I was craving a great BBQ. I by coincidence saw this place and stop. I am telling you it is the best ever. I ordered the beef and the ribs but they were so nice to also ad pulled pork because I was not able to decide. That was a great surprise for me, since they didn't even mention it to me at all. I had take out so I didn't see till I was ready to dig in. Also the cone cakes or flap cakes were amazing. Potato salad just hit the spot too. All went so well together. The food quality is just not as good as the past. The barbecue chicken today at lunch was undercooked with a rubbery consistency and had a liquid smoke taste. The cornbread was dried falling apart. Last week we had to return drive thru bbq as it had a burned taste. We have never had problems over the years. Having that , the pulled pork is among the best barbecue anywhere. read more

Absolutely love this joint! I know you didn't ask, but here's the backstory anyway: my wife broke her ankle back in fall of 2023, so she couldn't walk. Well, we wanted to get out of the house since she's couped up in there all day-she works from home and had a broken ankle, so needless to say she was sick of looking at the inside of our home. So, in an effort to show her some different scenery, I decided to find some good BBQ joints that were 1) not in Nashville (that drive is sickening to say the least) and 2) a little bit away so we could have a nice, relaxing weekend drive and she could just sit and ride. Well, we live in Clarksville, so we decided to travel up Guthrie HWY and see what we see. Roy's came in CLUTCH! It was a beautiful scenic 1hr drive from the house and the food is outstanding! My wife is especially fond of their white beans and ribs, while I usually get either pulled pork or chicken (you can never go wrong with yardbird). Their serving sizes are generous and the meat falls off the bone. Their service their so far is outstanding as well-very down home and welcoming. Great place to gather as a couple or even as a whole group/family. I will say that we always get take out, but one of these days we'll have to come in for the in-house experience...and their pie! The pulled pork and sauce were good. The baked beans were okay, basically unremarkable. They were not what think of as baked beans, more like pork and beans. They lacked that gooey crusty sorghum feel and taste. I got the cornbread instead of the bun with my pulled pork. That was a good decision. It was good flat cornbread. I wish I had asked for it on the side the bottom "bun" got a little soggy. It did not lend itself to being eaten like a sandwich. The fried apples were not exceptional. The we're not visibly fried beyond what they were when they went into the can. Cracker Barrel does better. The chocolate pie was very good. The atmosphere is diner. I was in town on business and was recommended this place by a local. I felt like I was invited to a friends grandmothers house for a home cooked meal!!!! Many of the locals seemed to know one another and there were smiles to go around. Dress code..... jeans, some plaid, a ball cap maybe a set of bib overalls! All are welcome. Daily specials and fixens written on a few whiteboards around the place. After seating ourselves it was time to order!!!! I got the Jihad platter!! Well that's what it would be called if I were a local because, I would order this same meal so much they would name it after me!!! One piece fried catfish, creamed corn, fried okra, french fries, and a beef bar b que sandwich on cornbread with two hush puppies! It was de-lish!!! We stopped by on a Saturday at 3pm. It was a "seat yourself" place. The tables were packed and the back room was closed for a party that had already left. We thought it must be a great place to eat. There were plenty of staff members working and moving around. After we stood around for about 10min no one ever greeted us. We heard employees complaining, saying they were on break, and being glad to go home. A couple tables came open but there was no rush to get them cleaned up and ready for the next people to sit down. They have a your basic BBQ. Pork, Ribs, beef or chicken and about a dozen sides you can order. I got chicken strips that had a good light batter and nice and crunchy. My sides were fries , which were good and coleslaw which I didn't care for. My husband got the half BBQ Chicken which he said was good. They have daily specials also that come with 3 sides. Have been eating at Roy's for years and years and years. I am from Louisville, but my family is from Russellville. It's standard for us, when we visit my family, to take some Roy's home. The pulled pork is phenomenal. I really wish I knew exactly what they did to the pork to give it the flavor that it has. It's clearly marinated in something. What is the secret? But it gives it such a terrific flavor, that you can eat the pork all by itself, and it will be a fantastic meal. And the reason why this is so special is because pulled pork is usually a "meh" item at a BBQ restaurant. Pulled pork is almost always the same, for the most part, regardless of what BBQ restaurant you go to. Roy's really is special because it is so different. Furthermore, Roy's hot BBQ sauce is good enough to be bottled and sold. It's ridiculously good. Clearly a ketchup based sauce. The girl wouldn't tell me what is in it. She said that the owner makes it. Why they don't bottle it and sell it, I'll never know. I'm a BBQ snob. I've been to BBQ restaurants around this nation, and I am a harsh critic of this cuisine. I've been to Central in Memphis, Rendezvous in Memphis, Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City, to name a few. Roy's pulled pork is better than anywhere I've ever eaten, and Roy's hot BBQ sauce is *probably* the second best sauce I've ever had, behind Dreamland BBQ in Tuscaloosa. Now, it's also worth noting - the rest of the items on the menu are very average to not very good. I don't think that Roy's is, honestly, that good of a restaurant. The beef and the sides are very average. If you go to Roy's, get the pulled pork with the hot BBQ sauce. That's what makes Roy's so good, and that's why they get 4*. If it weren't for these two items, then I'd have to give them a 2* for everything else. Please note: It is better to get the pulled pork "cold" and to-go. Heat it up yourself at home. Also note: They have another location on Franklin Street. Very small place, only two tables. So it is mostly for to-go orders. I had heard a lot about Roy's, and here for lunch ordering a BBQ sandwich, with sides of beans and fries. One person took our order and brought out the drinks. The food came out quick delivered by another person. The beans had chunks of bbq meat and the fries were plentiful and hot. The sandwich was huge with a lot of meat but the tiniest little dab of bbq sauce on top. The sandwich had a good taste but I could have use a bit more sauce. There was none on the table and no one ever came to check on us to see if we needed anything. I would been nice to had a refill on pop too. It looked like four or five people working the tables but it was hard to tell who was who as noone wore any kind of name tag or uniform, and when not busy they sat down at a table until next order came out. read more

Had to try them out. A few people I know talked good about the. I had the St.Louis style ribs. I really didn't care for them because they was covered in sauce. I am more of a dried rib kinda gal. They had no smoked flavor about them. They tasted more like they had been boiled then baked and covered in the sauce. I'll probably not ever eat there again. The service was not that great. My drink sat empty for about 10 minutes. I wouldn't have gotten the refill if I didn't stop the waitress. They wasn't super busy,but there was enough staff there that it could have been handled. The parking lot was packed but they had a table for me right away. I got the pulled pork on corn bread with hot bbq sauce which isn't that hot but it's vinegar based. It come with 2 sides and I got black eyed peas and white beans. I didn't have time to check in on Yelp before my plate was at the table steaming hot. Everything was so good. In russellville due to work, and the boss brought us here. This is the best catfish I've ever had. Way better than the catfish in Scottsville ky. The bbq pork looks absolutely fantastic, and smells that way too. The staff is super friendly, down home, and just plain delightful. The hours are 8-8 today, which I think is great when you're running through and need a bite to eat. The speed of service was also a big big plus. The tea could be sweeter but that's really my only complaint...but I really wouldn't call it a complaint. 5/5!!! read more

Good stuff. I hit a couple BBQ joints while in Kentucky and this was by far the best I had. The pulled pork is flavorful and the helping was generous. I did detect a slight hint of lemon in the pork. Don't know if I really liked the lemon in it but it was different in a good way. The brisket was chipped and seemed like it was simmered in sauce. They didn't have a traditional brisket sandwich on the menu which I thought was disappointing. Beef still had good flavor but it came off tasting like BBQ pot roast instead of brisket. Generous helpings of delicious onion rings. Sauce was great too. I dont like to sauce my pork but it would go great with it. The cornbread pancakes are not to cornbready. So I was working on up on the cell tower up the hill. Spotted this place from 200 ft in the air and was excited to finish the work to get some lunch and experience some KY BBQ. Here's all I have to say about that - Service is poor, the server was very unprofessional and noticed she dropped a napkin roll with silverware on the floor and proceeded to carry it over to a table adjacent to ours. One thing that stood out was the fact their menu contained way too many non/BBQ items to be considered a smokehouse. The brisket I received was horrendous, drenched in some awful BBQ flavored sauce, really chewy, and smelled like a manwich sandwich. Come to think of it, I don't really think they were using the smoker out back for anything besides an attention getter. Sweet tea was not fresh, not even close! I know this isnt what BBQ is about. Let me say this about myself. I know good BBQ. I've literally traveled all over the South and have dined at some of the most famous restaurants from Florida to Texas and Missouri to the Carolinas. I think it's safe to say that Roy's BBQ is generally accepted as the golden standard of BBQ in the Russellville/Franklin/Bowling Green area. And they totally deserve this outstanding reputation... The food is amazing whether you're dining in or ordering carry-out. The BBQ is some of the freshest, smokiest tasting I've ever had. It's indescribably good. And another important indicator of the legitimacy of a BBQ joint: baked beans. Oh. My. Goodness. They pass the test with flying colors. In fact my aunt and uncle who live in Russellville frequently bring Roy's baked beans to family gatherings. Roy's baked beans are simply impossible to beat. Service at Roy's is warm and genuine. I love a good family-run restaurant and Roy's certainly fits this description. The decor is awesome. Lots of sporting memorabilia and mounted fish hanging from the walls. Nothing too fancy, but it perfectly fits the small-town, friendly atmosphere of the restaurant. I know some people love Whitt's BBQ, but I really feel that Roy's beats Whitt's. Stopped in during a long trip and had the Ribeye sandwich with hominy and had brown casserole. Hominy was weirdly sugary sweet and the hash brown casserole was somewhat bland.
