I had been wanting to do a Balloon Fiesta kayak/SUP trip for awhile now. Cody, and his wife Karen, were really knowledgeable throughout this SUP trip about anything paddleboarding, about the river, how the company came to be and its name (it's "just Mountain Standard Time"), etc. He has tours almost year round from snowshoeing/ brewery, mountain biking, birding, and photography tours. Because of traffic, we left the parking lot about 6:15 am and returned just after 11. The water levels were low, but the SUP's did just fine in most areas. The cost of the trip was definitely worth it. We had about 14 in our group. And since the tour was only running the first week of balloon fiesta, it sold out less than a week after being advertised and I didn't get a chance to ask others if they wanted to go as well (but it was totally fine solo and everyone was friendly and welcoming). I didn't want to get wet, so I didn't try standing up for a first timer, but I feel like this trip gave me more courage to try standing next time and trying something new. The highlight of the trip was being able to see a few balloons splash n'dash. Also, Cody and Karen arranged a nice little setup with a paddleboard balanced on two buckets with a tablecloth over for a little breakfast of mimosas, a fire for s'mores, assorted granola bars, and hot water in a thermos for hot chocolate and coffee while we waited and watched for the balloons. I don't usually write reviews for services/ non food businesses but MST Adventures was really exceptional. A couple friends and I decided to go camping for a weekend in various parts of New Mexico and were looking for a way to get our hands on some camping gear that we wouldn't have to throw away when we left. After calling the REI store to ask about rentals, they suggested talking to Corey and Michael who run MST. I called and they picked up instantly and walked us through different options and were even willing to lower the price to be for 3 people instead of 4. Their customer service is excellent and they were flexible when offering to deliver our camping gear early to the hotel we were staying at before we flew in. As for the actual gear, everything was super clean (I think it was new, but I couldn't tell so that's how clean it was). Every piece of gear was high quality and worked exactly with no missing parts. I just had to let everybody know about my day tour with MST Adventures (the snowshoe edition)! I booked a snowshoe tour with MST Adventures to help me adjust to hiking in the cold and the snow, something I've never done before. I'm SO glad I did this, because I've discovered a new passion, and a great bunch of folks to help me find/take really neat trips in New Mexico. Corey was my guide on this trip and he was brilliant. He set up my tour (and promptly rescheduled it when the snow was not co-operative the first weekend), then he met me at the trail head with snowshoes, some poles, and pack full of safety gear and some snacks. We spent a few minuets in the parking lot going over the safety stuff and basic snowshoeing, until I felt comfortable heading out into the gusty, grey wilderness with Corey leading the way. We had a really nice hike that went at my beginner pace. Corey explained how to keep track of the trail, and then we chatted away about all sorts of outdoors stuff. Corey had some great suggestions for other trails I might want to try in the area and was just all around easy and fun to talk to. By the time we turned around to head back to the cars, the sun had come out and the snow was sparkling white against the purple clouds. Gorgeous! I've rented paddle boards from MST before, and I intend to do their river paddle tour during Balloon fiesta. My partner and I just completed the 6 session Fitness SUP series with MST Adventures. Although I had some paddle board experience, I wanted to use the series as a way to learn more and get comfortable padding in a variety of conditions. Not only are Corey and Michael experienced guides, they are also competitive paddlers with a background in wildlife biology. I learned many paddling techniques, and how to read the river. We practiced down stream, as well as up river paddling, with a head wind, and in changing weather, etc. Each session was not only a rigorous workout, but a chance to connect with the group, to enjoy the beauty of the river, and to see a lot of wildlife that you can't see from sitting on the banks. I took the SUP Balloon Fiesta tour this week and have to say, Corey and Michael are awesome! They take care of everything from the SUP equipment and dry bags to snacks and drinks to river knowledge and bird watching. We were lucky enough to experience the splash 'n dash during the balloon fiesta - it was like nothing I've ever seen before, and probably the most amazing thing I've ever experienced! Absolutely incredible. Corey and Michael are so knowledgeable and expertly guided us down the Rio Grande, even though the water levels were low - they knew the river well enough to keep us on our boards and we were able to avoid getting stuck in the shallow areas (would definitely not have been able to do it without them). They let you go at your own pace and are helpful and accommodating, whatever your needs are. Their main concern is that everyone has a good time and stays safe. Balloon fiesta or not, these guys are awesome and you should definitely check them out for all of your adventure needs! I'll definitely be back next year! My friend Suzette and I went out on a snowshoeing bird tour with Michael and Corey last week. We had no idea it was going to be as much fun and as educational as it was. We rented all of our equipment from MST (snowshoes, poles, and gators) and met the co-owners at a designated spot up on the crest. These guys are amazing guides! They are knowledgable about the bird population of the area, but also about ecology and eco-systems and geology. They had lots of bird books to share with us . They enjoy what they do, and never intimidated or made us feel like total goober snowshoers! It was so much fun! They create the environment for a safe, enjoyable adventure. Both are experienced in many outdoor adventures, and they are comfortable and capable guides. We were out for about 3.5 hours.They adjusted the pace to our needs, and provided a midway snack of healthy foods and warm drinks. I had dropped my phone somewhere in the very deep snow, and they successfully tracked it down !!! You get two cool dudes with tons of knowledge and experience, who can provide the necessary environment for you to have a fun, safe experience. Whether you go with them, or just rent the equipment and go out on your own, they are open to give you tips and information about how to make it great. I can't recommend MST Adventures highly enough. Michael and Corey are not just enthusiastic about what they do, they are extremely knowledgeable about the wilderness and gear. The trip down the river was part adventure, and part outdoor classroom, with a liberal sprinkling of Michael's corny jokes. I would highly recommend MST whatever your level of experience as long as you are looking to enjoy yourself. I am hoping that they will offer some overnight SUP trips next summer. read more
