Carlos, the owner of this establishment, is impolite and extremely unprofessional. I reserved a Trail Ride with a Guide for $120 plus tax per rider (3 riders) totaling $396.00. Upon our arrival on the day of the ride, he inquired about my nephew's and niece's weights. My nephew stated he weighed 310 pounds and my niece said she weighed 235 pounds. The cutoff is 240 pounds, so he insisted on charging an additional person's fee. It should have been $120.00 plus, but I was charged $165.00. He then told my nephew, "You're paying," to which I replied, "No, I am paying for him." Carlos then remarked, "I wouldn't pay for him; I don't even let my son ride for free. Why would you pay for him?" This was very rude and made my nephew feel terrible about his weight. I would never return or recommend this place to anyone. read more

My mom, sister, and I all had a guided trail ride on their gaited horses. They tailored the ride to our experience level and what we wanted to do. There aren't enough stars on all of Yelp to say how amazing the folks at Running Horse Ranch are! I had a horse being transported across the US when everything went wrong. My horse was stranded in one place after another and it was getting less and less likely she would make it to me safely and in good health. I found Carlos from a horse stopover website and without doing my normal review-hunting, went ahead and booked a night for my horse to stay at his "motel." Turns out, this must have been divine intervention because my horse could not have ended up with better people than Carlos and Judi at Running Horse Ranch. They took the best care of her and kept me updated. They were even able to bring her to me so I didn't have to take off work and drive to Albuquerque (12 hours round trip). It's so rare to meet genuinely kind and honest people. I hope that I'll get to go down and ride at the ranch sometime, maybe even with my own horses! Had a wonderful private ride here. I forget the girls name who took me out but it was a much needed ride - good horse time which is always needed. They guys at the ranch were awesome and whoever I spoke to on the phone to set up the ride had a special character all his own. Hilarious! I'd stop here again and recommend them to anyone. The best place I could've been on the best day of my life. My boyfriend took me here when I came up to visit from Texas and we had an absolute blast. They gaged our skill level perfectly and planned accordingly. They made sure we were safe and even though we made like 10 turns on and off the trail, the guide new exactly where we were and how to give us the best ride possible. At the end of the ride my boyfriend proposed!! Although his plan was to do it on the ride (we were just to fast for him ;) , it was the best place I could've asked for it to happen . I am a great supporter of local businesses and volunteer in a local not-for-profit youth organization. In writing this critical post, I hope that the owner will read it and make amends as I wish no ill to this company but that they will grow from the failed experience that they provided to our group. We had a very bad experience from start to finish with this company. My wife planned an outing for around 15 girls and some parents, a trip costing just under $1400 (no discount provided). She had contact with a owner a couple times in advance of the ride and voiced some hesitation given his tone with her, but she overlooked it because of good reviews. The evening before, my wife fell ill and was unable to participate in the ride but found a replacement. On ride day, two girls weren't comfortable riding: one because of how the horses were being treated (she didn't even get on a horse) and the other because the owner "yelled" at her. My daughter was one of the riders and she said that the guides were "really nice" and that the owner was mean, making her and her friends feel uncomfortable. The parents of the girls requested refunds and the owner declined. Since my wife was responsible and paid for the trip on our family credit card, I made the follow up call to the business and spoke with the owner. When asked for the refund, he declined stating that the horses were prepared for the ride and it was the girls' choice not to ride. Then, objectively, I brought up the reason that they didn't ride and to this he replied that he didn't give a "damn." His aggressive, unkind tone made me, an adult, feel uncomfortable and surprised since I had no ill will. He then continued talking (not listening) to say that he would not provide his services to us in the future and then hung up on me (immediately without pause and without allowing me to say anything). He was closed to adult conversation, did not acknowledge any fault, and expressed that he didn't care about us or our future business. As not-for-profit youth organization volunteers, we are sad that there may not be other businesses who can provide horse rides for larger groups. The girls (ages 8-12)--not to mention their mothers--didn't deserve to be mistreated and demeaned by the owner on what could have been a very wonderful, once in a lifetime opportunity. In closing, my hope is that the following would occur: -That the owner speak and act courteously and professionally with customers, especially children. -That the horses be treated gently, with kindness Although in the heat of the moment he said that he would not provide services to us in the future, I hope that with these improvements we may in fact be able to return as the potential for a wonderful and life giving business certainly exists. read more

The trail was beautiful and the guide was helpful and sweet. Took two away because when we got on the horses "Carlos" asked which of the adults was a better rider. I said I could, because I am a better rider. Once on the trail things happened and I fell off the horse. It was an accident and no ones fault. Again the guide was sweet and amazing. Once back at the barn I informed "Carlos" that my helmet was cracked because I fell. He stated "You said you could ride, I told you she was a rough ride." He expressed he was angry with me and when I gave him the cracked helmet he never bothered to ask if I was ok, just made it clear he was mad. To be clear he asked which of the adults was a better rider. Extremely disappointed in his rude behavior. Again trail guide was sweet and kind and gave him a nice tip. read more

We have lived in ABQ for about 8 months and my son's cross country team practiced near this ranch. He loves riding so I surprised him and his sisters one Friday. I called a few days in advance and confirmed the day off. ABQ weather can change quickly hence the confirmation the day of. The staff was very friendly. They ponied my 8 year old which I appreciated because I was pretty nervous. Our group had about 10 riders and two leads. I was particularly nervous because my assigned bourse had a bit of a tizzy before we started but all ended without incident. This was my first trail ride where galloping was involved, the kids enjoyed that, me not so much. For $80 per person, you definitely get your two hours worth. read more

I'm surprised to see that this will be the first negative review. I would not recommend this business to anyone -- go somewhere run by a professional. I called on a Thursday to inquire about any openings for spots the following day. I was told to show up the following day for the 12 o clock ride. The only information asked of me was my name, which was red flag number one for me. I feel like a responsible business would get card info for a deposit, or at least a phone number. Anyways, I show up at 11:45 and Carlos informs me that he didn't think I was coming and he sent the ride off at 11:30. Red flag number two. Then he has the audacity to tell me that if I'm the only rider on a guided tour, it will cost me $120, rather than $80. I tell him that if that's the case, I'll just leave. Then he decides that he will have someone else guide me out to the tour and I can meet up with them there. Okay, whatever. When Carlos helps me onto the horse, he literally puts his entire hand on my crotch which was extremely uncomfortable and inappropriate and definitely not necessary. But at this point, I had already paid for the ride. I wish I would have stuck up for myself, but I didn't. The ride itself was okay, but they had me ride a horse that had just seen the ferrier and was very tender, so she didn't want to go any faster than a trot. Ryan was my guide and he was a very nice man, and very knowledgeable about the horses. Overall, I would not go to this business. Go somewhere else where you wont get overcharged and molested. I regret spending my money here. On an unrelated note, there were a few dogs out there on the ranch and they were both incredibly matted and badly needed to see a groomer. That tells you everything you need to know about this place. If they can't take care of their dogs, I wouldn't trust them with horses. read more

Carlos and his gang did an awesome job helping convince my son and my wife who have never been on a horse before conquer their fear and taking their first rides. We did a 2-hr private group with Jessica. Before the ride, Carlos had us arrive an hour early so that we could spend some time bonding with the horses. Morgan taught my son and my wife a lot about what to do and what not to do with the horses before the ride as she prepared the horses. Then during the entire ride, Jessica was constantly on the look out to check on my son and my wife to make sure they are safe and enjoying the ride. She also give me some pointers along the way to help me improve when she noticed me doing things wrong. Jessica was also very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and provided a wealth of information as we rode. In the end, two peope got hooked on horseback riding, and Carlos and his gang got three new fans. oh... also... his dogs are seriously entertaining. read more

This was my first time on a horse and I must say that Carlos and his team did an excellent job ensuring I felt comfortable the entire time. Our guide was very knowledgable about every horse in the group and the trail we rode on. At the midway point, she (our guide) stopped and took indivisual pictures of everyone in our group. My boyfriend Wesley and I visited Running Horse Ranch over our spring break and it was AMAZING! All of the employees were very friendly and the horses were clean and kind. They gave us gloves for our hands since it was chilly and gave us (extra) time outside of the 2-hour ride to meet our horses, brush them and more. Once we were ready to go, they taught us how to ride and guide the horses. Everyone was kind, patient and made us feel so comfortable. The trail was peaceful and long and we were able to run, trot and walk - the speed was up to the riders discretion!! We also had several photo ops which was nice to add to our memories of this trip. I had a great experience riding buttercup. My guide Lee was amazing as well. She taught the five of us how to trot and gallop. We had a beautiful and peaceful view. She even took us into the river.
