I bought tennis shoes last night, but after I walked around a little I realized they were too tight. I wiped off the little bit of dirt, and took them back this morning for their 14 day return/exchange policy. They refused. Any WEAR was already THERE. I use to be an avid visitor to Runners Route while living in Honolulu. Most of my visits were while meeting with Honolulu runners, which is the stores running group that meets every Tuesday evening. Other than running with the running group, I have got the chance to look around plus get to know some of the Runners Route staff, which made me feel very welcome being part of the running group. Runners Route carries a great selection of shoe brands such as Mizuno, New Balance, Saucony and Asics. I loved the fact that Runners Route is so in tune with the running community in Hawaii. In my opinion, Runners Route also seems to be the liaison between connecting runners in the Japanese community with runners in the Hawaii community via their running club. As for this stores location parking can get kind of snug at Runners Route depending on the day of your visit, but if it is then there is also that option to park in several garages in the area if it gets too crowded. On a side note, visiting/ leaving the store can be a headache in the afternoons due to Kapiolani Blvd being a gateway to Ala Moana Mall/ Waikiki, plus other businesses in the area as well as exiting the area. Recently, a friend recommended Runners Route on Kapi'olani to me. We decided to check it out this morning, and we were IMPRESSED. Aya and her associate demonstrated their expertise..... measurements, inspecting old shoes, assessing how we walk, etc, etc. I learned things I never knew before..... that no other shoe store had noticed or pointed out. We left the store feeling that we'd made very good purchases...... Mizuno and Brooks..... and a tank top as well. The pricing was very good...... and I'll say it again..... the customer service and knowledge shared....... AMAZING! Obviously I highly recommend...... Parking entrance is through Sheridan St. It took me two loops to figure it out. If you're coming from Kapiolani there is another parking lot you can cut through to get to Sheridan St. The store has predominantly running shoes and other sneakers as well as running accessories. The staff is well informed about the shoes and needs of people. The employee asked me to do a serious of walk, jog, and do squats to analyze my feet. It was identical to what my physical therapist had me do. The sales rep brought me three pairs of shoes to try on. The first one he recommended were ones that were on sale. I opted for an expensive pair ($120) because they felt so much better. Upon purchasing them I checked on Amazon and Zappos to see if the price compared to Runners Route and they did (phew!) The only thing that I found odd was that they don't accept returns or offer an option for defective shoes. When you spend a lot on shoes I'd like to have some sort of guarantee or option. They did tell me that if something was wrong with the shoes they could reach out to the company for me. read more

Honolulu Marathon is just around the corner. (I know it sounds crazy but it's in my bucket list. Teehee ). I'm so happy that Runners Route is part of my journey while in training. They are a specialized running store. It's a spacious store - lots of running gears to choose from - socks, shoes, apparel, sports nutrition products, you name it, they have it! They also have a parking space. It's not crowded but it's gets busy during their holiday sales and the day before big races like Kings Runner, Hapalua, Ekiden, Honolulu Marathon to name some. Cant find better people who know running shoes than Runners Route. This has been my go-to running shoe store for years. Both Spencer and Darren are incredible with knowing the product lines and what shoes work best for your foot. This small store carries many famous brands. I suffer from Metatarsalgia which is very painful and needed a shoe with a firm upper shoe so my foot does not bend as much. They literally had me try on every shoe that was a possibility until I found the Brooks Adrenaline shoe. I loved them so much I ran out the store with these new shoes on. Yes, o paid for them. Huge selection of shoes, socks, and apparel for a tiny little store. Ample parking and friendly staff. We walked in and were promptly greeted. The gentleman helped my son find his first pair of track sprinting spikes. They luckily had two left in stock which happened to be his size and half size up (during track season)! The employee (wish I had gotten his name) properly gave his opinion of the size shoe based on the fit of the two different sizes. He also led us to suggestions of socks and it didn't feel like he was trying to upsell us, merely informing. First time here. Went in to get running shoes for the hubby participating in the Honolulu Marathon this weekend. They are less then 5min from my house, behind Wal-Mart Keaamoku. Location was convenient and they had a 20% marathon discount for those participating. Perfect! They were about 25min from closing yet they were so accommodating. They didn't rush us in any way. Sales women explained thoroughly the shoe fit and style best for my husbands needs. We walked out with shoes, socks some necessary items needed for Sundays run. 2 thumbs up, will be back for shoes should I need to get me some. read more

I needed a new pair of running shoes. I figured this is the best place to go! I figured they'll know which pair is best for my feet. I walked in and was greeted by a friendly employee. I told him I needed a new pair of running shoes. "You've come to the right place!" he replied! This place has a lot of shoes to choose from - a lot!! I told him I have a high arched feet and asked which shoes best for my feet. I didn't really get an informative answer - he just asked what kind of shoes i currently have. I guess based on that, they recommended something similar. And since I was looking at the New Balance Minimus, they showed me "minimal" design shoes. Anyway, since I like the look of the NB shoes, I went and got this. Wish they recommended something for my high-arched feet rather than the style I liked. read more

Wow this place literally saved me from so much pain. I had had killer pain in the front of my shins and the helpful people here didn't even try to sell me a shoe. They said the shoes I had were fine but that I was running too fast too soon and not stretching enough. Went in here the other day and was very pleased with my experience. I came in with specific requirements of what kind of shoe I wanted. The associate listened, then gave me options on what I should choose. Each one got better and I ended up with the final option. I just like how every time one shoe option was missing a feature I wanted, the sale associate got the right shoe after with the missing feature to end up at the perfect shoe. Also, I like how every time I questioned something about the shoe, I was given explanations. I like to know why that's just how I am lol. Other things about this store other than the great expertise in shoe knowledge is that there is military discount of 20% on shoes and apparel. Plus, there is parking for the store which I missed but just want other shoe finders out there to know lol. Lastly, the variety of shoes to choose from that stands out a lot for me. Be aware that if you buy something in this store and then find the right color, right size not available in the store but found on Saucony site, you will NOT get a refund but a store credit. That was NOT told to me when I bought the shoes, just that I could return them within 10 days (or some arbitrary date). If there was something I liked in the store's slim selections, that would have been great, but there was nothing I wanted to buy but shoes. I was stuck having to get a shirt for my nephew and a too small shirt for myself. I was extremely disappointed! I will not return to that store for any running supplies. read more

I have been looking for a pair of Hoka sneakers for a few months now and I went to a few running stores but none of them were helpful enough to get me into a pair I liked. This store was exceptional! It was so awesome having every single employee listen to all of my wants/needs in a running shoe. I can't brag enough about their service and selection of sneakers and running gear! I am really happy with my purchase (which I bought almost two months ago and it just took me forever to write this review)! SOOOOO... after football, there came Basketball. Now that basketball is done, what's next? Track it is! Came here about half hour before closing time and i have to say, the customer service alone in this place is the reason for my 5 star. Two young gentlemen assisting my son, so patiently. Getting whatever size he wanted, asked questions and talked story with him along the way. To me that was a plus because let's just say if i had to "review" my son's attitude this night, he would've gotten a 1 or maybe 1.5 stars from me! Teenagers!!! This store specializes in running clothes and running shoes in a lot of different brands like Adidas, Nike, ASICS, and of course, other brands that's unlikely to have a million dollar athlete endorser like Saucony. But who knows? Maybe they do. I could be the ignorant one. Ha! My son's attitude quickly jumped to 3.5 stars when he finally found a shoe he was happy with. The selection here was vast and prices are not absurd. Topping of this night's experience was being told about the student athlete discount of 20% off!! Whaaaaat?!! Yah! Just show your student ID! I have worked across the street from this business for almost 3 years and had never stepped foot (no pun intended) until this weekend. There are numerous running stores around the island and each avid runner has his/her preference. I chose to give this one a shot...especially since I noticed my current running shoes were showing their age. At first, finding the entrance into the parking lot was a bit tricky since the one on Kapiolani is actually the exit. The entrance is around the corner, across from Blue Cross Animal Hospital. The staff was friendly and immediately attentive. They always seem to have a sale but I was looking for a specific shoe. The gentleman took me to my shoe right away, but because I am a pink fanatic, they didn't come in "my color". I asked him to shoe me comparable shoes in other brands and he did. He had me try on about 4 different pairs of shoes and I finally found one! Granted, it was about $60 more than I was wanting to pay but I think they'll be worth it. To top it off, not only was he wearing the men's version of said shoe, but a female employee was wearing that shoe in a different color. I'd say that was great marketing! Upon checkout, the lady also gave me a 20% off coupon for my next visit...which I will be utilizing in the very near future! Pricey? Yes. They will ask a series of questions and have you walk and do several squat. They will bring you a number of shoes to try on. I have been here before, but this time around, there was a guy who was pretty knowledgeable with what I wanted. This is a specialty running store for the casual runner to the seasoned athlete. Shoes, clothes, socks, and other accessories are here. The guy answered my question without any problem and he was confident in his answer. This place has a good selection of shoes. The last time, there was these two sales people who did not know jack about running or shoes. That just bites. The store is nearby Ala Moana Shopping Center and has its own private parking lot. Its a quaint place and somewhat empty when I was in there a few times. I guess people don't buy running shoes on the weekends, when they are out and about hammering the roads / trails? Quite possibly!! I wouldn't pay more for what they are offering though. Some MSRP prices are just a bit too much for me. Your best bet would be to price compare and choose what works best. Its easy to get started with running. An easy activity that does not require much, except your time and effort. And shoes. They may seem pricey at first, but once you get fitted properly, you're all set. read more

I am not a shopper, let alone a shoe shopper. However, when it comes to getting my walking/jogging/running shoes, I always turn to Runners Route for their expertise and advice. As far as I know of, they offer the same selection of brands and shoes that you can find at other shoe stores in Ala Moana or Kahala Mall. However, the reason why I come here is because the workers are usually runners themselves. They have experience and expertise on the shoes they are selling (usually because they have used the shoes themselves); experience that one usually does not find at the run-of-the-mill shoe store. When I bought my last pair of shoes, it was because I planned on running more often with the goal of training for the marathon later this year (please do not ask me about how I am doing with my training...let's just say, not well at all). The employee that helped me was very knowledgeable and helped me find the right shoe that can help to achieve my goal. He even asked me to walk, bare foot and with shoes on, in the store to see how I walked to help my shoe selection and to see if I needed an insole. Runners Route is also a good resource center for upcoming races and training for those races. All the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. If you are training to do a marathon or just planning to do more walking/jogging/running, then I highly suggest coming down to Runners Route to get your shoes. read more

Runners route is a runners in paradise specially for someone like me to only wear wide with, shoe where I would go through 10 stores and not find one that really fits me comfortable and perfectly the way I want to. They have a large selection of sizes and brands. The manager there is very accommodating whatever I need I tried total of nine shoes before I was able to pick the one I will need one for a person to wear extra wide for you it's hard to come by to find the right shoe. Every time I come into town I make sure to stop by and pick up a shoe on the island of Maui I cannot find a shoe that fits me I come all the way by a shoe well worth the trip. read more

DON'T SHOP HERE!!! The Japanese Manager there (female from Japan) is the worst person I have ever had contact with in a retail establishment. She does not know what customer service is. Twice I had to deal with her and both times she was such a Bi$&h! First time I went in to exchange a pair of shoes for a different size, I had the receipt and she treated me like I was trying to rip them off. The shoe I wanted wasn't available in my size, so I chose something else and it was a little less expensive, instead of offering me a refund for the difference, she made her sales associate tell me that I had to forfeit the difference or buy something else and pay the difference. I was okay with that but it was the way she said it and looked at me that made me upset. Today I went in to exchange a gift. I had originally gone to the Kapahulu store on three different occasions earlier this month and today, but they were closed each time, there was a note saying they were closed for a few days. So I broke down and went to the Kapiolani store even if I didn't want to because I didn't want to deal with that damn lady again. I asked if I could exchange a gift and the young boys who were working were nice enough to start helping me, but then she came along and told me without a receipt I couldn't exchange it. All I wanted was to get something else that was actually more expensive and I was going to pay the difference. It was a gift and I was told that's where it was purchased! She told me no, even if it was never worn and they had that exact shoe right there! She again treated me like I was trying to rip them off or doing something wrong. I guess if you're not from Japan, you get treated like sh&t here! SO Locals, don't give them your business, shop at the Running Room on Kapahulu instead! Such nice, helpful people there who want to help Locals. The owners should really rethink if they want someone like her representing their company. She is so bad for business! First time here and not my last. So friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, but most of all, THEY CARE. This might look a little long, but I couldn't make myself shorten it. Aya and Darren (so sorry if I am spelling your names wrong!) - wish I could give more than 5 stars. Aya is the manager and Darren is the representative who assisted me. Shopping for my son going into the military, I wanted shoes specifically for running. Darren asked questions and listened to a rambling mom as I explained my son's foot pains, leg pains, etc. with the current shoes he has. He immediately narrowed their abundant shoe stock to 4 shoe choices based on our conversation, and FYI, he showed me the lower priced ones first sharing honestly what each shoe type had to offer, and explained my son probably wouldn't need the little higher priced ones for what he would be using the running shoes for. Honestly though, all their prices are really fair (and great shoe choices on sale) plus the shoe quality is outstanding, (my son's input is below). The other best part was taking the shoes home to my son and seeing his face as he tried them out. He seriously had this incredulous look on his face. He said "mom, these are awesome! I couldn't even do this and this when you got home (as he is showing me his running stances) because my feet and calves were all sore and now with these shoes on, it feels like I can go run some more right now! My foot just rolls forward now, no strain, so comfortable. Wow these are so great, thanks mom!" I couldn't stop smiling =D Darren and Aya helped me get the right shoes for my son without him even trying it on, and I was secure in buying them as Aya informed me that I could easily exchange them if my son felt they didn't feel right for him. I love this place. This is my second time here. Both times I have been very impressed by the service and the knowledge of the staff. First time I came was to buy a Garmin GPS watch. The lady who attended me had answers to all my questions and found me a model which has been perfect for my needs. Today I bought a pair of shoes. I explained to them the difficulties I have had with various brands in the past, and they connected with an excellent new pair. They are well versed in the pros and cons of various models of shoe. Finding a good pair of running shoes is like finding the right pace during a long run. Running is an enjoyable sport which doesn't require too much equipment: shoes, apparel, socks, etc. It's crucial to make sure you are fitted with the proper footwear to get the most of your workout. If you decide come for a new pair of shoes, be sure to stop by Runners Route located on Kapiolani Blvd. across the street from the Blue Cross Animal Hospital. After reading some of the previous reviews, many folks were discouraged with the staffs' lack of customer service. During my visits, I'm already set on the type of shoes I wear and don't need as much assistance. But during my injury phase, I decided to transition to a different pair and they were glad to assist. When you walk in, you'll notice they have an abundance of Asics brand shoes. I've heard they are owned by Asics (Japan) but can not confirm. They also sell apparel mostly geared for runners. Be sure to check out their sales. Throughout the year, they have major markdowns on their older Asics models which are updated yearly. For example, the Asics GT2100 series are always discounted in December. Give this place a try - especially if you're an Asics fan. If you don't get the customer attention you're hoping for, try somewhere else. read more

Oh my gosh, thank you TOMO your service is just outstanding! The place is super easy to find and although there was a customer before me and one somewhat during my meeting with Tomo, he handled it well and was very thorough and professional. I'm generally the customer who tests limits. Not intentionally, mind you but I do not hesitate to ask a ton of questions and/or try on every relevant pair of shoes within my price range or style, etc. I want to know ALL of my options. Before heading down, I called to find out if they had my usual "ASICS Gel Kayano" in wide with as I have luau feet and it's tough to come by my size in a wide width. Before saying "yes, we do" he actually asked if it were okay to put me on hold and CHECKED for my size. Nice. When I got there he was ready with the shoes within minutes. Additionally, for each pair I showed remote interest in...which had my size available, they were out, in front of me, unlaced and ready for me to try on. I ran around and put about a quarter mile on each of the shoes (j/k) which didn't phase him at all. Just when I thought that I'd settled on my Gel Kayanos, I asked him for any other options... he took a look at my stance, stride and asked me to do a couple of things (walk forward a little, squat a little) in order to check out how my feet work, I guess. Then he comes out with this pair of running shoes which I absolutely fell in LOVE with. It was like cheating! For the past 4 years, I'd purchased a new pair of ASICS Gel-Kayanos every single year and here I was committing to purchasing a pair of Brooks Ghost 6! When you think you have found the best, don't stop there because you never know what else you might find and I love these shoes. I have come here a couple times and I have yet to have a good experience. I have actually quit coming here unless they have something I absolutely need and can't get elsewhere. The only recent example of this is they had the Garmin Forerunner 10 watch in orange my hubby had been wanting - and so he ventured down to get it. He said the guy who helped him this time was different then the guy who has helped us every other time in the past and was very friendly and knowledgeable. I am a bit suspicious.... But if this is the case, and hubby wouldn't steer me wrong, I MAY be willing to try Runners Route again. So why the distaste you may be wondering. Well each time I have been here the man in the store seems very uninterested in my business and seems annoyed when I asked him ANY type of question. His service is very off putting and he seemed to care less. I am all about service and the only guy I have ever interacted with here is a prime example of what not to do. It really is unfortunate because this store has a great selection, good parking, good business hours but I would not return to Runners Route unless, like stated earlier, they had something I absolutely needed ASAP and couldn't get anywhere else.
