I have this buddy, and when we decide to go have dinner together, we often just hem and haw and aimlessly paw through our Yelp apps. You know, before deciding to go to one of the same two or three places. Well not tonight! Tonight we hit Rush Hour and it was tasty. Oh the pastabilities! My gnocci was a huge bowl of creamy goodness, and my buddy got the chicken parm, sub in a pasta side. It looked awesome. He doesn't really like cheese, so he left his mozza topping (fool), but if you are a cheese lover, this is definitely the dish for you. Lovely street-side patio, cute bright interior covered in wine bottles and really kind servers.

The service was fantastic. Our server (possibly the owner?) had the patio table set up for us as we were getting out of the car. We were sat under a huge umbrella, which shielded us nicely in the rain that came afterwards (is there anything more romantic than dining in the rain? IS THERE?) We began dinner with a complimentary glass of port. Very tasty. I was a bit disappointed by the booze menu. Only Steam Whistle and Flying Monkeys (errggh no thanks) on tap, and only French Cross by the glass. This is the wine I usually buy for cooking, not drinking. The food was delicious and the portions were huge. The calimari appetizer was fantastic and perfectly cooked. For my main I had the grilled whole seabream, which was the daily special. It was a touch overcooked, but otherwise very good. I had no hope in hell of finishing off my plate. The Hubster had a caesar salad and the chicken parmiagiana, which he really enjoyed. What really stuck out at this place was the service. You could tell that everyone there really cares about what they're doing. The only thing that bugged me a bit was that the patio is pretty loud, as it's right on Dufferin street. This spot is pretty close to our house. I'd likely bring the in-laws here if they were ever looking for a fancy spot to dine.

Name does NOT match the restaurant. "Rush Hour" sounds more fitting for a café, sandwich place, other takeout restaurant where you just pick up and go. So when I arrived, I was surprised to find: 1) FREE dedicated parking alongside the restaurant, 2) a patio &, 3) white table cloths with wine glasses on top. I was going to ask the server about the name, but I forgot. Plus, I didn't want to be rude since they were soo nice! They even made me a port tonic - off menu, made sure it was the way I liked it, AND even changed it by adding the ice cubes...very important. Complimentary bread (different kinds)/hummus - Excellent! Calamari - I wished it was a bit more grilled. I know it can get rubbery when cooked more, but I love the grilled taste and that just wasn't that prominent. The pastas were hidden in the "Hot off the pans" portion of the menu. I just read through it and there was no pastas with a rosé/tomato-based sauces. I'm sure they could've accommodated this request, but you'll hafta consult your tastebuds as to whether or not those combos will taste well together. My friend had the steak and it was cooked as per his request. Fries were amazing, golden brown. I hate when restaurants under/overcook fries or they're limp/greasy. We were too stuffed for dessert, but the server brought us complimentary Natas. Yum. Will be back for either an occasion or a treat meal!

Probably my favourite place in the city for a great full meal. From the occasional welcome glass of port or the fresh bread while you food is being prepared the Rush Hour is a clinic on how a restaurant should be run. In summer there is a patio off to the side that is great to spend the afternoon on with a book and beer. When I used to live on Lansdowne it was definitely a twice a month visit and now out in Oakville I am sad that my visits are less frequent. They are closed Monday and usually require a reservation Friday / Saturday but I guarantee it is well worth the visit.

Creme brulee. Perfect sweet ending to our meal.

I would pass Rush Hour all the time and always made a mental note to try it, so we made reservations for Valentines day (which I highly recommend even for non-holidays, as it's a small intimate restaurant with about 10 tables.) The service was impeccable, all of the wait staff were super friendly and really made us feel comfortable. The restaurant itself is cozy and upscale, without being pretentious. Along with the amazing service, the food was delicious!!!! We started with the grilled calamari, which was cooked perfectly with a nice char taste. Then we shared the Pichana steak, which came with house fries and side salad. The steak was cooked exactly the way we want, the fries were so good and the salad was well dressed. We also shared the grilled lamb chops - and they were out of this world!!!! Perfectly seasoned! The lamb was so tender. If you like lamb chops, I highly recommend this dish. Even if you dont, try them! It will change your mind on lamb. It came with a side of veggies and mushroom risotto, which was SO good as well. The BF and I made another mental note to order the risotto entree next time! We found the prices so reasonable for the fresh ingredients and portion sizes. Everything from the service to the ambiance, and the phenomenal meal, we will definitely be back soon!

Picanha and tuna!!!

I loved the place. The service was awesome and kind. Although they didn't have the Albarinho wine I wanted, they made a good suggestion of a vinho verde. The food was perfectly cooked and in big portions. I would suggest to make reservation because gets busy for dinner. Can't wait to go back for oysters and wine at the patio.

Fantastic fresh oysters and grilled shrimp. Awesome fresh bread as well.

Just a fantastic spot in the least likely of places. Staff was very professional. Little touches and attention to detail in the service. Fantastic bread and hummus on the house plus the best fish I've had in the city. Nothing over done. Just let the ingredients speak for themselves. Fried apple dessert was amazing (I'm not even a big fan of dessert).

I was very impressed with the restaurant. It's not the biggest place but quiet and romantic. The restaurant does take reservations, and it seemed like they were booked the entire night when we got there with reserved signs on the tables. Service was very attentive and made sure you were well taken care of. It is quite possible this was family-owned, although I'm not sure (which can make quite a difference). They gave us a basket of bread with hummus -- who doesn't love bread?! Ordered the grilled calamari -- Delicious!!! Tender and well-seasoned. Main -- Chicken Parm was HUGE. I could only eat half of it. It was so tender and juicy. Came with a side of veges. Also got the special Steak kabob ft. filet mignon, chorizo sausage and steak. That was also quite filling and delicious. Price was very reasonable, especially with the portion size. We were quite full and couldn't even finish it all, so make sure you're hungry! Drinks were around $5. Pretty cheap as we ordered a fuzzy navel and mill st. beer. Didn't order dessert but they had a good variety: apple beignet, cheesecake, sorbet, etc. Our bill came up to $80 for everything. Not bad at all! Would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone with taste.

The Seafood Penne in Alfredo Sauce seemed to be lacking the strong cheesy flavour that I loved before. The Picanha Steak came slightly over cooked instead of medium. The complimentary bread selection and chickpea hummus were good. The Chocolate Brownie Cheesecake and Pineapple Sorbet (served in half pineapple) were fantastic and refreshing, definitely the highlight of this meal.

Just hummus....but it was so delicious, I had to take a picture.

The potatoes were bland, as if they were boiled rather than roasted. Or perhaps this was just a lazy attempt at slapping an order together because it was via Uber Eats? As always, their peri peri sauce is among the best in the city and saved the meal. Either way, lots of better options in the city these days.

There were four of us and ordered the sangria to share between three of us which was a lot but refreshing. Apps were Lucas Freitas (fried calamari) and Chourico a Bombeiro (flaming sausage). Both were delicious. I forgot to mention the bread and Piri Piri Sauce which came in the form of a large bottle. These were complimentary and it's nice to see a restaurant continue this tradition. There used to be a very crusty artisan bread that was served but over the years that has disappeared and it's a white bread now. Three of us had chicken/chicken breast and one had veal. Even the small portion was very generous. The salad was underwhelming but a pretty presentation. The server got a couple of orders wrong and seemed very distracted. The piece de resistance was the "Portuguese Tarts" which made a wonderful finale to a good Al fresco dining experience.

Return visits while in Toronto (2 of 3)…read more I came back to Perla and its appeal, at least to me, is very much still there. You are greeted upon walking in to this family run Portuguese restaurant. This time, I tried a bitoque, a steak with an egg on top. It would be on the list of 10 typical entrees you'd find in a Portuguese restaurant. It was preceded by a salad, for which I selected the Caesar salad option. I followed it up with a dessert which was a goblet with a frothy type of gelatin, pudding, or mousse. The flavor was either passion fruit or guava. I forgot what it was immediately upon leaving because I devoured it so quickly! The frothiness made it lighter, such that it wouldn't weigh you down. By now, you should be able to tell this was a very good meal. A few things round out the experience. The bread was accompanied by a pate' or dip of sorts. It was excellent. I didn't know what it was, therefore I asked. It had tuna as well as a good number of other ingredients. Together, it did not taste very fishy or potent in any way, except incredibly flavorful. Their cuisine is representative of all of Portugal, although Perla's roots are in Northern Portugal. The painted ceramic rooster for good luck one often sees hails from Barcelos, just slightly north of the Porto area. In fact, the fueling and rest areas on the toll road through Barcelos have these modern metallic renditions of the rooster that are minimalistic silhouettes you look right through. I might add a few other things that made me glad I returned to Perla. For one, Lusophones are well represented among the customers. But, more importantly, they fill an important niche for me since so many Portuguese locales miss this mark. They are essentially a reliable mid-range restaurant with a broad enough menu. Here, you can avoid the end points that I don't much care for or seek - the piri piri (or peri peri) chicken places where you accompany your order with a pastel de nata that the "hey, wow man" types (at least on the Plateau in Montreal) tend to frequent and the high-end restaurants where Portuguese leans haute cuisine, a lot is about presentation, and the portions are small. (In Montreal, one such place should immediately come to mind.) I was happy that I stopped by, using the TTC card with which you can avoid the crazy Toronto traffic and parking hassles. The College Street streetcar practically stops in front of Perla's door. It all adds up. The team running this restaurant puts their hearts into their work. I am going to go with 5 stars, with each one representing a letter in the word P-E-R-L-A.

It was the perfect capstone...nice, upscale, delicious Portuguese food and seafood. Based on the availability on the website, I was concerned + discouraged that I would not be able to get a table, but I was able to walk in and get a table without any issue. I started my meal with the Tiger Shrimp appetizer (Gambas Mozambique). They were accented with a delicious piri piri sauce and the overall flavor was phenomenal. Clams were my first choice, but they were out of them. For my main, I tried a special white flaky fish that they had from the Azores that resembles a perch. It was delicious! For dessert, I had the vanilla meringue dessert. It was good but by this point I was so full. The slice was huge, but the meringue just melted in your mouth. I really liked the wine list....they had vinos from the different parts of Portugal. I sat in the front part of the restaurant and enjoyed looking out the windows to people watch. Service was great! Came here on a Thursday night and was surprised at how busy it was for a weekday. Despite that, the service was excellent! Staff were friendly off the bat and very attentive after each dish was finished, making sure to wipe off the table or exchanging the plates which I was really impressed with despite how busy they were. We decided to go with their tasting menu where you gave them a price range you wanted to stick to - I believe it was $85-$200, and you can mention some dishes you definitely want to try and they curate the rest for you which I thought was so unique! I loved the idea of that. The dishes we really wanted were the octopus, bone marrow and scallops. The only standout dishes to me were the scallops, and a salad I cannot remember the name of but was so shocked at how good just a simple salad could be. Other than that, the other dishes were still good, but nothing extraordinary to be honest. The octopus was a bit too charred which was disappointing as it was what I was looking forward to the most. The tasting menu we got also had mainly vegetable dishes (other than the ones I just mentioned), so was hoping to get a few more meat dishes. This is definitely a great spot for vegetarians as it had a lot of veggie dishes. I would still come back to maybe try some of their other more meat focused dishes. Overall, I still had a great time and can't stress enough how lovely our waitress and the rest of the staff were!

But when we one of us went to grab the water decanter to refill water three times even while our server watched us and kept walking - that was a no, no. The food was okay and perhaps suffered from staffing issues but when you're paying 100 per plate I would like a better dining experience. The best thing we had was dessert but we waited almost an hour for this. One almost fell asleep waiting. The atmosphere clearly suffered from the tables around us. We could hear how upset people were and they asked for their food to go. I could hear the table next door in Portuguese want the bill. They wanted their dessert and it just wasn't coming. We were in the same boat. Had at least the customer service been positive - our table would feel better. We asked for help with our table that kept shaking but that didn't happen. Not fun to eat while table is shaking. We watched while everyone had received bread so we asked. She clearly wasn't pleased we requested this. Her facial expression read upset while her eyes rolled up. I was a honestly regretting asking. Then when she brought it to our table, she firmly planted that plate on our table and walked away. That's not very kind at all. It was one of the most upsetting evenings.
