Upon our arrival on the day of the ride, he inquired about my nephew's and niece's weights. My nephew stated he weighed 310 pounds and my niece said she weighed 235 pounds. The cutoff is 240 pounds, so he insisted on charging an additional person's fee. It should have been $120.00 plus, but I was charged $165.00. He then told my nephew, "You're paying," to which I replied, "No, I am paying for him." Carlos then remarked, "I wouldn't pay for him; I don't even let my son ride for free. Why would you pay for him?" This was very rude and made my nephew feel terrible about his weight. I would never return or recommend this place to anyone.

I thought this place would be great, especially with so many 4/5 star reviews. I could go when I wanted for a reasonable fee every month. That was until I met Carlos, the owner, who was rude the minute I introduced myself. I thought it was fun at first but, after weeks of going, the rude comments really started to pick at my recovering brain. I was told by other leasees not to let him get to me (they were all great btw) but, as a former drug addict who learned to love and appreciate myself again, I found myself almost in tears from his rude comments rather than enjoying my time by connecting with the horses. Out on the trail was wonderful, but being belittled by Carlos almost every visit made me feel stupid and unworthy of someday becoming an experienced rider. I am not the greatest but I do know how to ride. What ended my ties with Running Horse Ranch is the day he called me a liar. Anyone in recovery knows how much we, as addicts, work so hard to earn trust again and have that liar label ripped off of our chests. I know Carlos doesn't care but I really hope he takes his rudeness into consideration before he says anything. We don't know what people have been through or what are going through and negative comments can really run someone into the ground. If he wants to be a grumpy old man then fine, be that way, but as a businessman, don't treat your paying customers like s***. I really wanted to take my family out and enjoy the trails with me when I leased, but I also did not want to expose a 6 year old to potential rudeness out of the fear of what Carlos might say. In conclusion, I would not recommend coming here unless you are used to being verbally abused on the regular. Find a place that will treat you kindly, that is the best decision I made and I am finally reconnecting with my passion of horses and riding again.

A few pros: Chance is a truly a personable, patient and interesting individual. He showed me how to develop trust with my horse, explained horse behavior and psychology, kindly corrected my mistakes, and taught me about balance + how to stand in the stirrups. During the Great Bathroom Tissue Famine, we'd pulled our hair out trying to find something, anything, for our kiddo to DO on the weekend, what with the masking and the distancing and the rest. Following just one visit, I'm very confident we've found our southwestern huckleberry. First, ya gotta sit down with the owner of this place, Margo(t?). She's a card. Running this ranch out of a comfortable double-wide on the high plains of Corrales, she's been there, done that and watched the area morph, over the years, from rags to riches. All the while, she's taken in rich and poor kids -- girls, mainly -- and turned them into equine stewards. As opposed to other ranches around the 505 (we've explored), High C Acres begins by teaching kids to groom, saddle and care for the horses. Our daughter's first lesson ran more than two and a half hours, and I won't quote the incredible price. Margo says she generally has between 30-40 students, of all ages and walks of life, at any given time. These people arrange regular, hour-long visits, to ride and care for the beautiful beasts. She's quick to explain the actual costs of horse ownership, particularly following a mild winter when feed costs are bound to escalate. My kid enjoyed a distanced, masked introduction to this way of life, alongside one of her good friends. It's likely the best money we've spent on Famine entertainment since we all began hoarding. Don't be surprised if there's simply no room at the stable when you call.

My city-mouse friend mentioned that she had always dreamed of petting a horse, so when we drove past an eclectic looking stable with gorgeous horses (seriously looks like something out of a movie), I figured it was worth a shot to see if we could meet the animals. I told my friend, "What's the worst they could say? No?" I parked my car and walked up to what looked like the main building, and I was greeted by a sleepy grey cat and outrageously cute little dog. A man that I presume is the owner followed behind the dog and asked me if I needed help. After pitching my request to him, offering money to let my friend just spend some time visiting the horses, he kindly told me that we were welcome to respectfully walk around for free. He told us we could meet any horse that came up to us, but reminded us to not feed the horses. By the looks of the horses, the man I spoke to clearly cares for these animals deeply, and I was really taken by the cleanliness and health of the horses. In the end, my friend was able to meet a horse for the first time, and my kids loved seeing the beautiful animals. They especially loved the sweet grey cat and inquisitive one-eyed horse. We will definitely be back to schedule a ride here, as I was so impressed by the animals and thankful for the kindness we were shown. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Broken Saddle!

Give Lorenzo a raise!…read more My wife and I were vacationing with friends in Santa Fe who have family in NM and had been on these rides a few times before. My wife is a former show rider, so we all made the drive down for an evening ride. I was put on Hollywood, who is a good boy, despite his headstrong nature. With us were a family visiting from London: Mum, Dad, and two sons aged 10 and 7. Our guide was leading us, and Lorenzo the wrangler was bringing up the rear. The ride itself was beautiful, and relatively calm, if a little boring- there wasn't much commentary, and we didn't get to go up and see any petroglyphs, which I was told would happen, although I wasn't the one who booked it or looked into things beforehand. Part of this may have been due to the fact that the older child's horse, Johnny Cash, was going very slowly, so only myself and my friend were up with the guide while the rest of the party was a ways behind with Lorenzo. We were about 2/3 of the way through and on the loop back when Johnny Cash started actively ailing, and twice tried to lie down with the older kid still riding. The kid was fine, as everyone was paying good attention, and he jumped off like they told him to with no problem. The first time he got back up on the horse, but the second time we stopped and decided that Johnny Cash was in no shape to continue. Our guide was understandably distressed, and was trying to coordinate pickup from the ranch while keeping the rest of us steady and safe. The stopping and Johnny Cash's distress also started getting to our horses; Hollywood was especially ornery, and our guide wisely instructed me to dismount, and my wife later had to get off hers as well due to its attitude. Eventually reinforcements arrived and were able to cart us back to the ranch, and they didn't charge us, although we all made donations. Cash's distress was the most upsetting part, which wasn't anybody's fault, but he did start trying to drop and roll, which could have quickly caused fatal intestinal torque. It was at this point that Lorenzo leapt into action with a calm professionalism that a U.S. Marine under fire could only dream of. He rigorously kept Cash walking for most of the time to clear his intestinal blockage, and when the horse tried to roll, Lorenzo kept him in check. Lorenzo's own horse, Malibu, cantered off a short distance during the ruckus, but he kept his calm and eventually retrieved her when he was done. All the while night was falling, coyotes started howling in the distance, and he fielded constant questions and comments from the kids with an easygoing charm that never dropped. At one point he was calmly leading two or three of the ornery horses. I hope Johnny Cash is okay, but at least I know that he walked back to the stable on his own four hooves, and we have Lorenzo to thank for that.
