDA, Rustlers has plenty of competition and needs to literally 'clean up' to compete. read more

Dashed in last Thursday 130 pm Aug 30th with three lively toddlers to treat my tired daughter to creamy gravy and biscuits and home fries and eggs. She herself is an excellent cook and together we've had great biscuits and gravy at other breakfast spots including Jimmy's. The waitress at Rustler's --whose name I didn't catch --was excellent -in a blink of the eye she had toys, menus and water on the table as we apologized that we were late but were heading to the airport soon . She was superbly efficient and welcoming - and the food came quickly and was delicious! Unique homefries almost like thick potato chips - and substantial biscuits and gravy not loaded with sausage but satisfying flavor (we are basically vegetarians but make exceptions for country-hearty gravy !). For my last meal in Idaho before returning to Riverside California that patient and friendly waitress, her skills at quick kind service and the simple tasty and filling food provided a wonderful memory . Sure, they serve huge potions at a decent price, but it's heavily processed food that lacks flavor. The few things that this place has going for it is the friendly staff and plenty of seating. Nice interior and very clean inside and out. Our waitress didn't have any personality and was very cold. Our food came quickly and was hot. Pancakes were good. Bacon was crisp and good but the biscuit was hard as a rock. I hollowed it out and ate the center, it wasn't too bad. Gravy was Sysco gravy and nothing special. Once we got our check we went to the front and Woody cashed us out. Great and friendly owner, his waitstaff needs to learn from him. Might be back. read more

I was not sure at first after leaving ihop because of their lack of customer service. We were seated promptly, Dolly our server was nice but not over bearing. She basically waited all the tables from what I saw. Food was on time, fresh and tasty. We really enjoyed our breakfast here. We have been coming here rather frequently for the past year or so for breakfast on Saturday mornings. One of our favorite things is seeing Woody up front smiling and greeting everyone that comes in. He truly sets up your meal for success. Service staff has always been great. Food feels like home and the inside feels like a diner. Some twenty years ago we had visited another location of the Roost and always remembered the great home cookin' and decided to return. In their new location along the 95 one can still find the heaping portions of food that you might make at home - simple and basic. Parking is ample and location is prime if you are traveling through. I've been coming to Rustler's Roost ever since I was a kid, I remember eating there when it was in downtown Cd'A at the tiny little place hardly larger than a shack. It's now moved 3 times since then (about 25 years or so) but the food has consistently remained the same great quality. Some of the best country fried steak I've had anywhere and the gravy is amazing. It's not your typical sausage gravy, I'm not exactly sure how you'd describe as I've never tasted a gravy like it anywhere else. All I know is, it's fricking amazing, I could eat just a bowl of the gravy with a spoon. I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with the people who thinks its bland. I mean, I can understand not liking it, but not being able to taste it seems more an issue with taste buds rather than the gravy. The meal I get most often there is the Rustler's Special, which is the country fried steak, home fries, eggs, and a biscuit and gravy. I always ask for extra gravy because I dip everything in it, excluding the eggs. Maybe not the best thing for me, but it's so good, I can't help it. The service is always fast and friendly and the decor has a "rustic" charm, an old West kind of theme, if you like that kind of thing. Personally not a fan, but hey, it's tradition. All in all, I would highly recommend Rustler's to anyone. read more

Yeaa..so I really don't know how this restaurant got any good reviews. I'm one for trying new places and having an open mind but this was quite possibly the worst breakfast I've had in my life..and I or my husband are not picky. It was a total waste of money considering breakfast I made at home is about 1,000 times better. The coffee was watery, somehow the eggs tasted fishy. However the service was good and they did cook me new eggs. Those are the only good parts. The gravy with the biscuits and gravy tasted like clam chowder and was completely smooth, no sausage or flavor or anything in it!! Even the french toast was completely bland and tasted like just plain old bread..no flavor. Basically you can just sum up everything with the two words...NO FLAVOR. Definitely not worth the time or money, my family and I were completely disappointed. Will never go here again or suggest it to anyone else. Sorry Rustlers Roost...you need MAJOR improvement. We've literally had better tasting food at McDonalds, which is not a good sign. read more

3 stars is mainly for the service... I had the fish sandwich and it was nothing more than ok, the fries were better than the sandwich. The service was on point and the woman who served me was not just an order taker... Whenever I go to a new breakfast restaurant I always order one of two things: chicken fried steak or eggs benedict. The first and only time I went here I ordered the chicken fried steak. I heard this place had great gravy so I got excited because nothing is better than chicken fried steak with great gravy. When my food shows up its not chicken fried steak, it was a chicken patty from the Super 1 across the street. It's called chicken fried STEAK for a reason. Wont go back. read more
