Ruben's is really an overall great place. Very clean and welcoming. Ruben the owner is very hospitable along with all his staff. It's a buffet with Mexican and American food. Homemade tortillas and everything is delicious. They have from lasaña, ceviches, tamales, various dishes . They have an omelette bar and waffles. Fresh fruit and salads along with fabulous deserts from cheese cakes, carrot cakes, chocolate cakes. To top it all they serve mimosa or champagne which is pretty good not the cheap stuff. I will NEVER eat here again. I had the WORST service and FOOD here on Sunday. When we walked in the hostess asked us if we wanted the brunch buffet or a la carte. We were a party of 5 ladies who wanted to eat A la carte. Apparently if you do not order the brunch then they will just ignore you. Took 30 minutes to get our drinks...which was just plain coffee and 2 mimosas. We continued to wait and wait and wait. The food took 90 minutes to arrive and each entre came out alone. So we could not eat together. The pancakes were cold and they tried to pass off plain egg yolk as hollandaise sauce on the eggs benedict. I had to send it back it was awful. So I didn't even eat breakfast. This was my 4th time coming to Ruben's. I will NEVER return! I believe it can't handle how busy it has become. I highly recommend not eating here...ever! read more

This was perhaps the worst meal and definitely the worst dining experience I have ever had. I rarely do a review. This place is so horrible that I would feel guilty not warning diners. The meal took a long time to come. Was cold and some of it was spoiled. We tried to eat and enjoy because we were in a foursome wanting to have a good time. However, the meal was SOOO bad that we left more than half on the table. After complaining to the waiter/owner they refused to take responsibility and offer us a reasonable discount. After I pushed the issue, the owner threatened to call the police and faked like he was calling. I called his bluff, but my wife and companions told me to step aside and they would handle it. I waited outside. Turned out they paid the entire bill... not because it was just, but because they shun public situations. It is clear this place is hanging on by a thread. There were only 8 people in the whole restaurant that seats more than 100. Please be warned that this place is to be avoided. If you choose to go there, make sure your health insurance is up to date. read more

We've eaten here a few times and this particular evening when we came I saw two fish specials walking in on the board so I asked and the waiter said the two fish specials were salmon or sea bass and I asked which might be better he said the salmon was fresh. He asked how would I like it prepared and I said please ask the chef for his own choice. I am so glad I did that! The chef wasn't super busy and he took great joy in preparing what he thought is the best method and he was right! He cooked a variety of small vegetables in a light teriyaki sauce and poached to the salmon in the same sauce with beautiful garnish and a wonderful presentation. We recently discovered Ruben's and we've back twice since our initial visit! First off, go on Sunday for brunch! I think it's better than the over-hyped La Fonda and not as crowded (though still busy). They have a buffet style brunch with bottomless mimosas, or you can select meals from their menu as well. We've been for the buffet and for a typical dining experience on a Saturday and both times the food was excellent! The buffet has everything from chilaquiles and omelettes to seafood and other traditional Mexican dishes. There are obviously fresh-made tortillas (quesadillas, anyone?!) and they even have paella! There really is something for everyone. We enjoyed sitting back down at our table and laughing at all of our randomly (yet perfectly) put together dishes! Service at Ruben's is top-notch. The servers are always hustling and are quick to fill up your drink and bring you whatever you need. You'll even see Ruben himself running around, greeting guests and making sure everything is running smoothly. The view is insane so definitely sit on the patio if you can and the weather is nice. Otherwise, there's plenty of room in the dining room as well. There's even seating at the bar if that's more your style. I highly recommend you check this spot out. I really wanted this place to be great but I was disappointed. I gave her three stars because the service was amazing. Of course there were only five people in the restaurant at the time. The main issues for me was the salsa looked a couple days old, the tortillas fell apart when you picked them up and the fish tacos were soggy. I will say the spicy wings were good I know that's not saying much. I was there for lunch so I'm wondering if there was even a chef there when we walked by the kitchen it was absolutely silent. I hope they take this constructive criticism and make some changes. read more

Still killing it! After covid I was worries spots like Ruben's may not survive or that the buffet would stop. They've adjusted and now have the buffet served cafeteria style and the food quality hasn't lacked. Went last weekend and it was $22 a person w/unlimited mimosas and of course Ruben himself is out there working his ass off and pouring shots in peoples mouth assuring we all have a good time. read more

Must read. We are an older couple and we invited non-Spanish speaking friends to Sunday buffet brunch at Rubens on 5-30-21. We are professional folks in our 60's, we have eaten at numerous restaurants in Baja and NEVER experienced the following: We had reservations for 11am and arrived on time. We were seated at a table next to the cashier at the front door. Sunday brunch ($20 per person) includes unlimited mimosas, good so far. By the time we were all seated and received our drinks (I don't drink and got orange juice) it was about 11:10, no problems so far. The buffet line was long so we decided to sit and drink or beverages, about 10 minutes later we went to get our food. Once we all sat down to eat it was about 11:25. The quantity of food was not what I expected. I had some beans, pasta ( yuk), Chile relleno and a dried tasteless "Eggs Benedict " . Now by this time I noticed a guy standing near the cashier who kept looking our way. You know the look, as if the person knows you. We finished our food and the waiter took the plates. By this time my wife and friends ordered another mimosa and we sat for a couple of minutes discussing what else we were going to eat and desert we were going to get. Now get this, the guy that had been watching us came up to our table and in Spanish asked that we leave because he needed our table for another customer. I looked at my watch and saw it was 11:35. Are you kidding, we only had 10 minutes to eat....My wife immediately told the man that we had not even fished our drinks or got our desert. I explained to our guests what the man had told us. My wife was so up set and embarrassed because the man was loud and the customers at the adjoining tables could hear him. We all looked at each other and thought it was rude and embarrassing so we got up and left. I stayed behind and made the excuse that I had to use the restroom, in the meantime my wife and our guests walked outside. I found the man and told him I wanted to speak with him in private. The man, who identified himself as "Ruben Torrez" the owner, said in a very loud and sarcastic tone tell me what you want right now and refused to talk in private. I explained that what he did to us was embarrassing, he cut our meal short and he should know better being the owner. Ruben began yelling at me and literally grabbed my arm and told me to get out of his restaurant. I pulled away and told him to keep his hands off of me. I then yelled at him that he was a rude and despicable man. To my amazement a customer sitting next to our incident said I agree with you, he is a very abusive and rude man he has been treating customers like that since I've been here. Ruben very quickly walked away from me. The customer continued to say he was a rude man and she will never go back! Needless to say what the owner did was completely wrong and uncalled for, and if I was an a-hole could have had him arrested for grabbing me with numerous witness that saw what happened! I will NEVER go back. There are to many good places to eat and treated well, like "Splash", Rosarito Beach Hotel, Bobby's, or La Fonda just to name a few. read more

Ruben had a dream. A classy, big, gorgeous restaurant that offered fine dining. And he made it happen. And even though the huge back patio (intended for brunches and wedding receptions) is still incomplete, that is something we must get used to if we are to immerse ourselves in the "there's always mañana " Baja way. That's ok with me. It was quite beautiful inside, tastefully decorated, rich with stone work, tile and lots of wood, with white table cloths, flickering candles, and quite elegantly modern in attitude. And the hospitality that would not quit. We were guided here by someone who knew Ruben and had no doubt he would make us happy. It was a memorable evening. We tried to be discrete in ordering, our group of 6 friends. We failed miserably. And we really barely sampled the menu. First, a huge bar where we sat around, imbibed, and admired the new surroundings. After being seated at our table, we ordered a bottle of wine to share, then started with a tableside Caesar salad, something I haven't seen in a couple decades. Had to try it. The waiter pushed out a cart laden with tons of small dishes and bottles, even the raw egg, all the ingredients necessary for making an authentic salad. It took about 5 minutes, each ingredient added one at a time and expertly blended. The performance was fascinating. Out came a couple of baskets of garlic bread. Mind you, not just any garlic bread. Thinly sliced, delicately buttered, still soft and hot. Then out came another appetizer. Guacamole. Not your Grandmother's guacamole. This one was generous, lumpy, even had cubes of cream cheese in the mix. Served with thin pita chips, it was unusual and tasty. When I saw Shrimp Scampi listed as an appetizer, I knew this was my "dish" for the evening. And I was so right. Despite only 5 large, sweet shrimp, it was the copious amount of garlic, wine and butter sauce that pushed me over the edge. I cleaned my dish, left not a drop of sauce, greedily sopped it all up with that great bread. I shall probably go to hell for this. And I spent the rest of the evening, and most of the next day, fiendishly calculating how to get that dish again. Nobody took my blatant hints, but some day, I shall. The rest of the group each naïvely ordered a bowl of the lobster bisque. Eating light? Right. Who knew it was so huge? Who knew it was completely sealed with a buttery puff pastry lid? Who knew it would be another showpiece as the waiter cracked open the middle and drizzled sherry into the hot soup inside. It was creamy and rich and filling (I stole a spoonful). My only wish would have been to discover chunks of lobster meat inside. This one was a smooth one. No matter. I was still sopping up that amazing scampi butter and tearfully moaning words of endearment. The grand finale was yet another tableside showpiece. If you have never seen Mexican Coffee made, this is* the* place to do it. The cart came out displaying the bottles of Tequila and Kahlua. First they glaze the edge of your glass with sugar, then caramelize it by fire. Then comes the igniting of the different alcohols that have first been poured into a ladle. And a generous sprinkling of cinnamon that sparks like fireworks. Still blazing, they pour it into your glass. Then comes the hot coffee. And lastly, a generous topping of whipped cream and a cherry. What fun. And how delicious. After all this great food and several spectacular shows, each couple only paid $75. Total. Where can you do all this in the states? I've been coming to Ruben's Sunday brunch for about 10 years now. First when he was across the street from Las Gaviotas, then when he took over the Palm Grill, and now at his new location. It has never been a disappointment. There are only two brunches I will go to, this one and the La Fonda brunch. The La Fonda brunch has a much larger variety of food offerings and is right on the ocean, but Ruben's has a much better atmosphere. Here, you will have live music and Mexican folk dancing. The space is also more open and spread out. The brunch is $17 per person which includes bottomless Mimosas. The food offerings include menudo, oysters, pozole, paella, civeche, waffles, traditional Mexican dishes and grilled meats. The service is impecable. Our server, Adrian, at the first mimosa asked if he should refill the drinks as needed. I told him yes and he kept the drinks flowing. If you are looking for a good time on top of some good food, then Ruben's is worth a visit. Tip: Pay in cash if you can. They will try to charge a 3% fee on American credit card transactions. read more

Three months ago, Ruben's moved 3 km north from his place in Primo Tapia to a new building that he built on property that he bought. It is a beautiful place with the same staff. Ruben says this is his 5th and final location because now he owns it and is not subject to huge rent increases as the previous locations had.
