We had to replace a kitchen faucet that had been discontinued. We wanted a nice one not junk from Home Depot. After a lot of online looking we identified a couple of brands and ended up here. The counter person was incredibly patient with us, answered questions by phone and generally was very supportive. Pricing was comparable to online stores. Was there again today and although they did not have my part, they went to great lengths to help me find it. This is a really long-time business that has just about everything in plumbing and HVAC. My obscure part request was not in stock but they could have ordered it for me, I was in a hurry as a tenant was without heat and they recommended a business that had the part. I always envy the tool displays. They have a Diablo, a Milwaukee, and a Ridgid display that you can walk up to and actually touch the tools. There are several good plumbing supply places but if you need something now or if you need advice from the counter, this is the place to go. PS Park in their lot, not on the street, not the best neighborhood. My biggest worry for Rubenstein is that people drive up to it and then drive away. Yes, this is contractor and pro store but weekend warriors, handy people, and even novice homeowners will get great service. PS As with any pro store, go there in person, do not call. read more

What a bunch of idiots. I brought a leaking sink stem to them asked for a replacement. It was supposed to be a F27 4" stem for a Pfister sink faucet. After hours trying to do the replacement myself I gave up and called my plumber. Turns out they gave me a wrong stem size (they gave me a 4 '1/4" stem not 4"). Oh, silly me, please spank me for being a fool and thinking these guys knew what they were doing. Cost me not just the $12 bucks for the wrong fixture but $100 for a real plumber to fix the job. read more

I like this spot. You pull into their ample parking lot. You go talk to someone at the front desk and they help you for your specific needs. This is more the behind the scenes building supply store - valves, pipes and that sorts. You are not coming to for browse and peruse for items, because that actual part is limited to a small corner of bathroom fixtures. This is where you come with a specific need and measurement, in this case some new pipes for our old ass toilet. I brought the old parts, they laughed at how old it was, said BRB, and came back out with a new one. They wrote up the invoice, I purchased the Yelp deal for $10 for $20, showed it to the cashier and I was out. My husband was there previously and mentioned a few items he was going to purchase at Home Depot was actually cheaper here, so there's that. I have to give these guys at Rubensteins 5 star rating because 98% of the time they have what I am looking for or need. I can at times when they are busy with other customers grab my parts and have them ready for the counter person to write me up. I get a good morning or a good afternoon depends on what time I get there. As a Contractor it is hard to get materials in a expidite manner. It feels good to be called by name. I do not know who the other people are that says you guys do not care or have to look up prices to special order but they also do not know that you mostly deal with Contactors. Last week PG&E installed new gas lines to my place and when they came around to light pilot lights the one to my Kenmore water heater wouldn't light. I couldn't get a Kenmore service person out for almost a week to check it out and I wasn't about to take cold showers for that long so I started calling around to try to find parts. Long story short, George at Rubenstein let me know that their shop in San Jose had the pilot light assembly I needed and set me up with a purchase order to go pick it up. Luckily that was the issue so the water heater is working again...and I'm back to taking hot showers. Everyone around me is thankful for that so thanks, George and the folks at Rubenstein. Yes! We never thought we'd be so excited to have a plumbing supply store nearby, but when our hot water heater decided to call it a day, we were frantic to find a repairman or supplies to do the job ourselves. After lots of Googling and watching YouTube videos, we came to the conclusion that the problem was the thermocouple and/or something else. The challenge: we have a closed combustion system and an A.O. Smith water heater, so we needed a specific part. After calling the A.O. Smith helpline, we found out that Rubenstein's was one of their parts distributors. We walked over their store (open in the mornings) and showed someone at will call/sales our burner set and said we needed a replacement thermocouple. The guy looked at our burner set and asked us to wait a moment while he checked their parts directory, walled back to their supply area, and brought out a box. He cut open the box and showed us the brand new piece that we needed (not what we thought it would be but exactly what we needed). Not sure how it compares in terms of the price, but the ease and convenience were worth it, and the part itself was much cheaper than quotes we got from repairmen. It took us about 15min to remove and reinstall the faulty piece, and now we have hot water! Thanks, Rubenstein's!! read more

Hi; I always seem to get to a point where Home Depot does not have "something" and I have to drive down San Pablo to have a "DMV Experience" at this "supply shop". I have been to this place 4 times, and it is always a horrible experience. I always get the feeling this shop is for pros, and anyone off the street is viewed as not being a rocket scientist, like those folks working there seem to think they are. I learned to use the Internet or go down to Hayward from now on. I thought it was me, but when i spoke to one of the guys in the Emeryville Home Depot, he seemed to agree most people report back a similar feedback, these guys are just not happy over at Rubensteins... This last visit I had to walk around behind this guy, to nearly beg for a flue brush, while he played 20 questions with me. The body language and feeling you get in this place is horrible. They should try a couple blind tests and get rid of those happy people. Stay away from this place! read more

I always hated the "old school assholes" from the trade stores and was relieved when home depot opened so that I could see the parts and understand the costs. But, The crew at Rubensteins has always been helpful with very little attitude. If you need lots of advice then try Ace hardware on Grand. Ruvbensteins generally have everything I need in stock or can order within a few days. John is exceptional in his ability to go out of his way to respond to me and follow through, either by phone or e-mail. He always ensures that I am getting the trade price even though I am an architect. As a professional in the business, Anna is more than helpful in putting together orders, working with clients, and giving me feedback on different items. I am always specifying unusual fittings and get no complaints from Anna. Excellent customer service! The guys behind that desk are all knowledgeable, kind and efficient. They have an incredible supply of plumbing supplies and fixtures. I did not get the name of the guy who helped me but he made a huge effort to find the exact fixtures I needed to replace a toilet seat. He didn't even ask if I purchased the seat from them (which I did!). I inquired about their vanity offerings and worked with Anna--who is the bomb. She was very patient not only by answering all kinds of questions (our first bathroom remodel!) but she also took the time to offer advice about our remodel. She was efficient, smart and friendly. Shopped for a sink and faucet here. Walked in and was told I had to make an appointment to see the person I was told to talk with by my contractor. She was not with another customer. They ordered the sink with an extra part, a basket used in lieu of a disposal, without asking me if I would be using a disposal. They claim is it part of a set and will not take the $40 kit back even though it is in the original box with packaging. I found the faucet for 30% less through Amazon. Maybe plumbers like Rubenstein Supply, but I did not experience any extra value added. Update: Rubenstein Supply reached out to me through Yelp. I was able to return the unused basket and they gave me a refund. Thank you, Yelp, for helping me get this done. read more

I needed a good quality sewage ejector pump. Not the everyday item I admit. They did not have it at the San Pablo store. So they did find it at one of the other branches and got it there with one day. It is a contractors supply. However, most of the time if you just fess up at these places that you don't know what you don't know they are pretty good. Also ... timing is everything. If you show up at 8:00 - 9:00 when the phones are ringing service will be worse than at 6:30 when they open. I've had the pump now for going on seven months of regular service and it's working great. It's a Meyers pump. With Home Depot dropping things they consider "commercial" places like Rubenstein are going to be needed. For instance, I need some test plugs now for a bathroom remodel I'm doing. Home Depot doesn't carry them anymore. I'll be at Rubenstein Saturday most likely to get some. read more

Maybe they did not have time for a non-contractor today, but after being passed over for help several times in the showroom, what I got was, at best, a dismissive attitude by the sales department. One salesman was pretty busy complaining about the Bay Are homelessness problem and how local politicians only encourage it which prevented him from moving on to other customers. Then he moved on to needle exchange programs, but I just wanted some help with a furnace question. After a bit of a battle to prove I actually knew what I was talking about, my salesman became a bit more friendly, but he never acted as if he was really interested in helping me solve my problem. So I had gone in with what I thought was a fairly simple issue regarding my home furnace and looking for some advice regarding said furnace. My experience today left me with a fairly simple answer. Rubenstein is not in the business of advising the average homeowner. If you know exactly what you want, maybe Rubenstein is the place. In my case, wanting some customer service and advice, it clearly was not. I will look for help on my home improvement needs elsewhere. read more

How Rubenstein Supply Company treats a customer. Summary: Rubenstein Supply Company sold me a stainless steel sink for $2,000. The sink rusts. They never offered to replace it or to refund my money. History: In 2008 I bought a stainless steel sink for a greenhouse for $2,015 from Rubenstein Supply Company. The sink started promptly to rust and in 2009 my plumber who installed the sink brought it to the attention of "Mike" of Rubenstein Supply. Mike invited a sink manufacturer's expert, "Patrick" to diagnose the problem. In late fall Patrick called to tell me that my sink was not rusting and then hung up on me. Apparently, Mike then chalked my complaint as closed and did not return my calls. Frustrated, in April 2010 I sent an angry letter to Mr. Rubenstein himself. This time Mike arranged for another session with Patrick (as a manfacturer's employee, hardly an unbiased expert) with a predictable result: without admitting any problem, the manufacturer offered Mike to remove rust from the sink and to replace sink legs. Mike never forwarded that offer to me, nor did Rubenstein Supply offer anything to me directly. He forwarded the offer to my plumber, who of course cannot accept or reject it, and I cannot accept or reject it since I never got it. Interestingly, the expert never noted that the sink is rusting primarily along welded joints. To me it suggests that the welding may be at fault and a rust removal would be only a temporary respite.
