Best Indian food I've had this side of the Atlantic! The samosa chaat (app) tasted like it had been made fresh from a street cart in Delhi; the curries were delicious and spice level was perfect (they ask mild, medium, or hot, and the medium was a true medium) and the naan came out fresh and hot. They gave us mini desserts on the house, a mango lassi style pudding and rice pudding, and they were so good I shed actual tears because the flavors took me right back to India. The only personal issue we had was one of the "as spicy hot as you can make it" request had the same spicy heat level as the medium level that one person in our group ordered and the second order of "as spicy hot as you can make it" wasn't spicy at all. After a late soccer match, our family of ten and all ages (3yo-80yo)went to the Royal India Grill, Market st, Potsdam. They so nicely accommodated our late arrival with a lovely table setting and terrific service. The praise from our family who came from all over the world was impressive. They said that it was some of the very best Indian food that they had ever enjoyed. Server "Joy" was beyond friendly and the kids loved "Jennifer" the robot. Unfortunately I didn't find anything that really sent my tastebuds flying. Much of the cuisine was vegetarian or chicken based, the soup was vegetable and good but not stellar. Probably the most annoying thing was the credit card reader was portable and popped up pre-programmed tips as the waiter stood right over me. The restaurant is between Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam, and offers customers a variety of different dishes during lunch. Having read the reviews on Google, I decided to drive out there myself. The restaurant is very nice and clean, and there's always an attentive waiter refilling waters and seeing if you need anything. Now, I can't say how things are during dinner time or if you are ordering takeout. But if you are stopping by for the lunch buffet, it's worth the money. During my time here, I had the Chicken Marsala, Chili Paneer, Goat Saag, Plain Biryani, Onion Chutney, and Regular Naan. I also ordered Garlic Naan, Chicken Naan and Mango Lassi. The food was wonderful and you could taste all the seasoning and spices that went into each dish. The only thing that I will mention to new customers is to bring a few coins for the parking meters. The special chili masala chicken was pretty good, and the paneer naan strikes the perfect balance (so often, paneer naan veers either too far to thick decadence or relative dryness). It's located in a charming old building that's been renovated into an inviting intimate atmosphere, with table cloths, and Indian decor. The staff is friendly and helpful. I had a generous serving of chicken biryani, and my partner had a generous serving of the chicken Tiki special. We shared the generous serving of garlic naan. Everything was delicious! The biryani was especially delicious. It may be the best I've had. We both had plenty of leftovers to take back to our hotel for another meal. Overall a delightful, friendly, and yummy experience. I'm on my second visit through the buffet, when the man in front of me turns and says, "Can you imagine? City Food up here in the North Country." What a complement. He was right, this was just about the best Indian Food around and it would be worth driving for miles to eat here. On Monday night it is an all you can eat buffet. Normally I am much more into quality food, over quantity. But the food was so delicious here, that I had a significant quantity of it as well. Some of the many things we loved -- Goat curry, tandori chicken, paneer, chicken tikki masala, the rice pudding for dessert. Everything on the buffet was fresh, plentiful and over the top great. Service was exceptional as well, as our server checked on us consistently filling water glasses and making sure we didn't need anything else. The Indian Beer selection was also impressive as I got to try a couple that I had not seen before. The place appeared to have recently opened as the wall art was of Italian scenes, from the previous establishment. Please put Royal India Grill on your list of must visit restaurants. The absolute best Indian food I have ever had, perfect flavor and heat. Curry is amazing with plenty served. The best soup I have ever had was also at this place, the Royal soup. Somehow it was melt in your mouth good as a soup, the meat was flavorful. The drinks were authentic from India but with regular drinks as well. The atmosphere was great with what felt like a forever appetizer always in front of you. My favorite restaurant in the area by far, probably the best restaurant I have ever gone to. Altogether, this restaurant has a everything you would want in a meal, great service, incredible food, stupendous appetizers and drinks, and a sophisticated atmosphere to boot. Indian food is a go to for Celiac sufferers so I was gobsmacked to say the least as it is the first time I have ever encountered this at an Indian restaurant.
