We were strolling around Ala Moana Center when we noticed the May 10th opening of this local Aloha sportswear store. Located at the Diamond Head Wing on the Mall Level, the new store is sandwiched between Martin & MacArthur and Oncöur. This location has a lot more pedestrian traffic than its former mauka wing.
Kahala Sportswear is Honolulu's oldest operating apparel operation, family-owned and first to manufacture Aloha shirts. They pride themselves on original artwork, and each print "tells a story." That being said, my husband looks for Aloha shirts that are uniquely "Hawaiian" and neutral in tone. Sheesh, after 40+ years of marriage, I've since given up getting him to wear brighter colors or jewel tones.
Entering the store, we were immediately greeted by Greg and Jessica (JJ). Both were friendly, professional, and appreciative of our visit. I mentioned that I knew about their Grand Opening but missed it but, I'm glad that I brought my husband here to upgrade his holoholo clothes. As I talked to Greg and asked about the store's business hours, he introduced me to Jessica or JJ, the manager of this store, who answered my questions as I started to create this business page on Yelp. Meanwhile, my husband was browsing the store but suddenly went back to the display at the entrance of Kahala's newest print, Hale Kau Lāau (treehouse). I think his former architectural, engineering, and construction careers drew him to this shirt's printed design, but as long as he's happy with it, I'm delighted for his selection. But, hey, he's going to wear it!
My husband appreciates the feel of the fabric (100% cotton) and natural fit of Kahala's Aloha shirts... it doesn't look so oversized where his naturally tall and thin physique "swims" in it, nor is the fit so slim-cut that he feels like a sausage in a casing. While he was trying on the shirts for fit, he also tried on a pair of the Rambler board shorts. We were in and out of the store with very lovely Aloha wear in about 15 minutes. My husband said he'd return soon for a couple more shirts and that both Greg and Jessica made his shopping very pleasant (no pressure-selling and easy-going).
Because we're still in this pandemic, we laud Kahala for their social distancing, the limit of customers, face mask-wearing, and hand sanitizing. We're happy to see them open during these difficult times for in-person sales along with their internet business. Their business hours are Mon-Fri 11 am to 7 pm and Sun 12 pm to 6 pm. If you need directions or want to contact them, their phone number is (808) 941-4010.
Welcome back to Ala Moana Center, and we wish them continued successes. read more
