You be the judge. Russo's did work on front right wheel (~$600). Not touched again until I tried to remove it but couldn't b/c the nuts were over-torqued. Left work early to bring it in & he appeared to re-torque. Took it home & 3 came off easily & 1 nut was still over-torqued. Left work early again & Russo's told me to come back 3 hrs later to loosen 1 nut. Their mistake yet my wasted time & comments were made suggesting I waited too long & now my problem. Raise your hand if you check the lug nut torque soon after each repair? Ha! p.s. 19 yr-old car & never has a shop make this mistake. read more

Took my car in because my check engine light was on. They told me 2 O2sensors need replaced paid 450 dollars. 2 days later light came back on. Took it back said one of the sensors was bad replaced it with a Honda certified sensor. One week later light came back on. Took it back said everything checked out on diagnostic. Said might be a software update that only Honda can do. 2 days later light is back on I'm out 450 dollars and I'm back where I started. Feel so suckered read more

They "fixed" the lights by replacing the bulbs for $91 & gave me an estimate of $500 for a tune up. Asked my brother what he thought & he said bring it over. I recently moved into the area and coming form the far NW burbs one of the things you gave up in moving to Oak Park is a big heated garage to work on your car. I was overdue on an oil change and I've always performed all of maintenance on my cars personally. So hading over my car to just any mechanic, even for something as rudimentary as an oil change was not a routine adventure. I used Yelp to locate shops in my area and Russo's was my third choice based on reviews and comments. The first place I called seemed solid on paper but when I called to schedule they were very short on the phone and basically had the approach of just 'drop off the car' and didn't want to talk to me on the phone. The second shop was more of the same; couldn't provide an exact fee if I was supplying the parts, short on the phone, didn't want to hear my story. So I called up Russo's the conversation couldn't have been any easier. I could bring the car by first thing in the morning one day later that week and wait, and after telling them I would supply the materials it was only $15 for the service. Done. I arrived a cold winter morning at 7:30 and was back out the door by 8:00. They even put the leftover oil bottle in the cabin without my asking for it back (I gave them 6 quarts and it always takes 5.5 with a filter change). Here's a tip: don't schedule service on a Monday as then you couldn't walk over to the Oak Park Bakery for a fresh donut while you wait :) read more

We have been going Russos for many years, its a great neighborhood garage you can trust. We have had multiple cars, both foreign and domestic, and Russos has handled them all. You always get a fair assessment of what needs to be done, and they will only do work they think is necessary. There have been multiple times where they actually suggested to do less work to help us save money but keep the car running I feel the pricing for the service is very competitive, and I have always gotten my car back within the same day I have dropped it off We have 3 cars with mileage in the 130-150k range that have all been serviced by Russos. If you are a south side Oak Park or Forest Park resident you should definitely take your car to Russos for service! To top things off, they are Blackhawks fans!! read more

I have been to numerous mechanics in my life and Russo's is truly the gold standard for honesty, standing by their work, and excellent service. I discovered them when a local chain repair/muffler shop tried to scam me by disconnecting a few things and insisting they needed to be replaced on top of the issue I had gone to them about, to the tune of about $1600.00. I took it to Joe and his team after a number of glowing reviews from people I know, they looked it over, called me and said that there were a few items disconnected, he reconnected them, there would be no charge. He went on to say, I did need x and y repaired (which was why I sought assistance in the first place) but it was something that could wait if need be. Needless to say I have worked with them ever since. I recently had a major repair done (water pump, timing belt kit, et.al.), there were some residual issues, Something didn't feel quite right after a few days of driving it. I brought the car back and requested they test and make sure everything was working right. They spent a great deal of time and I suspect some money, to see to it that everything was operating properly, made some adjustments, and replaced a spring that wasn't quite right all without additional charge. They have always taken the time to explain things, answered my innumerable questions, accommodated my "how inexpensively can we get this done?' requests when possible, and even once lent me a socket set and a screwdriver after selling me a headlight lamp, so I could replace the bulb myself before a road-trip, when they were too busy to take my car without an appointment. Very friendly, affordable, and honest service. I took my 2007 Civic in for a check since my car seemed to be bouncing all over the highway at 55mph and up. I stopped in late in the evening without calling and they happily accommodated me and my car was ready right away the next day. Prices were fair, may have gotten a cheaper tire at a big box place since Joe says he doesn't get the best deals on tires himself, but either way I would rather pay an extra few dollars and support local business anyway. Over the last 36 years, I've had Russo's do small jobs on our 2 cars, mostly starting the cars when the battery died. I did that bc the founder said they don't work on Volvos. A few days ago, I was driving down one of Oak Park's quiet streets when I heard a bang, then clattering on the street, and then uproar from the exhaust system. I took the car into the Volvo dealer and repair. They diagnosed the problem and then said they didn't have the equipment to patch this roaring hole in the tailpipe. What?! So I called Russo's, who said they'd look at it and see whether they could repair the pipe and replace a clamp or something that was about to give up the ghost. Without pre-emptivr replacement, it would break and send the rest of the muffler system head first into the street. Russo's took a peek, knew they could do the job, and two hours later, the roaring was gone. For a pittance of what my trusty Volvo friends (this is serious, not snark. I like these Volvo repair managers) had estimated. So thanks, Joe, Dan, and whoever fixed our old car. Y'all done good and good on ya! I hope you have or had a happy Fourth! read more

I went in to Russo's for the second time because the first time was great...and apparently I was too lazy to write a review for it. This time is more substantial as it pertains to issues. I dropped my vehicle off at 7:45am. Joe and Dan said they'd get on it immediately. I was contacted by them about an hour later. If that seems long to anyone, okay. Their lot is PACKED with cars. I was more than satisfied with the turn around. Joe explained everything to me in terms I could understand. He was empathetic but to the point. He explained how long it was estimated to take versus his experience in actually repairing the issue. I don't like parting with the money because there's nothing fun about parting with money for things you can't see or enjoy. I bought peace of mind though. Good first-time customer experience with alternator replacement. Was facing a much higher repair cost at a repair shop at Harlem and Division. Even with a tow from that other shop, Russo's repair was less expensive. Also, their towing service is far less expensive than what the other place charges for a tow. Also, the other place wanted to replace the battery. Russo's did the same tests and did not see the need. I won't accuse the other shop of dishonesty; they may have just been erring on the side of caution - but for my part I like a shop that errs on the side of saving me expense. Will likely call on Russo's again for repairs. read more

**DON'T trust the 5 star reviews** And take your car here at your own risk! I took my car to Russo's for some maintenance, as I did several times before. They accidentally broke a part in the interior of my car but I didn't mind, because they admitted their fault and replaced it for free. But in the process of fixing that, they damaged (as in cracked, dented, and scratched) the plastic around it, which was in 100% new condition before, despite the age of my car. Again, this was fine with me IF they would have admitted that it was their fault. Instead, I had to hear from Russo that it was "my word vs his employee's", and that there's no proof of what that part looked like before I brought it in. I think I would know, though... it's MY car! I should have seen this coming, though, because even when the first part broke, an employee on the phone tried to deny responsibility for it. He then tried to make up for it by looking for a used part in better condition, to replace the damaged one. (After refusing to pay for a new one, since apparently my car is too old and is now not worth treating the same as a new car, despite the fact that it looks and runs much better than cars that have been driven for half as long.) The issue is not whether they are willing to replace it, but the way I was spoken to and how I was basically accused of blaming them for breaking something that was already like that from before (which it was ~not~). He said it must have been "normal wear and tear" from before, rather than admitting that it may have accidentally/unintentionally been done by an employee. I would have even been willing to pay to have it fixed there, if they just said that accidental damage during repairs was not covered under their policy- instead of trying to talk their way out of taking the blame. Don't go here unless you're willing to risk your car being damaged by the workers AND being told that it was not their fault (therefore implying that it was your fault). I am going back to having my car dealership maintained (and the dealer, by the way, is selling me the new part for $80 less than the price quoted to me at Russo's for the same thing). At least I know that I'll be treated with respect there, and that they don't take their customers for granted. UPDATE: The day after getting my car back from Russo's, I tried to use my A/C button. I didn't need it the day before because of the cold weather. My button is broken now. It was working before I left it there, for sure. So now I have to pay hundreds of dollars to get my entire A/C unit fixed, which was working fine before. And Russo was insisting that his employee didn't even "touch" that whole area of my car... read more

Overcharges always. Went in to have him check my brakes and when he said it would cost me $300+, I told him I would just go to Jiffy Lube bc it's cheaper there. Then told me he would charge $50 bc he had checked them. I've gotten my brakes checked by Jiffy Lube and CarX and never been asked to pay a service fee for a brake check. Not to mention an oil change is almost $50. Be more transparent about your charges so you don't surprise your customers. Also, the owner is quite arrogant and not pleasant to talk to. Won't be patronizing his company anymore. read more

I am new to the area and I needed to find a mechanic. I saw that Russos had good reviews and has been in business for 45 years, so I thought it was a safe bet. I was very impressed by the service, speed and honesty of Joe and his team. He quickly found out what the issue was...(a $23 part) ordered it for me and had it installed quickly and without overcharging me or trying to add more issues to pad the price. He was very communicative and pleasant with every interaction. Whomever wrote the bad reviews, I think they are confusing this mechanic with another one close by. Good review of this place! They have been recommended to us by several people. We've taken our car in for anything from an oil change, to a dead battery, to odd noises- You name it. Each time they've been professional, quick, and most importantly, honest. There were several times when we didn't understand the problem and/or weren't able to diagnose the problem with the vehicle ourselves. On one occasion, after we heard an odd noise, they tested our car thoroughly, and after nothing came up, they said so! And sent us on our way! Given the way many other car places operate, this was the point when they could have taken us for a ride, and I'm happy to say they didn't. Stopped by late on a busy afternoon WITHOUT an appointment to have a suspicious noise on my CRV checked out. The guy apologized that they didn't have any lifts available to take a good look, but offered to take a quick listen. Immediately he knew it was a loose heat shield. He grabbed gloves and pliers, got under my car in the middle of the driveway, and took care of it. He scoffed when I offered him $20 (my peace of mind was worth at least that, right?). I'm going back today for an oil change and will update this review as I have more encounters with these guys. read more

Called on the Friday before Memorial Day, described the windshield wiper problem (which a chain auto repair place had "fixed" incorrectly with new wiper blades the day before) and the guy on the phone immediatly diagnosed it as a loose bolt. He warned me if it was anything else he couldn't do it today because they were all booked up but he said I could come over and he'd check it out. He did - tightend the bolt in about a minute - no charge - and I was on my way. I will defnitely be coming back here (and not to the chain) for my next auto maintenance or repair needs. I towed my car to Russo's lot on Sunday (while they were closed) and left a message on their answering machine. The next morning (today) they were on top of it and in constant communication with me. Unfortunately, it is a trans issue and they cannot fix it, but they were incredibly helpful! They have excellent customer service and didn't even charge me to look at it.
