The food was cold. The flavors are there but in every dish wasn't executed the way it should be. Our table of 4 had duck breast, meatloaf, and 2 orders of Gnocchi. The duck breast was hot. The mole is served cold. The butternut squash was lukewarm. The gnocchi was cold but the flavor of the meat sauce was average. The gnocchi itself was a little dense, could have been a little more pillowy. For homemade we were hoping for better. The meatloaf was flavored well but it was cold and the mash potatoes was cold and runny. The atmosphere is lacking. With a few corrections it has potential. read more

It's been a minute since I've stopped in to Ruins, and I've just realized that I need to make it in here more often! I think many of you are familiar with how their menu works. This month they are doing a Chinese Menu! For the most part it is really good! I am hoping to come back again and try some more off their menu. Pictured is the delicious Beef with black vinegar, soy and rosemary over some rice. Next is the ever so tasty Pork Belly w/ Hoisin, carrots, and cherries. Next is the Shrimp dumpling, and then Tofu w/ Broccoli which was ordered by Two things that are not pictured was Fried Shrimp ad salted rice which was way to salty for my pallet, others may disagree. Unpretentious place with very tasty and creative small plates. I've been here several times and have never been disappointed - always multiple interesting and unique choices on the menu. Friendly service. The bartender(s) are very good, and the cocktails are excellent. The restaurant is quite small so at popular times expect to wait. The food is always great here, but we've been seriously let down by the service the last two visits. They are consistently understaffed and we couldn't even get our water refilled during a previous visit. We decided to try it again last night for Valentine's Day but they were using a room from their other restaurant next door with a row of two tops set against a brick wall to get more butts in seats. The waitress said they had sawed down the tables that day. I can understand a small business wanting to capitalize on Valentine's Day, but it felt very deceptive. I booked Ruins weeks ago, but we were sat in a space next door (HUNT) with no ambiance - the room looked like it was bare and under construction - and much less comfortable seating. We read the reviews. Several friends raved. So we were stoked to try Ruins. We arrived to find a sorta funky dive which gives it some street cred beyond serving just ambiance. The evening's menu was sorta Mexican... which honestly made me wary because we have yet to find any Mexican food in Spokane worth returning to eat. But being open minded, we stayed and ordered the $12 specialty drinks. The bartender's unique take on a Moscow Mule was great -- quite tasty. The other drink, featuring fresh squeezed watermelon and tequila, was flavorless - other than being so bitter as to be undrinkable. We forged ahead and ordered three dishes between us. The Mexican pizza was overloaded with crema and nacho cheese and the tortilla was dripping in oil. Eating it devolves into a soggy car wreck. 15 minutes later... the chicken quesadilla with mango salsa arrived. It was really good... but $13? It'd better be at that lofty price point. Another 10 minute wait for the fajitas with chimichurri. Good but served with only 3 pieces of meat and one cold flour tortilla. Seriously? Three tiny pieces of meat. How hard is it to warm a tortilla? Maybe the server left it in the window too long. The chef should have pulled it back because at $16, this portion size is completely criminal. It was annoying that the dishes came out one by one. Ruins is not a tapas bar. And while we were sharing... they did not know this. "Piece meal" is not how this is supposed to work, indicating the kitchen and wait staff are not remotely in sync. A chef's skill rests not only in culinary talent and a adept flavor profile but also in timing. The latter was sorely lacking. So all in all disappointing for different reasons. Made all the more so when you realize Ruins employs a rotating menu concept. When attempting multiple cuisines, you absolutely have to be a world class chef for your dishes to compete with the focus and mastery of those who specialize in a single style. There are only a handful of chefs worldwide who can pull that off dish after dish, week after week. The flashes of skill revealed in the mango salsa reveal genuine talent in the kitchen... but maybe it should be concentrated, replicated and perfected so every dish coming out of the kitchen is worthy of its high price tag (or wait time). Maybe this chef's true genius resides in Southeast Asian recipes? Or maybe it's Austrian? You might never know. But even if this chef hits a schnitzel homerun, it will be off menu in short order, making the chef's culinary A-D-D a real gamble. Why not just run daily or weekly specials based on seasonal freshness and availability to achieve a more global eclectic menu? We wish Ruins the best, but sadly, it won't be on our rotation. read more

I took my mom, boyfriend and his mom out to dinner for my mom's birthday. I spent over a week debating where to go and finally decided ruins because I've heard such great things. I was extremely disappointed with our experience, unfortunately. We had the watermelon and heirloom tomato salads as well as both desserts, which were all great. However, both my boyfriend and my entrees were cold. I got the poblano peppers with shredded chicken and the chicken was lukewarm on the edges and cold in the middle. My rice was crunchy and cold. My boyfriend got the gringo tacos and they were cold. I don't understand how we could spend nearly $300 on a meal and not get hot, made to order food that is tippy top. Will not go back. read more

This place is pretty unassuming from the outside. Less than a block from the jail I found myself wondering just how many people stopped here for an amazing meal after spending some time in the clink. Service was a little inattentive but kind and helpful. Decor is cute but the fixtures could use some serious updating and reupholstering. I am all for retro but degraded is something else. Food options are limited but everything on the menu is amazing. We came in just at the doors were unlocked and within a half an hour there wasn't an open seat in the house. This place was recommended by a near by coffee shop and I'm so glad I went. I actually went the another time but they were closing so this time I made to to have enough time to eat. I sat at the tiny yet cozy bar. I want to say the interior is like a diner-like seating but I dare not say this is diner at all. My servers/bartender was friendly and conversational rather than let's get on with the order. Started with a clean old fashioned which my bartender executed perfectly. Nothing like starting a dinner with a bad old fashioned so way to go! Though I didn't choose the recommendations (felt like an @ss because I asked for it) which I normally do I chose the mood I was in which was the kale, raisin, polenta as a starter and the pork belly (the name escapes me) as my main. Knowing Ruins was shown on Drive-Ins, Diners, and Dives, I was able to make it there to lunch one recent Friday. I had an excellent shrimp po boy along with a tasty Caesar salad. Went for mcruins night last night and we were pretty disappointed. We had heard it was great so we had high expectations so maybe that led to the dissatisfaction. We ordered the Nashville chicken which had great flavor but very thick, which made it dry. The bacon burger was best part. The animal style fries were horrible. They were cold which made the cheese hard and inedible. We ordered a lemonade and after they forgot to bring it to us, we reminded them and still the lemonade never came. We were still charged for it but with the lack of service we had already endured it wasn't worth the trouble disputing it. My gf swears this place usually has great food so I'll give it another shot but this time was pretty rough. read more

These folks far exceeded expectations on all fronts. It's the type of place that feels like a set from some film noir. In its present day form you could easily mistake the overall experience for some hot spot in Brooklyn's Williamsburg or LA's Silver Lake neighborhoods. I can give it a 5 star on food but not the service! We (5 of us) arrived at 5:15 pm on a Thursday night & just a handful of customers were there. We ordered our drinks & then our food! So far so good! The shredded bressel sprouts were delicious! Here's where it really didn't go well. My husband & son's main entree came out. The 3 of us just sat & watched them eat. I watched others receive their appetizers & entrees who came in after us. About 25 minutes later- the rest of us received our entree. This to me is completely ridiculous! I also wanted another glass of wine (no one even came back to see if we wanted another drink or refill our water glasses!) My hubby went up to the bar & waited to get water & a glass of wine for me. He was told to return to the table & it would come & it did about 5 minutes later. Obviously, they need about another 4 servers - not just the 2 there! This place! It looks like a dive bar at first glance. But look a little closer - very hipster with the bearded staff and minimalist interior. But don't let that detour you either. My second time at Ruins and first time for dinner. It was all sooooo good. We went during restaurant week, so the menu was different from the normal menu. I had the animal fries as my starter, the hot chicken sandwich as my main meal, and a sundae for dessert. The others in my party had the dirty fries and the crunchwrap supreme as their starters (don't remember what they had as their mains). The starters were all so amazing. Like seriously, they should be regulars on the menu. My hot crispy sandwich, also usually on the main menu, was as delicious as I remember it. It isn't too spicy, but the aioli does have a nice kick. The staff was friendly and very attentive even though they were slammed. The only downside to the restaurant is it is small and if there's a wait there is really no place to wait. It gets crowded by the door and becomes a problem as people are trying to enter and go all the time. Other than that, such a great staple for Spokane! Dinner review on a Friday night. I love the concept behind this restaurant. The rotating menu, focus on high quality ingredients, and beautiful if not eclectic displays is great. This is my second time in for dinner and I've been in for lunch a few times which I will write up in a separate review. For this dinner experience we were greeted by amazing wait staff who calmly and smoothly managed a very busy evening. Good team work and communication. The food was prompt and drinks were delicious. The disappointment was with the food. I ordered "spicy quail" with a great description and received salty bird with saracha sauce. Even if the "spicy" portion of the dish was intended to be saracha, then say so because that favor does not work for everyone and had I know I would have skipped it! All of the dishes served that night ordered by others in our group were SALTY and underwhelming in flavor. I am giving this a three star because I love the concept behind the restaurant. I like the location. I might try it again because I want to like it... but not the first place on the list to return to... Mostly because of the food. read more

The tiniest dishes for $16 you've ever seen in your life. The food tastes like anything you could make at home and you'll leave hungry after spending more money than it's worth. The menu called them "shareable dishes" but what came out was not shareable at all. It was more of an appetizer at an entrée price. 4 tiny perogies for $16? You have got to be kidding me. The goulash also came in a tiny bowl. None of this would have been a problem if things were priced appropriately. When we asked the server why the portions were so small, she agreed that they were tiny and didn't know why they were called shareable. That would've been nice to know before we ordered. After moving here last year I was really excited to try this place and had multiple people recommend it to me. So we decided to go during restaurant week and were very disappointed at what we experienced. We went around 8:30 PM and maybe that is what contributed to it. They were not busy at all. Overall the service was lackluster. The staff weren't very friendly and when we did receive our food there weren't even clean forks to eat it with. We had to wait for forks to be washed before we could eat our food which was cold at that point. We ordered the dirty fries which were ok but cold and soggy when we got to them with clean forks. Our second option was the hot chicken sandwich. The flavors were good but it tasted like old fryer oil. It was extremely greasy as well. Last we got the peanut buster sundae which was just ok. With all of the hype about this place I expected way better. We're going to give it one more try and hope it was just a bad night. read more

Incredible food! They did not have any vegan dishes, but they made one for me, just threw a dish together, and it was one of the top three vegan dishes I have had in my 11 years of being vegan. I have been here twice and the food has always been great! The cocktails are really well balanced and fun, usually with a theme. I love the Art Deco decor and that it is intimate and feels almost like a speak easy. So why 3 stars? The slllloooowww service. The service is friendly and informative but so slow. Both times I have been we have come in and sat down, it takes 5-7 minutes to get waters. Another 10-12 to get cocktails and then maybe 7-10 after that to get food. It wouldn't be as frustrating if you could get cocktails a little quicker just to have something to sip on while you wait. But I've noticed that they only have 3 waiters. And one of those waiters usually tends bar. So the cocktails take ages to come out. They need a dedicated bar tender. Go to Ruins of you're just starting to feel peckish. Don't go if you're starved or you might eat your napkin to avoid eating your dinner companion. Also if you like your cocktail upon first sip, immediately order another one. Otherwise if you wait until your food arrives, you'll be drinking it when your food is all gone and your dining companion will just be forced to watch you drink before you can leave. read more

That tasting combined with my own fine tacos and papas bravas left me craving oh so SO much more. If you are a creature of habit, forget it. Located across the Monroe Street bridge from Downtown Spokane it is a hidden gem that is gaining a cult following amongst local foodies. I'd been hearing rumors that this place was owned by the former Mizuna chef and he was pouring his heart out in the kitchen. We stopped in on a Saturday and they were serving a brunch menu. I hesitate to describe the food or drink because I know it will be changing all the time. All I can say is, it was delicious, well executed, and I started my plans to go back the moment I stepped in. My favorite part about Ruins is that the menu constantly changes--pretty much weekly. Sometimes it's themed, sometimes it's not. This is a restaurant where food is LOVED and appreciated and is made with care and artistic flair. The staff here, as mentioned in other reviews, are phenomenal. I always feel so well taken care of. I love that Ruins is in a small, quirky spot that feels hole-in-the-wallish and yet serves up world-class food. It's the perfect eclectic mix. The cocktails are delicious and they have great bartenders. It's also the perfect place to grab lunch as it's usually not crowded and the sandwiches are generous portions. I usually bring a friend or two and we all share bites so that we get a chance to sample 50% or more of the menu. I'd spend time raving over particular dishes I've had but then you'll only be jealous because chances are, there's something different on the menu now. Suffice it to say, every week has something new and tasty. There are usually a number of vegitarian options which is rare for Spokane and much appreciated. read more
